1. What is the purpose of the computer? What all applications and games are you going to run? (Stupid answers like 'gaming' or 'office work' will not work. Be exact. Which games? Which applications? Avoid the word 'et cetera.')
Ans: Audio/Video editing, Designing in Corel, PS, GIMP, Running web server (apache), PHP Programming, I am not into gaming at all.

2. What is your overall budget? If you can extend a bit for a more balanced configuration, then mention this too.
Ans: 50k

3. Planning to overclock?
Ans: Probably not.

4. Which Operating System are you planning to use?
Ans: Windows 7 and Linux dual boot

5. How much hard drive space is needed?
Ans: 500GB is fine for me

6. Do you want to buy a monitor? If yes, please mention which screen size and resolution do you want. If you already have a monitor and want to reuse it, again mention the size and resolution of monitor you have.
Ans: Already have 20" TFT

7. Which components you DON'T want to buy or which components you already have and plan on reusing?
Ans: keyboard, mouse

8. When are you planning to buy the system?
Ans: Jan 13

9. Have you ever built a desktop before or will this be done by an assembler?
Ans: Will buy it from Nehru Place

10. Where do you live? Are you buying locally? Are you open to buying stuff from online shops if you don't get locally?
Ans: Yes I think so I can buy online

11. Anything else which you would like to say?
Ans: Yeah, I would prefer to buy i7 sandy bridge (may be better) with 16GB RAM. Not sure if this is too much for my requirements but I need system that can be upgraded later so I dont need to buy any new PC for 2-3 years.

Asrock 990FX Extreme 4 is not a good motherboard for the price. It offers only 4+2 VRM design, sometimes available at 5K Gigabyte boards. Get MSI 990FX-GD65 at 9K or Gigabyte GA-990FX-UD3 @ 9.5K. In fact OP can opt for Asus M5A97 @ 6.6K and get a more powerful GPU like Gigabyte/Sapphire HD 7850 2 GB around 14K. Also one of our forum members has purchased FX-8350 in Nehru Place @ 11.4K.

Even if you are not into gaming, I strongly recommend you to get Gigabyte HD 7850 1 GB @ 12.7K or at least MSI HD 7770 @ 7.8K. Applications like Corel, PhotoShop, GIMP do support GPU acceleration through OpenCL and AMD HD 7000 series cards do have better performance here over the Nvidia 600 series cards.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply.

I would prefer i3 3rd generation (or i7). However the options you mention will be available in nehru place or I need to buy online as I dont know how to assemble.
P
Jan 8, 2013 at 8:23 PM
these prices are quoted from smc international which is in nehru place
and @ cilus i think that the op has any need of a hd 7850
heck even i did a mistake by recommending a gtx 650 ti
so @ravisagar you can reduce the amout you spend by simply going for a gt 610 @ 2.4k
edit- also an i3 (even 3rd gen) would pale iin comparison to the fx 8350
so unless you go for the top of the line i7 3770k ithink intel is not an option for you

I have edited my 1 st post here and check why I have suggested him a GCN based card.

Regarding choice of Processor, FX-8350 is the flagship processor from AMD, armed with 8 Cores. In Multi-threaded applications, it most of the times beat the higher end Core i5 3570K and i3 3220 is simply not a match for it. Buddy, i3 3220 is a dual core processor and good for gaming. But for Multi-threaded applications, even a 9K FX-8120 will beat the hell out of it.

Just summing up. I didnt get which motherboard you recommended?

CPU: fx 8350-12.5k
MotherBoard:
RAM: corsair value-2x4gb-2k
PSU: corsair cx 430v2-2.2k
Cabinet: Cooler Master elite 430-3k
GPU: Gigabyte/Sapphire HD 7850 2 GB
HDD: wd caviar blue 500gb-3.5k

1. BTW this would be better than i3 3rd generation? Why didnt you recommend that. Sorry for stupid question :p
2. Would it make sense if I get 16GB RAM?
P
Jan 8, 2013 at 8:33 PM
you can go for 16gigs but afaik its still to expensive to be considered so 8gb should do for now and @cilus didnt see gcn angle thanks for the tip ;)

Jan 8, 2013 at 8:36 PM
Ok so you recommended MSI 990FX-GD65 at 9K or Gigabyte GA-990FX-UD3 but which one you suggest for my needs? and if I go for 16gb I think the whole system will still be within 50k.

*****configurations finalized so far****
CPU: fx 8350-12.5k
MotherBoard:
RAM: corsair value-2x4gb-2k
PSU: corsair cx 430v2-2.2k

I think you should go with Asus M5A97 @ 6.6K and save the rest of the money. Since the system is not for gaming or OP is not going for Multi-GPU setup in future, a good AMD 970 Chipset based will serve all the purposes. It also offers very high build quality and ASUS RMA service has been improved now a days.

For Ram, get a two 8GB (2 X 8 GB)Corsair Vengeance 1600 MHz stick @ 2.7K X 2 (Flipkart) with the money saved from the Motherboard purchase.

For Cabinet, my choice will be NZXT Source 210 Elite @ 2.6K. It offers 1 front USB 3.0 port, plenty of places, good build quality and very good cable management. Check theitwares.com for Online purchase.

@somebodysme OP clearly mentioned that He needs the pc for extensive apps to run and not for other tasks like gaming.
The ASUS M5A97 would be the best .
+1 to Cilus .

I already suggested him 16 GB ram (8GB X 2).

The reason of suggesting him a premium 1600 MHz Ram over a value series 1333 MHz Ram is that the Memory Controller of Bulldozer and PileDriver CPUs has native support for 1866 MHz ram and can handle higher frequency efficiently. In fact Toms Hardware has performed a test with FX-8150 where they have observed that FX processors respond very well with the higher speed memory. Now RipjawX, Vengeance all these 1600 MHz modules can run at higher speed and hence will offer better performance.
I myself running my RipjawX 1600 MHz to 1866 MHz speed (Check my siggy) and there are good performance enhancement. I tested it using AIDA 64 Extreme 2.7 Benchmark.

@Op just an advice if you are going to buy from nehru place then do take quotes from as many shops as you can and then compare and then buy.
My friend bought his rig from 5 different shops which saved him around 3 to 4k.

But you have suggested him i5 3470, not 3570K.

Now regarding the review you have posted, I was taken aback by the results, especially in Media Encoding using Handbrake. Also was hurt a little as someone called me a FanBoy for the 1st time. In this Bit-Tech review, FX-8350 was badly beaten by all i5 processors, even by i5 2400. So I tried the other sites like Tomshardware, Anandtech and Guru3d.

Here are the results:-

Thanks a lot guys. So here is the configuration I could sum up so far based on your reviews. Almost there..

*******
CPU: fx 8350-12.5k
MotherBoard: MSI 990FX-GD65 / Asus M5A97 @ 6.6K /
RAM: corsair value- 8GB (2 X 8 GB)Corsair Vengeance 1600 MHz stick @ 2.7K X 2 (Flipkart)
PSU: corsair cx 430v2-2.2k
Cabinet: Cooler Master elite 430-3k
GPU: Gigabyte/Sapphire HD 7850 2 GB
********

1. I can spend little more on MSI 990FX-GD65 if it is only the cost factor. If Asus M5A97 will serve my needs then I will ok with that too. Yes I wont be doing gaming but multi-tasking a lot and probably run virtual machine all the time.

2. Also which GPU out of Gigabyte/Sapphire HD 7850 2 GB you guys recommend?

I was checking the smcinternational.in site for these components. Guys I just want to be sure that I am not going to buy wrong model from nehru place.

AMD FX-8350 Vishera 4.0GHz (4.2GHz Turbo) Socket

MSI 990FXA-GD65 Motherboard

I could not find corsair cx 430v2, Cooler Master elite 430 on the site but I am sure I will get it in Nehru Place. Yes I will compare the prices before buying.

1.Asus M5A97 is fine. Suits your needs.

2. Get the Sapphire HD7850 2GB @ ~14k

Also, I don't think you'll be able to find CX430V2 at Nehru Place. Get it from flipkart @ 2.7k.
Also change the cabinet to NZXT Source 210 Elite (One of my favourites for budget builds)

And the RAM which you have to buy is Corsair Vengeance, not Corsair Value. Keep that in mind.

When no gaming but lot of editing, why not giving ATI FirePro v4800 a try. Rs. 10k I guess !!!

Try this,

AMD FX8350 @ Rs. 12,000.00
Moterboard Gigabyte or MSI 990FX Series @ Rs. 9,000.00
G.Skill RipJaws 16 GB (8x2) 1600 MHz DDR-III @ Rs. 6,300.00
Sharphire ATI FirePro v4800 1GB GDDR5 @ Rs. 10,000.00
WD Green 1TB @ Rs. 4,200.00
DVD RW @ Rs. 800.00
Cooler Master 212 @ Rs. 2,000.00
Corsair cx430 @ Rs. 2,500.00
Keyboard Mouse @ Rs. 500.00
Local UPS @ Rs. 1,600.00

Should come at around 50k (a couple of more if purchased online :p)

thanks but I am ready extend the budget little bit. I dont need DVD, UPS, keyboard, mouse. I also liked the NZXT Source 210 Elite cabinet, probably go for that..

right now my concern is how will I assemble it. I would try in Nehru Place first, hoping that some vendor will have most of these components - atleast cabinet, motherboard, cpu and psu...otherwise I will have to learn how to assemble - I assembled pc back in 1999 :p

I think in that case you can accommodate the Core i7 3770. Have a look at this.

Intel Core i7 3770 @ Rs. 17,500.00
Intel DH77EB @ Rs. 6,500.00
G.Skill RipJaws 1600 MHz 16 (8x2) GB DDR3 @ Rs. 6,400.00
WD Green 1TB @ Rs. 4,200.00
ATI FirePro v4800 @ Rs. 10,000.00
Cabinet @ Rs. 2,000.00
Corsair cx430 @ Rs. 2,600.00

should be around your 50k (+- couple of thousand) budget :D

One more suggestion, its winter so no problem but Delhi will go really hot in summer also, so try to buy a cooler for the CPU also, since Intel default HSF aint that good :p. No needed if your computer room is having A/C :D or in a relatively cooler place :)

aa buddy @ naxal it was specifically aforementioned by cilus and others that the fx 8350 is specifically designed to meet the the ops needs and also its cheaper so its the obvious choice
N
Naxal #32
Jan 9, 2013 at 2:43 PM
^^^

Indeed the AMD Fx8350 is cheaper, no point denying that. But sorry, I think in performance terms, at every segment Core i7 3770 will out perform the FX8350 in desktop segment.

FX8350 would have been a better choice over Core i5 but I dont think, if one can accommodate the Core i7 3770, should opt for AMD FX.

Anyway, since OP started the thread with desire for a i7, hence I wrote as I found the budget can accommodate the i7

The price of FX-8350 is really amazing.
You can Order the Motherboard from here: MSI 990FXA-GD65 Motherboard
PSU from here: SeaSonic S12II 520 Bronze 520W ATX12V V2.3 / EPS 12V V2.91 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Active PFC Power Supply

Although the Cabinet, 210 Elite is available with Theitwares, the shipping charge is 600 bucks, resulting a total cost of 3.2K for it. So I suggest you try to find any other alternative from your locality. Also check for the PSU Corsair GS600 in Nehru Place. If it is coming around the same price of the Seasonic SII12 520, get the Corsair one.

dont go the 60gb ssd maan.. atleast a 120gb is adviced even for only OS.. in 60gb, you'll have only so much space for the OS. after installing updates, you wont have mch space left for other apps

The charge is minimal. In most cases it is not more than 100 bucks. If you purchase from Theitwares (The link for the PSU), they'll offer you free shipping.

Regarding SSD, 60GB is too small for WIndows 7 and some applications. Save the money and get a 120GB SSD in future. Now you can get one around 6.5K.
