Hi guys!

I recently bought a 55" LG TV UP8000 for which I created a thread here for suggestions.
Within a week of purchase the TV developed a dead pixel. After making several calls to service center and installation personnel and explaining them that it is indeed a dead pixel, they responded with on site inspection. After inspection they informed that LG provides the warranty service in case dead pixels only when the dead pixel count is at least 6 pixels.
Another person is telling that to get warranty service for dead pixel, you need to have at least 7 dead pixel for OLED TV and 16 for rest of the models. This same person also confirmed that LG UPxx and NANOxx series both have this issue which is reported by several customers. They can;t do anything about it and have been telling same to all the customers who have dead pixel issue below threshold.

So I specifically asked what if the dead pixel count is 10, will that be not enough? Inspection personnel told if those dead pixels are creating issue in watching, like all those 10 pixels are together and form a spot on the TV, only then they can take the complaint. Say you got 3 dead pixels in each corner and none of them near each other, one cannot raise a complaint for this case. They only honor technical issues e.g panel stopped working. As per LG, dead pixel is not a technical issue or whatever.

So basically, even if you buy a OLED TV which cost above Rs.1Lac and unfortunate enough to end up with 5 dead pixels, you can't do anything about it. Apparently this thing is there in all the brands like Sony and Samsung. Why no one mention about this anywhere I wonder.

I have asked the sales personnel to get me an update on this but I do not have hope here. I will update this post again after getting the final update. But it looks like I need to live with this.

Bad sh*t going on with lg nowadays.

I think so you should tweet the issue so that more people know about it.

I knew about this Dead Pixel policy and its been there for ages and vary from manufacturer to manufacturer.
Since, a single dead pixel is not visible from long distancing viewing they do not consider it a show stopper...

Post the picture of dead pixel here.

Dead pixel from near the TV. It is a single green pixel but it is bothering in all the dark scenes. If it was near the borders then I could have ignored it but it is in the middle of the 1st quadrant. I noticed it when I was watching Hereditary at night and mostly I watch movies only at night. In other scenes with color this is not visible for which I am considering myself lucky at this point. If the dead pixel was black then it would have bothered in all the scenes, whew. Not everyone would be this lucky if the dead pixel ended up being red or black and more in number.

signal-2021-10-10-015912.jpg

I do not know if the tweeting would help here since since I do not have any follower on my (dead)twitter account.
I am thinking even if I would have bought Samsung or pay premium for Sony and later they deny the service giving same explanation then I would be even more frustrated and furious.

If you know about this then please mention this when you suggest TVs. The buyer would be aware of this and will make informed decision. Now 16 dead pixels are a lot and if I ended up with 15, I would not be able to claim warranty. If Samsung accepts 10 dead pixels then I would have gone with Samsung and make peace with bad viewing angles. Sigh ... I already made peace with the IPS backlit bleeding in dark scenes. After sales services was one of my main priority. They told me it is clearly mentioned about the dead pixels in the Terms and Conditions. I have asked them a copy of this Terms and Condition, let's see if I get to see this hidden Terms and Conditions.

I knew about the policy but not about the exact count they will consider. Even if you have bought Vu/HiSense. You would have faced the same kind of policy there. No body talks about warranty policy while suggesting TV. Even if you see all the youtube reviewers video they will not mention about Dead pixel count in a Brand.

This has to be spoken every time someone talks about buying a TV. After reading reddit comments it seems like dead pixel is common issue and manufacturer do not consider this an issue. If this is common then this needs to be told a lot on every platform where they give suggestions. Imagine someone paying premium for a TV like Sony and finding out about dead pixel policy within few days. I am glad I bought cheaper TV. At one point I was ready to buy Sony X80J or LG Nano75 but went with cheaper model.

As you've mentioned yourself, dead pixel policy exists for all panels irrespective of company, does it really matter in buying decision.

Dead pixel is purely on luck (as you've found out that can happen to reputed brands too)

In forum, people adviced you to go for online purchase, low end brands, cheap panels; this TV was purely chosen by you!

Not claiming that the cheap panels would not have any such issue, but, at least you would have had a consolation that have not shelled a hefty amount for this!

First of all I am NOT blaming anyone here. I am already aware of my conscious choice.
I just did not wanted to deal with damages while transit or ending up with TV which someone has returned for some fault.
No one suggested this LG model and I bought it based on the comparison of other TV after getting demos. I just pointed out that if someone is aware of this then they should put this point forward on the forum.

Now, people should be aware of this since dead pixels are not even considered as issue by manufacturer if they are below certain numbers. Anyone paying money for their TV must be aware of this. It came as shock to me that even 10 pixels are not considered for honoring warranty service. If LG is ready to provide service for 7 dead pixels on their OLED TVs and Sony only consider it the count is above 15(assuming) or 16 dead pixels on LG Nano then buyer should decide if they want to risk their money for such a common issue.

I think your complaint regarding number of dead pixels is legit. These LG service center people are just trying to wiggle out of their responsibility.
I would say make noise on twitter, maybe it would get their attention there.

LG is market leader in OLED and monitor segments but I myself wont buy an LG monitor again. I had similar issues with mine long back.

If people started buying based on Dead pixel acceptance count in a Brand then the whole TV market will change. Since, they will give more weightage to Dead pixel count first than the features in a TV.

I am just saying this must be considered. Tomorrow anyone from here bought LG C1 because they had the budget and ended up with 5 dead pixels then the entire experience of owning a beautiful screen gets absolutely ruined. If Samsung handled it better, then I would rather suggest Samsung QLED TVs instead of LG OLED. And my hate for Sony is just increased even more. Why would someone pay premium for their TVs if they are going to end up issues just like other brands for slightly better picture quality.

We need to find out how other smaller brands like Hisense, VU, Toshiba etc are handling these cases and how is their panel quality and then weigh those TVs equal to big brands since most of the people want to go for big brands so that they can avoid the poor panel quality and after sales service. I think this is significant enough to be told.

As a last resort I have contacted the showroom personnel again and waiting for their final decision. But I think they are delaying all this to make me tired and hoping I would just accept it and sit quiet.

not sure about tvs but i have a samsung 20 inch b2030 monitor that was bought in 2010-a few months after purchase it developed 1 dead pixel,i complained to their customer care about it and a technician came and examined the monitor and replaced the panel.

After replacement, the replacement panel also developed 1-2 dead pixels after a while and it was again replaced.I dont know what samsung's dead pixel policy is for their TVs though,or whether they still replace monitors with 1-2 dead pixels even to this day or not.

Its really worrying, not to mention infuriating that the company is refusing to replace the panel despite the fact that it has a dead pixel at the center of the screen which completely ruins the viewing experience. And that dead pixel is not inconspicuous either-its noticeable well enough as its right there in the middle of the screen. And does someone really expect such glaring flaws in a 55 inch tv which is quite an expensive piece of equipment?!

Please write to the authorities at LG india and reach out to them on social media and see if they respond favourably to your request for replacement-if they dont replace the panel on your tv i will avoid LG hdtvs and monitors as far as possible from now on.

BTW how long after purchase did the dead pixel develop? And how much did you pay for the tv?

2 days back I asked the LG warranty services team lead to share those Terms and Conditions where they have mentioned about this dead pixel count policy, since he told me "It's already mentioned in the terms and conditions". Now that person is not even attending call.
I am also still waiting to hear words from the showroom manager.

I bought for 58K + 7.8K extended warranty and dead pixel came within a week of usage. I am not sure now that if I fight for a replacement then next panel would not be this bad. And say I decide to keep this panel then what if this current panel is of bad quality and over period of time one by one more dead pixel start to appear, but below the threshold count.

imagine the nerve of these b@s**rds refusing to replace a defective panel on a 60k tv! 60k is definitely not cheap by any stretch of imagination.

Btw did you receive a new, sealed item in box,or did the retailer give you a tv that was on display at their store and was likely to have been used by them for quite some time?

Too bad the service industry for electronic goods is always the same story in India. This is why I am afraid of buying an expensive monitor or TV. Gone are the days when displays lasted for decades.

I got demo and placed the order next day over phone. It was new sealed box which installation guy opened in front of me. Not sure if they packed the display unit or from warehouse. The showroom did mention that they don't have this UP80 model in showroom so it will come to your place from warehouse. The showroom sales person have been constantly in touch, it's the showroom manager and warranty team lead who are rejecting this.
Today I need to find the warranty card in the TV box and read that carefully about dead pixels.

my samsung b2030 is still working to this day(thankfully),albeit it has developed a few dead pixels over time.

my friend's samsung 20 inch monitor which he purchased around 2014- 2015 died this year.

I have seen plenty of cheap aoc 15" monitors where i work and they are greatly abused by everyone-sometimes they are even wiped clean by the maintenance folks using a coarse cloth(yikes) and soap and water(a big no-no for LCDs)-despite that they have been working fine for ages and i dont remember spotting any dead pixels in the ones that i have used personally.

I wonder how these cheap displays are so durable whereas a 60k tv develops a dead pixel within days of purchase(And is likely to develop more over time).

Hi everyone!

I found the warranty card in TV box. Look at that point 16. It says dead pixels between 4 and 12. So minimum 5 dead pixels are needed to claim warranty.

Seems like I can only ask showroom people to take this back and give a replacement to me. Let's see.

It says 4-12 range depending on resolution. So might be 12 for 4K (or 8K)? Also bright and dark dots counted separately. So there can be 11 dark + 11 bright dots and no warranty on it? And why is it written monitor instead of TV?

Also i think if the dot is actually very noticeable then it might actually be like 4 pixels since the pixels are very small especially on a 4K screen but they will hide that fact.

I don't know why it's written as monitor but this document was inside TV. Similar document snapshot was shared by Warranty Team lead so I double checked with my warranty card. The lead also mentioned that it is 5 dead pixels for your TV, which has 4k resolution.
i spoke again to showroom personnel today and they mentioned that they have sent some email to area sales manager and waiting for their reply.

^it maybe hogwash....they are simply biding their time by feeding you all that bull$hit-in the end they will say that unfortunately we cant replace the tv as your request has been denied by lg sales manager (even though they probably never contacted him in the first place and only said such things to appease you).

if possible write to LG's Hq in korea a very strongly worded letter and demand an immediate repair/replacement of the tv,also spam them frequently on social media and see if it yields any results or not.

but the pixel in question is right in the middle of the screen which makes it a bit of a nuisance and hence is difficult to ignore/overlook while watching tv-and why should such an expensive tv develop a dead pixel within days of purchase?

If they have any sense of decency then they should replace the panel anyway as a token of their goodwill towards the customer,no matter whatever nonsense they might have in their terms and conditions.

also why does the consumer have to abide by such obnoxious terms and conditions that they might have chalked out for their own benefit? Its not as if the consumer was shown the document and agreed to it explicitly in writing before making the purchase! also a lawyer might argue that it might be borderline illegal to force someone to accept a tv thats essentially defective just because it goes "against their policy" to replace it unless certain criterion (As defined by them and may be considered illogical or impractical) are met.

99% of their typical buyers don't even know what their repair/replacement policies are and only learn about them when the proverbial $hit hits the fan and the company needs an excuse to not provide them the required service.

As per LG, they could take the replacement request if the TV had problem out of the box. As per their policies, if it is Dead On Arrival. I wonder what they will do when there is only 1 dead pixel out of the box, but TV is working as intended.
I am waiting for final words from area sales manager. If they did not accept the replacement, I plan to post on twitter and tag LG India.

There is no Guarantee if the newly replaced TV(s) won't have same problem or other. This happened to me with Cannon printer, within 1 yr the PCB was dead. Replaced it on warranty and again the PCB was dead. But the warranty was over and didn't want to pay for next repair. Since, then I lost trust on Cannon (printers). Their Camera is still great though.

Once a product malfunctions then Customer(s) looses trust in that brand.

Exactly, I bought realme phone, ilked its quality (in 2019) and so bought realme buds wireless, but those buds were shi* one side stopped after 2months, then came lock down and it stopped working again. Now 6 months were complete and it again stopped working. I was so mad about it.

Similarly I bought mi band 4 in 2019, and was impressed with it. The band is still working nice and good till now. Thinking about this, I bought mi tws 2c this year, now one side of the earbud drains it's battery only after 10minutes whilst the other one lasts only 40mins. Also, the volume gradually reduces and air needs to blowed in the bud to make it working. I was so tired by this I am back to those cheap 300 headphones, hoping they atleast last a year. I had to specifically buy that one because in ear types don't suit me, only hybrid in ear or airpod style works for me.

any update on this ?
Hi! Sorry for not updating the thread. Got really busy personal things so could not login to forum.

I am in touch with LG India team through twitter. Then I got a call from the service center team telling me they can only provide a panel replacement. I did not accept it since my TV was just 5 days old when I reported the issue. And there is no guarantee that the new panel will not develop a dead pixel within few days of usage. I have asked them for a replacement only. Let's see how it goes.

Honestly speaking, I do not have much hope here since we are just "Indian" customer. If same thing was happening in US, Europe or Australia then store has to take full responsibility and replace the TV. Consumers there are protected by law of government. For now I am just thinking how much I would have lost my peace if I had spent 1.3L on LG OLED TV. I would advise against buying costly TVs since the dead pixel policy is very poor. It does make sense from business point of view to label the dead pixels less than 6 to be a "non-issue". But if it this happens within a month of purchase then they should provide the replacement. But its too much to ask as Indian customer.

AC Fridge washing machine can be repaired with aftermarket parts. TV Monitors are worst because you have to get a brand new panel which is the bulk of the cost.

Personally, IMO there should be a law passed that if you get a panel replacement, you should get a separate X years warranty for that panel. You are literally buying a new TV because a panel costs nearly that much. So it makes sense to get warranty as well.

Graphics cards are deadly, they become paperweight if they die out of warranty.
Thats one of the reason why right to repair is so damn important.

Even washing machine AC's are not left out from this problem as recently my onida washing machine was draining out water and couldnt hold water.Couldnt find the specific water valve for my model These companies just make a model one time and forget about it and focus on making different model No aftersales services for your old models(after 1-2 years). So couldnt found parts for my model.

How much old was that? Before 2010 onida was good, A 2006 model lasted me till 2018 until that developed the same valve leak problem, but I considered it not worth it to repair and instead upgraded.

The twitter thing didn't work since they just directed to me their service center and it turned out nothing after I denied the panel replacement. I told them clearly that I need TV replacement, after that I didn't hear back from anyone. I reached out to twitter and they told me "you already got the update on your ticket". Now what would I do with an update.

Now a faint red vertical line has appeared on TV.

I need suggestions from everyone if I should fight for TV replacement or just the go and accept the panel replacement be done with this drama?

I would say just accept the panel replacement, there is no difference between the two, if its a fault in manufacturing it would affect all new tvs as well..

Get the panel replaced ... my replacement panel on samsung monitor lasted 7 years

I just sent a message to LG for replacement instead of repair as a last tiny bit hope. I will raise complaint tomorrow if I don't get reply from their twitter handle before tomorrow.

Update:
TLDR: No update from LG

In 2nd last week of December I raised the complaint., Within 2 days, technician came and accepted the replacement of panel after a minor hiccup(he could not take pic of the vertical line since it was not visible in phone camera). In last week of December, LG service personnel comes to change the panel at home but has the wrong panel because the first guy did not update the complete model of the TV in the system. This person told me if part iis not available then it will take a week to get new panel.
Since then I am waiting for the replacement. I have received 1 call from LG and spoke to them on Whastapp about the pending ticket. I got the message from LG that ticket pending for parts. Basically there is no update overall ; still using the same TV. Not sure if the parts are getting delayed due to Covid.

You should have gone with VU instead of a big brand like LG. Which is not living up to its expectations.

I wanted a TV with better viewing angle that's why I went with IPS panel. This decision came after getting demo of VA and IPS panels. Only Samsung QLED TVs had wide viewing angles which was out of my budget. And I didn't know how better is VU service here in my area.
If I face more issues with this LG TV in future only then I will regret the purchase otherwise its fine. Only thing I feel is if I had bigger budget, may be 80K-90K then I would have gone with Samsung QLED panel. VA + better viewing angles + no IPS glow while watching TV at night in complete dark.

IMO IPS panel are not that much used as no body likes watching a TV sitting at angle position.

QLED is becoming a norm now. all manufacturers (Vu, Hi-Sense, Motorola, Mi etc) are coming with QLED panels.

Most of time TV in my home is watched by more than 1 person, so it is not possible to get exact front position always.
Also, earlier I thought since I am already used to IPS glow and backlight bleed through monitor, it would not be much of an issue but I was so wrong. Backlight bleed always bothers, can't ever get used to this. People who watch TV in dark places must avoid pure IPS panels for sure. After all these things including things mentioned in above post, came to conclusion that QLED TV would have been better.

Finally an update!

TV panel was replaced yesterday. Now it doesn't have any dead pixels. BUT, there is new issue now where which was not present earlier. There is more backlight bleeding from the bottom side of the panel. Those dead pixels were not as much visible as this backlight bleed on dark scenes. I got call from customer care asking if the panel was replaced yesterday. I told them it is done and explained about this new issue as well. In the end I asked them to close the ticket because I am getting tired of this.
This purchase has certainly back fired. *sighs
