Mob tries to set helpless bear ablaze in Kashmir, probe ordered | NDTV.com

The Jammu and Kashmir government has ordered an inquiry into an attempt by a jeering crowd to set a terrified bear, which strayed into a village, on fire.

Footage of the attack that happened nearly a week ago in the state's Shopian district shows the bear trying to climb a tree in desperation as a crowd gathered around.

The villagers are seen tying a burning cloth to a pole, raising it towards the bear and poking the animal. The bear tries to perch itself further up on the tree's branches until it's unable to go up any further.

Soon engulfed in flames, the bear eventually climbed down and managed to escape, but its fate was not known.

"An inquiry has been ordered. A senior government official will hold the inquiry," Jammu and Kashmir Forest Minister Mian Altaf told NDTV.

"The bear had entered the village, but the locals had no intention to kill it. They had just gathered to watch the animal. I am told the bear ran away without being harmed," he said.

The attack was reported just two days before the Union Environment Ministry was due to host a global conference on bear conservation in New Delhi.

I thought we Indians were better than this.

Teenage Logic

And shotguns. Too many games?

Maybe when you have no idea how to handle wild animals, how about not posting trying to act like a know-it-all? Or maybe a little research before unadultrated "Teenage logic".

how to handle wild animals
1.see wild animal
2.call forest official/forest marshall(don't know what they call them)to trap the animal and release it back to forest.of course they never come
3.wait for the wild animal to eat you(in our bear's case wait for it to maul/maim you)

here a leopard went on a rampage it started mauling a man and a cop then shot the leopard dead.the forest officials came minutes later.the cop got arrested

Funny you miss out the fact that the bear wasn't really set ablaze in self defense. And also ignored this quote:
In the last one week, Kashmir has reported four instances of bear deaths in attacks by villagers.

And yeah let's keep attacking wild animals and engrage the animal so much more so that it (potentially) attacks even more. Very excellent logic.

if you encounter a hungry bear and Don't attack it and run. it will run after you because it thinks you're prey
so either you have to shoo them of with stones(because here people dont have pepper spray) or shoot them/kill them

Stones? Lol? Bears aren't dogs. If anything that would put you in even more danger.
And people would not carry pepper prays, but they'll carry guns?

How to Survive a Black Bear Attack
4. Fight back. If the black bear actually attacks, fight back. Use anything and everything as a weapon- rocks, sticks, fists, and your teeth. Aim your blows on the bears face- particularly the eyes and snout. When a black bear sees that their victim is willing to fight to the death, they’ll usually just give up.
hmmm i was confusing grizzly with indian black bear

And people would not carry pepper prays, but they'll carry guns?
yes they will they are more likely to carry guns.with border jumping terrorists

Setting an animal on fire is no self-defense!
"The bear had entered the village, but the locals had no intention to kill it. They had just gathered to watch the animal. I am told the bear ran away without being harmed," he said.

Someone wanting entertainment by watching the animal would ofcourse want it to be more interesting by setting it on fire. Why would anyone go near him in first place if they're worried about themselves?
