Yes they deserve all the hate and criticism but it's my beloved franchise, I'll see what they have to offer.

The "Off season April's fools joke" guy? I doubt anything like this will happen again, they probably will disallow any audience interaction. Especially because of the Free Hong Kong movement going on.

Only three characters? Perhaps there will be more in DLC. I also hope they don't do the always online bullshit that Diablo 3 did.

I doubt they'll let people ask questions. Maybe they'll send their own people to pose as crowd and ask. Risk is too high for them.

Even D3 does not have an offline mode. Game is expected to release late 2020 is what I read somewhere today. Reason being, they are developed for PS4 and Xbone both of which would go outdated within next 2-3 years due to their successors.

Yes that's not an issue , I recently purchased eternal collection again for switch lite, it does have offline and controller scheme.

I heard Diablo IV will have controller support on PC from the get go which is absolutely necessary in modern games :p

I was having that hope until today. Now that they are going back to older days of being more grim, old skill points system, old classes - I think it may not happen. For now, I am ok as long as they don't kill the D2 servers where my characters are saved. :p

Think there should be a military type character as well, like the Paladin and Crusader. Could be the Templar in a future DLC, seeing how D2 and D3 launched with 5 characters and added 2 more later in DLCs

Right. But there should be a good way to trade like in D2 as well. One of the best aspects I enjoy playing D2 till date is the grinding & trading of rare items, runes along with the game's simplicity itself. I don't like the D3's time-limited trading amongst players who were in the same game when the item dropped. In D3 everyone can easily get all gears for their class if they do a bit of grind, not the same in D2. One can play 500-1000 hours and not get a high rune. :) Even though the item list is pretty simple in D2, they have deadly drop rates making your find more valuable and hence making the trading scene more interesting.
Desmond
Desmond #75
Aug 12, 2022 at 10:00 AM
Yeah, I remember that you have to farm the countess for the Eth rune (I think).

But its likely that third party stores will spring up online selling these items. I think Blizzard don't want this to happen.

The season system seems a tad too complex. I guess it's just too profitable for them to not include it.
Unlike D3 seasons which is more or less similar to ladder concept in D2, wherein you start a new character and grind all the way up to get some seasonal unique rewards, D4 seems to throw in new gameplay features, questline (to reveal more of the world of Sanctuary and your character's place in it), rewards and even a seasonal endgame deadly boss. So this is a welcome move IMO. I never played any of the D3 seasons after the first 3 or 4 - it was just not enticing for me.

Promising reviews for the preview.

PC Gamer - Blizzard's long-awaited sequel is extroadinarily satisfying to play within minutes.

Gamespot - Diablo IV is quick to differentiate itself from its predecessors in almost every way, while intelligently iterating on new series staples with ideas that put freedom of play at the center.

Engagdet - This feels worryingly good. Don't fail me now, Blizzard.

PlayStation Blog - A more expansive, customizable loot-filled adventure. Journey through the Sanctuary with even greater freedom to play and look how you want.

NME - A hell of a good time. An unexpected delight, 'Diablo 4' is light on new ideas but a much-needed refinement of dungeon crawl design.

Push Square - 20 hours of Diablo 4 on PS5 has us believing in Blizzard's latest trip to Hell.

IGN - RIP to my free time. Diablo 4 feels like a massively plussed-up version of Diablo 2, which is the best-case scenario for it, in my book. Not that it ignores Diablo 3 – there are clear notes taken from the best of that game too – but tonally and artistically, it leans more heavily into the Diablo 2 playbook. Regardless, this is going to be a huge game by any definition.

Eurogamer - I've spent 10 hours with Diablo 4 and I'm sold - it's been worth the wait. Hell it's great!

CNET - Diablo 4 takes bleakness to a new level -- in a good way. Be ready to be disturbed.

Polygon - Diablo 4 is taking itself very seriously. The dark atmosphere of the next main Diablo game is more engrossing than expected.

GameRant - Delightfully Dreadful!

The Sun - A darker take on the devil!

With this amount of hype, expectations and initial impressions, they need to do A LOT BETTER during the release to avoid launch day server issues. Overwatch 2 launch was a catastrophe. D2 Resurrected was a mess which I witnessed myself (long queues, character rollbacks, progression lost, server login issues etc.)

I have a different opinion here. While I understand the fact that the collector's box gives an "incomplete" feel, this is a smart move by Blizzard in terms of manufacturing and reducing the number of SKUs for different platforms as well as giving the freedom to the user to buy the game edition they actually need. Otherwise, they'd have to print different key labels, different packing costs per platform and on top of it, they would have to force a particular edition of the game on the user even if the user doesn't care about cosmetics.

The only grudge I have with Blizzard this time is the exclusivity to Gear Store. Since the last CE (WoW Dragonflight), they've cut down the middlemen (Walmart, BestBuy, GameStop, Amazon etc.) for CEs. Good for Blizzard - more moolah, but extreme disadvantage for the customers as the shipping costs are exorbitant right now. One has to pay upwards of $100 additional to ship out of the Gear store regions ($200+ to India) and on top of it you'll have customs duty making the cost of CEs 2.5X more the actual CE cost.

Ok I'm finally done with the early access beta. All beta rewards completed.
Played for about 18 hours in total over the weekend. :)

Beta connectivity/login issues:
After the beta went live, their game login/queue mechanism was messed up where folks were put on queues for more than an hour. Adding to that was the frequent disconnections and getting punished further by lining up at the dreaded queue again. At some point I had 108 minutes of waiting to just get into the game's main menu where you select/create characters. Further, you have another queue to get into a game "session" which was comparatively better. Things were back to normal with < 1 minute queue timings (or instant) from the end of day 1. I hope Blizzard has learnt the lesson and will plan accordingly for the public beta next week as there will be tons of players trying to login.

Positives:
  1. The first thing that comes to my mind is the grim and eerie environment. Loved this!
  2. The map is huge. The beta gives limited access to quests in the first area (Fractured Peaks) but there is still much to explore and there are plenty of world events and side quests to spend time on. You will not be bored.
  3. BGM and sound effects were amazing! The death animations + sound effects are done well.
  4. Combat is great and killing quest bosses/world boss (Ashava) were not a cake walk. Died few times and had to strategically plan. Blizzard would announce world boss spawn timings for the weekend session.
  5. Drops are well balanced. I got about 4 legendaries in 18 hours, items for other classes were less than 10% dropped, which is good. Was able to steadily build the character.
  6. Skill tree is exhaustive, distribution is good and manageable.
  7. I did not party much but interaction with random players, trading, emoting were nice.
  8. Tons of item transmogrifications and character customizations (appearances)
Negatives:
  1. Bugs are expected as it is beta, so there were frequent disconnections, getting kicked out when trying to return to town (loading screen and gets out), some areas were buggy and not accessible.
  2. This is more of a hassle than negative. Mounts were unavailable for the beta. Although you'll have access to the stable and its master, cannot buy a mount. So had to walk a lot from place to place, even with waypoints.
  3. Story (from whatever revealed so far) has some twists in place but I was able to guess many things.
There is still so much more, so I'm looking forward to the full release!

The positives are a welcome sign. Will try out the open beta next weekend. But still gonna wait on buying it for a few months. Started D2R not too long ago (on Duriel, the pain train).
Any signs of the microtransactions plague that affected Immortal in this?

No, there will be an in-game shop in the final version but they will sell only cosmetics that has no advantage in-game.

OK....so started playing the open beta....and its Great. I feel its the Diablo we all needed after 2.
  • Like 007 said, the atmosphere of the world feels grim and eerie, be it out in the open or in a dungeon.
  • Graphics are great, so is the music. Really adds to the atmosphere when exploring the world or in combat, and its a huge world.
  • Combat is the striking feature as it should be and blizzard have done a really good job.
  • Started as a Rogue and by the time I reached level10 was already loving the combat. Skill tree has plenty of options for combat.
  • Faced a magnitude of performance issues. First time I loaded into a game, it froze with just my character and no textures loaded. Game froze quite a few times specially at the start or end of a conversation/cutscene. Biggest issue was the constant stuttering, which was even worse in city with other players around. Network issues. So yeah, beta for sure
  • Biggest plus I would say would be the dungeons. They're big and not so easy. Boss is a pain to beat unless you lower the difficulty tier or joined by other players, died a couple of times at the boss trying to solo.
Really looking forward to playing it, maybe a few months after release when all the launch day bugs/issues are ironed out and after looking at a few reviews.

Totally agree on this one. This should've been D3.

Faced a magnitude of performance issues. First time I loaded into a game, it froze with just my character and no textures loaded. Game froze quite a few times specially at the start or end of a conversation/cutscene. Biggest issue was the constant stuttering, which was even worse in city with other players around. Network issues. So yeah, beta for sure
Did you try lowering the texture quality? If not try this - keep overall graphics quality to High and reduce only textures. That improved the stability and fps/stuttering issue for me considerably. But yeah, they have a lot more to improve performance before release. Hope they deliver.

Biggest plus I would say would be the dungeons. They're big and not so easy. Boss is a pain to beat unless you lower the difficulty tier or joined by other players, died a couple of times at the boss trying to solo.
Two concerns I had with dungeons:
  1. Same repetitive design but devs have confirmed that there are over 100 designs and each area has a common format. So in beta, as only Fractured Peaks is available to explore, hence we see similar dungeons.
  2. Backtracking and exiting dungeon - Monsters respawn after a while so you may notice them again when backtracking after "completing" a dungeon. This is by design it seems. So I was always TP-ing to town and then running all over the map to the same location. I realized very late that there is a Exit Dungeon option in the emote wheel which we can use to go back to the entrance.
For this beta weekend, I tried my hands on PS5 with a Rogue.
Initial impressions:
  1. Zero lag and zero performance issues! No wonder games are optimized for consoles. Not even a single stutter that I saw on PC. It was a breeze to play from couch.
  2. I have never played any ARPG with a controller before. It was pretty easy and comfortable to play. I always had the wrong imagination that inventory management/comparison would be a nightmare with controller. That wasn't the case. Also managing health potions + skills + dodge during combat was great.
  3. Cross-progression, cross-play is amazing. My character from last weekend was available to resume right from that point. Can co-op with players from other platforms too. I played Rogue till level 5 and then resumed from laptop later. Only downside I see is the need to purchase another copy of the game for each platform.. looters

Its called Corpse Explosion. One of the iconic skills of Necromancer class across all Diablo games. You kill an enemy minion or monster, the corpse drops as usual which is unusable for other classes. Necro can cast corpse explosion spell to blast it to deal additional damage.

Mr.Diablo you're carrying the game on behalf of all Indians. :-D
 lol... I understand $69.99 is not a "regional pricing" but isn't it close to most AAA game standard prices on launch ($60)? It may be even more these days for some publishers I think. I've seen plenty of Indian folks pre-ordering Baldurs Gate 3, EA Battlefield games at full price and higher editions (some in TDF group too).

The base edition of D4 is simply good enough if one doesn't care about cosmetics. Considering the enormous amount of replayability value and one-time purchase, D4 should be worth it. It will be even better on some discounted sale after one year if people can wait (-10% or -20% usually, can't predict).

In my defense, in 10 years of "purchasing" games - I only pre-ordered Diablo games at full price. :-D

I am playing sporadically so I am not into the higher level farming yet. I am trying multiple characters and keep changing the skills as they are balancing many skills and high farming areas/dungeons left and right. (mostly nerfing) There are no bugs in my encounter and the journey has been so far great. Based on yesterday's announcement, there is a round of buffs coming up as part of a major first patch. Season 1 is going to start in July it seems.

Nice. Though I doubt the prices of existing products will go down.

I know it's a bit too late to ask, but is this always online like D3?

Yes it is. You'll have to be always online. The world/realm is shared among other players so its kind of a MMO implementation, though you don't have to necessarily party with anyone and play individually on your own quests.

Is the Console version Online only too ? D3 wasn't and I played it on my PS4 Pro.

It is a completely online only game, not sure why you think one platform would be online only & other will have an offline mode. That's just not how it works these days, even if the game can have a perfectly fine offline mode.

Yep, online needed for D4 on PS. You will get a server disconnected or network error screen if net fluctuates or if there is some actual server side issue. Like yesterday they launched new season and there was some queue pileup initially and server kicked out few times.

D3 was like that and hence my query. PC was always online but for console they removed that.

That is 12 years old, not a good comparison honestly. Those days some console games had local MP as well but PC didn't.
