On a serious note, is xbox game pass like steam?

XGP is like Netflix for games, subscription service.
No xbox game pass is subscription sevice. Where you pay limited amount monthly and access all the games available in game pass. Something like Netflix or Spotify. You don't own the game. You only download and play. If game pass removes the from game pass library in future, then you won't be able to play the game.
In steam you can buy game and you have digital key you play forever until steam revokes the digital license.
In game pass when you stop paying, you will lose access to games

About last line, you said that we download the game and play. So, if we don't play then how is the access lost?
"Pay"

Really? One buys the pass and does not play a game for some time as they have notified and access is lost? Then pay again? Kamaal hai yaar inki.
No you are understanding it wrong. You need to pay monthly fee. If you stop paying after that month you will lose access to game pass library.
It is like renting game by paying subscription money. Once that period is over and you don't renew xbox blocks it
