I have never downloaded anything from the Epic store earlier-are their games playable in offline mode or do they require a permanent internet connection?

They can be played offline , there's offline mode in Epic Games too .

You should have EPIC in your PC. As they are releasing many FREE games weekly basis.
I now have 20+ FREE games from EPIC
