Neither. They are not VFM considering there is Zenfone Max Pro M1 at 11k and 13k.
Kirin 659 on a >10k phone doesn't makes sense.

Yeah, Asus Zenfone Max Pro is a better choice for that price unless someone is looking for a compact phone, in which case Honor 9N can be considered.

B

Like mentioned above, good competitors at that price range+that skin and the notch is a deal breaker.

R

I don't like notch design.

The Honor 9N and the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 may be similarly priced phones. However, their build and design are quite different.

The Honor 9N sports a 2.5D glass at the front, while at the back, it features a glossy finish that features a 12-layer mirror finish. The Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 on the other hand, features a traditional metal unibody design.

Both smartphones come with the new taller aspect ratio which allows device manufacturers to offer larger screen sizes while still being ergonomic.

The biggest design difference in the design of the two smartphones has to be the inclusion of the notch. The Redmi Note 5 sports a more traditional display, while Honor has opted to include a notch in the display. This notch can be hidden by the user if they want.

There is also a slight difference in the thickness of the two devices. While the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 is 8.05mm thick, the Honor 9N is thinner at 7.7mm.

The Honor 9N is available in two colour variants - Black and Blue.

The Redmi Note 5 on the other hand, offer a greater variety. It is available in four colour variants - Black, Gold, Lake Blue and Rose Gold.

So, which smartphone do you think offers the better design? Do you prefer glossy looks of the Honor 9N or the metal unibody design of the Redmi Note 5? Let your thoughts be known below.

RN5 for metal build, better screen without notch and unlockable bootloader.

I would buy Honor phone if they remove notch and honor ui and make fast charging like oneplus.

Note is much sturdy having a unibody design, Honor, on the other hand, can have much better signal connectivity due to glass back!

The Honor 9N features a reasonably large 5.84-inch display. However, the Redmi Note 5 tops that with a slightly larger 5.99-inch display.

The Honor 9N offers an aspect ratio of 19:9 with Full HD+ resolution of 2280 x 1080 pixels. This is slightly more than the 2160 x 1080 pixel resolution offered by the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5.

Due to its larger size and slightly lower pixel count, the Redmi Note 5 offers a slightly lower pixel density of 403 ppi as compared to the 432 ppi offered by the Honor 9N.

Of course, the most notable difference between the display on the two phones is the inclusion of a notch. The Honor 9N has it, but the Redmi Note 5 does not.

The notch on the 9N may not appeal to everyone’s taste, but it does help offer a higher screen-to-body ratio.

So, which display do you think is better? Is the inclusion of the notch reason enough for you to choose one over the other?

But without a notch, the phone looks cool too. Increasing the screen to body ratio mean nothing when it cut some part. Your way of saying traditional display still makes worthy.

12 layer finish design probably costs more IMO. While the metal body is still good and you could have done better hardware or battery.

The Honor 9N and the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 also offer different levels of performance.

The Honor 9N is powered by the company’s own Kirin 659 chipset. This is an octa-core chipset with eight Cortex A53 cores, divided into two clusters of four cores each.

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 625 SoC, which is also an octa-core chipset with eight Cortex A53 cores, divided into two clusters of four cores each.

The Krin 659 offer a maximum clock speed of 2.36GHz, while the maximum clock speed offered by the Snapdragon 625 is slightly lower at 2.0GHz

However, the Snapdragon 659 is fabricated used a 14nm process as compared to the Kirin 659, which is based on the 16nm process.

When it comes to memory, both devices offer up to 4GB of RAM with 64GB of onboard storage, However, the Honor 9N supports memory expansion of up to 256GB, while the Redmi Note 5 supports expansion up to 256GB.

So, are you the type who looks at the performance of a smartphone before anything else? Do you think both these smartphones could make do with improvements? Sound off below.

Anything without a notch is better. Even a 5 year old LG E970 has better display than 9N. Please stop putting notches everywhere.

Honor play has better metal back but Honor considers 9N's glass back to be "premium".

If they pulled fund from EMUI and glass back "development" and put them into SoC and battery, we won't be having this x vs y discussion here.

I won't blame you for getting confused with names here because 9N is 9 lite with notch.

I didn't knew notches can be used to make a "successor" to the phone. We should just use some glass knives to cut notches and "upgrade" our phones.

The Honor 9N and the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 both feature pretty capable cameras. Let’s take a look at what they have to offer.

The Honor 9N sports a dual-rear camera setup at the back with a 13MP + 2MP combination. At the front you get a 16MP sensor for selfies.

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 sports a single 12MP unit at the back, while at the front you get a 5MP unit.

For better imaging in low-light conditions, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 offers larger 1.25μm pixels. The Honor 9N on the other hand, features a tech called 4-in-1 Light Fusion for better results in low-light.

Thanks to its dual-rear camera setup, the Honor 9N is able to offer hardware level bokeh effects, which the Redmi Note 5 can’t do.

The Honor 9N also comes with a bunch of added features such as AR lens that lets you play around with backgrounds and add effects.

the Redmi Note 5, despite having a good hand feel, doesn't impress us with its dated design. The only substantial change is on the front, where the company has chopped off some bezels to extend the display. From the back, it still looks like you are holding a Redmi Note 4. Sure, Xiaomi has added some curves to the back and sides which makes it more handy, but that's never enough.

Why consider RN5 when 9N is trying to compete with RN5 Pro because of the pricing?

R

Honor 9N is latest phone from Honor which has a front notch and glass back.

R

Honor 9N is a slight upgrade of Honor 9i in terms of camera.

R

Honor 9N is running on EMUI 8.0 which has added features on top of Android Oreo 8.0.

R

The redmi note 5 has a bigger 4000 mAh battery compared to 3000 mAh in Honor 9N.

R

We see that Redmi Note 5 also bests Honor 9n in other areas such as screen, operating system and a huge number of service centers.

R

And for those who wanted Xiaomi to release Mi A2 lite, the Redmi Note 5 is identical to it and with help of tutorials, you can get Android One software on it. This is not possible on Honor 9N.

R

Glass back is more susceptible to getting broken and scratched in daily use of Honor 9N.

Portrait mode on both phones worked well. The front facing camera of the 9N has a lower megapixel coun, but scores on a bigger aperture and this results in better low light selfies. Both front cameras incidentally handle face unlock very well, although we once again felt that the 9N was just a little faster than the Note 5 Pro.

Honor 9N glass back looks more premium but Redmi Note 5 metal back is longer lasting.

Honor 9N is running on EMUI 8.0 which has added features on top of Android Oreo 8.0.

EMUI makes including oreo pointless. You won't be able to tell if it was running on Marshmallow.

While writing this comparison, the only thing that I didn't find difficult to judge was the design. As the Honor 9 Lite has been putting the high-end phones to shame as soon as it debuted. I've mentioned this multiple times in our comparisons and reviews that the Honor 9 Lite has looks that's enough to convince you to buy it.

This discussion is not for 9 Lite. Also, which reviews are you talking about?

Redmi Note 5 has 18:9 front display buy Honor 9N has 19:9 front notch display. Notch is not liked by a majority of the users.
