i was a dialup user till now very new to using lan well any of u guys can tell me ways to transfer files from my friends comp to mine or otherwise
we both are on the same network

please help me out guys

just share da file u want to transfor and go to network neigbourhood select ur drive and file copy and paste

first make sure all the clients on ur network have an ip adress of the same class
lets not get into details
but to make it simple make ur ip address say 192.168.0.1 with subnet mask 255.255.255.0
and other computers on ur network as 192.168.0.X
replace x with consecutive numbers
do not repeat the numbers
once its done just "PING" the destination computer to check if everythigns alright
for this goto start => run
type in "cmd" without the quotes then enter
at the command prompt type in

Code:

ping 192.168.0.X

replace X with the number uve given for ur destination PC
lets say 192.168.0.2
if it replies everythign is workin and fine
now in each of ur client right click on the folder and select porperties
there will be a "sharing" tab
enable sharing there and select the name for the folder on the network
thats it
now in UR pc ... type this in windows explorer

Code:

\\192.168.0.X

the above ofcourse being the IP address of the destination pc
ull be able to see the list of folders being shared by that computer
note u can also use

Code:

\\computername

replace "computername" with the NAME OF THE DESTINATION computer
it works the same as above

Sharing is the key word ; but you gotta be more specific what is the "same network you are on" even Internet is a network
