v1.7.13 is released and farewell · MPC-HC

v1.7.13, the latest, and probably the last release of our project…

For quite a few months now, or even years, the number of active developers has been decreasing and has inevitably reached zero. This, unfortunately, means that the project is officially dead and this release would be the last one.

…Unless some people step up that is.

So, if someone’s willing to really contribute and has C/C++ experience, let me know on IRC or via e-mail.

Otherwise, all things come to an end and life goes on. It’s been a nice journey and I’m personally pretty overwhelmed having to write this post.

Thanks to everyone who has contributed in any way all these years; Remember, MPC-HC is an 11-year old project.

Is the arrival of VLC killed MPC?

MPC-BE
I never like mpc-hc UI & because of that I initially started trying mpc-BE.Later I came to know that mpc-be is a fork from the original mpc-hc project where russian developers of the team have some conflict with other members & they decided to separate & start working on their own version of mpc. This mpc-be is still developed actively.

@Flash what killed mpc is lack of developers,VLC has nothing to do with it.In any case no person preferring video picture quality will use VLC anyway. That has been the case for many years now.

Is it the same one bundled in K-Lite Code packs right ?

I never liked VLC.
It just breaks the sound of speakers at 200% (which is not required)

Guys kindly suggest an equivalent alternative here as many of us use this player .
I personally am not fond of VLC in windows .

Personally I prefer to use mpv with SMPlayer as a frontend. But its a good minimalist player on it's own. Very configurable.

MPV homepage: mpv.io
SMPlayer homepage: SMPlayer - Free media player for your PC

If you download SMPlayer, it also bundles mpv.

I never used any other media player than VLC.

The 200% volume issue doesn't affect me since I don't watch on laptop. But does VLC degrades video playback that much as it's been claimed here?

Is MPC Classic (was) that good!

@Vyom Not MPC-Classic but MPC-HC(based on MPC-Classic).Just try MPC-HC(latest stable version) or MPC-BE(see above) or Daum Pot Player & see for yourself(for best results though install madvr which is supported by all these 3 players, with your R480 madvr should be able to handle high quality settings for videos till 1080p smoothly).

Affects external speakers also.

MPC-BE is a different version of MPC-HC being actively developed by russian developers of the original MPC-HC team after they left the MPC-HC project due to some issues.

This is a really saddening news damn it! Why great thing die like this! It was one of them things where you didn't even need to think which player to install after a fresh Windows installation!

Thanks whitestar for the recommendation of the MPC-BE.

Because there are no active developers left.

MPC-BE has active russian developers so it is the only option now for those planning on sticking with MPC.

This used to be my interim option when I stopped using VLC and then finally switched to SM Player (high CPU usage was the reason, else it was perfect :( ).

How come high CPU utilisation? What configuration were you following for MPC HC?

High quality 10bit x265 anime files are cpu intensive.Recent 1080p 10bit x265 anime files in my collection have avg bitrate of around ~11-12mbps(avg size ~2gb per episode) & opening & ending sequences with lots of animation & various subtitle effects push my pentium G620 to 100% usage at few moments.

The base MPC HC with CCCP for 10bit anime.

No wonder why the high CPU utilisation. I really hope we will get H/W acceleration support for 10 bit videos.

@SaiyanGoku how come smplayer is handling those 10 bit videos? Can you share its advantages over MPC HC?

I am using MPC HC + madvr btw.

I don't see why MPC-BE by Russian Devs, as @whitestar_999 indicated is not being considered an alternative?

The new overthrows the old. Switch to an alternative, Many players use hardware power with madvr
W
Jul 25, 2017 at 3:19 PM
madvr requires graphics card power for rendering, completely different from processing power required to decode video stream.Only after video decoding is done smoothly, then rendering comes into the picture. If everything is ideal(which usually isn't) there should not be any cpu usage difference between different players using same video decoder(e.g.lav decoder or ffmpeg) for decoding a video.

Yes. GPU and CUDA mostly. I don't think many people in this thread use the proper source files to even notice the difference made by madvr+filters.

Biggest factor is screen quality,I can notice difference between various madvr quality settings on some 480p videos only on a 32" good quality manually calibrated(using patterns) LED TV but hard to notice it on a laptop's 15" TN panel screen.

What type of proper source files are we talking here?

People like me are still using madvr on old Intel graphics with DXVA2 settings. And I see drastic difference between madvr and custom EVR settings. Both in quality and performance wise.

You must have Sharingan eyes :D I find it hard to notice difference on a 15" laptop screen with nvidia 930m graphics & some difference on 32" LED TV with AMD 7770 with 480p/540p medium quality videos. With high quality files of 720p & 1080p resolution(h264/265 avg bitrate 3-12mbps) the difference is even smaller.

Whether the difference is smaller or higher, still drastic for me.:))
