Hey.

I have after much debate with myself, decided to choose an iPod as my next mp3 player. But i can't decide which one. My choices are the new iPod nano
[8 gig] or an old iPod video 5.5g [30 gig]. Don't get me wrong,I like the new nano, but considering the fact that in the black market the older 30GB 5.5G is available for around the same price or maybe a little more, I am really confused.

Advantages of 5.5G:

  • 4 times the space
  • 25% bigger screen
  • Bigger click wheel
  • UI is faster
  • Supports rockbox.

Advantages of 3G Nano:

  1. Small and thin
  2. Front is not as scratch prone as 5.5G
  3. Better battery life.

There you have it. I really don't care much for cover flow or the prettier UI. I actually prefer the old one coz it's faster and more text is accomadated in one screen, and I don't have to bother about getting every damn album's cover art.

And if I do get a 5.5G one, it will be white. So i don't think scratches are too much of a problem there..... at least on the front, and i guess i'll just get some kind of a screen guard for th back and the screen.

Please suggest which one. Or even better, suggest an alternative. I have already considered the zen [buttons are cheap] zen vison w [way too bulky] and zen vision [too bulky].

its up to u..for better sound quality u can opt for zune or the creative..but if u want falunt value go fr the ipod..do u really need 30 gb of space??..

i think the nano should do just as well...and its on a newer build and software...

Zune is too expensive [the new one] in India and it has a smaller screen :( .

I couldn't care less about flaunt value. No, i don't need 30 gigs of space, but it would be nice to have some of it to backup some of my stuff and have a little extra for a couple of movies. But i do need the bigger click wheel, bigger screen and faster UI.

either buy a 6G or the 3rd gen nano ;)

6G is at the same cost as that of 5.5G and is big on space; apple no longer makes/supplies 5.5G what u will get now are the not sold

Are you saying the 80 gig classic comes at the same cost as a 8gig nano?

What kind of logic is that? 10 times the space + bigger screen for same cost?

no what i meant is that the 80gig classic is a 5.5g replacement product and comes at the cost at which the 5.5G was sold

where did i say that the classic comes at the cost of an 8gig nano :?

buy a creative zen if you will be on the move often or else an ipod classic

cos zen and nano has flash drives so they are more reliable when running moving frequently etc (like in a gym)... but if u want more space and can be a bit more soft on the usage of your player go for the HDD ones...

I strongly recommend creative zen instead of nano :D

p.s. @ ring_wraith: Zune 2's screen is larger than ipod classic

You have to ask these questions to yourself:
1. How much video do you intend to watch on it, if at all?
2. What is the size of your media collection?
3. Will there be any jerks and shocks involved, i.e. do you intend to use it while you're running, playing outdoor sports, etc.?

dude watever u do dont go for the 5.5G or the 5G ... 6G is current go for it .... or go for the nano ... the nano in my opinion is better if u travel a lot in trains/buses etc ... go for the 6G if u want to double it as ur portable hard disk

sam9s thanks a lot for the detailed answer. But I have to disagree with you on the sound quality thing. The sound quality is :

iriver>cowon=zen>iPod

Is the iRiver clix 2G available in India? If it is a I am already sold. I absolutely love that thing.

I've a Zune and an i-pod classic and have also used nano and in my opinion, Sound Quality of Zune is simply awesome and the i-pod feels quite offshade when compared with it. Igot the i-pod just for its sleekness and looks or else even watching videos was very comfortable on Zune although i-pod has got a sharper screen due to its smaller size (Same resolution)

Jan 21, 2008 at 5:32 PM
Okay, heres what i mean.

Using the same earphone , not the bundled ones, the order of sound quality is :

iriver>cowon=zen=zune>iPod

every review I have read on the iPod says that it's audio quality is decent and definetly not best of the best. Whereas every iRiver review I have read says it's the best on the market....

I repect your perception, but for me iPod with sennheiser becomes far ahead then any MP3 player. If you appriciate iRiver I dont know how iPod does not sound good to you. There was a marginal difference between the two (AFA the sound quality goes.). Zen I would not even put in to any competition, it was bad, bad for me...........Zune was the next best.......so with sennheiser earphones.......its iPod>iriver=Zune

are you sure? I have read several reviews, everyone including cnet say it sounds fantastic.
aryayush
aryayush #28
Jan 21, 2008 at 7:55 PM
Apart from a few websites well known for their hatred for all things Apple, I have never read a review which said that the iPod's sound quality was average. Almost unequivocally, every reviewer has termed it as having excellent sound quality.

I haven't, however, ever used any music player, neither am I an audiophile, so I can't comment on it myself. :)

What I can comment on is the user interface. Nothing beats the user interface of the iPod.

reviews can only give you an idea, plus when any subjective decission has to be made like (better sound, better visuals) one should just trust their own eyes/ears, coz same sound/visual quality could be different for different people. I' suggest get the sennheiser earphones, plug it in nano, iriver, zune and zen, play the same song (if possible with the same bitrate) then compare and then comment.......
Though you are correct, there are two things you are overlooking:
1. Not everyone can, or wants to, afford Sennheiser earphones; and
2. When a person is out to buy an MP3 player, it is not generally possible to use each one with your own earphones first and compare them before buying one. So you kinda have to base your decision on those reviews. :)

thats why I recomended iPod Video 5.5 G 30 GB. You get much more screen and space in it, you don't need to worry about the memory going kaput after a few hundred thousand write cycles, and you can make partitions in it, use it as a portable hard disc, as well as play games in it. Some people don't have huge libraries. Mine, for example, only amounts to about 680MB. And some people want a tiny player that they can carry around everywhere they want and which can handle some abuse.

Well, such people are not generally musicphiles. For you guys iPod Shuffle is enough. Or the T-Sonic 610. Or the Zen Stone. But not all are like you. There are some who have bought the 160 GB iPod only because they actually keep rips of every movie they own in it. There is nothing better than watching a movie in a crowded bus .

My Music/Video collection is over 200 GB, but its a different issue that my HDD is only 80 GB and I have a T Sonic 610. Most of my stuff is in DVDs.
Plus, believe me, no one wants to run Rockbox or iPod Linux or whatever. :p
thats what you think. Non Apple fans who buy iPods due to informed desicions always install RockBox. perhaps linux is less used. Even those guys who don't have rockbox are influenced into installing it by their peers who show off customisable user interfaces, games, extra formats, etc in the iPod. But apple fans who beleive Apple gives the best they ever need stick with the default firmware.

1. ipoldlinux and rockbox both suck in interface and they do that terribly (sucking i mean)

2. the decision of a smaller sized player or bigger capacity is basically on 1s need and cant be based on what some 1 else says -

the factors that make these decisions are:

a. cost
b. whether u travel a lot
c. whether u have a huge music/video library
d. whether u want a portable hdd

now see what fits the bill and go for it; the brand is again a question of personal choice; when it comes to features and value for money iPods are the last thing to look at (the only vfm they have is the "cool" quotient-the chicks totally dig an iPod)

for features there is a huge range of products out of which creative & sony are amongst the top

PSP audio quality better than iPod!!!........ehmm.....No comments....

That is my personal opinion, and on the forums. you are expected to respect everyones :)

Anyway, the PSP does have better audio quality than the iPod, most people fail to realise it because it is rather low on volume. Also, sadly most people equate audio quality to how thumping the Bass is and how loud something can get. They must learn that audio quality is all about how true to the original sound something is !

Yes video in PSP is miles miles ahead of any PMP and yes you cant sort by artist or album, but you can create playlists. On the other hand in iPod you cant create folders, you can only create playlists, for me that was irritating. Plus you have a li-ion battery that isnt so easy to replace. Cant charge via normal charger (the original one by apple costs 3500!!! and the chinses one would not necessarily work.) You have to delibrately use that stupid itunes to share music, not to forget the pathatic battry life while playing video and.....blah..blah.. blah....what I mean is there are both aspects in every hardware. Apart from all this I still use only iPod for music simply because of it shear music quality. PSP on the other hand has a decent audio quality and LOADS N LOADS of features, if I start listing things you can do with a PSP you would be amazed (thanks to the god of hackers who have ripped apart the PSP hardware/software to make it a truly verstile PMP).....

I said OTG playlists, which you cannot create on a PSP, which happens to be a feature I find essential.

Also, you say you can sort by artist and album.... let's say you want to listen to a audioslave song but don;t know which album it is in, and the only way to look at all the audioslave songs at once would be to have all your audioslave songs in one folder, then you can't have an album listing for audislave coz you would need separate folders for those. That IMO sucks.

And i do own a psp, so no point trying to tell me that you can. And yes i have hacked it and i have looked and looked for brew that will give me better music organisation features but haven't been successful.... I completely agree that the PSP is indeed a multi-faceted device that has given me hours and hours of modding fun.... but this discussion is purely about music.

btw, its spelled "sheer". ;)

sam9s the iPod Classic does have good battery life. CNET managed 45 hours of audio playback and nearly 9 hours of video playback on the 80gb model under realistic conditions.

Sam9s... I was actually thinking of seeing how much a zen 8 gb can be had for..... If it close to 8-9k, i will totally go for that.

and about the "shear" thing, that was a general clarification. Most people don't know the difference between sheer and shear. No hard feelings.

The battery life is improved in the newer version of iPod. Plus it also depends on the screen brightness, format/resolution/fps of the video played back. Most online figures are with default brightness. You must have set your brightness on max level.

Well, very major update..... kinda reckless, but :

I BOUGHT THE ZEN!! woot!!!!!

I got it for an incredible 7.5k for the 8gig version at gandhi bazaar. I can't say anything yet about audio quality as i've just returned and have to chrg it fot 4 hours.

First impressions : I was kinda worried that the buttons would be as cheap as everyone said they were, but they are great, and really easy to use. The screen is gorgeous. The front smudges easily but scratches are not to be found and it doesn't look like it will scratch anytime soon.

Will post an update regding sound quality 2moro and expect a full review soon.

Glad I am not one of the 10-kajillion other iPod users!

Well actually the iPod does come with a brightness adjustment. I've read about it on CNET review. I've even read that when the 5.5G iPod came which had a brighter display, its brightness at default level was equal to the brightness of the 5G at max level. The videos do affect the battery life. High resolution/bitrate files require more processing power and hence consume more battery.

ring_wraith congrats! I don't believe it that you got the 8gb version for only 7.5k. How much was the 4gb version?

Neither did I!

yahi to hai gandhi bazaar ka kamaal!

The 4gig version was not available in any of the shops I checked, but i'm guessing you can easily get it for around 6k.

people are actually confused about what rap actually is its not supposed to be main stream music it is as the name is Rhythm and Poetry not music ;) it has a huge acceptance because of its hardcore/rebellious/gangster image and there by sells more than norah joans

<offtopic>Raps are nice but only the ones by Eminem. I don't listen to the others. Eminem's rapping rules! Some of the pop is nice too. But I wonder what everybody's idea of real music is. Isn't it simple, different people, different tastes. Not everybody likes the same genres.<offtopic>

you are totally out of your mind, do you own an video iPod, I guess not otherwise you would'nt have said that. There is no brightness under setting , there is just backlight Timer and I dont need your expertise comment to know my iPod (maybe in the 80GB version or nano but no in the 30GB one). And there is no question if getting ripped, bought stright from Apple.

Here check this out, the third image shows setting with backlight timer.......and I would suggest to refrain your self from passing the judgement without knowing whom you are dealing with........I hope I made myself clear.......
ok im trying not to be rude to u but u need to know what ur talking and u need to know whom ur talking to ;)

Is Creative Zen available in India? Will we also get the lateste generation of iPod in India? Why is iPod so expensive here in India as compare to US? Is it coz of VAT etc? Most of the stores I checked here at my place have the older generation of iPods!

Hmm, I got the 160 GB 6G iPod classic in like November 2007. Which city are you in?

the default video iPod comes with NO brightness adjustment.
Does too. You bought yours when that firmware update with the brightness control feature wasn't yet released by Apple, which was quite a long time ago. As soon as the feature was released, all iPods started shipping with the latest firmware, so the newer 30GB iPods had the feature by default. :)

You're correct in a certain sense, but it's a "frog in the well" approach. Just because yours didn't ship with the latest firmware and you didn't upgrade to it when it was released does not mean every iPod shipped included the older firmware.

iMav is right; you are wrong.

It's no big deal, guys. It's just that iMav is so seldom correct... :p

I am trying to update that firmware thing
Trying? It's all automated once you click on one single 'Update' button in iTunes. :)
