Quick question- is it necessary to have an ethernet card for a cable modem internet connection(from airtel) or can the modem be connected with usb or something?

It depends on the modem, some do comes with USB connectivity and software for the same. Ethernet support is there on all. I prefer ethernet over USB as it is very simple, you can share internet over LAN using a switch and other such benefits.
