It gets hard to track suggestions in a thread that's old.

Starting off a new thread here to get feedback from all members as to what TDF should have. Remember, your suggestion should be for a greater good, examples:

  1. We need to make it easier for members to find the content we post by categorising better
  2. We need to encourage more participation and more sign-ups to keep the forum healthy
  3. We need more Google traffic coming to the forum, so we should discourage copy pasting from other sites, for example
  4. We need to offer a smoother experience and reduce spam
  5. Quality of posts needs to be upped to make for a better reading experience for visitors
  6. New theme for mobile devices and also a dark theme, etc

Suggest changes that you feel will improve the forum as a whole.

1) I guess the current moderated posts limit is 10. It'd be better if it was 5. Would encourage new members. Many don't return after their post(s) go to moderation queue.

2) Dark theme, example - take a cue form dark theme of tapatalk. It's so brilliant.

3) Quote notifications

4) User tagging - I do understand that some members want this at the cost of the option of being able to disable it, and I appreciate it too. If you can bring it with the required option, then it'd be a great addition. :)

1) Agreed, ideally 0, if the mods are willing to keep things clean if not too much spam is getting through. Using the new plugin I think registrations are cleaner now. The same plugin might work well with posts also. What say mods?
2) Will work on this. Any volunteers to work on a theme / modify one for our needs? Happy to give you credit for it.
3) Ok, will check plugins
4) Hmm, facebook-style? Ok, will look for options.

Can we have more and advanced smileys in Tapatalk like we have in the desktop version of TDF? or is it a tapatalk restriction?

- - - Updated - - -

3) Quote notifications
+1 to this. Just like we receive notifications for PMs and likes in TDF. XDA Forum also has a quote notification option.

Not 0, but at least first post must be moderated. Dumb spammers can be stopped right away there itself ?

And no to chat box, will hugely affect attention of users resulting in less activity. All the silly/small queries will land up there.

I guess you're referring to the ads. Just use TDF v6.5 or Neo TDF members, and you won't face any of them.

PS: Change it from here, and you won't need to change ever.

Some suggestions:

1. Make including at least one tag necessary when posting new thread.
2. Do not allow titles that include "help me", "trouble", "need sig bro!" and other immature parts.
3. Increase minimum post length to 10-15 chars. When I post LOL, I just have to add "..." to make it valid reply.
skeletor
skeletor #28
Mar 6, 2014 at 5:02 PM
^ People should be allowed to lol when they want to. That's why we have 5 chars which is enough for a : lol : smiley.

Titles - we can't fix them. We have written guidelines in the Forum Rules. When we see such titles, we edit them. Or we edit after somebody reports. :)

Regarding smileys:-

1) What is the use of these(Animals section)?
:deer::orca::bunny::kiwibird::flamingo::sheep::crab::mouse::shark::emu::bumblebee::cow::moose::bulldog::hippo::Gator::ladybug::butterfly:
.......................
:owl::butterfly::ladybug::Gator::fox::snail:

2) I want to use two smiley the most, but cannot use as the picture doesnot justify it, :troll: & need to be changed.

3) :-O :)-o), seems like someone laughing, rather than someone surprised rest all are good.

yeah, because we have Akismet enabled now.

Akismet checks for first 5 posts.

If it thinks a post is spammy, it will put it into moderation. What this means is, a non-spammy 4th post will automatically get through whereas a spammy 5th post will not.

dark theme suggestions
-more colours. prolly neon and fluoroscent, it's all grey, and the little colour is all dark colours (dark red, dark green, orange)
-cant see diff between bold and normal text, change shade a bit, make bold text whiter?
-ditch the gradients on the buttons, use single colour buttons or one with less glossy gradients
-the dark theme is not dark enough, make more bits blacker?

isn't there an option on mobile to look at mobile version and full version? prefer the legacy look even on mobiles.

Can we have a subforum for music? Chit-chat is too general for writing on specific albums or artists (although it isn't against the rules) and megathreads usually aren't conducive to detailed discussion.

for example you can create a subforum called 'Arts' where music and drawings or photoshop works can be posted.

Is it set that only Administrators can start a topic around here? I do not see a new thread button anywhere.

Can we have a website discussion section please. Where all issues about this website itself could be discussed.

-------------

Reason why I had to post this was:

I got the latest Top 10 (Vol 14 Issue 03) of Digit magazine today. There are a lot of shortened links in the text such as www.dgit.in/suvrev, but in my PC all of them throw out 404 error.
I also tried using some webproxies and they too seem to be encountering the same error.

Is it only me or is www.dgit.in down?

OK removed that stupid thread tag thing. Just mentions and quotes for now, unless people really must have the ability to tag other users in threads. I can only see misuse there.

Dark theme needs some more work yes. More critical things for now, but eventually it will happen. For now it's just for those who cribbed about it hurting their eyes at night...

Back in vB 3.8.x days I was using if-else in one template to hide menus for guests. I also did it for this "Neo TDF Guests" as well. It got overridden during some update.

But forum members themselves are not really aware of the way to change theme. Don't think it is an issue.

I've fixed it anyway. :) Guests won't get the option to change theme now.

Code:

Yeah, what the hell is this "mentioned in". Its confusing, get rid of it. Its OK that now we can mention someone in the post and they will be notified but no need for showing mentions with every post.

No one sees it except mod. Only after he approves it from moderation queue, your post will go public. And if no mod is online at that moment, you got no option other than to wait, wait and wait.

To control spam, we have to do this.

And just not to trouble members waiting loong for their posts to appear, no of posts for moderation is kept at min.

For usual reasons, it's not possible to moderate posts 24/7. I hope you understand. :)

I dunno. I had it set as 3 or something.

I was managing it via promotions. New user goes into Registered users. After 3 posts, he becomes an Authorised Member - moderation gets disabled for him. Then after 7 more posts, he becomes an Active Member and can set avatar/signature etc.

So may be if moderated posts value was high, it wasn't getting into effect?

If you or for that matter anyone is not liking a certain feature, then that doesn't translates into a "problem". :|

Well for me its always around 4-5 notifications and as I am used to the old days. I always think of notifications as PMs and other important things. Thats why it feels like spamming to me, maybe its useful to others. Also I never forced anyone to do this, I am just asking if there is a chance for modifications, maybe using settings in CP. That would also work for me.

if the suggestions are already suggested before Please ignore

1. In dark theme, when someone attach a file I see no visible frame. That frame in NEO differentiate it with post content.

2. In dark theme, the text in buttons like Post reply etc are unreadable sometime, they are just too glossy. Also button onfocus color should be changed.

3. In dark theme, groups section. The texts in new groups and categories panel on the right side of the page is not readable

4. In dark theme, below Quick reply box there is a panel for Previous thread and Next thread. The text color is too light and color change on focus should be changed

Found a bug. Here's how to recreate it.
1. In the reply box enter a url inside square brackets like this [*www.google.co.in/]. Clicking on the url will give a 404 since the ']' is parsed as the url.
2. Post the reply and then edit and remove the brackets. Click save.
Now even though the link appears without the brackets clicking on the link will still take you to the link with the closing bracket. Trying to edit the url using the url tag will produce atrocities afterwards.

People keep bumping 2-3 old dead threads. Can those threads be locked automatically which didn't had any reply for more than 2 years?

This is not a solution. I don't think bumping is a problem, as long as the bump is genuine. That means no spam and no post to increase post counts.
Threads should be closed only if
1. it have served the purpose (like answer to original query is answered)
2. requested by OP itself
3. thread was posted in wrong section
4. thread became controversial and/or a spammer's nest
5. threads which becomes outdated on the discretion of mods

You can't just lock every thread based on certain time criteria. What if OP still get relevant info if someone answers even after 2 yrs. :p
What if the OP's query was never answered, but someone wants to answer even after 2 yrs, so that when someone else reaches to the thread, he gets the answer given by the person who bumped it?

Now that we have few company reps around the forum, its best if there's a proper set of regulations that all company reps needs to follow. Editors and moderators can form a draft set of rules based on their experience, but its required to keep them in line and to ensure that no wrongful information is passed on and then they can get away by ditching their profile and making another one- or deny having one.

I am not sure if everyone is facing such a problem, but the "parse URL" and the "get page title from external links" options don't work for me. When I post, URLs appear as normal text and I have to click edit then save for it to turn into a hyperlink. Still, the page titles are not obtained. I have to manually obtain the heading of the page and paste it in the post and then attach a URL to it.

Please check and/or fix.

Why are we redirected to a custom login page when we click login on vBulletin. It was much better like earlier when we had the username and password box right on the top of the page if we weren't logged in.

Now after logging in we are redirected to the points page after which one has to select forum again to start browsing.

The brand name is Digit, and as I've said before I diluted it by making the URL into a logo, now we're headed back in the right direction. Whether online, magazine or apps, Digit is the community we all belong to and enjoy.

Whatever you say is correct...
But, still I think most of the members preferred the old name...
You could have asked us about our opinion through a poll before the big change, you know... Kinda like giving the old TDF a fighting chance!!! :)
At least that poll would have been more useful than the usually ridiculous polls that were the norm at the thinkdigit homepage!!! :p

Not everything is up for a vote :)

It was important to reduce the confusion and difference between Thinkdigit and digit. If its one brand, why have two logos and identities.

Digit is the brand we all love, and what makes us special? We're Indian, for Indians and by Indians. Thus the .in was also important to us.

Thinkdigit was just a URL, not anything special. Nothing has really changed - except that you have to get used to typing a few less letters... And that too shall pass in a short time.

@Admins of this forum
Ok, I've had enough of this glam and glitz...lets come to Usability.

<there were some harsh comments here>

1. Forum log-in : From digit.in I need to
1.1. click on “Forum” link which opens a new page.
1.2. Here I need to click on 'login' link
1.3. Login page opens, enter my credentials and press enter
1.4. Rather being taken to Forum page I'm taken to a page which tells me the search query isn't found!!! What search query.
a) At this moment the URL is showing my emailid and userid in cleartext. No need of encryption, eh?
1.5. Here I've to click on “Forum” again and now it takes me to forum in a new window (?)
1.6. Why do I have to go through all these troubles to access forum? Do you personally find this flow very useful and easy for the end users?

2. Logout link :
2.1. Do a “today's posts” from forum home page
2.2. No more logout link from on the search result page. To logout either I've to go to forum home page or the page opened in 1.4
2.3. WHY?

At this moment these two things are bothering me very much. I'll post more if I find more.

+1 to this... Is anyone listening??? [MENTION=1]Raaabo[/MENTION]???

The funny thing is that all of this is happening on a forum that belongs to a technology magazine; a magazine that prides itself on being one of the top technology magazines of the country...
If you guys cannot keep your forum running in a proper way, it puts you guys in bad rapport in our eyes and, if I am to go to an extreme, it even puts question marks on the credibility of your articles and reviews...
Surely someone who has the authority to rate a particular software or hardware after testing them thoroughly would be able to get a mere forum running in proper order... If it was one or two days, then it would have been okay but this issues are dragging on and on!!!
Something needs to be done and fast and you guys must be knowing it very well considering the dwindling popularity of your magazine!!!

@Mods
Take all of my two cents in a constructive criticism sort of way... If my points are not valid, point them out so that I can know where I am wrong!!!

This is quite classic when it comes to forum-mainsite integration. My far off guess would be that Digit is probably using a third party plugin/service to link the login credentials of forum users to the ones in their main site database and that specific plugin might support a login/logout procedure from the main site only.

p.s. there's a lot more to authentication rather than just setting a cookie to true and $_SESSION variables

Works fine on Firefox for me...

As for the login, we're working on it.

I'll admit everything was a tad rushed to meet the 13th anniversary (1st June) deadline, so there are a few bugs between forum and site SSO to be fixed, but they will all get addressed eventually.

Yes we're bridging vbulletin (which I manage) with a custom-built CMS (that another team built and manages), with a third party mod (open source and not well supported)... problems will arise and take a little time to solve.

As for the rants, we're writers who explain things, not PHP coders who build sites and CMSes. If everyone could code, write, and yes, even rant, the world would be a boring place indeed...

's', 'S' and 's with caps lock on' are three completely different things. They are all distinguished keystrokes for the computers. Having caps on doesn't make 's' appear as 'S' to the computer. They all have different VK_KEY codes. So even when you have caps on and you press Ctrl + S it's actually Ctrl + s. There is only one way of sending Ctrl + S and thats to hold Shift key alongside.

Digit should organize official online gaming competitions, be it Dota 2 /CS or whatever..(even though I dont play both)
I know hsr is trying hard to organize one but im saying, the magazine itself should help advertise this for other people not exclusively for forum members..
Digit is the most recognized tech mag in India and I think actually advertising a competition on the mag will attract more members for the forum as well as for the competition

Yup, will definitely do it but first I'll create modifications for all pages (only home page modified so far).

seriously that top bar is so irritating and disturbing for the user .. i visited 3-4 times and closed the website instantly because of that disgusting bar ,.. please get rid of that , ..
thankfully read this thread and found the solution.. its seriously pathetic even though it is restricted to 1 theme but that's the theme that most people use anyway..

Most people should know how to change forum skins and all the options of User CP. Not my problem if you don't like to mess around and browse the options available to you. :)

I think this has been the case since 2010 or 11? Advertisements to non-members/guests. "No advertisement" forum skin to members.

Earlier the "no advertisement" skin was forced onto the users. As soon as somebody used to login, he used to see zero advertisements as the forum style was "forced" and the user could never change. Then members demanded different "forum skins" which automatically meant "forcing of forum style" to be disabled as people wanted options. I guess you can figure out where the locha is. You can't have everything.

yeah true i agree that i should have tinkered with options more and its a good thing that members have options.. but i was talking from a new user/guest perspective.. ads are fine as they are on every website so people are used to it and most of use adblock anyway

that type of header might be even good for the main website but for a forum it is completely off place.. at least that's what i feel, just a feedback from my side

Still people keeps on posting in this generic thread.

I myself am fed up of this error. Have to use browser on phone or tab instead of the app. And it sucks. Looks like no body from digit team cares enough. I think we just shouldn't bother being active on the forum. TDF have turned into FB, where people rant for a few days, but since they can't do anything, learn to deal with it.

^^ Firefox 33.1 on Windows 7 64 bit. I cleared the cache y'day just before starting my session of posts. I login through the forum(Laspass logs me in as soon as any forum page opens). Shall try another browser and report back soon :)

You will be inundated with requests to show a pic, give your FB account details. Etc. If you are a woman, you will be used to this already -- even though it's wrong, and you shouldn't have to go through it.

I don't think vbulletin makes any reality warping plug-ins yet. So sorry, you're on your own there. Report extra harassment to mods and we will ban offenders. That's about all that we can do...

Try asking on Mint forums or Google groups, as it doesn't appears to be a problem on our side. I too, re-installed Windows, and for the purpose of testing performance issues I disabled all extra plugins and signed out of my account on Chrome. The result was a snappy Chrome. So try running TDF on a vanilla installation of Chrome. Do NOT sign into your account. Sometimes, conflicting plugins, extensions and add-ons cause unnecessary issues.

Else this seems like an app conflict or something similar.

Is this thread still relevent in 2015?

I want to suggest adding support for embedding webm videos.

Since imgur started support for converting gifs to video, I think it would be better if there were support to share the same on the forum without having to add it as a link.

Need to add features like AMD Expert or CPU Expert Badges like in Toms Hardware Forum here also In TDF. It would be good and encouraging for existing as well as new members to participate and help other members as they arrive or might need help. Just my little suggestion...

This feature is available in other forums so I'm asking this feature. I'm thinking of changing my username in TDF for a long time

You can request any mod to change your username. This is not rare for users at digit to change there username.
Report this post or PM me and request for a name change. Someone will take care of it.

Mods, I suggest all threads need to be approved before posting (for a few weeks) even for chit-chat section. Spamming has increased a lot.

Also IP ban *www.digit.in/forum/members/319908.html *www.digit.in/forum/members/319907.html

for spamming too much.

I guess, mods already monitor first 5 or 10 posts of a new user. Atleast it was happened to me, when i joined. Don't know whether the process is still there or not!

It seems to have been removed. Otherwise it would not be possible to have the very first post be a blatant spam.

First 5 posts are still moderated. To be very honest, spams have decreased over the time.

Don't know how the hell the posts got approved.

How the reputation system works in our forum I simply don't know but here are some examples about how reputation system works in other forums. Please analyze them and if need be follow the same system here. Just my suggestion.
