I know how to download Youtube videos and I use youtube downloader plugin which does it well.

But for videos embedded on a webpage how do you download or record them?

Is there a plugin or software which does that?

If use Maxthon, there will be a default option that will popup around the corners to save videos.

Download and install Jdownloader and keep it running
now visit the youtube page and copy the URL of your video from the address bar
Jdownloader will automatically catch the link and show all videos (480p/720p/1080p;flv/mp4) and audio
right click on the desired video and select Continue with the selected link
much better than any other crappy online sites

IDM is very good indeed but it's not a freeware app unlike what Op wants.
