Does this need a high speed Internet connection

It depends on your requirements.If you simply want to control other pc by using keyboard & mouse using basic color/themes even a 512kbps connection is enough.

if you want to use only RD forward port no 3389 (or set a nat rule) of the remote machine to the wan ip of the router
