Today i noticed a new feature in gmail - you can configure gmail to receive mails sent to your other email accounts straight to your gmail account.

Also the mails sent from gmail can be configured as it is sent from your other email accounts.

This is a very good one as i started to loose patience viewing all my three email accounts regularly. And also i like gmail over others.I am starting to hate Yahoo's big ads and the interface(both new and old).

I dont think they will have to allow access.Since gmail asks us the passwords for the accounts,i think gmail will query them as a normal browser would and then send the contents to gmail account.(I am not sure)

pop3 access. I am not sure if yahoo and rediffmail free accounts allow pop3 access. You can only use this facility for pop3 accounts.
It is useful for me. I have 3 accounts on my organization's domain. Our IT Administrators don't know how to forward mail from an account to another. So i set up google to periodically pick up the mails from the accounts and to forward it to blackberry. It is cool!

Yup. Yahoo Mail Plus!

And also, this Gmail feature was out quite a while ago - early December or somewhere around there.

This is not a new feature. This has been around since gmail started.

It works in this way...
Register other ID in gmail. It may be yahoo or any email account. Gmail sends a verification mail to that account. Log-in to that account and confirm. Now all your mails gets forwarded directly to the gmail account automatically.
In the same way you can also configure other email ID in gmail, so that you can send mail from gmail using that ID! Awesome feature.

Eg: abcd@yahoo.co.in registered in gmail. Now log-in to gmail and send mails to friends as abcd@yahoo.co.in

I think you mixed two different features into one. When you register and verify another ID in gmail, you can send mails using that ID to others, but not recieve mails from that ID.

To recieve mails from another ID, that ID needs to Support POP3 access and then gmail can retireve those mails to your inbox and display them in Gmail.

Oops! Yes. I got mixed up. Actually inorder to get SMTP server mails to gmail inbox automatically, one needs to use "Automatic Forward feature" of that client. I have configured my yahoo ID to autoforward mails directly to gmail account. The one which I explained above is for forwarding mail frm gmail using other mail client.

Yahoo Mail plus ? I have just the free account and i am able to do these things.

Perhaps this is the new feature added

But i havent configured it properly( just laziness) and i dont receive the mail properly.may be its because mail plus ! is needed or i did some wrong configurations.

All Yahoo Mail users of country specefic sites like co.in get Free Pop Access and Mail Forwarding. Sadly, users with .com IDs do not get these features for free, they need to Subscribe to Yahoo Mail plus by paying money.

yeah, aryayush agreed. But in my office we connect to the office through a proxy and no pop3 access outside the network is allowed. Gmail allows me to bypass this limitation.

EDIT:
There used to be this Autoforwarding and free POP3 access in yahoo mail a while back available for Yahoo! delivers subscribers which I used to forward my email from yahoo to gmail.
Sadly, new yahoo ids don't get this feature and thus no POP3 and forwarding.
This feature supports web based email clients which have POP3. So, new free Yahoo ids are of no use, albeit I am using my old id successfully via either yahoo's autoforwarding or GMails POP3 fetcher (both are different services).

Access other e-mail accounts through Gmail!!

Heard of this new cool feature in Gmail where you can access your other e-mail accounts (yahoo, hotmail etc.) if they support POP3 ??

I got this feature today, right now this feature is enabled for some of the users. Oh man, this means more gmail users, tough competition for the others, I think someday e-mail will be actually called G-mail :p

Re: Access other e-mail accounts through Gmail!!

Just check your settings and click on accounts tab, if you have a field named "Get mail from other accounts" then its available to you, else you have to wait for some more days, Google is still working on it.

I pity hotmail :D

Re: Access other e-mail accounts through Gmail!!

People, this is no new Gmail feature. This feature has been there for months.
This feature is also available in Yahoo Mail.
----------------------------

If you people have Yahoo India email id, then you can enable free Pop3 Access for yahoo mail and access it thru Gmail.
Just go to option, and there you will find Pop3 and Forwarding.
Enable Pop3 thru that option.
---------------

BTW, luckypayal has a post count of 0 even after this post, lol!!

this is what I got on my new features link in google. I dont think it is an old feature. But note that they say something about limited users.

What's new on Gmail?

Just launched!

Get mail from other accounts
Now Gmail can check for the mail you receive at your other email accounts. You can retrieve your mail (new and old) from up to five other email accounts and have them all in Gmail. Then you can even create a customized 'From:' address, which lets you send messages from Gmail, but have them look like they were sent from another one of your email accounts. Please note that you can only retrieve mail from accounts that have POP3 access enabled. Learn more

This feature is currently only enabled for a limited number of users. We're working on making it more available soon. Look for it in the 'Accounts' tab in Settings.

Read this and I am sure that most of you would leave GMAil like me and this news is directly from google-
Am I receiving someone else's email?

Gmail doesn't recognize dots (.) as characters within a username. This way, you can add and remove dots to your username for desired address variations. messages sent to your.username@gmail.com and y.o.u.r.u.s.e.r.n.a.m.e@gmail.com are delivered to the same inbox, since the characters in the username are the same. Keep in mind that hyphens (-) and underscores (_) can't be used in a Gmail address. Also, usernames are case insensitive, so it doesn't matter if you enter upper case or lower case letters.
If you created your account with a dot in your username and you wish you hadn't, you can change your 'Reply-to address.' To change your reply-to address:
  1. Click 'Settings' at the top of any Gmail page.
  2. Enter your username@gmail.com without a dot in the 'Reply-to address' field.
  3. Click 'Save Changes.'
When you log in to Gmail, you need to enter any dots that were originally defined as part of your username. Note: Google Apps for Your Domain does recognize dots. If you'd like to receive mail with a dot (.) in your username, please ask your domain administrator to add the desired username as a nickname in your user account.

I wonder if post count represents social status..I always find it disgusting when users try to increase their count by posting stuff like "Thank u"."nice stuff" and so on..I m nt saying that its wrong to do,bt one shud only do it when the intention behind is noble and u really mean it...across numerous forums I hv seen ppl writing all these lines just to have a better count..A total wastage of memory space..
