Since the relative demise of Netscape as the last serious competitor to Microsoft's Internet Explorer (IE) three years ago, most of us simply take our Microsoft browser for granted--warts and all. Virtually every Web site is optimized for IE, and every copy of Microsoft Windows sold includes a version of IE. And with total market saturation come opportunists: criminal hackers who use Microsoft vulnerabilities to take control of your operating system, steal your identity, or spread spam.
But out of the ashes of Netscape came the Mozilla Organization. Spun off from AOL, which purchased Netscape a few years ago, the Mozilla Organization has been quietly creating a brand-new Internet browser from the ground up--and sharing its code with anyone and everyone. The benefit of this new browser project is that unlike IE, this open-source code runs independently of your operating system, so a flaw in the browser software won't necessarily expose your entire computer.

Another source of Internet vulnerabilities lies within ActiveX technology, tiny scripts that automatically download when you visit certain Web pages. In most cases, they're good, adding music or animation to a page. But in some cases, criminal hackers have tweaked the code to damage your computer. Microsoft recently added a prompt to IE so that you can accept or deny ActiveX scripts. Firefox doesn't use ActiveX technology, which means that a few Web sites might not appear as their designers intended (although we were hard-pressed to find a site that didn't work because of this during our testing of Firefox).

While Mozilla offers a whole suite of secure, independent, open-source Internet tools, it recently streamlined its browser component and named it Firefox. Since last summer, we've been testing Firefox, and, frankly, we're sold: Firefox is just as fast and just as easy as Internet Explorer--and more importantly, it's much more secure.

And feature by feature, Firefox either matches or surpasses IE.

*Going forward, Microsoft will upgrade only the versions of Internet Explorer running on Windows XP SP2. The last standalone version of Internet Explorer 6 will work on versions of Windows up through Windows XP SP1.

Firefox is great ... but I use opera on linux as its lighter on the system. If you are still forced to use IE like I am, look at all the tips here - *www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/cookies.htm

Then use FirefoxIE :p

And if you are a web developer, there are a few CSS tricks that you can use to make the page render exactly like IE in any browser :)

That's the problem with those web designers... they've got such a small mentality.... Gecko is the most standard compliant rendering engine... still they mess it up with their scripting , optmizing sites for IE alone...

I have been using opera due to its tabbed browsing feature and ofcorz the true xperience of speed.
But if 2marrow if Ie comes up with a version 7 which has similar features and page loading features then i wud not crib abt having to switch over to it.coz wen Firefox bcomes popular ( tat is systems totally relying on it & not in sheer numbers) and it surely will b as opera not free,it will surely have its own set of problems.
As for IE activex does have it own set of advantages (online games,app s/w et all tatz wat u use broadband for) .The only major prb is tha spyware issue virii will stay along with windows as long as u use the net.
Even mozilla has its own set of spyware like lop.com comet cursors etc only thing is they r far less rite now.
The bottom line use alternate browser till its good in comparision to ie.Why just bash IE coz its by MS.Ie will make ur money worth wen u pay 4 a OS like windows with its intigration to default web progs outlook 4 example .
If MS stops ie and the major browser s/w becomes paid (y not its neither ur dads nor mine).U may have 2 shell out more just 4 a browser.

Who says its aint fast overall.But its is arguable and i belive it too tat opera loads text faster than any other browser.Try it on this very site and see how the page loads in both opera and firefox.
MY point is why tha ie bash wen u use windows ??????

Firefox is really cool. I took me quite some time to leave ie.6(my beloved and safe, or so i thought) explorer but after long hours of reading people's views of firefox and opera here on the digit forum i must say iam pleasantly surprised after switching to this browser.
I believe firefoxie (courtesy dexter of course) will be(i.e. when i make up my mind to install it) will be even greater. :)

Opera is the best...after all opera introduced the concept of tabbed browsing(am I right?).It introduced many more features too.Like mouse gestures,integrated mail client,download manager etc.And many other browsers copied it.Another worthy feature of Opera is the Notes .Opera 7.54 's interface is just snazzy...
And Opera is faster than other browsers according to me.

this goes for both FF and Opera
1. Tabbed Browsing -- it seriously helps, its more organized
2. not being a part of windows pakage -- with this i mean that IE being a part of windows pakage can be hacked to install various spywares, one single harmless looking OK button can do a lot things
3. lesser bugs .... not being a part of M$ venture
4. lesser choice for toolbar buttons .. just look at what buttons FF and opera can offer .. it helps in better and faster navigation
5. no need to install any 3rd party popup blocker etc

Opera
1.definitely faster than IE
2.wand password manager rocks
3.opera has those Fast Forward and Rewind buttons .. which change into login in a page where u have to login next
4.opera can show all pics in a directory with Fast Forward button .. no need to click on each and every photo link ... <--- i luv this one

Firefox
have you ever heard of something called Extensions
FF extensions make it more versatile and way more useful than any other browser ...
Just try these extensions in FF ->
BBCode
SwitchProxy ( if u use proxies )
Paste and Go
DownloadWith
etc

the bottomline is that IE has less features and less security

IE ? wat is that?

U talkinag about browsers? IE just another big bug in MS kit u get with the OS.

Its really a big hole in ur PC refer teh Chip Intelligent Computing NOV isssue cover story for more details.

I have been using Opera for more than 2 yrs. Its simply great. u wont switch back to IE. but it has some problem with the js dont woking for it.

With the arrival of Firefox, OPera is moving out .. Fox is growling these days..
Dont worry Opera fans.. they are coming with a big innovations... the Auto Resizing

Anyway Firefox is the best today. i reccomend it.. Opera.. still my fav... still the fastest.. no one runs ahead there

Try out opera and ull kno wat fast loading of page means.
U first see the whole page without the pics and gfx only the page with plain text then the frills add on slowly.
Unlike in other browsers like ff or ie wer in the page loads section by section by section along with the pics without loading the entire page of text.
one plus pint of opera which i like over others is the advantage tat u can customise ur page tabs by dragging them to loacation u want which cant be done in FF.
Also i havent seen paste and go in FF

MY first post here!

I support firefox. It rulez......

I too was diehard fan of IE6.

What i like in FF which is absent in IE:

* Download manager
* Fast browsing
* Easy web page saving
* Tab browsing
* Not a resource sucker
* Pop up blocker(which is in-built)
* Search tab for search engines
* More Plugins and add-ons are available

Everone say IE has a simple interface, but i find FF also having a simple interface.

=========

I like the about MAxton....

* Last webpage resume
* Connection speed indicator
* Ad blocker

The limitations of Maxton are :

* Slow compared to FF
* Clustered interface

Between , i dont have opera installed in my system...., it is a nagware IMO :evil:

I also tried firefoxIE which [deXter] suggested. IMO, it was ok , better than IE.

Firefox Rules

Firefox is too great. I was a die hard IE fan first, but then since the .8 release, I have gone full-on with firefox. Many told me to switch to Opera, but I can't stand Advertisements showing and stuff. Wanted to crack the software but then I said, when there is a better browser available, why not use it!

Err Guys,

I know this is a teeny weeny bit off topic, but has'nt anyone out here used:

*img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/maverickrohan/maxthon.gif

If u r an avaid IE user and want all kinds of pages to render well n want all the user friendliness u need in a browser...try Maxthon!!!

It can sit atop IE, Opera & use the Gecko Engine as well......

Botton line: Customization to The MAX

To check out all its features, click here:

MAXTHON FEATURES

Certain Irritating things about Firefox:

:arrow: Pages which are meant to be opened in new Windows, when u click on their links, actually open in a New Instance of The Browser, Thats pretty stupid considering the fact that u r using a browser with a tabbed interface. :(

:arrow: When u have ceratin tabs open and u wanna open other links, eg. Links in Favorites, Searches etc. They actually open in the currently active Tab rather than open in a new tab. :(

:arrow: It still does not render all the sites out there properly, and many download links don't work all that well.

:arrow: It still has problems with its embedded Download Manager, which is pretty Nascent on its own, Popular n much more effecient Download Managers like "Download Accelerator Plus" can't be integrated with it. :(

:arrow: It still needs a bit of tweaking to be done, when it comes to Request Timeout's on Slow Connections..read dial ups!

:arrow: Its Popup Blocker and Ad Blocker r not as efficient as those implemented on Maxthon..Try it out!

:arrow: Does not have good ASP, JS n ActiveX support & a few links which lead to downloading stuff don't work.

:arrow: It does not allow u to save web pages in the *.mht/*.mhtml (Web Archive) format. I prefer this to saving pages in html, as in *.mht/*.mhtml only a single file is created with everything.

Anyways................

I Personally use Firefox & Maxthon both, both r better than IE!

And just to letch ya know "Extentions", "Themes" & "Bookmarks" are just other names for "Pluggins", "Skins" & "Favourites", so don't make much "hue n cry" over terminology changes :!:

BTW, Check out Download.com, the most popular downloads site in the World, Maxthon is downloaded thrice as much as Firefox....a reliable Indicator...!!!

Democracy Rulzzz!!!

You choose, what suits you BEST->

P.S.:

Most of you know the History of the Browser Wars....check this out....

:arrow: Open IE....Click on Help on the Menu Bar -> "For Netscape Users"

A Help File Dedicated to make the transition from Netscape to IE simpler!

"Well a reminisance of the fact that Netscape Ruled the Roost once apon a time.....and now its History"

:arrow: Open Firefox ....Click on Help on the Menu Bar -> "For Internet Explorer Users"

"Well Well...A Help File Dedicated to make the transition from IE to Firefox simpler!"

Ask IE For Help, Get a Trojan

U.S.-based security firm Symantec has issued an advisory about the Phel Trojan, discovered on Wednesday, which infects PCs running Windows XP.

The Trojan infects the PCs when users call the Help controls in Internet Explorer. The Trojan spreads as an HTML file and attempts to exploit IE's HTML Help Control Local Zone Security Restriction Bypass Vulnerability, according to Symantec.

Trojan.Phel.A downloads and executes Backdoor.Coreflood Trojan from the down.spainglobaling.com domain.

It also attempts to infect computers running Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 or later. It also degrades the performance of the PCs.

When a .html file containing Trojan.Phel.A is opened, it displays two Internet Explorer browser windows. Downloads a file from the searchproject.net domain and executes it.

The Trojan is automatically executed every time a user logs on to the computer.

The Coreflood backdoor Trojan first made an appearance in November 2002 and had a variant in 2003. It primarily conducts a denial of service attack after connecting to an IRC server and gives control of the infected computer to an attacker.

Symantec also warned about two new malware – the W32.Protoride worm (medium damage and distribution) and Lifefournow backdoor Trojan (medium damage).

Latest IE Flaw Rated Critical

Two security advisories have cautioned against an "extremely critical" flaw in Internet Explorer.

The flaw, the latest in a series discovered in IE in the past month, gives the intruder the rights of the user running the IE.

According to US-CERT, the United States Computer Emergency Response Team, other programs like Outlook, Outlook Express and Lotus Notes that use WebBrowser ActiveX control could also be affected.

The organization’s advisory says that “By convincing a user to view a specially crafted HTML document (e.g., a web page or an HTML email message), an attacker could execute arbitrary code with the privileges of the user. The attacker could also cause IE (or the program using the WebBrowser control) to crash.

It also says that there is no complete solution to the problem. But Windows XP Service Pack 2 is not affected. Other solutions that the organization recommends is sending mails in plain text, disabling active scripting (which would make it difficult for the attacker to execute malicious code), not following unknown links and maintaining updated antivirus software.

The vulnerability is created due to the way IE handles the SRC and NAME attributes of the Frame and iFrame elements.

Advisory Secunia advises to use another product.
