One Plus One 64gb or Nexus 5 or LG G2 or G3
even Moto X is worth considering
avoid lenovo, xiaomi etc for that range

G2 or G3 is better as they have much better camera than OPO/Moto X

don't buy moto x and samsung products... Samsung Note series is only thing worth buying (talking about latest device always :))...
there is no new device in this category.. i you can wait its good for you...

Some other good device in 30K:
ZTE Nubia X6
Asus ZenFone Zoom (ZX550)
Xiaomi Mi Note Pro
Sony Xperia Z3
Samsung Galaxy Note 3 N9005 (3G+LTE)

^^nothing wrong with Moto X
as for comparing it with ZTE(poor ASS and build),Xiaomi(Poor ASS and build, small internal storage and no sd card slot),Xperia(overheating, self cracking screen issue, unreliable updates in future, xperia division may even shut down) and Galaxy(oversaturated display and camera, unnatural colours, exynos and touchwiz are a major bloat, poor and very very pricey ASS)

sorry but 30k is no small sum of money and spending soo much money on unreliable products when trusted products are available with exact same config isnt worth it

LG,Asus,Moto,One Plus One,Microsoft/Nokia,Apple are some of the few brands which are worth it in this range

I am looking to buy a new phone at around 30K after my Galaxy S4 display shattered on being dropped.

After looking at the prices on Flipkart, my options seem to be Galaxy S5 (29K) and Moto X 32 GB (32K). Moto X looks good but there are a lot of reviews complaining about the screen being fragile and the repair cost of Rs 20000 if it breaks which it seems is quite easy.

Also is there any place in Chennai where I can buy the S5 4G Snapdragon variant?

Yes, capable phone but the user has the budget to buy phone like g3.

My advice:
Get One plus One 64GB (22K)

Moto X is good as well but it has 2GB instead of 3GB

You can buy Samsung S5 snapdragon version at its official store i.e Samsung stores

Just check out LG G3, Moto X (2nd gen) & Xperia Z2 also....... Afterwards decide among the 4 which one will suit you

samsung has oversaturated display and camera, poor build quality, poor ASS,Touchwiz
Xperia has overheating and self cracking screen issues and Xperia Division may shut down soon
dont get samdung or xperia

G3,Moto X,Nexus 5,One Plus One are safe buys

Instead of g2 or N5 one plus one is still a better option.

not really hardware wise all three are very similar, the obvious winner is One Plus One ofcourse but camera is better in G3 and Nexus 5
Nexus 5 form factor is also prefered by many who dont want phablets

all 3 are awesome and its totally on preference which one to buy,you couldnt go wrong with either
vfm factor of One Plus One is the best though

For a 30k phone, i guess a brand with proper after sales is a must

The Lollipop update of Touchwiz has been trimmed down. For a demo, just check a Grand Prime(not a good buy though) in which many of touchwiz features have been removed to make it lighter. Lollipop update is already available for S4 & S5 which increases its performance & avoids lags which pops up in long use of phones earlier

Sony has scrapped the rumours regarding shut down/selling of Xperia division

Xperia Z had overheating issue, but it was solved in updates (My uncle has one)
Self cracking is a rare issue, but the issue is real though

You can easily adjust the saturation level(was available in my old S2 too) & A.S.S is good

N5 is not worth buying if you have a budget of 30k

G3 & Moto X(2nd gen) are great phones, no doubt

Mar 18, 2015 at 3:06 PM
^^ Not quite true atleast in my views
Samsung ASS is awful, rather buy OPO or something with "inferior" ASS
N5 is a fine phone for people who want a smaller form factor
S2 and S3 were good phones,ANY samsung product after that was really poorly made with poor colour reproduction and oversaturation, changing values doesnt help at all
I agree touchwiz may have been trimmed down etc but its still bad because Lollipop kernel etc itself is causing poor performance so even stock phones on 5.1 such as N5 are having issues
one good thing about Touchwiz Lollipop is the ability to remove the forced encryption,so maybe thats a major plus over stock but not good enough yet im afraid
Samsung used to be good earlier during S2 etc but its really bad now

going by your sig,i understand that you may be expecting the same level of quality which they used to offer earlier
I also thought that way and got alot of samsung products for my house around 1.5 years ago and I saw issues develop with all of them and the ASS,warranty was of no use at all
I ended up selling all of them for cheap rates in the end because i didnt see the point of paying for repairs etc for such new products

as for good ASS etc for 30k,thats why I didnt mention Xiaomi in my recommendations , Mi4 has poor build, rom,no source released, poor ASS and overpriced compared to other phones
OPO delivers more for the price and is a great allrounder

- - - Updated - - -

That's the actual point. OFFTOPIC: Me too got Moto G2 for that reason

actually I mean LG G2 :p
but the logic applied is same i guess...
price and form factor wise you cant go wrong with these phones, they arent outdated yet at all

From my personal experience, Nokia & Samsung provide best A.S.S

Maybe it differs from place to place too,as in case of Lenovo which had good service centre in Durgapur but bad in few areas

I live in the heart Mumbai, where ASS is supposed to be the best for every brand
Samsung,Sony,Maple(Apple) and Nokia service centres are exactly 5 buildings away from my house
ive had multiple poor experiences with Maple and Samsung across various products and service centres

sorry if im going a bit off topic and I hope you havent taken offense to my opinion/personal experience :)
i just dont like supporting companies which dont take efforts to give best service to their customers

Now sammy has the best display for the two generations noow. And the basic mode is regarded as the most accurate color reproduction for the note and upcoming s6.
But the point is one plus has the facility of a 5.5 inch display with 3 gb of ram at a price lower than N5 and G2 kkn13

thats true but it depends if he wants a large screen size
now if i think of it , G2 is totally out of the question as OPO and G2 have similar size
Nexus 5 is no slouch though,it is just suitable for a different set of people
personaly Id get the OPO because I dont mind larger screens and all my current phones as well within 4.5inch and 4.3inch so i always have a fallback option

If you hate the things Samsung is good at, then I have nothing to say

I just hate Samsung's design in most phones (Alpha, S6 & S6 edge are exceptions)
Touchwiz is a bit laggy(lags like hell in entry & mid range phones)

As far as camera & displays are concerned, they are great.
S4 has better screen & camera than Xperia Z1 (one of my friend has both).

There are many Samsung haters in forums these days but that was bound to happen due to arrogance of Samsung

And the truth can't be overlooked
Best display and camera hands down S series and Note series
And those who are saying that the display is oversaturated are just blind or pure Samsung haters who won't change their opinion
As for touch wiz, on lollipop it has improved a lot,in fact lollipop touchwiz on Note 3 is faster than STOCK lollipop on N5
Where are the stock android fanboys now ?

well all i can comment on this is that its purely preference and arguable
ive owned multiple samsung products and have drawn my conclusions
I find Sony displays(bravia) better for TVs,
Carl Zeiss(pureview) and Exmor(sony) for cameras
Samsung is alot like Tata cars, recycling old stuff so it looks new and people keep falling for it

The hate against samsung is justified,if a company cant respect its customers, why vice versa
they have made awesome products right upto S3 and Note 2,after which ALL their products are very poor in comparison
its soo grave,Id rather take my chances with "high quality" chinese brands than samsung

rest of your points about it being better than Apple , "Blind haters","best display and camera" etc is not at all true and there arent any blind haters here
people hate samsung with good reason here

If you like samsung so much and hate Apple,go ahead , buy samsung products only
I own/owned products from all companies including samsung and I feel they are a waste of money and are massively overrated
Im willing to even give newcomers a chance over samsung, thats how poor my "everything" samsung experience was

Isn't it obvious all these people will tell you to go for oneplus one. I have bought 2 opo as well as a galaxy s5 4g. Alpha beats opo in performance easily. It has 2x faster gpu at its native resolution and is a lot faster overall than any sd 801 phone.
All samsung haters if you hate xiaomi's ass you can't like opo's ass cos they are both handled by hcl. And xiaomi is a lot better still. 60 days is the minimum replacement time for opo and that is after mailing head executives. Please i welcome you to checkout the forum, its one of the stickies. And opo has a rubbish camera and update policy as well. My s5 got updated in jan and currently rocking cm12.1. I would personally advise you to go for alpha if you are worried about ass, buy opo if you can get over its size and everything. Hope i helped :)

People here are anti-Samsung, but I blame Samsung for that...... Its mainly due to their design & pricing

As far as Alpha is concerned, for me its only con is battery life, which is just average(about same as Moto G). Alpha has a good design & UI isn't laggy. With Lollipop update, the touchwiz will get faster. Its performance is about same as S800/S801, which for a 25k phone is good. Screen & camera are great, even better than Z3 Compact.
If Alpha had better battery life, I might have considered to get it in future over Z3 Compact

s5 too is a good option now, since it costs around 25k. Close to alpha & opo.
Plus its IP certified, good battery life and its not a phablet.

I agree it has a mediocre battery life but opo isn't stellar either. Both will last a day easily. But alpha is faster because it has a 720p display. It even scores higher than z3 compact in gpu benches despite resolution parity. I think because it throttles less as it has a 20nm soc. I would recommend s5 4g if you need a waterproof phone with better communuty support else alpha looks better and is faster than anything before note4 and still faster in gpu than any other phone and its audio quality too is much better than snapdragons.

And absolutely don't buy s5 exynos aka g900h. Stay away from it. Exynos in it sucks so bad that its gpu performance is only 40% of s5 4g and cpu is only 5% faster. Has poorer battery life and no community support.

It seems that the "self-proclaimed" tech experts here recommend One Plus One blindly. The truth is OPO is a good phone only if you consider the performance of the device and the price you are getting it for. In every other aspect OPO is either mediocre or poor

Display : Probably the worst 1080p IPS LCD there is so it is quite pathetic

Camera : Mediocre(check various reviews)

Battery Life : Mediocre, considering the huge battery. On GSMARENA many phones have better endurance rating's despite having smaller batteries.

As someone on this thread rightly said, Display and Camera is Samsung's forte. I have seen some people repeatedly arguing the Sony's EXMOR sensors are much better but probably these ignorant people are not aware of the fact that Samsung itself uses Sony's sensors(Note 4, Galaxy S6,Galaxy S4).

As far as display quality is concerned, a good display should get as bright or as dim as possible along with deep black levels. Only Samsung's SAMOLED panels(Latest gen starting from S5) offer such flexibility and all that "Oversaturated" bullshit is nonsense.

Below is an extract from Anandtech's review of the Galaxy S6

"Overall, this is probably the best display anyone will be able to get in a smartphone right now. This level of progress is amazing from Samsung, given just how bad things were with the Galaxy S' AMOLED display, even as recent as the display of the Galaxy S4. With the Galaxy S5 review, I said that I wouldn't be surprised to see AMOLED equal, if not exceed LCD within a year or two, and Samsung has managed to finally hit that mark."

I wish there was a place on this forum where I could give a public disclosure about not to be misguided by these "self-proclaimed" tech experts but sadly there is isn't one.

^^So we are facing facts here/
Now disclaimer before you bash: I am a samsung user since my first mobile and still holds s3 as one of my daily driver.
When one plus one was launched it was priced at half of what s5 and m8 was. Provided similar specs with upper hand on ram. You should see the real life experience of a user instead of gsmarena endurance test. Mobile cameras are more or less always mediocre and the only problem is display.

GSMARENA endurance tests are quite accurate.I have done the tests personally on the phones I have owned in the past( Galaxy S5, LG OG, HTC One X) and they numbers are quite close to what they have mentioned on the site. As I mentioned before, the only USP that the OPO has is flagship specs at a cheap price. Apart from that, there is zero incentive to buy the phone.

One plus one is a good phone for those who run behind specs, which is what many people do here

No one here would recommend S4 @ 18k, which for a normal person is a great multimedia phone........ Adequate performance, Lollipop solves touchwiz's lags(which was rare in even 4.4), best in class display & camera, compact for a 5" phone

I disagree with you, it comes with OneMinus One labeling, it doesn't have Samsung written anywhere on the phone, so how on earth could you say that there is zero incentive to buy the phone, check your facts bro.

After Sales Service, Display, Camera, Battery life, Call quality, those are irrelevant for a mobile phone! How come you don't know that?

PS: Quite naturally OP hasn't visited this forum in past two weeks, so I guess this topic has run its course, a long time ago, just like hundred other topics before this.

Thats true there are fanboys everywhere in this forum from amd to recently opo. Most of them are bitter with samsung on price only. Its almost as if they are paid to promote on this site. S5 had the best camera, screen, performance, battery life at launch and opo can't beat or match it in a single thing except for a gig of extra ram or same soc. Doest it change the fact it is incredibly vfm phone, nope but it is not the flagship killer its proclaimed to be. The height of this nonsense was when i heard opo had a better ass than xiaomi. Atleast xiaomi owns some of its service centres, all others are handled by htc for both the companies. Also its now easy to find spare parts for xiaomi in market ie in karol bagh my friend got a mi3's original screen replaced for 2.6k while not even a proper phone case was available for opo in Delhi's one of the biggest markets and to get the phone serviced under warranty you will have to wait 2 months.

You know what I rarely find a person who says money is not a problem. 1+ provided sd 801 at a price which was close to OG moto X. So in my point of view benchmark always represent half picture and usage scenario changes vastly from person to person.

How is galaxy note 3 Compared to these mobiles? I heard that Most lags disappeared after lollipop update ......
I think it is one of the best mobiles under 30k..... Note series are not preferred because of size and price issues but they are a class on their own.....
Regarding other models, I think other than s3 all the s series are crap.... My friend replaced his s5 in less than 3 months .....

Where Samsung rules is here:
Not only sales, service and spares should also be affordable....The Universal problem of smartphones is broken touchscreen.... some guy from a two-three tier city can order OPO online but cannot go and wait for many number of days if there is no proper service ...

Atleast Motorola and Asus are clever to expand their service network.....

There are very minimal lags on Lollipop Touchwiz ROM, at least I don't see any 'lag' to any unbearable extent! Of course it won't be Nexus 5 smooth, but it is much much better than half cooked UI of some other midrange cum flagship phones, G3 or G4 for example, which will turn down brightness automatically if you play GPU intensive game for long and might even give you a free reboot, as gift

I don't know if Note 3 is worth of 30+k in 2015, but at around 24-25k I don't see any better phone, that's all. At the same time Note 4 is selling at 32-33k on Ebay, which is another excellent option.
