Hi,
I want to get my mother a new phone, she is using a old Nokia phone. She can use an android tablet without much problem so I guess she will be able to handle a Android phone too. I am not sure about Windows Phone.

She makes a lot of phone calls, and takes occasional photograph. She also spends lot of time playing games on tablet like bubble shooter etc etc

So the requirement would be, Good Battery, nice screen, Good camera. Please suggest phone under 10K Only.

Will be buying in First week of June.

1. Budget?
A. [strike]10K (MAX)[/strike] reducing budget to 7K Max, as I see many cheaper phones

2. Display type and size?
A. 4" +

3. Form Factor? bar, slider, flip?
A. Bar

4. Preferred choice of brand?
A. Reputed Brand, good After Sales Service

5. Preferred input method (QWERTY, touchscreen, numpad, touch-n-type).
A. Touch

6. What camera option you want? Please specify need for flash, autofocus, front facing camera.
A. Good camera for occasional snaps. Flash not necessary.

7. Preferred operating system? (Android, Symbian, iOS, Windows Phone etc).
A. Android/Windows Phone

8. Preferred connectivity options (3G, Wifi etc)Please specify clearly.
A. 3G/Wifi.

9. Preferred applications (Flash, Swype, GPS, etc)?
A. Nothing Specific, GPS would be great.

10. Primary use of handset (multimedia, camera, mails, internet, gaming etc)?
A. Phone Calls, Few Games (not heavy ones)

11. Any specific mobile phones in consideration?
A. Moto E currently, but I want to look at all alternates before buying.

12. Any other info that you want to share.
A. Longer Battery Life

+1 to Moto E

Moto E has an absolutely horrible camera. The other choice is Samsung Galaxy S Duos 2 which has a relatively good camera but offers strictly average battery life, your mom may find the TouchWiz UI easier compared to naked Android UI in Moto E.

in Windows options, Nokia 525 is quite good but its battery life is more pathetic than S Duos 2.

If you don't need good camera than nothing beats Moto E. I disagree with statement that TouchWiz UI is easier than stock Android. Lumia 525 is only good option I'd recommend.

If Windows is not a problem, Lumia 525 is a good option. Hardware-wise its very decent & the camera is very good for a 5MP.
MotoE has gr8 specs, but horrible camera.
Lava Iris406Q is also another option.

Android: +1 for Moto E, only 7k.
or you can have a look at Sony E1. Same spec as Moto E, but 3.15 MP Camera, 4" 480x800 display and 512MB RAM and a smaller battery. But costs an additional 2k.

Windows: Lumia 525

Guys, I have second thoughts regarding MOTO because of problems in after sales service. my friend broke his Moto G and getting it replaced is a big PITA for him. he is still not able to get his device for repair because they keep saying one thing or the other.

Lumia 525 is a good front runner now, I still have a few days left to finalize on the phone.

Read what OP posted in first post, a good camera is required, that's why I suggested S Duos 2 ............ Lumia 525 lacks flash, i guess

First gen Moto G prices have fallen steeply, you might wanna check out Moto G deals. Mediocre battery, a somewhat below average camera and non expandable storage are the cons but at this price point some trade offs are unavoidable. If Indian brands don't bother you take a look at Android One.

I can't find any. Further, Mediatek is also sharing their code for developers which strengthens dev support further increasing the life of the devices beyond two years (if they physically last ;)) .

What pains me is, so many tech noobs on this forum who hate samsung and have absolutely no explanation as to why.

RCuber : I gifted my mom an S Duos 2 a year ago. It's a decent allrounder with a good chipset(better than Moto E or zenphone 4) and good battery life.It has an average camera with an LED flash, quality of the shots is ok.

Also, the GPU in it(Video Core 4) is better than the Adreno 305 or the SGX544 MP2 so it would be a companion for those occasional gaming sessions.

android one oems in India- micromax, spice and karbonn are a joke, they arent good quality and have MTK cpus which lag and have worse battery life than Moto E
so its pointless getting a poorly made android one over a Moto E

Moto E has better quality, feels nice and sturdy
it makes no sense to get android one over a Moto E,even updates are equally fast
i highly suggest you get the Moto E over an android one if you are keen on android
if you dont take my word for it,try seeing it in real

also Moto E comes with Gorilla glass 3

samsung loads its phones with bloat and touchwiz is a battery hog and a laggy UI
its build quality isnt that great- the silver bezels chip off very easy
though i will give them credit for good hardware, mainly its poor optimisation etc which brings it down

There is no reason not to go for android One.From all three devices Karbonn Sparkel V is the one with sturdy build quality. They are providing warranty for 1.5 years while tier 1 brand provide same for 1 year only.Updates were given by Google directly even better these devices do not skip on any features or sensors.
Regarding chipset that mediatek chipset score 18k in antutu while snapdragon 200 in moto E results in 12k only. This phone have much better camera than moto E.Most important thing is you are getting stock roms.

Nope.

Talking about Canvas A1, Cortex-A7 is a core designed by ARM and both Mediatek and Qualcomm have licensed it from ARM and are using it directly. MT6582 has 4 of them, Snapdragon 200 only two.

Dunno about what's the case with Mali 400 and Adreno 302, but both should be around the same level since Mali 400 is too old. I might be wrong on this one. Mali 400 is again designed by ARM and Mediatek has licensed it. Adreno is Qualcomm's own design.

Neither Qualcomm or Mediatek have the ability to fabricate chips.

TSMC manufactures both Qualcomm and Mediatek chips, so no "low quality" thing if you're wondering; and being made on the same 28nm manufacturing process from TSMC, you'd expect them to have same power characterstics. Whatever you're saying about their SoCs is false, though you have a point about the external build of Moto E.

im saying this because my brother has a Moto E and a Lenovo S930 which has the same cpu as android one
its really slow and laggy compared to SD200 found on the Moto E,it could be the rom or something but hes tried changing launchers etc,no improvement, even apps are slow on it in comparison to Moto E

When i first saw the Moto E release even i used to believe cheaper snapdragon chipsets like the SD200 and SD400 were underpowered but the SD200 is actually a very capable cpu and handles stuff very well

the low quality thing isnt for the cpus,i was talking about the android one oems -spice,MMX and Karbonn who are notorious for poor after sales and build

the ARM thing is true but snapdragon performs better in real life than mediatek

the only reason one should consider the android one handsets over the Moto E is probably the inclusion of camera flash, otherwise the Premium sturdy feel of the Moto E puts most mid range handsets also to shame

i have two lenovo tablets both with mediatek and despite the good pricing etc, the lag and incompatibility issues which i face are rather surprising even though one of them is a quad core

Lag is due to unoptimized ROM.Android One devices comes with stock ROMs which rules out slow and laggyness due to unoptimized roms.changing launcher will do no good if kernel is unoptimized one.

I have been using my first Samsung smartphone, a Galaxy S5 for quite some time now.I didn't find any of the problems you speak about.

I do notice an occasional lag here and there but nothing that gets me frustrated.Same is the case with my Mom's S Duos 2.

Regarding build quality, it's not like every other phone is built of aircraft grade aluminium in this price range. If we are talking abour raw specs nothing beats a Dual core Cortex A9(A9>A7) and Broadcom 4 GPU.

Nah, TW is a problem, it's a mess actually. And also you won't realize that until you use a phone running on stock Android. It should be built from scratch.
Build quality is on the other hand is more than fine. After hTC, Nokia and BB I will rather take Samsung than anything else on the market. Some are utter jokes.

get windows phone, its lesser hassles etc
depends on usage really, for me i have phones and tablets from every os but my daily devices are-lumia 720 and BB Z10(Nexus 5 only for its OTG capability with my 1200D),ipad 2(my ipads 3 and 4 are heavier, heat alot etc so i prefer the ipad 2 for daily use),Nexus 7 (2012) as its small portable etc
frankly my daily devices are based on what they do best, windows phone functions best as an every day phone with its smoothness, excellent battery life and camera(I only use BB10 because i like to keep two separate sets of facebook and other apps related to promoting my site and business etc,i end up using my 720 more often)
ipad is easily the best tablet overall because of sheer design, smoothness and battery life etc

Also adding to the points given by ico on ipad. I haven't used any of the android tabs in the past couple of years. But I should admit that my 3 year old daughter really operates it pretty smooth. And whatever I used it for I had no absolute issues except for some random heating problem.

IPad is definitely very good. Butter smooth . The transition animations of Ios is best seen in an iPad imho .

When it comes to android I find Samsung galaxy tab to be good. Though it has touchwiz, it's smooth -contrary to what is observed on galaxy phones.

It isn't as smooth as an IPad , but better than nexus 7 with stock android

i dont quite agree, touchwiz is nowhere close to the stock android experience on a nexus 7
infact my nexus 7 is the only android ive seen come close to the performance by my ipads,my galaxy tab 2 and my 2 lenovo tabs lie unused in my house because they are slow and laggy compared to my ipads and nexus 7

I can't comment authoritatively on nexus 7 because I don't own one and haven't tested it's performance. My experience with n7 is my friends second gen nexus which I used for movies on a trip.

The Ui is not all fluidity and smoothness I can tell.
But If it was pure performance you considered, there is nvidia Shield tablet

Well, we agree to disagree.

But as I have experienced, there is some lag in UI. The bloated touchwiz however seemed good.
The lag might probably be because of the default animations scale at 1.0x, which I'm used to keeping at less than .5

Nexus 7 2012 i.e. the first gen had a NAND chip whose performance used to degrade after a year or so. That's why slow performance on them.
