^^Gigabyte 790GX mobos start from 8k I think.

Anyways,

Rohan, If you want to go beyond 3.3GHz, you better get a stable motherboard having Solid State Capacitors, which would cost around 8k

You can overclock X3 720 till 3.3GHz on stock cooling and by increasing bus speed. But after that you have to play with voltages or you need to have a bigger and better cooler. At this level, for longevity of mobo, you need one with quality capacitors and FETs.

Also, on full load at 3.5-3.7GHz, it draws

If you want sales and service from same vendor, you need to pay a bit more and check in Computer Warehouse (MG Road), Computer Planet and Glasgow computers (SP Road)

^^That's an entry level solution and it won't be able to compete with X3 720 at all.

At stock speed it gives 20-40fps slower framerate in games. Yes, it can be overclocked to 3.8GHz but still it seriously lags behind Phenom II cpus.

Clock speed is not everything.

AMD:

Phenom II X3 720: 7.5k-8k
Gigabyte GA-MA790GP-DS4H: 9k orGA-MA78G-DS3H for 7k

Intel:

E8200: 8.5k
Gigabyte GA-EP45-DS3L: 6k
MSI P45 NEO3 FR PCB 1.1: 7k (solid capacitors and shielded chokes resulting in better power management)

Among these two Phenom II X3 setup will have lot more overclocking potential and will have better performance.

Budget solution only for overclocking:

Intel:

E5200 : 3.5k
MSI P7NSLI PLATINUM: 8k
One more 9600gt: 5k-5.5k
Put two 9600GTs in SLI mode.

AMD:

Athlon 64 X2 7750+ Black Edition (unlocked multiplier): 3.5k
MSI K9N2 SLI Platinium : 9k-9.5k or Gigabyte 780G board: 4.5k (no SLI/xfire)
One more 9600gt: 5k-5.5k
Put two 9600GTs in SLI mode.

If I am not wrong, ppl have hit 4ghz on Biostar TA 790gx with 720, of course the board is pretty cheap build and wont last long.

My question: I will be using my X3 720 @3.2ghz, will the brd last say 2 yrs at least.

And I am thinking of buying Gtx 260 but I have to downgrade my processor to 7750 BE. Is this going to affect the perfomance?

hell ya, the 7750BE even at it max 3.3Ghz will be highly bottleneck for a GTX 260. get an HD 4770 with the P2 730. HD 4770 oced beats HD 4850/GTS 250/9800GTX+[all stock] easily.

and the main problem i heard with Biostar Ta 790GX is with the 4th core activation on P2 X3. U have only 50% chance of doin it. Other than that the board is gud if not better than other 790GX mobos.

And with 3 yr warranty, what are u worried about if u dun plan on 4Ghz? Its not gonna explode or nythin...maybe becomes somewhat unstable when u approaches 4Ghz.

Upto 3.6Ghz is an easy deal, even 780G mobos does that.

I did a 500MHz overclocking with my Gigabyte board and have been using it for 3yrs and still it is pretty stable but with that Biostar mobo, I don't think it will be that reliable. And yes, it's better to be safe than to think that 3yr warranty can save the day. They can sometimes take more than a month and you will be left without a PC all that time.

So what will this board take the 720BE to?
and will this be a good one for gaming?

I am really confused now......

I think phenom 2 920 2.8 ghz @10200 with asus or gigabyte mobo with 790 gx chipset within 10k

And 4 gpu go 4 gtx 275 its better than gtx 260 and similar to gtx 285..'

I think GA-MA790GP-UD4H is the better one..
Anyways.. Does anybody have the solution for the BIOS issue?
Any idea how the MSIs fare in overclocking?
And I think Rohan is looking for DDR3 (M4A78T-E).

if u have budget of 15k~20k for motherboard+ processor, why not

E8400 8.8k+ Biostar I45 8k

it Will take E8400 beyond 4ghz and beats X3 720 hands down.

Only - is not tht much of future proof option.

@desiibond : dude, when i checked the reviews of x3 720 and x4 810, what i found is that, x3 720 performs better in some games and x4 810 performs better than x3 720 in most applications and some games too.. please check the review..

^^^^^^^^X3 can be used @3.8ghz with a cooler, so ths where it outstrips X4 810 in Games.

Why X4 when E8400 is around? Sure its dual core but for games thts the best prosessor for value.

@gowtham, what happens when you take X3 720 beyond 4GHz??

@Alex,

1) 720 is black edition, which means that the unlocked multiplier will be very helpful for overclocking. Increase of one point in multiplier increases CPU clock by 200MHz, which means you have lot more to play with.

In the case where buyer is not interested in overclocking, X4 810 will have advantage.

they managed to take x4 810 to 3.4 ghz adn x3 720 to 3.7ghz..

yea.. the x3 720 is black edition and x4 810 is not.. but please have a look at those benchmarks..

and i know x3 720 will go much higher if u use a better cooler.. but for that price u could get a x4 940.. so i think x4 810 with its one core advantage is better in this case..

^^^^^^^^^Fo playing games(current games). there would be no difference between 720 and 810. In fact 720 will perform better because of its potential overclock.
however for multithreaded apps and games(like gta 4, worldin conflict) the 810 might perform better.
