i have dell inspiron running vista basic and a xp desktop system...
i bought a cross over ethernet cable to connect both..
i gave the following details--->
desktop:
ip:192.168.1.136
subnet:255.255.255.0
gateway:192.168.1.1

laptop:
ip:192.168.1.140
subnet:255.255.255.0
gateway:192.168.1.1

i disabled firewall in both and created a workgroup HOME in both...
in xp it showed lan connected.. but in vista its coming limited connectivity...
i had my lan settings acc to hathway cable modem service earlier on both the systems..

can u help me to connect both successfully????

You can by changing the gateway of the desktop to the IP address of the laptop.

Also, what are you EXACTLY trying to do?
1. Do you want make a network of just the desktop and laptop? OR
2. Do you want to share internet across them?
Option 2 may not be possible because perhaps all ethernet ports may have been used

If you are trying option 1 make the laptop "Discoverable". Go to "Network and sharing center" and set the "Network Discovery" option to "Yes".

When I was trying to do the same thing, I remember I could access the laptop from desktop, but I could not ping it. However, I could ping the desktop from the laptop.
To see the other computer, select "View Workgroup computers" in XP and "Start> Network" in Vista.

Let me know if that helps!
