look buddy laptops are meant for power saving modes and desktops have regular supplies , so you can write up to 8x on laptops but they they are coming with 16x burn support and @ 8x a 4 gb DVD will burn in 20 mins. to 30 mins..

It depends upon the DVD configuration. Mine takes 15 min to burn a DVD disc of 4.5GB at 8X. Configuration at my sig.

its great but at 12x in a desktop with my config or even 16 x it takes me around @14 mins at 16 x and 18 mins or so @ 12 x I have sony G120A the latest DVD rw drive with all 830 features but its OEM

and i dont have abad config i suppose

AMD athlon FX 74 @ 3.0
4 Gb dual channel transcend 800 mhx ddr2 JET RAM
ASUS M2N-MX mobo
650 WAtt antec PSU
8800 GTX 512 mb GPU
SONY 120 A DVD RAM drive(RW)
250 GB SEAGATE SATA II 3.0 GBPS

so not a bad config i suppose to write a DVD

the max cd burning speed u get is 24x on slim drives. it takes about 5 mins to burn a 700mb cd @ 24x and about 12-13min to burn a 4.5gb dvd @ 8x in my drive.
