all i can say that it depends upon you
the game title library is huge in PC as compared to PS3, but PS3 on the other hand is simple
(i mean every console is simple -just insert disc and play)

so your decision finally

get a GPU.

you get better image quality and performance, cheaper games.

PS3= higher long term cost while PC= higher short term cost.

its a bit like inkjet vs laser printer.

As you can see in my sig, I own an awesome PC, and I also own a PS3.

My previous setup was also better than the PS3 and that was ~ 3 years ago btw.

Your setup with a 6950 2GB will blow a PS3/X360 out of water and make it implode.

Try to get the best model which also has dual BIOS.then you can attempt a mod into 6970 and get free extra performance.

If it doesnt work then you can always restore the old BIOS

My vote goes for the GPU. As piyus said, the PC game library is quite huge as compared to the PS3. Also, PS3 games will cost more than PC games. So, getting a HD 6950 2GB is the best bet.
But if you want some similar gaming experience as that of your PS3, you can add a XBOX PC game controller to your rig too.

@piyush : Yeah ... Dats wat.... it is simple ...
Also the controller play is awesome ....
But I also think wont games luk n sound better on lcd 32' + home theater ...
Also I get a blu - ray player inbuilt wid a ps3 ....
Blu ray player as a stand alone costs alot ..

@Extreme Gamer :
Games designed for ps3 and pc should give same performance on pc as well as ps3 .... (Correct me If I`m wrong...)

There is also another point ... I can save up money and buy a decent gfx card for my pc in a year or so ... But I can`t buy a PS3 by saving money ... Also U get EMI options if u buy from electronics store .... Dats not poss 4 gfx card .. AFAIK ....

Also I think putting PS3 in my living room should keep my gaming under control .... Coz if I have a gaming rig in my room ... then its all play n no work for vizkid2005 !!! :p

Dude u have a PS3 ... How is PSN ??? Worth it ???
Did u jailbreak ur ps3 ???
If yes , how ???

But Seriously guys ...

Wats My best bet ???

I didnt jailbreak my PS3.

I dont use PSN for shopping. But it has good interface.I use it for free DLC and addons that need to be downloaded.

Your best bet is a new GPU.

If you are ok with spending 2-3k on recent games then...

Maybe I`ll go wid 6950 .... I saw screens on the web for ps3 vs xbox 360 vs pc
PC was far better ..
I`ll Save money for the ps4 !!! Wat say !!!

6950 or 560ti ????
Should have an HDMI port ... If I hook it up to my TV !!!

Newhere I can find it in Mumbai ???
I can`t ship from smc ... For some reason ...
I have to get it from Mumbai ....
Smc prices are way lower .. any competant seller in Mumbai .. Primeabgb don`t have it ....

get the 6950. get one with dual bios if possible and mod it to 6970.

if mod fails you can recover it.

but before attempting it capture your bios.

The game quality of a PS3 is not that bad. I have both a PS3 and gaming rig. I now enjoy games more or PS3. It is more hassle free. Depends what type of games you like.

you can get GTX 560 Ti Factory Overclocked editions like MSI GTX 560 Ti Twin Fozer II/OC instead of HD 6950 2GB.

Again, it is your wish. Flip a coin and get any.

There is no point in always remaining confused. Just decide and get it. You can't go wrong. :)

most of them, but still some can be unlocked, without not being unlocked, a HD 6950 can perform better in higher resolution especially with higher image quality.

PHYSX does look good provided its designed nicely. Batman AA is a prime example.

It does matter in a way. If you spent 15k on a GPU you would like to see some..."stuff".

Try Prime ABGB.

i have told this 100 times. physx is nothing more than a gimmick by nvidia to make u buy their cards. it just enables a few cosmetic effects in 4-5 games. no effect on gameplay whatsoever.

and enabling physx on nvidia card takes a heavy toll on your fps and it will decrease ~50%. unless u have a really high-end card like gtx 570 or gtx 580.

another point..game developers could have very well implemented those effects without using this proprietary technology from nvidia.

lastly, ur friend has no idea about he is taking about. there are various other reasons for nvidia fans to prefer a nvidia card. sadly physx is not one of them. as of now it is gimmicky and hasnt taken off and never will. no game-dev is ever going to implement it in the core of the game as they want their game to run equally well on both amd and nvidia cards. but then u do find some devs who get into deals and implement some cosmetic features/effects.

i can only name 4-5 games which utilize physx - mafia 2, metro 2033, mirror's edge, batman arkham asylum. all it does in these games is, it enables some random debris and gunshot effects which have no effect on the *gameplay*. just good looking cosmetic effects with a not-worth toll on frame rate. the only upcoming game utilizing physx this year i can name is, batman: arkham city.

cuda and ati stream are now equally well supported by most applications. so this point is moot. comparing the video transcoding performance of both cuda and ati stream in Anandtech's sandy bridge review, ati stream outperformed cuda greatly in terms of video quality. although it was a bit slow, only a bit. nvidia cuda greatly helps if you are into Folding@Home (google) but these people are soon going release an updated client which makes good use of ati stream. but i guess this doesn't matter to u as u are not into folding. adobe and autodesk's applications are utilizing both cuda and stream. so an even contest.

next comes multi-monitor setup. ati eyeinifinity is better than nvidia surround in this case. it supports more monitors per gpu and is more mature.

next is "3d gaming" in which you use a 3d monitor and then 3d glasses. in case of nvidia, u enable "3d vision" from the driver and then buy a "nvidia 3d vision" certified monitor and then "nvidia 3d vision kit" which again costs 10k or ~$150. in case of amd "hd3d" u buy 3rd party $20 worth software which applies stereoscopic effects. u can buy any 3d monitor/television supporting hdmi 1.4 and any cheap 3d glasses. ur wish.

summing everything up.

my choice here will be hd 6950 2gb. why? 2gb vram will be better in the long run. it will let you play at higher resolutions with high antialiasing due to higher VRAM compared to 1GB vram of gtx 560 ti.

and now if anyone asks these useless questions, link this post of mine to them.

im also compare the linux support of both the companies now.
on linux nvidia's proprietary driver is great but open source driver known as xf86-video-noveau is way way way below par. why? because nvidia doesnt support open source. on the other hand, amd's proprietary driver is average much because they update their proprietary driver monthly. but on the other hand, amd's open source driver xf86-video-ati is great and works out of the box in every distro. why? amd pays the open source developers for developing it.

PHYSX does look good provided its designed nicely. Batman AA is a prime example.

It does matter in a way. If you spent 15k on a GPU you would like to see some..."stuff".
i completely beg to differ here. i'd rather play 100s of other games at higher settings than playing 4-5 games with physx on. had it been an open technology like Bullet, i'd have agreed. at the end of the day, 98%+ developers still run the physics engine off the cpu. crysis 2, bf:bc2 and upcoming battlefield 3 etc.

^^ I totally agree with that, specially when a HD 6950 can be unlocked to HD 6970 & is capable of delivering almost 90% performance of HD 6970, so why spend for GTX 560 Ti when both are priced same ? & with higher image quality (8x AA or 16x AF) HD 6950 performs better & is closed to GTX 570, sometimes OC HD 6950 beats GTX 570 in some games too. So, HD 6950 really has class of its own (as stated by AMD).

@ op

Don't get confused mate. A ps3 has lots of pros and very less cons. First and foremost, it should not be compared with a pc.

You cannot play ps3 exclusives on a pc can you. Absolute gems like uncharted (series), god of war 3, infamous, resistance, heavy rain, killzone, gran turismo 5 , twisted metal, The last guardian etc can only be experienced on a ps3 and not with a 100+k congig with a 6950 xfire.

Sure you can get a gpu but that does not mean you should not get a ps3. If gaming is your only requirement, then get a ps3 to enjoy these exclusives.

A good pc along with a ps3 will cover all your gaming needs. You can play the multiplatforms on the pc and exclusives on the ps3. Pc and ps3 cannot be compared in terms of hardware.

So get a ps3 now and get a 6950 later for your pc.

I seriously beg to differ. How many physx enabled games have you played buddy? The ones you've named above , did you really play them with physx on? If you had, then i don't think you'd be saying all that. Gpu accelerated physics code is the future rather than the older cpu based methods due to the more flexible parallel architecture that can process complex algorithms better than a general purpose cpu.

Yes , physx is proprietery and there's absolutely nothing wrong with it. Check the following screenshot:

*img219.imageshack.us/img219/2/220pxmafiaphysx.jpg

Its from mafia 2. The top shot is done with apex physx on which actually work on particle, clothing, vegetation, destruction & turbulence effects.

Compare that to the bottom one with the feature turned off. What you see is most of the glass debris have dissappeared giving a quite unrealistic feeling.
What you call simple cosmetic effects are actually shaping up to provide some realistic and real world experience to the overall gameplay. In other words , its part of the gameplay.

Imagine turning of all post processing effects in a shader heavy game and play it. You will get 100+ fps and absolutely no change in gameplay. But tell me, is the game really developed to play like that?

The answer is a big no. We need realism but its not everybody's cup of tea. But people who can pay extra to get them, should get them.

You don't need 100+fps in all games and buy accelerators accordingly. The game should be playable and people should enjoy the game in the way its meant to be played.

You are saying physx will never take off, but the way i see it, its already taking off. Physx 3.0 is on the horizon and it will now along with the desktop platform, will be featured in the tablet and smartphone platform courtesy, nvidia's tegra 2 based soc's and their derivatives.

You don't like physx, thats fine. But don't say that the games look stupid or there's no much difference in the gameplay aspect and all that stuff. It was never made to change gameplay but to change the look and feel of the game and pave way for realism.

Open source physics engine like bullet, open dynamics engine etc. are also great and will be embraced by the community no doubt.

This part is not worth discussing from a gaming point of view. But cuda is a more mature platform than stream and much more app support currently. The folding example you gave is one of them. Nvidia is actually one of the pioneers of gpgpu computing. Sure streams support is growing leaps and bounds but it still has some catching to do.

You've got to admit that amd is way behind nvidia currently as far as 3d gaming is concerned. Amd's current support is paltry and require specific hardware which are not easily available. If you never followed, nvidia has announced cheap wired 3d glasses for the 3d vision kit. Thats gonna cut cost down. Besides you don't need nvidia certified monitor for 3d vision. Any monitor having 120mhz refresh rate and 3d capable can work fine with 3d vision. Same applies to all 3dtv's available in the market. They are all compatible.

AFAIK amd hd3d needs specific monitors for 3d to work which are scarcely available. But blueray 3d playback is supported in all 3dtv's using amd's hd3d.

Nvidia is the only platform currently to give eyefinity+3d which they call 3d surround. Currently, this is not possible with amd i guess. But that said, hd3d has immense potential and expect this to be almost equal to 3d vision in the times to come.

.

My sum of all things is pretty similar with ICO. Flip a coin and decide between 6950 and gtx 560-ti. 2gb vram is never useful in fullhd and that is not at all a usp of 6950.

But it becomes useful when you use two of them in tandem using cf and play in higher resolutions. More vram is required in these scenarios.

At fullhd, 560-ti gives similar performance as a 69502gb. But its in multigpu setup, the latter has an advantage due to frame buffer.

So if playing at resolutions like 2560x1600 or in an eyefinity setup or planning to crossfire and play in a mutimonitor setup, a 69502gb will be worthwhile over a gtx 560-ti.

Else, its again a toss of a coin.

not at all. quoting from tomshardware
Unlike 3D Vision, AMD’s HD3D technology doesn't require a specific display with an AMD-licensed technology built in. Instead, you only need a consumer 3D display that supports HDMI 1.4—a 3D television for example—and plug it into your Radeon HD 6800 series graphics card.
