hai all

one dummy question raises to me before getting into this.

i had desktop PC(XP) having the Seagate Hdd and running out of space and planning to opt this and willing to extend the Hdd.

my question is

can i opt the Western Digital Hdd(internal) and will it be the compatible with the existing seagate Hdd...?

What interfaces does your motherboard support?

Brand does not matter with compatibility.

My point is that as long as your motherboard supports the appropriate interface, it doesn't matter what brand hard drive you install.

Thanks for the information.

i think the motherboard(internal) supports every Hdd(Internal).

Serial ATA - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Parallel ATA - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

newer mobos don't have any pata ports.almost all current hdd's & optical drives are sata now-a-days.

True, but since he quoted a XP machine, I thought it might be older.

Simple way to identify : if your HDD is connected to Mobo with a white belt like cable then it is PATA (IDE) & it is connected with sleek (mostly red) cable then it is SATA.

most Mobo old or new support Min. 4 drives. so i dont think there is any issue of it.

i will suggest if you have PATA, go for an external (USB3 preferred for future-proof solution) HDD as in case you upgrade in future NO PATA is supported in new boards. if you have sata then go for if WD - Prefer caviar Black or blue & if segate go for Barracuda. Check for RPM & Catch (more is better) say if you can get 7200/7400 RPM & 64Mb Catch is better. if you have budget & afford WD velociraptor (comes in max 600 Gb) use it as a boot drive & other work files & for storage (movies, songs, Pix etc) use your old one. it will boost system performance. Even WD- C. Black is also very good drive. Avoid WD C. Green as it is a bit "Slow" Drive, But it is a bit cheap over Black / Blue.

getting old stock hdd is very hard now-a-days & it is a bad idea to buy a hdd with bad sectors at the beginning.except for exceptional cases where entire line of a particular line/model of a hdd is bad(read reviews/rating on online shopping sites like newegg, amazon etc) it all depends on luck.you may not face any problem with a 1yr warranty seagate for 5 yrs & face many problems with a 2/5yr warranty WD in 1 yr or just opposite.my suggestion is no matter which brand you buy always make a backup of important stuff on either DVDs(always confirm data is written correctly by copying back) or another hdd & regularly check your hdd & backup hdd by using softwares like crystaldisk(recommended freeware) or hdtune.
