GUYZ'S can u clear my confusion

Well if u just wanna know whether u are on static or dynamic ip, head on to *www.whatismyip.com/ and note down your ip address. Disconnect and re-establish your net connection. Go to the earlier site and check if the ip remains the same. If it is, u have static ip allocation and vice-versa !!
That was one of the dumbest/easiest ways of knowing whether your ip allocation is static or dynamic. U can also know the same by typing in ipconfig /all in the command prompt. Your IP address will be listed in there. Disconnect and re-establish the connection the repeat the same steps.
Please post if u need detailed explanation of the second step

go to your network connections->your lanconnection->properties->tcp->properties->there if you find some ip address entered like 192.168.0.12 then you are assigned statically
if nothing is find and obtain ip address automatically box is ticked ,then it is dynamic
if nothing is find and obtain ip address automatically box is ticked ,then it is dynamic
in start menu "run" type cmd and run to get a dos cli:inside type "ipconfig/all" it will give u the result.also "route" will show ur network settings.dare to use CLI
Which ISP are you using and what plan are you on?

In general, unless you specifically ask for a static connection (which will cost extra), you will have a dynamic IP only (at least in India this is the case)...
If you are not on your computer, but want to know if some one else's computer is connected by static or dynamic IP, you can use the above method...

thnkx for the rep's man
@ parka.. not bad
Yeah dynamic Ip adress is the norm here in India but if you need a static ip adress then MTNL charges about Rs3k extra per year for that. But I wonder who would want a static ip address not the pirates atleast.

thnkx man for the reply.
and check out this free "understanding IP Addressing" guide from 3com:

Oh no.. you got it wrong.. ISP's are the one that give you the IP address, your system just doesn't get it out of thin air.
Now, if you are talking about IP addresses assigned by your router to your computers connected to it, then that's a different story.

sorry to say tht u r soo poor in networking.u r saying tht static IP ill cost extra.IT"S FALSE bcos dynamic ip ill cost extra .static ip is cheap ....
This is right way to find static or dynamiccool_techie_tvm said:
The IP which we get using command is not the IP given by our ISP..rather it is IP of our LAN card.

Dude, did you just fall from the sky onto the earth now? You got some new networking classes from aliens or something?
First you say that the ISP has nothing to do with IP address, now you're saying that Dynamic IP address is costlier than Static? lol... it's not us who are poor at networking, you are just boasting of something that you have no idea of dude. Believe us if you want.
I think he is confusing btwn local ethernet address may be some dhcp is assigning or possibly not.
while ISP's assign Dynamic IP addresse's sharing ur lan card(PPPOE) or via usb(unstable).this is in context of xDSL connxns.

better contact your ISP before making useless comments.Dude if static Ip was cheaper then why isn't our cost conscious ISP's providing that to us?And I told you the exact cost involved as it was a lil time ago.Static Ip is kind of a permanent address on internet. You have no idea what you're talking about.I guess you asked the question to know if you can get caught if some company finds out that you are doing some illegal activity(live downloading pirated material and such) can it trace you?So getting straight to the answer yes it can trace you even if you are on dynamic ip address if your isp cooperates with them fully.
I think U have a big confusion regarding this.dronadula said:
Call ur ISP and ask..what is cost of a static IP per month.I think it is around RS. 2500/- per month.

ipconfig /all displays the full network configuration information including IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway for all adapters.

And the IP of the LAN card is most of the time the IP address given by the ISP unless you are using a NAT enabled modem.
I think U have little confusion in this.Cyrus_the_virus said:
That is not IP given to your connection by ur ISP.
That is IP of the local network.
The default gateway of modem is generall 192.168.1.1
Than , the Ip of the LAN card should be in series: 192.168.1.xx
Where xx-->> 2 to 254
That is not your internet IP.
If you want to know the current IP of your connection than just visit this site:
You can see your IP.
^^ are yaar, that is exactly what i told. If you use a cable modem and do ipconfig, you will get your external IP. That is why I told NAT. If you're not using a NATTED Network and you do ipconfig, you will see your actual IP and not your local IP. Don't get confused.

Incase of cable connection you get a particular IP.
But not in case of DSL technology.
See, this has nothing to do with DSL or cable technology, the bottom line is, if you are behind a NAT enabled modem, then if you do IPCONFIG, you will get the local IP. There are ADSL modems without NATTING which is a direct USB link from the modem which has no extra ports, if you do an IPCONFIG when connected to one such modem, regardless of whether you are using BSNL broadband or sify cable, you will get the external IP.ravi_9793 said:
So, don't get confused, this has nothing to do with DSL or Cable technology. It has got to do only with the type of modem you are using. If a modem has got NAT enabled, then when you do IPCONFIG you will get the local IP but if NAT is disabled, you will get public IP.
