Hi,

I have a budget of 14K so I decided to go for this mobile,

1. Whats the maximum expandable memory?(Can firmware upgrades or any tweaks or any apps increase the limit?)

2. Does it have WiFi? (If not what will I be losing out on?)

3. Are there any known issues and problems with this mobile?

4. Is there any other better mobile I can get with this budget?(Must have Symbian).

5. Does this mobile have 3D capabilities(Can I play 3D games like NFS etc.).

6. Is the audio quality comparable to Sony Ericsson's Walkman series?

7. How is the Camera's perfomence and
How is the video recording perfomence(Whats the Resolution, FPS, colour depth etc.)

8. And can the firmware be updated easily without any issues?

Lotta questions but please answer them :) .

1)4 gb
2)nopes
3)Tends to go slow if not used properly.Eventually slows down in a few months considerably.
4)SE G700 has touchscreen and costs 15k.Its symbian UIQ.Else N73 is your best bet.
5)Yep.Can play 3d games. In fact all mobiles can.A mobile game is yet to utilize 3d gaming functionalities.
6)Not even close.
7)Camera is quite good.In fact one of the best 3.2 camphones around right after thew SE K8xx series. It records at VGA 15 fps if m not wrong.
8)yes.Firmware updates are not a problem.

^ Thanks.

Are you saying the audio quality is very bad? Because I will be using this mobile mainly to listen to music.

And is this mobile very old or outdated or something :D , and can it be customised easily?

I did not say that the audio quality is bad.I said that the walkmans sound much better. Well its old and itsa still running. Also check out the SE G700.You get the same features in a newer model with touchscreen.Oh.I guess the N81 2gb comes at a decent price. But it has some serious build issues. If you like it.Go get the N81.
Customization is not nokia's cup of tea.Sorry.

1. Whats the maximum expandable memory?(Can firmware upgrades or any tweaks or any apps increase the limit?)

2gb
2. Does it have WiFi? (If not what will I be losing out on?)

No (but it is not required for normal users)

3. Are there any known issues and problems with this mobile?

Install crap and make it slow, it is a fast phone
4. Is there any other better mobile I can get with this budget?(Must have Symbian).

It is having Sybmbian S60 V3 the best symbian and that G700 has UIQ(a little fast)

5. Does this mobile have 3D capabilities(Can I play 3D games like NFS etc.).

Yes you can

6. Is the audio quality comparable to Sony Ericsson's Walkman series?

No, but close enough the sound is loud and if you decrease the sound to 80% it will sound very good if you pair it with ep630 it will rock

7. How is the Camera's perfomence and
How is the video recording perfomence(Whats the Resolution, FPS, colour depth etc.)

i agree with dream (i can't believe he said that :D)

8. And can the firmware be updated easily without any issues?

Yes you can without any problem

and about G700 it will cost you 2k more

AND IT LACKS EDGE

btw if you have more queries you can ask here or if you wanna know anything regarding this phone pm me i have N73 ME too

1. 2GB. No.

2. No.

3. People not used to smartphones usually complain about lack of speed with this phone. If you've used a smartphone before, you won't find that a problem. Keypad is a bit cramped though and joystick is not the best around.

4. Other phones, Yes. Better, Not necessarily. (5700, E51, N81, G700)

5. Yes.

6. Except for bass, it's comparable. Bass is bit lower in N73.

7. Camera is of very good quality. You can check the camera pics thread here in Mobile Monsters (it's a sticky) for an idea as to how good it is. Recorded video is also of good quality. It can record video in CIF (352x288 ) @ 15fps in mp4 format.

8. Yes.

And is this mobile very old or outdated or something :D , and can it be customized easily?
It's old, but not exactly outdated. You can customize it with Symbian apps.

^ I had a look at the G700 and it looks pretty impressive, hows its audio quality?

And how is the quality of the cam?

Is the N73 better than this mobile?
I have a G700 right besides me as I type this and I must say it's a good phone. Audio quality is very good and mostly better than N73.

Camera is decent too however it lacks auto focus, which N73 has.

I'd say G700 is slightly better than N73. But then again, you do pay more for G700, so that's expected.

My advice is, since you'll be using your phone mainly for music, get a N81. It has excellent sound quality, has Symbian S60 OS, wi-fi, and a large display. It'll suit your needs better.

Autofocus is essential only when taking macro pics or in a moving environment.Doesnt pose a huge differnece anyways.the color reproduction as i have seen is brilliant compared to phones in the same budget.
And please krates, try to respect a good pic when you see one. There nothing natural or not natural about the pics. The G700 is miles better.Just look at the sharpness.

N73
1) Good camera with LED flash & AutoFocus
2) Okay music playback
3) Symbian S60
4) It has both UMTS (3G) & EDGE
*img.gsmarena.com/vv/bigpic/nokia-n73.gif

G700
1) Good camera with LED flash but it lacks AutoFocus (Don't know why they excluded it, otherwise it could have kicked the a$$ of N73 real hard)....
2) Nice music playback....+ it also has features like TrackID, MegaBass & SenseMe...
3) Touchscreen
4) It has 3G, but it lacks EDGE.....
5) A whooping 160MB internal memory
*img.gsmarena.com/vv/bigpic/sonyericsson-g700.jpg

C702
1) It isn't a smartphone (It doesn't have Symbian)
2) Good Camera with LED flash & AutoFocus
3) It also has GPS....
4) Nice music playback....+ it also has features like TrackID, MegaBass & SenseMe...
5) It has both 3G, EDGE and even HSDPA.....
6) A whooping 160MB internal memory

G700 comes with a 1gb M2 and can be expanded upto 8gb.

Btw for people who might be considering G700, it is a bit slow. Apps take a lot of time to open. Phone takes ages to start and even after starting it takes a while to come to its senses. Maybe a firmware upgrade will solve this. Not sure though. It comes no where near the speed of my 5700.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

But now I'm really confused  , whether to buy G700 or N73,

1. Since G700 lacks autofocus is this a major setback? and what difference will autofocus make?

2. And G700 has Symbian UIQ, and N73 Symbian S60, which is better?

3. And can G700 be installed with S60 apps and vice-versa?

4. And are there lotts of apps available for the G700?

5. And G700 has 3d capabilities rite?(Play games like NFS etc.).

6. And does C702 have Symbian?

7. And is there any way the G700 is better than the N73.

I would've gone for N81 but it has only 2MP cam.

Please bear with me guys :) .

1) Autofocus is useful when you have to take close up or macro's of certain small objects. If the camera lens is fixed focus, it will blur the image. In this case a camera lens having Autofocus comes to help.

2) IMO you should go with N73 which has s60 v3 as it has lots of softwares. You can extend it capablities by installing a varied types of softwares. While S60 UIQ has a few no of apps compared to S60 V3.

3) No. You can't install G700 apps on N73 and vice-versa.

4) As I said earlier there are apps for S60 UIQ, but they are few when compared with N73 ( S60 V3).

5)Yes, you can play 3D games.

6) No.

G700 got touchscreen.....Better music playback.....The interface is faster than N73....160MB internal memory.

But if you need AutoFocus and can compromise on the other things like Touchscreen-Music playback, get N73 IMO. It is also having more applications than G700's Symbian UIQ.....

But if you don't need Symbian [S60 & UIQ], then C702 just pawns both....Though it lacks a touchscreen.

1) You can flash a normal N73 to Music Edition. The price difference is due to two headsets provided & a 2 GB memory card. The normal has just one headphone & a 1 GB card AFAIK.

2) Sorry, but the list is very long to be listed here. If you want just google it & you will get it.

4) 16 million screen provides a good video & photo viewing experience. 256K isn't bad, but you will notice the difference when you see both 16 million & 256K screens side-by-side.

5) No, you can't upgrade the symbian OS to new release like 9.2 or 9.3... Yuo can't on any phone as they are binded by hardware of the device.

6) Again, not possible.

There is a 2gig mem card included and the headphones comes with an adapter (3.5 mm jack) and it is black in colour (looks great) btw buy the ME version
2. And could someone please provide a list of apps available for Symbian UIQ(G700) and Symbian S60 v3(N73 ME).

well actually no one can but if you want to see a highlight of it go to

[dot]sis.com (without braces) see the uiq zone (g700) there are very less appz and check the Symbian 9.1 zone (N73) see the appz (they are divided in 4 sections)

3. And which Symbian version is better(G700s or N73 MEs)? And what is the difference between them?

S60 V3 no doubt (N73)
4. And both N73 and G700 has 256K colors screen and N81 has 16 million colours screen, so will there be a huge quality difference?

Not at all yours eyes will not be able to judge the difference

5. And N73 ME has Symbian 9.1 rite? Can I remove this and install Symbian 9.2 or 9.3?

NO

6. Can I remove Symbian UIQ from G700 and install a later version of it and can I install Symbian 9.1 or later on the G700?

No

SPEED i think N73 is better after reading the below lines

I mean to say, take example of N73. It has 64 MB RAM, but only 20MB~ is there for the user as the rest is taken to load the Symbian OS.

In the same manner how much RAM is available to use in G700? After the OS is loaded & all.

^^^^dude thats the internal memory. The OS is loaded in the internal memory of the phone, the OS in the G700 is loaded in the internal memory which is projected at 160 mb and you have 120 mb free after that. Use your common sense, the components in a phone are directly related to what we get in the pc.U r confusing RAM with ROM.

IMO dont get either of them. Get a newer fone. Like the 6110 navigator. N73's times are over. It ruled its times though. And the g700 is also more or less as laggy as the n73. Just that the 6110 has 2mp cam. If you can increase ur budget and if you dont need wifi get the new 6220 classic. And if you do, n82.

Jul 4, 2008 at 8:56 AM
Yea, keep on increasing and get the Xperia or the C905. :D
The g700 is just a firmy update away from shedding its lag.Dad's buying the G900,so will post a review of the phone in a few days. If you can do with an average cam and ok music quality go for the 5700.6110 is a slider and nokias sliders are not what we can term dependable.

Well my budget is max 14K, any idea when N82 maybe around 14K-15K :D ,

1. And N73 is around 2 years old right?

2. And its not like its currently obselete or anything rite?

3. It definately beats the crap outta other mobiles in this price range(13K-14K) range rite?

4. From where dou you guys suggest me to buy the mobile?(Sangeetha, The Mobile Store etc.)(Someone who has some offers, gifts etc.)?

5. And I wanna buy an Airtel SIM, how much will they charge totally for some special numbers like say 9900077753 or 9900773335 etc. ?

6. And how is the battery life of N73 ME? What would the talktime be after some months?

These are my final questions before purchasing Nokia N73 ME.

1) Yes.

2) It isn't obsolete, it is now a VFM phone.

3) There are alternatives in this range from SE like K810i, K850i(a little costlier), N81 etc. But it's like I said a VFM phone.

4) I suggest not to buy from Nokia or Subhiksha. I vote for Mobile Store. I donno about their current offers.

5) Enquire with Airtel.

6) The phone provides good talktime. If you do not plan to use GPRS, then the phone can serve you well for 2-3 days, with couple hours of talking. AFAICR it has a 1200 Mah battery.

Go ahead & purchase it. :)
Don't forget to post your opinion once you get it.

ROM is the memory where the firmware or the OS of the phone is stored. It cannot be changed without a flash.

RAM is well, RAM. :D

Internal Memory is the internal flash storage where you can save your own files. And where the current user settings are saved. It can be erased with a format.

hello.Theres no "internal memory" or "ROM" seperate in a phone. The internal memory is where the OS is stored.G700 has 160 mb internal memory and 128 mb ram.The OS gets stored in the internal memory and 120 mb memory is left after it is done with.I have never heard anything about any bottlenecks in RAM utilization..U tell me,If u have 2 gb ram in ur computer how much is "actually used for tasking"?? baseless question.

In a N series phone like N73 you have the following.

1. Internal memory : Used for storing contacts, settings and your other customization files.

2. Ram : A volatile memory for loading OS and also used by apps.

3. ROM : Used for storing the core symbian os files. Is read only.

Internal memory and Rom are not the same.

ex. Even if you fill up the internal memory, the free ram on boot will be around 20Mb in a phone like n73
dreamcatcher
Jul 4, 2008 at 2:58 PM
How come when we buy a phone, any phone say, theres an internal memory listed.. But eventually we actually get a part less than what is promised. That part is used by the OS. and what you are saying about the RAM part is true, but it depends on the circumstancesa. There is no bottleneck saying that RAM more than 96 mb cannot be utilized or anything. If you use a performance manager, you will see that the amount of free ram differs from time to time.
Pathik
Pathik #73
Jul 4, 2008 at 3:03 PM
The whole OS isnt stored in the internal memory. The Core OS always lies in the ROM. When you run the OS the temp files and the user settings etc are stored in the Internal memory. You can resurrect the whole OS using just the files in the ROM.
If you consider a symbian fone,
Internal Memory -> C:
Ram/Cache-> D:
ROM-> Z:

u r still acting like a n00b , we get less memory in the phone than stated in the manual because a os comes loaded with several factory loaded apps like the search plugin and lifeblog and some third party apps like adobe reader which do not come under system files hence they are stored in phone memory . The rom contains only the core sytem files and nothing else. Now beat this .huh? And for your knowledge the type of rom used in the phones r known as eeprom .ELECTRICALLY ERASABLE PROGRAMMABLE READ ONLY MEMORY . So it can be erased. Actually while upgrading phone software the data is erased from the rom first and then its programmed with new data . And when it comes to sticking my head ,its very necessary for guys like me to teach you some basics when u and guys like u do these big mistakes and dont admit your fault .

In smartphones the OS is loaded in to the RAM. That's why we don't get all the RAM listed by the manufacturer.

For ex. the N95 has 64mb RAM, out of which 30mb is used by the OS. That's why it was left with only around 30mb which was not that much for a powerful smartphone like N95.

In the N95 8gb, Nokia doubled the RAM to 128 mb. But the OS still takes around 30mb. That's why the N95 8gb is left with around 96mb of free RAM.

So even though Nokia doubled the N95 RAM from 64mb to 128mb, the actual free RAM got quadrupled, because the OS still takes the same amount of RAM.

As for G700, the free RAM is around 90mb after the phone starts. One can leave virtually every app in the phone running in the background and still the phone will work well.

As for UI speed, G700 is actually SLOWER than N73. Whether the future firmwares can solve this is debatable though.
dreamcatcher
Jul 5, 2008 at 3:51 PM
I think a better term would be to say that the OS forms an image on the RAM, rather than its loaded on the RAM.Much like cache where the RAM stores the important files itslef such that it can used for easy recovery. But the SE feature phones use utilize the firmware directly from the memory rather than loading it onto the RAM.Please guysl what maybe true for smartphones isnt for feature phones.

@tamogno-better keep your mouth shut if you cant provide anything fruitful.
@krazzy-goto display and turn off transitions and then check the speed.
krazzy
krazzy #113
Jul 5, 2008 at 5:06 PM
Well till now I've only heard and read the term 'loaded onto the RAM', that too from sites like AllAboutSymbian. So, that's what it is I guess.

As for the transitions, they are off. Only helped marginally. The problem is when the app is started for the first time. It takes ages to start. Then when it gets loaded into the RAM, subsequent starts are faster. But if the app is closed from the Task Manager, then starting it up again is a pain. Also each Setting in the Setting app is an app itself. So changing multiple settings requires firing up several apps. This further increases the time and clutters the Task Manager. In S60, all the settings come under one Setting app.

I've said this before and I'll say it again. UIQ is not everyone's cup of tea and nowhere near as polished as S60. Whereas S60 can be as easy to use as a regular phone, UIQ makes its presence felt and is just short of hoisting a flag and shouting "I'm a smartphone". I'd only recommend it to seasoned smartphone users. I've used many phones and smartphones before. But never before had I encountered an OS that made me compulsorily read the manual before using it. A newbie to smartphones would be completely bamboozled.

Well there aren't many wi-fi hotspots in India to fully utilize the wi-fi in phones. But one can use it with the wireless setup at home and use it to transfer data wirelessly or connect to the net through a wireless router.

Jul 6, 2008 at 9:59 AM
Well, even in the hotspots.the wifi chip in phones are too weak tocatch any signal.you have to be in very close proximity to the tower to actually gain some accessi.e. 10-15 mtrs at least. At home is particularly pointless coz you would be having your computer or laptop to access the internet. My friends N95 cant access wifi from the point his laptop does so very efficiently.

I'm 99.99% sure every nseries phone is quadband so we can use them anywhere in the world. Though 3g may or may not work. (because of some dispute with qualcom nokia cant make triband 3g phone )

By the way n91 is too much outdated. Though it have excellent sound quality ,every other aspect of this phone sucks.

If you really need the wifi (i dont think most do) and dont care camera then you may consider n81.

these days most universities and colleges r wi-fi enabled...so n81 would be preferred over n73..but it requires 3k more....so if it si to be considered than which one..normal or 8 gb...which card is bundled with normal one.pLZ tell its pros and cons ..over n73

I'd suggest normal version of n81. It comes with 2gig memory card. The price difference is around 1500 and you can get 8gig card + reader at around 2000. So buying 2 gig version makes more sense.

And 8 gig is usb 1.1 . So the transfer rate is very very slow. And you get stuck with limited capacity. Because if you buy 2gig version. Them you might someday able to upgrade to 16 gig or even 32gig.

so n81 simple is usb 2.0 n' n81 8GB is usb 1.1 ..so it has slow transfer rates........and n81 it will cost around 14k, can it be used to view word, pdf giles as n73 do.

No. Both N81 and N81 8gb have USB 2.0, but their speeds are still very slow, more like 1.1. In the N81 8gb, because of the fixed internal flash memory, you are restricted to 8gb memory and compulsorily need to use the provided data cable to transfer data, which as I said is painfully slow. In the N81, there is a memory card slot and you can expand the memory upto 32gb if required. Plus you also have the option to use memory card readers sold separately, which are much faster in transferring data than the data cable method. So that's why getting the standard N81 is better. :)

N81 simple:
wi-fi, ...laks autofocous

currently wi-fi has no use 4 me..its 4 future ...may be i shall buy a laptop in future..which will definitely be having wi-fi...
i am waiting for long to buy N73ME:rolleyes: ..so i am a bit more attracted towards it., also some ppl says N81 is slower than N73( in this thread it is said that to fill n81 2 gb card card-reader is needed.....

my first phone was k750i .. what a fantastic phone .. i still think it as best cam phone till date ..

then moved onto k790i .. again a very good phone ..

but since then se have stopped producing phones which are really leaders in its segment .. while all this while nokia has come with n95 , n73 and best of all..n82

so its not about se vs nokia war .. but who has a better overall product out in the market ..

If you connect it in PC Suite or Media Player mode, then just pull it out. If you connect it in Data transfer mode, then Safely remove it, like any pen drive or something, by right clicking on the Safely Remove Hardware icon in the system tray.

Congratulations . And welcome to symbian world.

First hack your phone to install all applications. There are tons of guide. I prefer "drakkarious" method.

You may go to dotsis.com for softwares / applications. Some of must needed apps are. Xplore 1.22(file browser) , divx .90 (play divx videos) , nokia internet radio , cracked ngage , opera 8.65 , opera mini , msdict , emtube( youtube on mobile ! ) , resco viewer ( because default gallery is slow ) , handy taskman ( must must must ) , google maps.

One word of caution. If you're experimenting too much with softwares ( which i think you should at first few weeks ) , phone will obviously become slow and may give some problem . So you should take regular backup of your phone data like contacts etc.
