1. What is the purpose of the computer? What all applications and games are you going to run? (Stupid answers like 'gaming' or 'office work' will not work. Be exact. Which games? Which applications? Avoid the word 'et cetera.')
Ans: Mostly gaming besides lots of browsing and movies. I'm moving from my Acer 5755G lappy to desktop just for gaming performance otherwise I love that mobility. Basically FPS and RPG. None of the CPU intensive titles like BF3 or planetside 2. I plan on hitting GTA IV and skyrim again though

2. What is your overall budget? If you can extend a bit for a more balanced configuration, then mention this too.
Ans: Maximum 38K for the CPU itself. Will be selling my lappy and camera for the cash. 2K for the rest stuff.

3. Planning to overclock?
Ans: NO. With bad experiences and maintenance problem with cooling systems, I don't plan on that. So NO Z77 MoBo

4. Which Operating System are you planning to use?
Ans: Win 7

5. How much hard drive space is needed?
Ans: 500 GB is enough, I've 2 external HDD for my data and movies.

6. Do you want to buy a monitor? If yes, please mention which screen size and resolution do you want. If you already have a monitor and want to reuse it, again mention the size and resolution of monitor you have.
Ans: A 20" LED, but since I'm on a tight budget right now I'll buy an used CRT one for 900 Rs, will upgrade a few months later.

7. Which components you DON'T want to buy or which components you already have and plan on reusing?
Ans: Mouse only, since I have a lappy, I'll be buying a cheap keyboard and manage with my headphones for the time being.

8. When are you planning to buy the system?
Ans: Within next month.

9. Have you ever built a desktop before or will this be done by an assembler?
Ans: I do have some experience, but probably I'll get it assembled in some shop.

10. Where do you live? Are you buying locally? Are you open to buying stuff from online shops if you don't get locally?
Ans: Berhampur, Odisha. Yes, I'll buying everything online except the cabinet and monitor.

11. Anything else which you would like to say?

My planned config is

Processor Core i3 3210
MoBo Not decided yet. No Z77 though
RAM G skill ripjaws 4 GB
GPU ATI Radeon HD 7850
PSU Corsair 650 W (model not decided yet)
HDD Any 500GB seagate model should do

This comes to about 31K. Keyboard and optical drive would be another 1500. Within 6K range I'm yet to decide on the MoBo and a cabinet. I'm planning on buying a used CRT monitor for cheap right now. In 7-8 months' time I'll be getting a 20" LED monitor and another 4GB RAM stick. There's also a big chance of upgrading to a Haswell based core i5. So please suggest a good MoBo that won't bottleneck my config and also a cabinet that has enough cooling capability and can accomodate the HD 7850

Any other suggestions are welcome too. But please keep the considerations within 38 (could extend to 40K for any future proofing)

get Asus DRW-24B3ST for the ODD @1 ~ 1.1 k

and as OP says 500 GB is enough,
he can get a better GPU or Proccy with the amount saved.

@ OP : have you already bought win 7 ?
if you are planning to buy it , then the GPU might have to be Downgraded a bit.

No I'm happier with a better 500 Gb hdd than a 1Tb hdd. My PC would probably be online for about 15 hrs a day for downloads so I guess a better hdd counts. I'd rather invest in a better MoBo...probably get a better cabinet when I upgrade the cpu. Do you think those Frontech or Zebronics ones@800 Rs will hold up for a year before I get NZXT gamma or CM.

Also what's with HD 7850 vs GTX 660?
M
Jul 6, 2013 at 2:19 PM
^^ they can hold up, but it doesn't make any sense, you'd be putting .8 k + 2.5 k (approx) for the cabby just 1.7 k difference.
get gamma now if its within the budget.

you might use linux distros for some time and get win 7 later.
no idea about GPU's though.

Gigabyte B75M DH3 is a better motherboard. Also, as i3 3220 has no turbo boost, so the z7 chipset will go in vain.

you may get a better Proccy if you dont plan to buy a UPS. since 2k still left and local prices will be a bit lower.
i mean an i5 3rd gen
C
Jul 6, 2013 at 4:36 PM
Forgot to answer that, yeah my bro has a copy of Win 7 x64 and since he'd be buying a new lappy, I'll get it from him. No point of using ubuntu on a gaming desktop. I can get an used UPS from my uncle, besides we do have inverter too.

Think I mentioned it already, but I'll mention it again. There's a 90% chance I'll upgrade to a Haswell core i5 when I get an LED monitor 7-8 months later, so I want that MoBo to stand solid for the next 5 yrs. (i5 4770 probably?)

Also do you think 2 GB version of the GPU is worth 3K extra on my tight budget? I won't be going above 21.5" monitor.

Will be upgrading to i5 with TB later. But Antec VP450P? By my calculations 600 W 80+ PSU should hit the sweet spot. 650 W is just cautionary. I'd have gotten a corsair 600W PSU for ~4K.

Any budget cuts possible in this field to pump it over to GPU department?
M
Jul 6, 2013 at 4:38 PM
^^ why the hell on this planet are you going to waste the 7k to a "Temporary processor"

sorry if you feel this a bit exaggerated, but there's no point in investing 7k for a temp processor, unless you buy a completely new config later instead of upgrading this one.

and as for the budget cuts, if you're planning to get an i5 later, better get it now. (their prices are high though)
and why not i5 3rd gen ?
C
Jul 6, 2013 at 4:53 PM
The temporary proccy can be sold for 4-4.5K I suppose, no? If my budget weren't so tight like Kim Kardashian's *** I'd have gotten a i5 3570 right away. But I think the rest of the system should be good enough to NOT bottleneck the new proccy I get. I'm dying to play Assassin's Creed 3 but my lappy overheats and won't let me. That's why it's so hard to wait :'( I've already killed my lappy's hdd with my thermal shutdowns and after chkdsk could no longer handle it I had to replace it xD
M
Jul 6, 2013 at 4:58 PM
three things :
1. if you buy a mobo for an 2nd/3rd gen proccy now, it wont work with the 4th gen proccy you buy afterwards, so you would need a new mobo too.
2. if you get a 3rd gen i5, i'm not pretty sure, it will be that good as the 4th gen.
3. if you can even increase your budget by merely 4 k ,you can have latest i5 4th gen, (I dont know whether they are at the right price clot to be bought now)
C
Jul 6, 2013 at 5:19 PM
Yes I was actually talking about a mobo that'd support 4th gen Haswells. same LGA 1155 with h61 that'll be backwards compatible. Are you sure there's a market for old proccy?
My shallow research says 4th gens are 8~10% more efficient. 3rd and 4th gens are about 1k apart.
M

couldn't get this.
would you mind to explain a little bit ?

and yes, 8~10 % more efficient is generally with every update Intel does, so that info is correct.
and as for the Processors, the i5 4th gen proccys are available for 1k difference with first price at 12k i.e., 12k, 13k, 14k, like that.

the thing to consider is , will you use any of the further Effeciency which is available with 4th gen i5 and not with 3rd gen i5 ?
IMO, the upgrade will not be much with a casual gamer.

are you in a condition to increase the budget?
because both your Processor and MOBo will have to be sold if you plan to upgrade in 7-8 months.

Ah I see, it's 1150 pins! Hadn't noticed. So I'll stick to the 3rd gen (Actually I had a crazy plan originally, to buy the 4th gen Haswell directly without a GPU and buy the GPU 7 months later. I had heard HD graphics 4600 can hold its own ground, but chuck that idea anyway: The price to performance ratio with a MoBo replacement together ain't worth it). So what do you say, core i3 3220+GTX 660 (2GB GDDR5) or core i5 3550+HD 7850 (1GB GDDR5)

WD Blue/Seagate 500 TB

Totals to 46000 :'( . The proccy is i5 3550+GTX 660. If I downgrade GTX 660 to HD 7850, I get a leeway of only 2500, But if I cut down on i5 and get i3 3220, I get a cut of 5500 even with GTX 660. That comes *VERY* close to my budget.

DONT DOWNGRADE THE PROCESSOR.
even if you dont feel any lag in any work or gaming, you'll still feel like " yaar wahi le aate toh accha rehta" (It would have been better if i would have took that one) or like "why did I not bring that one, it costed just 2.5 k bucks more."

and more importantly, when you go from i5 to i3, you might actually face lags under heavy load.

actually, I still get jealours of someone having an i5 2400 due to unavailability, so had to buy i5 2310 instead, and i think like that almost every week :D

Street prices will be less than the price on websites.

I don't live in a metro. Even in the biggest city of my state, Bhubaneswar, I'd suppose prices would be same or slightly higher. If it were only 2.5k difference I'd have gotten core i5 but it's a whopping 5.5k yaar!

Buddy, me in BBSR too. The thing is that you can buy from M.D. Computers or Vedant Infotech, Kolkata, they will provide you shipping here. Even though Vedant does not have Online portal, you can always place order through Phone and plenty of members here have done so.

But since your budget has been upgraded to accommodate i5 3550 + B75 Motherboard, why not opt for an alternate AMD FX-8350 based configuration? And regarding BBSr hardware price, I might be little useful here.

as gaming is your main concern, and you will be running the pc straight for 15 hours, its better to go with intel as it has reduced load from wall.

1. intel i5 3450 ( whichever i5 you want honestly anything above this doesnt make a significant difference )
2. cheap mobo ( trust me, spend least on it, dunno why people here suggest super expensive motherboards. Having all gold or japanese capacitors make "zero" or "0" difference to the life of the motherboard, as long as you have a good psu and are not overvolting )
3. gtx 660ti / gtx 760 ( if budget permits )

rest you decide.

Save money on the cabinet, no need to go for nzxt gamma if budget is a constraint. Stick to getting a good psu and a cheap cabinet with 1 exhaust fan and add an additional intake fan. You dont need a cabinet full of holes.

The rest i leave to your wisdom, but these are my 2 cents.

Cilus bro, I'll PM you. I'm a little skeptical bout phone order though. And yeah, no AMD! They kinda run hot (even though their stock cooler is *better*) and I feel IPC is more important than cores. Except Crysis or BF nobody uses more than 2 cores and I won't be running CPU intensive games anyway. I contacted the local guy who had been our family's PC supplier for years and he told me to wait 2-3 weeks as the falling Rupee price has incresed the price of everything xD.

Most probably I'm getting an i3 with GTX 660 (660ti/760 outta budget) and will swap the i3 for i5 later. My seller assured me he'll buy it back for 50-60% price. I'm happy.

Noas bro, thanks for the suggestion but I think the cabinet makes quite a bit of difference. Two extra exhaust fans can mean a difference of 5-10C (not that it ever crosses 40 C here in Berhampur)

Here's a bang-for-the-buck pc :

Processor: Intel Core i5 3570K - ₹15100

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-H61M-DS2 - ₹2889

Graphic Card: ZOTAC NVIDIA GTX 650 - ₹12999

RAM: Corsair DDR3 (1 x 4 GB) - ₹2299

Power Supply: Corsair VS650 - ₹4600

TOTALS - ₹37887

Leaves you ₹3000 for a 500GB hard disk that you should buy locally IMO. They cost more online. For the cabby, get the cheapest Cooler Master available in your town. Nvidia GTX 650 instead of ATI 7850 is enough to run all PS3 level pc games (almost) at full settings on the 20-inch screen that you'd be buying.

whts the point of giving an unlocked processor with a h61 motherboard? you want to turn his pc into an atom bomb?

8gb ram is a must for a gaming pc, bf3 multiplayer takes 4gb on its own.

get a i5 3450 and a cheap h61 mobo, rest on ram

+1 for proccy and Ram advice,
but for gaming, dont you think h61 will be a little less ?

at least go for the gigabyte B75 D3hb, nothing less than that.
and change the proccy to something locked, coz OCing at this budget is a no-no from most of the Digitians.

That's a bit of an awkward advice.

I clearly stated no overclocking. A K series proccy is a waste anyway on an H61. And I might not regret USB 3, but native IvyBridge and SATA 6.0 is important. Plus the RAM will be clocked at 1600 that H61 won't handle. Corsair VS series isn't 80+ but CX series is. I'm sacrificing on the proccy end by getting a 3220 that'll be replaced by a 3550 plus another 4GB RAM stick (7-8 months later). All in all my choices have been made, I'm just waiting for a buyer for my Acer 5755G :D

Thanks everyone who replied

I contacted the local guy who had been our family's PC supplier for years and he told me to wait 2-3 weeks as the falling Rupee price has incresed the price of everything xD.

Most probably I'm getting an i3 with GTX 660 (660ti/760 outta budget) and will swap the i3 for i5 later. My seller assured me he'll buy it back for 50-60% price. I'm happy.

Noas bro, thanks for the suggestion but I think the cabinet makes quite a bit of difference. Two extra exhaust fans can mean a difference of 5-10C (not that it ever crosses 40 C here in Berhampur)

are you sure your "seller" will purchase the proccy again after 6-7 months ?

> replace CX600V with Seasonic S12II 520W. 520W is perfectly enough even for fx 8350 and 7970 overclocked.

> get WD HDD instead of seagate as WD's A.S.S. is better than Seagate's.

>My calculations (Thermaltake Power Supply Calculator) at 100% load and 25% capacitor ageing (yes, my PC will be on for very long times), it says 503 W. Just to be safe 600W is better especially when price difference is 200-300 Rs. At 80W difference in wattage, the thermal energy wastage difference will be minimal considering both are 80+

>It's just the opposite here! The Seagate guys here are uber nice, replaced my broken external hdd very quick.

I use seller in a generic way, he's a techie and my uncle's friend. And he's a man of his words, so I trust him. Btw isn't there a market for used proccy's?

there is, but if you start overvolting your cpu... i dont think its going to fetch a lot of value.

Its not about Wattage, its about quality. CX isn't a very good quality PSU where s12II are very high quality parts.

I won't over volt CPU if i'm not OCing in first case, it's just a safety margin.
I understand SS is far btter than CX but...I want 600W to be on the safe side. Heh guys, you are starting to confuse me again...lol

buy 600 W PSu if you insist and the budget permits, but if the forum guys say that 500 W will be enough, I see no reason to buy more than that.
BTW, what did your calculated Wattage ?

Almost all online psu calculators have exact same layouts in the same order. Now that you guys mention it, I'll think about seasonic during final buying time.

- Coming from a guy who has made 22-23 configurations for an online store.

I've got a very weird yet profitable suggestion from a cousin. He wants me to buy HD 7850 instead of Gtx 660 and mine some litecoins. If that works out he'd buy me another HD 7850 (free to me!) to pair it up with the other one (probably no crossfire but weirdly that B75 board supports crossfire but not SLI) on the condition that whatever I mine, we split it 50-50. I've explored cryptocurrencies earlier. Mining bitcoins with PC is no longer profitable, I doubt if it is at all profitable with litecoins. He must be nuts, but who cares! Electricity is free in hostel. I'll have ample cooling with 2 more 120 mm fans.

Do you think that seasonic 520W can still handle the heat with 2 HD 7850?

No, opt for a 650W then.
