MUMBAI (Reuters) - India moved a step closer to banning the sale of unpackaged cigarettes, with a view to discourage smoking in a country where close to a million people each year die of tobacco-related diseases.

More than 70 percent of the cigarettes sold in India are loose.

The health ministry has accepted the recommendation of an internal panel and will seek cabinet approval before imposing the ban, Health Minister J.P. Nadda told parliament in a written statement on Tuesday

Well good move. Except for the cigarette smokers.
Of course.

But whose there to enforce it? Will the shopkeepers deny selling loose cigarettes if they see losing a customer? Highly doubt that.

can be counter productive
people buy loose cigarettes to smoke less. If they have to buy packets, they will just smoke more because they have more

If you want to ban smoking, ban cigarette production and shut down the industries. :|

I feel it's not gonna change anything. Who will check on the shopkeepers, to see whether they're selling it as a packet or in loose.
There's already a ban on not to smoke cigarattes in public place, and only few follow it.

Exactly, my first step to quit smoking was to stop buying packets, Whenever I had an urge I had to walk 1km and buy a single one. So that helped me. Anyway lel govt, first banning porn, now loose cigarettes.

I don't understand logic behind this. Is government promoting to buy more cigarette by stopping loose ones. I mean if they have to ban anything ban the cigarette first not porn. No offense to any smoker over here.

Don't ban cigarettes, instead raise taxes on it. This would deter retailers from stocking too much cigarettes as well as customers from buying too many.

They can make it illegal and a non-bailable offence like marijuana is banned in the USA.

Marijuana is being legalized in many US states, but mostly for medical uses only. Legality of cannabis by U.S. state - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is helping to undercut illegal smugglers and cartels relying on illegal marijuana sales.

can't stop production, people will lose jobs and then illegal trade and lots more complications.
price increase will create poverty.. just extract money of out of those poor addicts and make them even more.
both measures result into illegal cheap quality cigarette sale, highly cancerous.

only way, educate and eradicate over generations..

Cigarette is being made by machines which uses far less man power when compared to beedis which is a cottage industry entirely made by human power.
So in a way, banning Cigarette is a boon for beedi industry.
