CTC - click to continue!

Hi Guys,

I just thought there should be one place on this forum where you can get direct, no-nonsense answers straight from the Editor. Suggestions, queries and more welcome here.

Please don't post troubleshooting or generic questions here, this is only for those who want to ask questions about the content that Digit provides, the direction Digit's headed in, suggestions for upcoming issues, www.thinkdigit.com, etc.

Great idea Raaabo. Good to see you posting again. I will have a few queries lined up in a week or two specially for you. Might just help me in some of my projects. :)

One humble suggestion : Is there no way you can improve the present status of the forum? There's gotta be something you can do and we can help. All I want is :

A forum which takes lesser time to load.
A system wherein links are in blue colour so that we may be able to distinguish between words and links. (Helps keep spammers at bay easily).
No advertisements for those who are logged in to the forum. (Anyway most number of visitors are Guests and the members don't click at all)

I can assure you that these three simple suggestions, if implemented will go a long way in taking this forum back its olden glory days. More members will stay. This will only help those looking to interact with you here as a well maintained and clean lobby always makes a good impression on the Interviewers. :)

Our technical team just made some changes yesterday, which has helped the site and forum load a lot faster than it was before. Let me know if you guys have noticed this.

URLs now appear in blue.

As for advertisements, as any other editorial person I would like nothing more than an ad free experience everywhere I go, or spend time, however, we have to be realistic, and accept the advertising for what it is. Compared to a lot of other forums, and other media, I would still say that thinkdigit has fewer in your face ads. We have been trying to place ads in a way that it will interfere with content as little as possible. I'm open to suggestions on how we can improve this to benefit both advertisers as well as forum members.

I will also be focusing on making the broken Ajax work again.

Thats a good idea Raaabo.

There are advertisements in every site, but in Thinkdigit, I feel they are highly more noticeable and interfere with our browsing. The thing which actually annoys me and most of the people is the narrowness of the forum.

The blue which you used was hurting to the eye. Please use a blue which does not do so. Even I would agree with you about ads being necessary, but can you please give us our forum width back? Content is why people come here, so if you must keep ads, then please make sure that it does not hinder the reading flow. One easy way to do this is to keep the ads above and below the forum. Above the first post on every page and below the last post or even better below the quick reply box.

Yes, I agree with ico. The ads here are especially annoying. Not so much the image based ads, but the flash based ones. These are the ones that eat bandwidth too. Text based ads are even less of a problem, as long as they are placed in such a way that they don't hurt our reading flow, as suggested above.

As for the forum speed. I wish I could say better, but I just did an apt-get for Opera so that there is no cache factor to speak of. The page took 15 seconds to load. This is not good at all, especially considering that I am getting download speeds of 60Kb/s. Please address this issue as many people have much much slower internet connections, I can't imagine how long the page must be taking for loading on their computers.

EDIT: This blue looks better than the older bright one.

Regarding the loading time for website, there has been a noticeable improvement for me.
saqib_khan
Dec 7, 2009 at 8:15 PM
As far as ads are concerned, they are more noticeable, like everyone is saying. But we are saying this from a long time. It seems no one cares about this.

Another thing. I would like links colour to be black only.

BTW, this error still occurs on replying, eventhough I am replying for the first time.
The following errors occurred with your submission:

This forum requires that you wait 30 seconds between posts. Please try again in 29 seconds.

Great idea Raaabo. Indeed there is some improvement in loading time for website..

Here are some of the suggestions from my end:-
1. Link colour should be reverted to black.
2. When we click on Edit Button to edit a post, it opens in a new window! Can u fix that forum bug? It's quite irritating, specially when we have to edit our post for trifle things.
3. Not to forget mentioning, those Ads? I really can't understand why day by day the no. of ads is increasing by leap and bounds? As ico mentioned its quite irritating to surf this forum in a narrow width. Hmmmm can u install some forum plugin that lowers the no. of ads for a logined member, but keep the no of ads same of a non-logined member/Guest? If this is implemented then it will be great and will help a lot to regain activity from its old members? Frankly there was a time when TDF used to be my homepage, but its no more longer my homepage! Just think from this view, "What will be the use of Ads when no-one 'actually' visit this forum"..This forum is running because of good & OLD posts by old member and that's the reason u see so many guest in this forum viewing pages..But soon the no. of guest will decrease as this forum is not getting updated..Hope u get my point :)
4.Just a thought:- :rolleyes:
Can you make a function which gives option to select some 'cool' & 'good' themes..Such as choice of theme? Kirsch Theme, Evo Theme, and other good one..User will select a theme and from then onwards whenever he open forum, it opens in respective theme?

Hello! I am The Sorcerer. 3 questions, for now:
Out of curiosity, one of your testers already got a lian li a71f case, so do readers will get an opportunity to get to read a review about it?
Also I was wondering if there would be an active admin who will be empathetic and work towards the progress of the forum?

@ Krazzy I am of the opinion that if URL's are black, then how do you distinguish between them and any normal post? I think URL's in posts should be blue at least. I don't if they are not blue anywhere else.

@ Raaabo Yeah, give us an option of choosing theme please. Kirsch theme is great. Very good for those who are here to read. Please take heed of my suggestion with respect to ad placement. As an editorial person, you very well know that we all are here to read posts, not to view ads etc. So please ensure that ads don't hinder our reading process. Also, as we have been saying. 90% of visitors are guests, so why not remove ads for users who are logged in? The "other" forums that we visit do this for sure. I can even link you to one forum, where most of our old and respected members have migrated to. They manage to run so well sir, then why not us.

You and Anorion are our only remaining hope.

Hi there everyone,
Didn't know where to post this so am posting this here.

FOR DIGIT STAFF

I am very annoyed with the way Digit has handled my issue here. Despite mentioning my new address while renewing my subscription, my address wasn't updated. That is fine considering there might be a technical fault. But here starts the problem.

I sent two mails to the Digit Helpdesk (help@thinkdigit.com) but haven't even received a single reply regarding my address change. Two times I sent the old and new address but not even a response. Today, I came to know that my issue has arrived at the old address. Why is it like this? At least someone better encourage my query. Very sad.

Now the next day I will know that my gifts have been sent back due to the fact that I was not physically present there to receive the items. I thought that Digit has changed a lot in the past 2 years and had no problems before but as soon as I subscribe again, this has happened.

My details are-

Personal Info removed by Raaabo

And if I don't receive a response here too, what am I supposed to do? How do I reach the appropriate person to address my grievances? Hope my issue is looked at as soon as possible.

Hi Dr Das,

I've forwarded this as a mail to our helpdesk. Let me know if you do not receive a confirmation of the changes from them by Monday, 14th December.

You can also write to me at editor @ think digit . com (without spaces), in case you do not receive this confirmation of the address change.

Hi Raabo,
Thanks a lot. Already received a confirmation of it by mail. Extreme thanks for the help.

And Raabo, congratulations for being the editor of Digit. I do know that it is too late a compliment now but I came to know it at the very last issue of my subscription 2 years back and thus just couldn't wish to you. Keep it coming. Me and my kids using whose ID I am responding in this forum are very enthusiastic to renew our subscription with Digit. My elder son especially was in tears when I had ended the subscription for his studies. Now it is again great to see him very happy with the new Digit. Even Digit has provided me with a lot of tech knowledge and can thus proudly say that I am a Digitian too. :thumbs:

A suggestion here - Can you include reviews of Music Systems and LCD/ Plasma TV? I think reviews for LCD TVs have started but for the other two - not yet. It would be great to see them.

Thanks again for your help Raabo and looking forward for an enjoyable experience with Digit.

With regards,
Dr. Tapan Kumar Das

Raboo. Hi,

In the month of October/09 I get three of my DVD's Not working and I contact the helpdesk through mail. They asked me to mail back the defective Disks back to digit head quarter at Mumbai. I send them through Registry on 17.10.2009 from "Bhotia Paroa- Haldwani Dist. Nainital" Post office. Registry Sl. No. 450.

But since then I had not got any response nor the DVD's.

Hope you will look into matter. Rest later.

Dr. Tapan Kumar Das

We're thinking about including reviews for music systems as well, but we're still finalising the testing procedures (since it's a category we haven't tested before). We want to make sure that there is a standard testing procedure that can apply to all types of systems, is completely unbiased and fair, and meets industry standards; only then will you see such a review in Digit. Hopefully, we should have that all sorted in a few months.

Hi Raaabo,

One thing I was thinking for a long time, why there are no ads of Digit in print media?
No, seriously, u r "The" most successful and old tech mag of India, why don't u advertise?

Now, don't say u don't need advertisement? Everyone needs it right?!

I'm not talking about advertising on print media about how good and awesome ur mag is? how it has helped public or how old it is...I'm asking about printing mag's cover page twice for any issue.
E.g. if its January issue, print the cover page once b4 its launching date (Next issue, coming soon etc title)
And another after it launches in market (released, published, on-stand etc title)

P.S. Saw ur ad in Mint. Good move. U guys got a full column where u were dedicated only one-two reviews. QnA, Review, Tips...good.

Would love to see u guys doing a TV Show like tech2 someday:rolleyes:

(Am I being unrealistic? I don't know. Am I being emo? May be. Digit holds some important part of my life, so I sometimes tend to overdo things)

can you please get this issue with BenQ rollover ad fixed.

The rollover ad stays expanded *img191.imageshack.us/img191/3501/tdfrolloverad.th.jpg

This is really really awkward. every time I scroll up the page or load new page that ad stays in expanded mode for few seconds not allowing me to use the drop down menu.

I am trying to get used to TechEnclave now as this forum is going worse week after week.

Continuing from this thread: *www.thinkdigit.com/forum/showthread.php?t=123454&page=3
I understand the complaints, and yes I'm guilty of being too busy to rectify things soon enough. Allow me to try and change that.
I recommending thinking about improving the forum's life by the time making/attempting/planning to make change the forum.You can try this similar pattern where it has worked resurrecting another Indian tech forum, but it should work here:

# Pick up 3-4 mods and give them moderator access throughout the forum. Don't choose people who are good advisors, rather choose those who can command and take care of the sections swiftly and won't be intimated so easily even if the majority of the people decide to go wild. Create order by flushing out the chaos.

# After a month/2 months of cleanup, depending who did what, assign super moderator acess who have cleaned the forums as admins- most likely 2. Give them a chance of around 2 weeks and then exchange the super mod rights with the other 2.

# Assign someone who is responsible enough to be something like an assistant admin. Let him make decisions what is good for the forum and make changes accordingly.
-
This will take a lot of time (a year atleast) but its way more effective in the long run. As a tech forum who runs a tech magazine is naturally assumed to be ethically bound to make a healthy community.

Also, I think its best if apology is not used as well :). Don't take it in the wrong way, but these people have been loyalists for a very long time, and I am sure you agree that apologizing to people who hoped for a change for ages is pretty much equivalent to rubbing salt on one's wound. Make the call!

^^^+1

And I would like to add something.

1. The "Post Quick Reply" button doesn't works it is redirects to advance page. And that "This forum requires that you wait 30 seconds between posts" error is wat I always face even I'm posting ater 30 sec's and already the reply has been posted. Thats why we always encounter same posts two times(which we need to edit everytime).

2. The edit button never works in a single click.

3. The forum is so heavy that when I'm running utorrent the forum never opens, even doesn't get refresh. I need to pause utorrent each time if I need to reply to a thread, create a new thread or just refresh or clicking "new posts" links. Please make it light.

4. As krow said, make the forum wider please.

5. The ads is either side and top and bottom are no problem as said by krow. But this BenQ rollover add is really frustrating. I don't remember how many times I have clicked that add while cliking "New Posts". Please fix it.

6. And my last suggestion would be.....I know you all are really busy with the Magazine and for all your hard effort the magazine is No. 1 magazine of India(May be in the World). So assign some admins/mod for the forum. With whom we can interact if we r facing any problems and get fast reply. I mean if there is no problem assign some peoples who will only work as admin/mod for the forum. Otherwise you can also give mod permission to trusty, old members of this forum(like desiibond, Krow, rhitwick etc.) We can contact them for any prblem and in turn they can contact you(if needed).

Lastly thanx for the great magazine. Loooking forward for a great forum as well. And sorry for my bad english. Please manage. :)

I'm looking at the code to see why the error happens.

For the rollover AD. If you keep your mouse hovered over the ad it will stay large, move your mouse away from the ad and it returns to normal size.

I've tried IE 6 / 7 / 8, with the latest flash player version, on XP, Vista and 7, and I still cannot recreate a problem with that ad. It seems to function the way it is supposed to.

I will be reviewing the mods we have. Most of them are doing a splendid job. The problems with this forum are, however, not something the mods can fix, and thus when complaints are made, they are helpless.

# After a month/2 months of cleanup, depending who did what, assign super moderator acess who have cleaned the forums as admins- most likely 2. Give them a chance of around 2 weeks and then exchange the super mod rights with the other 2.

Again, the problems that exist cannot be solved from a control panel. The only rights the mods do not have are to this feedback forum, which is controlled only by team digit, and delete user rights. Other stuff like running SQL queries, or making announcements, which Admins can do, are also not possible for the mods.

Team Digit will be taking more initiative here. So far, we've started interacting with the community in so many other ways, including offline interactions, and webinars, workshops and the like, apart from making sure the magazine and DVDs and Fast Track and Digit TV are done in time, so free time is scarce. However, we'll make a renewed effort here, starting today.

Also, I think its best if apology is not used as well :). Don't take it in the wrong way, but these people have been loyalists for a very long time, and I am sure you agree that apologizing to people who hoped for a change for ages is pretty much equivalent to rubbing salt on one's wound. Make the call!

I'm also one of those loyalists, and am trying to make sure that we can fix whatever possible as quickly as possible. It will take a few weeks, but everything ought to be as good as new soon. I'm not ashamed to admit that in the past year or so, I haven't had too much time for this forum, and that was a mistake. As I've told you guys before, I treat other Digitians as family, and before even starting to fix the errors, I felt I should apologise for not making more time. I fail to see how me apologising is rubbing salt in anyone's wounds, and those who feel that way most certainly do not know me well enough, or long enough.

Here's what's going to change:

1. Code bugs have to be found and fixed. We have an action plan that should have this completely sorted in no more than a month. This applies to errors and the broken Ajax.

2. Things need to be speeded up again, and the theme needs to be changed. I'm open to suggestions for the theme. Suggest them here, and then we can then post a poll to decide on what themes are popular amongst the members. There is only one criteria, the theme should be minimalistic and fast when loading. I suggest Kirsch, because it was my favourite.

3. Some re-ordering of content has to be done - more forums and sub-forums to re-order all the hundreds of thousands of posts that are here. I'm also usually against deleting content, but I think a little pruning in sections will not hurt. I will need the mods to help me with this.

4. Trying to find a more fool-proof way of keeping the spammers off the forum, to enable a slight relaxation of rules for the others. This should end the "cannot post for 30 seconds" error, and the code fixes should prevent the double post error.

5. I'm also looking at other ways to improve the interactivity here, and will keep you posted on the changes made.

I will start a new thread once we start making changes in a week or so, to make sure everyone's aware of what's happening, every step of the way.

As I said, I will take the moderator list under consideration. Most of the mods / admins surf in invisible mode.

Made a few changes:

1. Re-ordered the forum home page to make a little more sense.
2. Added thread prefixes ("Want to Buy" & "Want to Sell"). So choose the appropriate thread prefix when posting in Bazaar.

Do you think it's better to have thread prefixes instead of the "I want..." forum? The prefixes enables anyone to sort by people selling or buying, so it might be better to have everything in one Bazaar forum, so that those just surfing can see both sellers' and buyers' threads... your thoughts please.

Dec 30, 2009 at 6:07 PM
^^^Thats a great idea raaaboo. You are right. Rather than "I want...." the prefixes will be much better. And all the post related to transactions will be in same bazaar section and can be identified by WTB/WTS.

It's really a brilliant idea.

Hey Raaabo good to see you actively replying here.

Well, we had one "Forum Improvement..." thread, u made it sticky, how about digging it up?

And the basic requirement I think we need is speed, the forum loads so slowly in IE that it just diminishes the excitement of being connected with digit family for a newbie.

Then, obviously bug fixing...

@Others, I think MODs are doing good job. Now we don't have the SPAM probs as previous so having 3-4 mods online always is not required I think.

I would suggest take 4 mods from existing and ask them their most suitable time for visiting the forum and order them as well.
Divide them as Day mod and Night mod (as not everyone would be able to MOD this forum everytime)
In day time MOD A will take care of forum on his suitable days of week (eg. Sun, Mon, Tue) and MOD B rest of the days. Similar for Night mods.

1. Full control access is a tricky deal, with, as you said yourself, security issues.
2. I know about NeatDigit, and I even featured it in the magazine, if you guys remember :) Let me see what can be done about ADs. They will always be there, we can't avoid that, but let's see how we can improve them.
3. As I said, I'll see the activity of the current mods, and then decide. I will also see how we can increase the amount of time that other Admins spend here.

I think that was the buggy / broken Ajax causing that. It seems to not happen when Ajax is disabled.

I've now kept Ajax disabled, so can someone post a few places and confirm that this stupid problem is now fixed? Temporarily, of course, because I will need to fix the darn Ajax and get quick reply / edit / other stuff working with Ajax sometime soon. Works for me in the mod sandbox...

Thanks for the replies, Raaabo. :)

Here are a few more problems:

1)
*img685.imageshack.us/img685/5218/snapshot1i.png I think you can notice the missing options. The text is missing over there. If you click on those empty rectangles, they do lead you to the desired page.

2)
*img683.imageshack.us/img683/7968/snapshot2h.png When I click on my name, it doesn't lead my to my profile which it does in other forums. So, when I tend to receive a visitor message, I have to find a random post of mine and go to my profile from there.

Raabo,

thanks for tying to fix the bugs in the forum. Edit looks to be fine now in Ubuntu FF. haven't testing it yet on IE8. will let you know.

regarding the rollover ad. that benq ad stays in expanded mode when page is loaded initially and then works the way it has to. Still it irritates a lot as I use the path under "Featured Story" to go through posts and because of this ad, i have to move the mouse carefully so that the mouse don't go to that border. Is it possible to put some gap between the path and the ad or just disable the rollover action and let that ad be just an ad.

also, In the images that I posted earlier, my mouse was NOT on the and it was nowhere near that.

Yea, that thing is fixed now.

Secondly, I was thinking whether a fresh install of all the vBulletin scripts might fix most of the problems? Because I think, AJAX problems are actually quite deep. Image attachments also don't work. I do understand that you might have to do considerable amount of modifications even after that.

desiibond, I give up, I can't recreate your problem, and since you're saying it works the way it's supposed to after loading, I'm downgrading your "problem" to "weird one-off minor irritant". Just live with the ad while I fix other things.

Try playing minesweeper, it improves pointer accuracy ;)

Oh and as for the Ajax... huuuge problem and tonnes of code / modifications to go through before I find the error, so don't expect that fix before a few weeks.

I can keep doing minor ones like these though ;), so keep those coming.

Yes, this is certainly better. The community menu has also started to work now which it wasn't earlier.

Gamerz section is visited regularly and can be above the Education section on the main board. Keeping it at the bottom isn't justified.

A separate forum for the discussion of Broadband related problems (ISPs, plans, advice) can be made. Thats what many forums have done. Earlier we had BSNL and MTNL threads which were stuck in the Chit-Chat section, but they are now lost. Threads related to the ISPs and Broadband equipments are popping up in random sections, thats why I feel a separate section would/can be better.

I just saw that vBulletin 4.0 is out and it is a major upgrade. If ThinkDigit is planning to implement it on the site, then it is highly likely that an upgrade might solve most of the issues as it will be clearing out the bugged PHP scripts of the current version.

First of all, my Sincere respect to you for Starting this 'Clean the messup' mission. If you have started this mission before a week or two..would have been very nice of you. It is sad to know that only a rebel thread or members leaving only will grab your attention. What i mean is.. don't you know that there is problem with quick reply, edit, page loadings, ads, server downs, etc...etc... before? And you didn't paid attention towards these flaws. I am not blaming you.. coz, we are equally responsible for the bad time of this forum. And please understand that i said these words because of the love and affection i have towards this forum.

Any way.. my suggestions...

1) Content is what makes the members stick to the forum. If the forum is facing the bad time.. it is not because of the quick reply feature, roll over ads, edit buttons, theme, etc. All these problems will not have a chance before a information distribution and community creation. By the gods grace the community creation has been a success because.. every one in the forum loves every one. But the content is what lacking in the forum.. except in the chit chat section.. new threads are not rolling in... And there is only updation of old threads. There should be change in this attitude. Members need initiative for that change. And that initiative should be from you guys. Mods are not being active in general forum business and add admins in this department too(anorion is exception for this). Admins and mods Spend ample amount of time in sharing the information. After all they are the forum leaders.

2) Next major thing you should think about is about the attachments. Please fix the attachment bug or simply remove that feature.

3) At any point of time.. the number of registered users who use neatdigit or CSS who don't click even a single ad will be less than the guests who don't use neatdigit extension and CSS who don't click the ads either because of the ugly forum look. It is not the theme that is making the forum to look ugly.. It is the banners on the two sides.. Banner on left side is acceptable for some extent. I know that you are not the guys who made that decision.. but please do take the risk of telling our problems to your officials. And always remember that what most matters is, 'how forum will appeal to guests' as they are your future registered members

4) For good or bad.. Remove the Users' Post count feature.

5) And Change the head of CHIT-CHAT and FIGHT CLUB from 'Bandwidth' wastage to some thing other like 'FREE TIME TALK', 'GOD'S GRACE','HEAVEN'S SAKE','MOUTH FREAKS',etc. It really hurts to know when the section named 'BANDWIDTH WASTAGE' is the most active section in the forum.

6) A dedicated section for INTERNET, FREEWARES, GAMING CONSOLES, will increase the extent of information exchange in the forum.

7) I know this sounds awkward to you.. please increase the size of the user's avatar.

8) now after 7, what is the number??? A smiley? Please take care of this.. It hurts back there when i post a number and it converts into smiley.

9)A bit close interaction with the user's will be appreciated. I mean.. To send PM wishing for birthdays, Dropping a Email when he has been miserabled, Encouragement PMs if you see a new guy posting something good or great.

If i have posted something wrong, it should be obvious to you/everyone as I am a noob.

Great Changes Raaabo.. Great to see that you're implementing some sub-section..

---------- Post added at 02:57 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:48 PM ----------

Here are some of the suggestions from my end:-

# The most irritating thing about this forum is the width of the pages.. Even they are worse that those ads.. If you increase the width of the pages then it will be of great help as we will be able to read through thread comfortably..

Here is the present Thinkdigit Pages:-
*www.imgx.org/pthumbs/small/21775/Present.jpg

Just imagine this page in this view(sorry for bad quality):-
*www.imgx.org/pthumbs/small/21776/After.jpg

Don't you think its rendering both the purposes, we can see ur Ads at the left hand side and at the same time enjoy the width of the page?:)

# Please disable "Show Post Count" thing and implement "Rep" system. This will greatly help to reduce those junk and useless post(Members who just post for the sake of increasing their post counts) and at the same time a Member's seniority can be noted using his/her Rep Value.. :)

# Please add Internet sub-section in that Caught in WWW section.. Members can discuss about browers,websites and other internet related thing in that sub-section.. :)

# Do change your avatar from "Raaabo was Here" to "Raaabo IS Here" :-D Just Kidding..

yes I am buddy. Make a bot to do this instead of making a bot for posting news.

And about smiley, I know that, that is the day it works. But we use : - D rarely. but many members use 8 ) regularly. So, they should change the characters for that smiley.

@azzau, Post counts are making some users to post some irrelevant/useless data occasionally. So, Frequently I think about being on a rep system. But I think it's not fare. Coz.. it don't make any sense. (I mean, won't you listen to the person who has 1 rep power???). But this is just my idea. I know that many members will be against this one.

First, please restore our forum width. Ads are fine with me, but annoying ads are not. Please remove the BenQ rollover ad. A simple banner is as noticeable. This is almost like NVIDIAGeek increasing post font size to grab people's attention, except that it is much worse. Seems like a cheap gimmick, nothing more.

If not, PLEASE, no ads on the sides and in between posts. cyberjunkie is a member at TE and the ads are much better managed there. It will do us no harm to take a leaf or two out of their book. One last compromise maybe something like keep the forum as is in terms of ads for those not logged in. Once we log in, keep ads only above the first post and user CP, etc buttons and also below the quick reply box. I come to this forum for reading and once logged in, I would like ads to be secondary and not in-your-face type.

We need active mods. Please look into this. Also, MORE so, we need active admins.

Please add an image resize feature like at TE. If any image is wider than the forum width as on any monitor, then it is resized to a width which is viewable easily, with a button on top to view it full size.

More suggestions will come up from me later.

---------- Post added at 05:39 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:32 PM ----------

And yeah, I think someone should move the Gaming News Channel thread to the News section under Games sub-forum. Also, my vote is for Kirsch theme.

Thanx raaaboo and cyberjunkie for your effort. Its nice to see everything changed.

1. Please increase the forum width.

2. What is the difference between Software QnA and Solution in Software section??

3. What are the purpose of single sub forums within Hardware QnA and Bazaar under Hardware section??

4. Please look into the image hosting feature, doesn't works well.

5. As said by Krow try to introduce image resizing picture.

6. I've no problems with ad's. I know its necessary. But place them strategically.

7. We need more active mods(The only one I see is Anorion).

8. Look into rules and regulation section. Make it more strict and change whereever necessary.

Raaabo is doing all the work. I'm suggesting a few things here and there. I'll try and answer a few questions..

2. What is the difference between Software QnA and Solution in Software section??

The Solution is like the Discussions subsection under Hardware. It's for discussing about software and not so much about troubleshooting software problems. Those queries belong in the Software Q&A section.

# Please add Internet sub-section in that Caught in WWW section.. Members can discuss about browsers,websites and other internet related thing in that sub-section..

Online Services subsection is for that kind of discussion. Browser discussion can go into Software solution.

3. What are the purpose of single sub forums within Hardware QnA and Bazaar under Hardware section??

I Want... (read only) is for people who are looking for particular hardware to buy but isn't listed in the main section. It's avoid any confusion.

Raaabo's FORUM RULES thread will be updated once we make all of the necessary changes and fixes. It'll have the explanations needed for the sections and subsections.

I'll make more changes tomorrow night, and see what can be done to fix things. I'm still having no luck with the Ajax, but I'll beat it into submission sooner or later. I asked for suggestions for themes (v3.8.4 and V4 compatible). Apart from Kirsch, I didn't see any other suggestions.

Attachments? That doesn't work at all. I think I'm going to have to start from scratch with either v4 or v3.8.4 to get everything working again. Am still trying to understand what caused it to break, so that I'll know how to fix it if it happens again.

5. As said by Krow try to introduce image resizing picture.
once we have a new light theme, with ajax working, sure. Low priority for now.

6. I've no problems with ad's. I know its necessary. But place them strategically.
I'm glad you take that attitude. It's only mature to realise that ADs are going nowhere. We'll try and improve placement, but not now, maybe once everything else works and a theme is chosen

7. We need more active mods(The only one I see is Anorion).
Agreed

8. Look into rules and regulation section. Make it more strict and change whereever necessary.

Regarding Theme:

Why not add some greenery in support for "Green Earth" like this one:

*vbskins.com/forums/?styleid=6

This is one theme that I looks good but am not sure whether it is light or heavy:

*www.completevb.com/demo/index.php?styleid=42

Website width:

TDF on 1440x900 resolution: *img685.imageshack.us/img685/7469/1440900.th.jpg

TDF on 1024x768 resolution:

*img194.imageshack.us/img194/9543/1024768x.th.jpg

Is the forum optimized for low resolution display?

I changed the forum to remove the left vertical bar for the avatar and member details. Now you'll have to scroll more, but you also get more width to read.
Hmm Pretty Good Work! Now apparently there is not much difficulties in reading through threads.. Well Done!But still you can replace that useless space on both side with width(just like i showed u in my screenshots @ previous page..

Apart from Kirsch, I didn't see any other suggestions.
Well this theme suggested by @desibond is good:-
*www.completevb.com/demo/index.php?styleid=42

@desibond
Well, I really didn't liked that Green Earth Theme. Time Traveler theme is way way better..

Hats of to your effort Raabo and CyberJunkie!!! :)

Some Other Requests:-
# Can you update this forum with new set of smileys? Smileys - Click Here ?? It will be great if we have this set of smileys..

# Just like u changed URL color to blue earlier.. keep it black but put an underline format to links. This will solve both the problem.. :)

I still stand for the Kirsch theme. The above suggested skins can be modified I think. All are free skins. So, the flower and dollar and header can be changed AFAIK.

Just read the post count/rep debate. I am for the rep system because it will serve as a measure of useful posts made by the member. Both post count and reps should be there. No negative reps, just positive reps and report post button.

---------- Post added at 04:04 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:02 PM ----------

Forgot to add, is everyone fine with the online/offline status icon? I think it should be changed. What say? It's good and more so, it works, but I think that if we are going to change the theme, then the icon should change too.

Nah I don't like the rep system honestly. Not that I am saying there aren't any perks for it, but there are many people who will take advantage of it. For example:
I HAVE 50 REPUTATION POINTS MORE THAN YOU, WHO ARE YOU TO QUESTION MY ADVICE!!!
With respects, majority of the crowd in India is not that mentally disciplined and unfortunately many people with such colourful characteristics (such as showing off with post counts and worst of all- their degrees :p- most likely falsified on the risk of being proven wrong by another person) show such behaviour in the forums. We could rather have something else in its place.
I would also suggest reinforcing rules on the market section.

By the way how is the idea of uploading 4 or 5 best(thorugh vote by members/choosed by you) themes?? In this way we can choose from those 5 themes anytimes and will not get bored of any particular theme??

I mean look at the theme preview pages(any one). At the bottom left there is an option for choosing themes. Its not possible to upload all the themes. Thats why I said 4 or 5 themes.

Oh come on! It's an AD! It's supposed to enlarge when you hover over it... if you don't want to see it, don't move your mouse over it. Besides there are so many ways you can stop it permanently for yourself -- for which you will find detailed tutorials in the forum itself.

I can't force the company to return money, and remove this AD just because you're too lazy to do something about it yourself, or don't like Flash Ads. Remember, it's these ads that are paying to keep this forum going in the first place.

Once the agreed number of page views and clicks are done with, that ad will change, on its own.

Actually, the forum is optimized for 1024x768 because over 70% of members run that resolution.
Can we have it to stretch to full width of any resolution? tarey_g's addon does that and according to him it is easy to do if one knows a little of java scripting.
I agree, I hate the rep system too, and when we had it, people were signing up with 4 and 5 accounts to rep themselves, saying "Wow, excellent, thanks, repped you" all from the same IP, within 1 minute!
Point taken. Can we have a spoilers feature so that the movies and games thread posters benefit? As in add a tag and then the said part appears in a quote like box with "Spoiler content. Click to show." This feature is there on the other forum and is needed more here.
Database error occurs when load is too much, we're trying to make it as light as possible on the database.
I doubt if the problem concerns load. I say that the load on this forum is pretty less due to a severe lack of visitors. Max 200 visitors and we see a database error. It may be a problem with the bulky coding. I think this can be sorted out with a fresh install.
When large images are posted, the forum width is affected.
I have already requested for an auto resize feature, which enlarges images when we click a button on top the image.

I'm looking into the attachments... actually I'm trying to start from scratch, with the latest stable version of vb, and adding things to it to see what breaks it.
Thank you for continued and active support. I'm hoping for the best.

Even though I hate the ads, I take your point here. As I have previously requested, please move the side ad to the top or bottom. For one ad, we are losing on forum width for the entire page. One small suggestion: Instead of ads between post, I think it will be better for ads to be after the post and before signature. That way, the blank space will reduce and the forum will look more professional. Do other members agree?

I'm trying to make sure that there will be at least a few themes for members to choose from once all the problems are ironed out.

I think we need new mods too. +1 for the spoilers feature. IMO, the rep system helps in the sense that people think a bit about what they are posting. This really improves the quality of the content in the forum, which is important. The rep system should be set up in a way that multiple accounts cannot rep themselves till they have a certain amount of rep to begin with. Also, disproportionately high reps are irritating and put-off the newcomers in the forum. How about a negative rep system? Dont like a post, give em a few negative reps, and the fellow will stop posting BS.

krow i think its more of a opera bug.i also face this problem in this forum sometimes.but when i log with firefox no problem then.
I use Firefox for Neat Digit Extension and the bug is present with or without the addon.
NOPE! I'm using Firefox and i'm facing that same problem as krow is..
Another suferring soul. Welcome to our club. :cry:
IMO, the rep system helps in the sense that people think a bit about what they are posting. This really improves the quality of the content in the forum, which is important. The rep system should be set up in a way that multiple accounts cannot rep themselves till they have a certain amount of rep to begin with. Also, disproportionately high reps are irritating and put-off the newcomers in the forum. How about a negative rep system? Dont like a post, give em a few negative reps, and the fellow will stop posting BS.
I think that a report post button does pretty much the same thing as a negative rep. Suppose a person with a bad record full of negative reps actually makes a good post, then he will be judged by his rep value and not the content (especially by newbies). Bad posts should be reported and moderators should do the needful (give infractions, miserable, ban, etc.). I am for the positive reps, but this is a system which can be misused a lot. Maybe we make it that you have to spread reps to about 20 people before you can give it to the same person again?
^^no reps please. negate a post and clean up posts with negative rating. Don't assign any -ve or +ve rep to individuals.
It is just like a report post button. Isn't it?

NO NO, please for the love of god no reps, then people will post a lot of useless stuffs and continuously begs you for rep, it turns into an obsession, in one forum I frequently visit some guys were offering rare torrent invites for reps, please no reps [when reading the above posts rep=reputation, not that word that it sounds like :lol:]

Now back to serious stuff, this is getting a bit tiring, as it seems the issue's not with posting as all posts get sent to the server normally but the issue is with the page loading, after a post is written the thread supposed to open but its not, and sometimes database error.

We're working on the latest (non 4.0) version of VB at the moment. VB themselves have asked big board users like us to avoid changing to 4.0 before long term tests are done. So VB 4 will not be implemented in a hurry. We are working on getting the latest version running with all the necessary modifications and without any of the errors. That should happen soon.

We're all a little busy with Feb issue closing, so updates might be a little sparse, but we're working on this in the background. Still haven't been able to find what broke the ajax and attachments. Will let you know as soon as I do...

Ok raaabo here's some more suggestion:
1. I think Team Digit can afford assignig a small team for just this site. Which'll help us a lot. You can also assign from even the readers/members.

2. I know this is a "hatke" request. But could you please one more page?? One of which is completely for pre-assembled rigs. I mean you can divide budgets such as 12k, 20k etc etc and suggest the best rig on that budget. I know there is already a thread in forum but that never get's updated. I mean we get many threads everyday for the same budget and even same purpose asking for suggestion. This would help us to eliminate this and also get instant help, if no one is active.

3. This suggestion is for magazine. First of all thanks a lot lot lot for continuing Price Watch in each issue. But please increase the pages and add more catagories please. And only add VFM products there. The Killer Rig page, I think just does nothing. Rather remove the images and add simple text based configurations. In this way you can give us more budget specific rigs. I mean the basic rig is for 21k and then jumps to 81k and then to 1,51k??? Rather give us text based configurations and divide budgets in this way : 15k, 25k, 30k, 40k, 60-70k etc. And if you can't do this please try to do the same in website. If you even can't add one more page try updating the existing configuration thread every month. I think this would be possible for you.

Hi all, you might start to experience some bugs like double-posts or "You cannot post so soon" errors over the next few days or so. Just wanted to let you know that this is intentional, and I've left Ajax on to re-start the troubleshooting process.

Forum has been upgraded to 3.8.4 PL2, but still the Ajax problems continue. Personally I think it's time for a new database, and a new start. Also trying to fix the width problem with a new theme. Will keep you updated on that as soon as I know something.

^ I think there are cache related issues.

Try posting a post and then Edit it. You won't be able to see the changes reflected. You'll have to do a hard refresh. And if you then go to the Edit page again, you still get the old contents.

Let me see whether it's still there or not.

It's still there.

AJAX is still not working. So, I guess it's the time for a new database and a new start.

Moreover, after the 4.0.1 update, vBulletin 4 is more stable. I guess it fixes over 200 bugs. You might consider it once again.

^ Try Disabling NeatDigit. NeatDigit actually uses JS to change the look of the site, so I think it might be causing problem after seeing your Error box.

Install Stylish and write a style for 'thinkdigit.com' (S icon in the bottom right corner) with following as the contents.

Code:
td[width="164"] {
width: 0 !important;
display: none !important;
}

.forumarea {
width: 100% !important;
}

#contentarea, #footerlink, #footertxt, .footerfixedarea{
display: none !important;
}

#header {
display: none !important;
}

#mainNavPart {
display: none !important;
}

#submenu {
display: none !important;
}

.topAd {
display: none !important;
}

table[align="right"] {
display: none !important;
}

#footer {
display: none !important;
}
It will give you no advertisements + full width. Of course, not the other features which NeatDigit has.

Instead, if you want to use TechEnclave's theme, then check out this thread. :)

I am using version 2.66. Now what..? By the way that error, which I posted I get it on Win7 64bit

Chked it buddy on my Win 7 64 home pc, the error you get is because your home pc does not have 2.66 version of the extension. That error was resolved in th 2.65 version. you can try uninstalling the extension entirely and then installing the new one, instead of update if there is a issue.

hope this helps.

database issue is server side problem. The forum script itself has so many problems.
I think admin need to clean everything from forum.

1) Disable and uninstall all plugins.
2) Use Krish theme with all default files. No modified header or footer.
3) Just replace logo.

Run the forum for 2-3 days. If the forum runs smoothly, admin should modify header, footer and add ads.

Prefer keeping forum clean, light. Prefer using least plugins.

A forum is considered very good if its very user friendly, clean and bug free.
This forum uses world best forum script, vBulletin, but still has lots of problem.

Like many uses says,
1) get database error
2) cannot change avatar
3) Drop down menu is not working.
4) You cannot use BB code in post, if you don't manually enter code.
5) width at many places is mismatch.
6) If you scroll to bottom, full page will be covered only by footer.
7) Normally half page is covered by header part.
8) Icons missing.

etc....

Hi Guys,

Any suggestions for plugins or features for Forum 3.0?

What I'm working on now:
1. Fluid width
2. Better spam protection
3. Smaller header
4. No bugs in code
5. Fixing avatar and attachments

Mods currently used:
1. Miserable users
2. Double-post prevention

Suggestions welcome. Oh, and Forum 3.0 will be VB 3.8.X-based, not 4.0.X-based, still not very sure about the stability and loads of 4.X.

Online Users :- You can access this list by moving to Quick Links > Who's Online

I'm not sure what was meant by Forum Leaders Section. Are we talking about a reputation point based system here?

As for Birthdays I'll inform them of that. Although I must say the proper folks who you should be asking those features for is from Raaabo , Anorion , Cyberjunkie etc. But I will remind them :) .

And Niceboy . Would you please update the thread to include the Approximate Address you are from. The City name or Town Name should Suffice as I see the Bazaar rules states the following.

Rules: Note that this is NOT a Digit sponsored section, and thus we cannot help resolve disputes. Any deals that you strike up are at your own risk. We encourage members to buy stuff only from other members in their own cities, and also request posters to put the city that you are in, into the topic so that, say, a person from Delhi will ignore all posts made by people not from Delhi.

Once added I think I can approve the thread for now unless something else pops up.

@Anorion, thanks very much for your support.

Btw, When I tried posting this ad around 6 months back, it is never approved and somebody banned me for life from this forum!! I mailed the magazine editor directly and requested him to see my ban explaining everything. I did not see any reply, but, when i tried logging in last week, miraculously, i came to know that my account is working again!! my ban is cancelled!

Thanks editor sir.

Actually, I was thinking that baazar section is dominated by a few hosting providers who might be the friends of a few moderators here! Because, I post regularly my hosting offers on WHT, FWS, DP and many other big forms and never faced a ban till now.

Anyway, happy to see that it did not happend again. Thanks every one.

Online Users :- You can access this list by moving to Quick Links > Who's Online
Yes, it can be accessed from there, but it's much much more convenient on the board index itself. Sending PM to someone is made simple.

If 50 people are online, then you have to flip through unnecessary pages in Quick Links > Who's Online whereas all the names were easily available earlier on the board index.

I'm not sure what was meant by Forum Leaders Section. Are we talking about a reputation point based system here?
It lists all the Admins and Moderators. Sending PM is again made simple as you just have to click on the "View Forum Leaders" link which used to appear beside "Mark Forums Read" on the board index.

Gr8. Awesum. There are the words came out after seeing the new Home page. Everything is just too perfect. Thank you for providing us such a wonderful change. Now please look into the forum. Though the theme is boring but it's much lighter than the previous one.

Just one suggestion for forum : Do the same perfection in placing each and everything and make it 100% wide. If it's not possible, I don't care about the ad's in sides. But after the ad's there is lot unused space. What I mean is make the forum 95% wide and use 5% for the side ad's. That will be really ok.

I am hearing that IPB or Invision Power Board has moved ahead of vBulletin.

My suggestions, which have been posted previously:

Sub-forums for Photography, Photoshop, CorelDRAW, Illustrator, etc Designing, basically, an art sub-forum, which can even house our movies thread. All these can be clubbed to be one single sub-forum IMHO.

Please move the sidebar ads to the top or bottom of the page once users login. The featured story link is pretty much useless above the forum. I suggest that it be removed. Prior to logging in, the sidebar ads may be present.

and
tags. These would be for spoilers in the gamerz and movies threads. The Table tags should be able to create an excel like grid/table. Useful for putting comparision.

Please add an image resize feature like at TE. If any image is wider than the forum width as on any monitor, then it is resized to a width which is viewable easily, with a button on top to view it full size.

More suggestions as and when they come to my beak.

Cheers and regards from the Krow Klan.

Come on guys, give us the spoiler tags! It is much need in the game and movie threads. Seriously, I don't think that this is some newbie forum, where we have to keep asking for basic things like to make edit work, to fix the font colour, etc. This is a big forum, where advanced features should be made available.

What's with the sidebar? I can't see any ads there, so why is just one link blocking the entire space? I have a square monitor, so I really don't see much of a difference in the width.

I've put this on the website feedback thread but as I didn't get any reply, I am posting it here. I am sure Raaabo sir will reply and/or do the needful :)

I've put up 3 hardware reviews here so far (880gma ud2h,890gpa-ud3h and 790fxta-ud5...more to come in coming weeks) but the problem is it is restricted to 15 pics per post. I was wondering if you could remove that- at least on the reviews section.

Also there are couple of stickies over there which got nothing to do with review section. I was wondering if they could be replaced with basic guidelines for reviewers- for example no hotlinking and no plagiarism.

Hi

I am so far not received my June 2010 issue of Digit.

When I contacted customer care on Wed 16-Jun-2010, I was given a AWB no 0454742166. Also the customer care has not reverted back as promised to me in my call on 16-Jun-2010.

However when I checked with the courier company the number does not belong to me, it has the name S Iyer, as can be seen from the attached image.

Some months back also I had this problem. I had to follow up regularly for a couple months to get my issues. For some months the issues were on time but again this problem. I am really sick of following with digit for non delivery of issues.

As a result I am considering to cancel the remaining subscription if possible as there does not seem to be an end to you logistics/delivery problems.

Hi folks..:)
for the 4th month in a row i received my issue (the magazine) damaged :sad:
the damage on the March & May issues were tolerable but my April & the current June issue were disastrous. when i opened my June 2010 package i saw the magazine was torn in the front, it was not only the front cover but also a few inside pages as well. the same happened with my April issue with the addition that the back cover was also torn :-x

After i contacted the Customer Care number (02240789612) they took note of my problem & aptly sent me a replacement of the entire package when i had asked only the magazine be replaced..thank you Digit :razz:

i contacted the Customer Care regarding the problem with my June issue on the 9th of this month, they said that a replacement would be sent by as of now i have not yet received my replacement of the June 2010 Anniversary Special..:sad:

Before i started typing this post, i tried calling the Customer Care but there is no answer :?:

i humbly request the respected Editor to kindly consider my plea & look into the matter of packaging & dispatch. i hope the Editor or a concerned authority will make his or her best effort to resolve this unnerving problem of issues getting delivered in damaged conditions.

Honestly, i feel very ashamed to call up every month after i receive my issue, "complaining" about the physical manner/condition it was delivered to me. i understand & am aware that the Digit customer helpline has to deal with innumerable grievances everyday.

i await your responses my friends :smile:

I've a few suggestions :

it would be great if the magazine only can be found in the newsstands without the DVDs as well and it will even give the newsstand buyers a very good flexible choice.

As for Fast Tracks it can be included as a pdf in the DVDs as it will be more environment friendly and will save a lot carbon emission.

The Ft's and the mag can be also sold as a 6/12 months archive on a special edition CDs without the mag.

Hello Sir,

I want to take my point directly here, I am simply not impressed by the DVD's you provide with your mag. Did you saw the iPad review, is this how a video should be done and the review was disappointing also. The DVD's are total worthless.

These are my honest suggestions to improve your DVD's or else stop providing those craps.

And after I brought the iPad I find it difficult to read books, novels and magazine on a hard copy so please bring out a Digit iPad App and sell your mag in subscription basis out there(this is for who don't care for your DVD's) .

I may stop purchasing your mag if some improvement is not evident, I give you 6 month time and I hope you can bring out a Digit iPad App(Then digit can go international).

And if you need more clarification on what I mentioned above you can get back to me, I want a top notch high quality Tech Mag in India, not highest selling. Be like Apple not Microsoft.

Hi Raaabo, can we have a mod/plugin in place which could lock threads which are more than say 1 year old? This will check the unnecessary bumping of old threads by spammers/bots.

Secondly, if these are spambots only (i.e. software programs) then might I suggest putting human verification methods (e.g. captcha) in place for those who have <10 posts

Hi guys

I'm evaluating VB4, will let you know soon when we will shift to it. Also, I've found the site loading to be a lot faster, and I experience very few bugs, but I'll look at logs to see what the problem could be. Thanks for the heads up, I'll spend my Saturdays looking into this.

The first one (this one) is for anything under the sun that you want to talk directly to me about. This could be about anything in the magazine (not just the 1st page), the DVDs, suggestions for general improvement, things you'd like to see, and anything to do with Digit that's not "Issue-based". So if it's feedback about the January issue, that goes in the relevant thread... here you could talk to me about my views on something, why does Digit review a certain way, how do we review, how do we choose stories... suggest some stories that you'd like to read, and ask me anything you'd like to...

The second link is for website related issues... suggestions for improvement of thinkdigit.com, telling us if you liked a particular article, etc. (That's thinkdigit.com, not thinkdigit.com/forum, by the way)...

I hope it's clearer now.

I hope it's clearer now.

regarding this sir, i had contacted you around 3-4 weeks regarding "Digit is Hiring" for the post of freelance writer. After submitting the storyboard, there has been no response yet and i am pinning a lot of hope. please let me know soon.

Hi, welcome to Digit Forum.

I think there is some restriction for posting new thread. Like you must have minimum 10 posts before you can start a new thread.

publish testscore with all the nitty grity details on website

you should publish your test scores of reviews products here online on digit website itself. I know you are doing this with consumermate.com but still they are more laptop centric and does not cover all reviews properly.

Lets take the following example:
lets say you reviews the latest android phones a few months back and i just remember you did a review and dont know what models you reviews side by side, so instead of searching for the lost magazine you should publish the results on the website also with the sibling competitors as a whole, this way we know when the review was done and what was the pros and cons

consumermate.com doesn't show when the product was reviewed, the model could have been upgraded of the review could be obsolete.

also benchmarks scores and not published properly in consumermate.com

Anyways, its your suggestion. I respect it. No fighting.

Here in my city, there arent many people that understand difference between iPod and mp3 player. I say I have a iPod they ask which brand? I say Apple. They go :shock:

The penetration of Apple products(other than ipod is poor)

For security reasons don't post your subscription numbers here, and instead please send an email to robert . smith at 9dot9.in and CC sourabha at 9dot9.in with the complaints. Why can't you let us subscribe for ONLY the FTs and DVDs every month? It will definitely be beneficial for people who cannot afford the complete package. You can even consider adding an extra CD with some exclusive magazine contents, ads, useful links etc. in an interactive form in the long run.

Thanks Raabo for taking our complaints into consideration. My subscription has been expired but if u want I can still email the details, and if you are ready to take some steps against them I wont mind subscribing to magazine again ONLY if i know ur taking some measures to control the delivery. Else u just lost a reader coz I didnt purchased the current edition and no chance I will do that in future through newsstand coz I am quite frustrated by the responses I received from digit care and lousy courier service.

He is not Raabo. Obviously he doesnt work in the Mag :wink: . But he is just clarifying Forum rules as that guy didnt know/read/pay attention to the rules of Bazaar section. Hello Raaabo!
I had a suggestion for an article/monthly section/fast track/forum threads:
DIY to bring back Old/Outdated gadgets we have at our home
For eg. PS2(Eg. for DIY, using it as a DivX player, and playing videos off a USB), Old and prev. gen iPods (Touch, Classic), PSPs , Old phones, Old PCs, Old Cabinets (Modding etc.), Useless DVDs/CDs...

Ive seen some articles like these before, in digit and would LOVE to see more like these. I think its a good idea because not all of us like to throw away/recycle our old gadgets! And selling them is quite impractical cuz after using a product for 2-3 years you don't even get 1/4th the amt. of money you payed for it!
And btw the new Website is looking great! :D

A bit of feedback from my side. Although I could have posted directly on th feedback thread but wanted to post it here.
1) The cover story by Siddharth Parwatay is one the best articles I have read for a long ling time. All the sub headings were very very well explained and written. There was a touch of everything it seems. Hacktivism, attention seekers, etc. Literally just about everything. Ok the map of the world was a bit confusion but yes it was good. Overall just an amazing article.

2) I think it's time you make major changes on how reviews are written. Atleast cell phone reviews that feature so many featured packed phones need change.
Rather than only grouping the phones only in budget. I think they should have a bit it space only for themselves.
Take for example the iPhone 4s. It was awarded the Editors pick. Not that I have any complaints with it I'd like to say that the ammount written about the phone was very less. I will be quoting you guys how you wrote- *
Everyone thought it would be the iPhone 5. And what emerged was the iPhone 4s. And it definitely wasn't the completely new iPhone people were expecting.*
The processor however with the Apple *A5 dual core clocking at 1 GHz. Minimum storage available is 16 gb as opposed to 8 gb earlier. The camera has been bumped to 8 mp with 1080p HD video recording capability. While the 4s arrived in India not long after the global launch, what went against it was the price.
Printed in page- 101. February 2012.*

A very good introductory part. But as you guys had conducted a review there was JUST NOTHING on how the actual performance of the phone is. On how iOS works better or worse. This phone was launched with a lot of noise with it and most readers would be quite eager to read about it irrespective of whether you had already reviewed it earlier or not.*
So I think each phone should have it's own space in the form of a paragraph below it's name which should be *subheadings.*
Please don't take me wrong with this. But as a loyal reader felt I had to directly say it to you.*

Then again on the last paragraph it was written*
Also the improved camera optics and improvements in iOS 5 worked in favor of iPhone 4s which was awarded the Editors pick
again nothing much written about it. *

How about printing photos taken from the test phones? Since too much printing will make costs higher you can print only the photo of test scene from the best of camera performers and another from the more average or lower performance.*

3) Thanks a lot for the videos of CES Vegas. Absolutely lived them. I think vids of event that team digit can't visit personally but are significant should also be included. *

4) also liked the devworx section a lot. The buyers guide regarding Smart TV was also nice.*

5) FT to Networking was again very good. I think it has helped many people and solved many queries.*

I think I hav given enough feedback for now. Wanted to post a response for the letter of the month but will do it at a later time :)

Yes we did articles like that before. We can look into a refresher again in a DIY section. Might be a laugh to do as well :)

2) I think it's time you make major changes on how reviews are written.

The rest of your post should have been in the feedback section for the month, as it pertained specifically to that month. Thank you for the feedback though.

As for reviews, yes, we're going to try and publish more indepth individual reviews. The problem is space in magazines are expensive. We will try and make up for it by putting video reviews of a few products in the DVD, and perhaps 1 or 2 more pages for really good products. Personally, the 4S was a little disappointing, and deserved no more space than it got :)

We are planning more DIY articles, yes. However, about blender, I don't know. I think the forum would be a better place for people to start such DIYs. For the magazine and Fast Track, we always have to try and look at our entire readership, and what they'd like. We do some niche stories and FTs from time to time, but something tells me Blender DIYs would be a little too niche.

Other members feel free to vote and shout me into submission if I'm wrong. If a majority of people here want it, I'm willing to change my mind.

:cry::cry: sorry raaabo sir, but digit has never let personal views affect any review of a gadget.. that's why i read digit, for unbiased content. But what was written in the mad about the 4s was only 7 lines and that too mentioned that it is disappointment. it should deserve at least half a page if possible or even seven lines are enough if you provide the good and bad about it but all that was written was that it is a disappointment over the iPhone 4. that's my view on it..:|

hi Raaabo

would like to give some feed back--->

there are rarely any content for MAC users...n so is the case with the dvd content...
and there is absolutely no content for windows x64 users
do include them also!
rest...the dvd contents are not very useful
the game demos and full free games are worthless..plus most of the dvd's space is covered with huge video file's size...please improve these contents!
For the Fast Tracks it looks like a reflection of wikipedia!
seems digit is out of Tech-writers?
sheer disappointment at times :(
they ain't seem to get interesting while reading em..
secondly,
have seen DVD's quoting a boastful title stating "so and so" GiGs of video and games...please do not quantify it in terms of file size...and please please provide stuffs for 64 bit systems...
btw
i use MAC PRO (12 core processor) can you please publish articles pertaining to how can i make the most out of it?i basically use it for video editing and supermassive gaming using bootcamp!
am a subscriber since last couple of years,
and never came up with any such article :(
it would sound professional if digit's article resonate with upcoming technologies and tech trends...
have read MIT's technology review...why cant digit produce such intricating yet lucid interesting articles?
hope it reflects in future issues!
btw
must say, i really like the way digit is campaigning for the app-developers and appreciating them..you ppl motivating and driving them in a good sense :)
"super-like" for that :)
keep up the good work

3)And also videos of different PC related stuff like assembling a PC,or overclocking or similar videos DIY videos like u used to show on digit TV.

Its a thing that i noticed, when i read DIGIT magazine.
Shortened URLS are really a good alternative for long hyperlinks. It reduces space and also easy to accessible.

But, sometimes i confused with the hyperlinks that has O(capital O) or 0 (Zero) in the shortened urls for the digit articles.
Since shortened urls are case-specific, the result is - PAGE NOT FOUND.
I've to experiment with O's and 0's to actually get the desired topic.

My suggestion is to use some different font or different zero (slashed/dotted) that can differentiate between Capital O's and 0's.

Anyone had the same problem or its just me?

^^ I think that's a fair complaint.

Also, I wanted to prebook October 2012 edition. But the text in red don't let me do that. I am worried.

*i.imgur.com/9dmzL.jpg

I tried Opera, Firefox and Chromium. Getting this message across each one of them. Can it be resolved by tomorrow?

Update: Ok. So despite my apprehension, I went through with the pre order on Firefox. And transaction went smoothly.

I would just like to point out here to the person concerned, that despite the fact that I was billed Rs 169 (the offer price for Oct 2012 edition), I got a confirmation mail that I was billed Rs 150. And that was repeated in the mail from thinkdigit.com too.
Not a big deal, but a point worth looking into.

For the simple reason of the lack of a feedback thread for December 2012 issue I'm forced to post here. To begin with I'm hugely disappointed this month. I found the magazine fundamentally lacking (sorry to say that although I am a huge fan)
Here are a few things I complain of-

1. In page 116, you guys in quite a normal tone asked us to p*** on Steve Jobs grave if our "heart so desires"
IMO such immature troll comic type language is not unacceptable from a magazine of your stature. Just because he created Apple which doesn't do things that always pleases the geek world doesn't mean you will ask people to do such things. A guy who has done so much for the tech world gets disrespected like this by the most read Technology magazine in India? It's unacceptable
No I'm not a fanboy.

2. Some really bad glaring errors like, in pg.90 in the Encyclopedia Technica you guys wrote Eric Schmidt was born on 27 April 1995.

3. Also the cover story felt like reading a comic of some sorts. In the story "9 ways earth could reach doomsday" was there really the need of things like "Zombie Apocalypse"?
Also things like Polar ice dissipation don't happen overnight.

4. Game reviews by your magazine look like a joke. Seriously, the Hitman Absolution review was too short and lacked IMO.
It was a 400 word article(I counted) and hardly spoke how the game actually is. The article gave only a brief idea. I could find no info about the storyline and only one sentence about the sentence was written. No mention of recoil, etc

The Assassins Creed III review and Halo 4 reviews felt somewhat better. They atleast touched in brief about various aspects of the game.

5. Also I find you guys biased against Apple. Something being Apple means it's overpriced and substandard. Why so much criticism against Apple entering the smaller sized tablet category? Steve Jobs might have said 7 inch is too small but market scenarios do change over time (it's 2 years since he said it in 2010)
Merely saying "We gave iPad the best tablet Zero-1 award" is NOT a good enough clarification against the prejudice you have developed against them.

I hope I haven't hurt anyone's sentiments with this post. I am a big fan and a well wisher of your magazine. Shall always remain one :)

^^ Agreed. I didn't renew my digit subscription when it ended a few months back. The only reason I bought the December's edition was because it was a collector's one and I wanted the encyclopedia technica. While the FT was decent I have to say I was disappointed by the content of the magazine. Things as fictional as zombie attacks should be kept as side stories, not a major part of cover stories. I prefer more quality, TECHNOLOGY "articles".

Hi Raabo,

I've been a Digit reader for over 6 years now and this is the first time I'm writing with feedback to you since this issue is likely to force me to not renew my subscription.

I've seen numerous typos in Digit in the last 2-3 months - seems like nobody cares to read the articles before sending it out to publishing. In Dec issue, I thought it was a one-off bad month but this has continued to happen in Jan edition as well. Feb edition was worst of all.

I can't imagine so many typos in a college magazine let alone one that is sold in market and claims to be no.1 magazine of India.

Apart from these typos, there were 10-15 pages missing in my Dec copy and one DVD was missing as well (there were 2 copies of Extraa DVD and third one was Alpha). I did not bother to write to helpdesk since those pages did not excite me much (Zero 1 awards). I thought I can excuse you guys this one time but 2 months down the line, I'm pissed big time due to other issue.

Request you to check why such errors get through to printing and address the issue.

Excuse me for being rude but I certainly will stop my subscription if one more half-baked edition comes through to me. I'll never complain of bad articles since such opinions will vary from person to person but typos are such a turn-off. Send me my copy a month late but do quality check at your end please. Hope you understand my concern.

If I'm able to find some time, I'll retrace and pinpoint these typos. However, I'm sure you would already be aware of the issue.

Thanks.

Edit: have put this on suggestion box thread as well.
A
Feb 27, 2013 at 10:18 PM
Here goes the list that I was able to retrace in half an hour.

Jan issue
Page 6: help!!! "regarding out service"
Page 116: Flickr or Flicr
Page 126: you are choose to play as any character
Page 126: While playing the alone isn't necessary

Feb issue
Page 12: We even sae new Android and PC
Page 28: Dark Arisen release date bit
Page 98: Check "Airtel's free facebook" story

There are many more like these and it reflects very badly on Digit. Please get this issue resolved at the earliest and get back to the quality way you guys have been for so many years.

Since a lot of my time goes in replying to email, which still seems the most popular way for readers to communicate with us, I am rarely on here. also for some reason though I'm subscribed to this thread, I get no email updates from it!

However, I still want to address some of the problems.

I hope the typoes have been reduced to almost nothing now.

ADs are always going to be there, sadly. Nothing I can do about that, but special issues have more content pages, and we try and maintain the ad:edit ratio.

For those getting missing pages, or two of the same DVDs in a pack, please make sure to write to help@thinkdigit.com and get a replacement. We will send it to you free of charge.

thetechfreak: I hope the interactive SKOAR! has done away with the small word count for game reviews problem.

I have never sent an email to the editor, in my whole experience with digit over the last 7-8 years. (Bought every issue from stands). Partly because I never needed to, and partly because of the procrastination. But seriously digit have never given me a chance to say anything. It's constant endeavor to improve have always kept the quality on track.

So I would not miss a chance to write a few words today, particularly since I have received the September issue today. (alas it missed my b'day by a day :p).

Since a lot of my time goes in replying to email, which still seems the most popular way for readers to communicate with us, I am rarely on here. also for some reason though I'm subscribed to this thread, I get no email updates from it!

At the risk of sounding dumb (giving suggestion to the one who 'know it'all), I would like to suggest to try to re-subscribe to this thread. From thread tools above, click Unsubscribe. Then when the thread open again, click, subscribe and select the frequency of notification you want.

I hope the typoes have been reduced to almost nothing now.
I never had problems with typos, as long as those are not in the figures. Like in prices. But from a magazine which have 'digit' in its title, I think a typo in digits would be a hard thing to pull off anyway.

ADs are always going to be there, sadly. Nothing I can do about that, but special issues have more content pages, and we try and maintain the ad:edit ratio.

I have no problem with the ads. You can even put more in it. But, IIF you can shift ads from right side pages to the left sides. You know... since it would help. (How? I would leave it to reader's discretion. Hint: Reading experience.)

For those getting missing pages, or two of the same DVDs in a pack, please make sure to write to help@thinkdigit.com and get a replacement. We will send it to you free of charge.

With the bull**** MTNL grievance center (do they even have one?), I am living with no "broadband" for 4 days now. So, the DVD's would occupy me for a few days, exploring Visual Studio 2013, playing 12 free games and the interactive Skoar edition!

A few notes on the magazine itself:
I wish I had this fast track on PC Hardware before I upgraded to Core i5-4570 last week. [And I would like to take this chance to boast about my upgrade since 7 years from a Pen 4 system (later AMD E350n for few months). So I have accompanied i5 with MSI H87M G43, and a 1 TB WD HDD. I would soon like to give my new born PC a fresh makeover by installing an SSD, right after I increase the graphics capability by adding a dGPU. :D]

I have noticed more editor type articles in the mag. Seems a good read. Regular articles cover wide range of topics from Android to PC and everything in between. Tips and Tricks section is as always informative. Zoop app is nothing more than a QR code scanner. (far from Augmented Reality, that excited me). And, MFD comparison could have a little budget models. Like in the range 3-7k.

So, that's it for my quick review on a short look of the Sep edition. :)

PS: We hope, digit follows the "Don't be evil" motto, since the Chip magazine declared to shut down. :|

Hey vyom,

We weren't evil before and won't be now, though we might come across as evil to some companies from time to time, but only with truth and fact based articles.

Apparently the subject line was marked as spam for me :( so figured that one out. Anyway I use tapatalk now from an iPad, so it's a little easier to keep track, but I must find my keyboard quick. All these long posts I'm making on the darn touchscreen are getting irritating fast!

Ads will usually be on the right. It's a mentality I have tried to change with advertisers and failed miserably. They demand an RHS, and in fact all want ads in the beginning pages only. I'm fed up of trying to tell people that context is better, for example, you're selling a stupid laptop in your ad, allow me to put it in the laptops section, or in the bazaar section, where it will be more relevant, instead of in the first few pages within the news section, but no, who can explain that to an ad agency, who want to go running to their account and say "See, we got your ad to appear in the first 20 pages!"

It's also why most readers think the magazine is full of ads, because for the first 40 pages you see content-ad-content-ad... being repeated. This gives the impression that "half the mag is ads" where as we maintain a minimum 4:1 and more often 5:1 edit:ad ratio, sadly, by the time you reach page 50 you don't realise all the ads have dried up now, because you're too pissed at the 20 ads in the first 45 pages. I give up on that aspect, so I hope you guys can live with it.

I dont have digit authority, but from my experience, the same software you are talking about are the necessary ones which don't take much space and which are way too essentials, to not include them.Besides, not every person buy every issue.
