Since there seem to be so many musicians in our midst, I thought it was a good idea to maintain a thread for us to upload pics of our instruments, songs, and have other discussions that non-musicians would find boring
I'll start first. I play the keyboards having cleared Grade 8 in Trinity College of Music, London. 8 years now, I got a Yamaha PSR 550. Its old now, but highly reliable, plus I know it inside out. Add to it I have no plans to invest in a new keyboard due to college admissions, it looks like I'm stuck with it.
Can cover any keyboard solo (not Dream Theatre, Jordon Rudess is God) like CoB, Kalmah, etc. I can cover thrash too (Metallica, Megadeth, bit of Sodom)
Maybe I'll upload a vid of Tornado of Souls
However, my left hand is pretty weak, so I end up playing chords or at best, simple melodies with it. I have to work on it (any tips?)

mapex drum set standard 5 with mapex double bass pedal.I wish i would be like Jan Axel of mayhem.yeah i know only dreams can fulfill that sort of talent.
1) How do you find it for the death metal covers you play ?
2) How good is it for playing single notes with high distortion ?
3) I wanna get some tone like this: YouTube - Kirk Hammett shows riffs from Master Of Puppets does it come close ?
And yeah has anyone seen ProCo RAT's or atleast its clones (similar sounding stuff) in India ? Never seen it in any online store so far
The SX looks like a sweet guitar dude! And to answer your questions :-
1) It's okay. It does not have the high-med-low or any other EQ settings so you can't get the crunchy low end sound of death or the scooped mid sound of thrash.
2) Again it's okay. It gets a little... umm... 'buzzy' but afterall, it's a budget distortion.
3) Well you might but good luck. I haven't come close to Kirk's tone.
Another thing is that the DS-1 is a battery monster and will burn through batteries in days. Right now, it's lying useless cause there's some fault in it. I am ordering the Digitech Death Metal Distortion in a couple o' days (best distortion <4k).
Just started to learn violin. I also am intersted in learning guitar. Might do that through online videos. Please suggest an acoustic guitar for learning purpose under Rs. 5k. Thank you.

Pick up any Yamaha model. They are all great! You might have to pay around 6k but they will be worth it. Other than that the Granada Dreadnoughts will be good.
Drummer here....
have my own band... mostly play hindi stuff(becuz of my bloody college)
and when it comes to music i like.... Post rock,Alternative Rock, Progressive Rock,Punk Rock,nu metal, hip hop
How are Kaps guitar? I saw this model Kaps FCP41 costing 4.9k and had digital tuner on the guitar itself. Any users? I need it for learning purpose so trying not to go above 5k.

OK lets forget Kirk's distortion for a while. Just think of normal songs, where you replace power chords with single notes (but higher effects to compensate the sound).
Does DS-1 sound good for that ?
Oh yeah and btw instead of Digitech Death Metal Distortion consider going for Digitech 7-in-1 Distortion Pedal. 6.5k and has sounds of every popular pedal around.
PS: You interested in parting with the DS-1 if the pedal refuses to work ? I'm looking for a dead pedal to salvage a few electronics from...
@MetalheadGautham :- Well it's good in that way. You can get Smells Like Teen Spirit esque sound (well, the song was recorded with the pedal so ofcourse it will give the sound). It will do as a good budget pedal. And yes, the single note thing is possible. It can give you that high volume, distorted sound for playing single notes in place of power chords.
And my budget is only 4k, otherwise I would have got the Tubescreamer or The Digitech 7 in 1 .
Gautham, you're a lefty? I've always wanted to get a lefty guitar, try and string it for a righty, and then see if i can duplicate some weird Hendrix sounds
For hendrix like sounds get a stratocaster and a big muff pi
BTW anyone here used an Ibanez Tone-Lok DS7 ? In the few video reviews online, it sounds in the steely metal meets big muff pi territory. But most of the videos were recorded under poor recording conditions. Anyway, @ 1.9K it seems to be the cheapest distortion pedal around.

And it also does some decent dream theater riffs (not leads) right ? The tone in Pain Attack is the EXACT one I saw in BOSS's youtube channel DS-1 sound check.
BTW I think you can buy a 7-in-1 if you sell your DS-1 for 2k to 2.2K which I think is possible if its in good working condition.
And yeah you considered getting a DSP instead of an analog ? Like Zoom G1 ? Entry level DSPs cost 4k and some of them can be worked a bit to get pretty decent sounds.
If you are going to stores to check out the sounds of various boxes, DO tell me how the sound checks go.
I'm dead confused what to buy and HOW MUCH TO SPEND seeing that I should even GET that kind of cash first. The amount of cash I get depends on a certain event in august/september...
look at my range of options:
Ibanez DS7 --> 1.9k price cheapest
BOSS DS-1 --> most popular pedal in the world --> 2.6k
Zoom G1N --> budget multi FX --> 3.65k
Zoom G1XN --> budget Multi Effects with Expression Pedal --> 4.5k
and on top of all these possible market purchases, there is the big daddy offer from a friend of mine who went from guitars to bass so is selling off his processor for a really good price...
Used but well maintained Korg AX1500G --> market value 12K, selling for 6.5k
Trouble here is that the higher I spend on GuitarFX, lower becomes my budget for other purchases like an external HDD. So I'm looking for the most versatile and useful buy which I can't possibly throw away later (which is why a very popularly used pedal like DS-1 seems attractive).

If you are looking for a long term investment then the DS1 sounds like a good toy. But the multi-FX pedals are serious bang for bucks. And that Korg AX1500 is a sweeet deal I must say .
The thing is that most of the budget multiFX pedals have shitty effects quality... noe what I mean ? I think if you are mostly into metal then you should spend on a distortion pedal. A pedal dedicated to a single effect will give you a finer quality effect... but I guess you already know that.
True, dedicated pedals do sound better for a single effect like distortion, but not when you're comparing a line 6 multifx to an el cheapo dist pedal.
Anyone ever tried multi-dist? I once went through an old boss dist + ax100 metal + amp distortion. god it sounded awful until i turned noisegate all the way up and learnt to control the feedback. was pretty psychedelic sounding after that
@Raaabo: Multi-Dist ? Never seen it live with the real stuff. Though my friend's BOSS GT-10 (the world's best digital effects powerhouse) can emulate that kind of thing.
I've all but settled for Zoom G1N since it fits my budget perfectly. That is unless I get a stunning deal for the DS-1.
Has anyone tried these DSP based multi-FX distortion pedals ?
I mean how well can something like the Zoom G1n emulate classic pedals like DigiTech Death Metal, BOSS DS-1, ProCo RAT, Ibanez TS9, etc ? I've seen patches which make them sound good, but never seen anyone use them to EMULATE the classics.
My DS-1 started working out of ****ing no-where! Woo man! Gonna have fun when I return from school. This means that I can get another pedal rather than a dist.!

we have to save our own traditional and cultural music.
and one thing I want to say that our music is not for entertainment like pop.
Its a real commitment, as you might know how hard is to learn instruments like sarod, sitar, tabla.

Indian Classical Music ???
Hmmm... I always wanted to learn and own a sitar but those things don't come for lefties because of half the country being full of superstitious idiots who believe the left hand is dirty and evil
Anyway, I tried playing guitar with sitar clips once. Was hard but sounded great.
Anyone from Ambala here? Wanna buy a zoom G1N. If you know a genuine musical instrument shop where i can get it, please post the shop's add. in reply .

You can look into Granadas and Plutos... can't get anything too good in that budget. I have a Granada PRD4 Acoustic which can be bought for 4k, and is a decent beginneer's guitar.
Nice to see so many people in the music scene.......
but I'm surprised no one out here poster that MIKE PORTNOY QUIT DREAM THEATER!!!!!!!!!
I dont think anyone can replace him.......but Thomas Lang is a worthy Candidate.....what say??!!
Mike Portnoy was a genius. Even if Lang can play all his parts, I don't think he can come up with drum parts as creative as Portnoy.

The main goal of an independent musician is getting the music out there. There is nothing more lethal to an artist of any sort than obscurity. Fortunately, the Internet has made it a lot easier for independent musicians. It is entirely possible for an indie musician to not only get their music heard, but to actually make a living from it, something that artists like Jonathan Coulton have proved. But in order to do so, you have to get your music distributed.
yeah...i think that too....but it is a pity that this happened while I was still alive.....this generation has witnessed the greatest progressive band fall apart..............
Yeah, and the creativity and the 'portnoyedness' cannot be created again..... .......and hey...catch me on fb...I'm Kislay Joshi..with Amd Phenom as profile pic....cheers..

Nice thread.
I play guitar and have a Cort EVL-Z4 with a VOX tonelab ST processor and a marshall amp which i hate. Gonna get a better amp soon along with a pedal
mixing, creating loops or beats.
i do all this stuff on PC never owned any instruments.
never shared my music online but here is 1 song i uploaded.
HipHop.wav - 4shared.com - music and mp3 sharing - download
lyrics doesn't make any sense.
its just some voices i added randomly.
my fav. genre to make beats are
Hiphop rap and old time disco ( BappiDA kind of )
^^I used to use audio editing software quite a lot. Ruining songs was my hobby
Now its restricted to more constructive stuff. Maybe I'll upload some of my stuff in some time...
Hello
I need a bit of guidance.
I am planning to buy a guitar. I'm a novice and i don't know how to play a guitar and what to look for in it. I'll take up a guitar course soon in some institute. Can u please help me out as to what all to look for in a guitar ? Also,is an electric or an acoustic guitar better for beginners ?
Thanx a lot
Am playing the keyboards since the last 14 years. Have cleared Grade 8 in Trinity College of Music, London, and have the Intermediate certificate(Grade 5) in Guitar.
Basically I prefer classical compositions. But having played in concerts in Delhi have good touch in Hindi songs.
My personal favourite composers are Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin. And Indian composers-Ilayaraja, RD Burman, AR Rahman.
I also listen to rock, metal, but not have performed in any Rock concerts.

That's very good credentials! And great taste too. Dunno why you are having trouble composing your own songs... I dunno much theory, haven't passed any Trinity or Royal test and I still can compose my own songs!

By the way I never said, I can't compose songs...
It's good knowing that even tech Guru's know about Music and can compose songs. What type of music do you like?
Thanks.

Hello friends, I'm not a composer or an instrument player but I like singing....
Even I've recorded some songs using Audacity....

Been tinkering around with my guitar a little more now that I finally found some free time and the internet's been helping me quite a lot.
One thing I noticed was, compared to all these classes people take for guitar, which may be from a tutor who often lacks proper fundamentals, its better to learn online from reputed instructors. Its actually worth buying some of the courses online.
One site I liked was metalmethod.com which is run by Doug Marks who was a guitarist with an 80's glam metal band. His complete basic course is bloody awesome.
Another nice online course (this one is free too) is Arlen Roth's lessons hosted on gibson.com here: Gibson Guitar: Electric, Acoustic and Bass Guitars, Baldwin Pianos and it covers pretty much a lot of things.
Check out the link I gave you on gibson.com you can play with acoustic for electric lessons too since what matters is that your hands coordinate well and you hit the right notes.
Infact its better to start with acoustic. And for other lessons look in youtube. There may be playlists with lessons from the start.
Nope, it is actually very simple. But I am a lazy SOB
Also, I concentrate on so many songs to cover at once that I am not perfect in any of them (Jack of all trades situation). Can play them, but not very perfectly.
How much your budget? I suggest atleast have a budget of 5k. You can go for a jumbo body GB&A or a Pluto or a Granada. Stay away from Grason, Givson, Hobner or other **** like that. Posted via Mobile Device
m a beginner to0...joined acoustic guitar classes 4 months back for 4months....used practice whenever I could get time...but now due to hectic office schedule...have lost touch....will pick it up again and also post my guitar pics
^^... make a tutorial for beginner... and post it here... M also new and I m not in touch for continuous 3 months due to office schedule.
I am trying hard to learn. And not able to join any class due to certain problems.

Here i am in front of Vagdevi Villas School with my keyboard... Got second prize (no video available)
This is where I used to learn. Though, I learned the basics from the my seniors in college.
Watch in sequence:
Practice those chords thoroughly. When you are confident of holding those chords, look for chords of songs to play on the net and try playing them. You will then pickup just like that. Reply if you have any doubts.
PS: Most important of all, you need to have a guitar

I am practicing but not able to hit the correct string without looking, and even by looking I make lots of mistakes. And also not able to stretch my fingers of left hand, like reaching the 1st and 3rd fret together.

dont get frustrated,it takes time(and im no master!).and guys its not the practice that'll make you perfect, its the 'perfect practice' that will make you almost perfect.just think like this-you play something, let it be a song, for about 100 times in which you play it wrongly for 95 times, then how can you expect it to be perfect at the 101 th time?so try not to make mistakes, coz music is all about hitting the right notes at the right time.so start to learn slowly and perfectly.always use a metronome, you can thank me later.know your weaknesses and strengths and choose the songs wisely,ie u can be happy knowing that you can play a simple song correctly rather be frustrated about what you cant play. and the golden rule in guitar is to never giue up playing(if u like playing).youve got a lifetime to play.so enjoy playing.these are somethings ive recently learned abt playing guitar

Yup, you gotta start slow. Don't move to the other strings till you are confident that you got one string right. I'll assume that you are trying to do the chromatic scale exercise starting at the 6th string. Don't move to the 5th string till you get your fingers adjusted to the fret positions. If you think playing fret no. 1,2,3 and 4 is harder, try playing at fret nos. 7,8,9,10 or 5,6,7,8 and then move down the fretboard as you gain confidence. Remember to play the notes up-down-up-down, this way you won't injure your finger. Posted via Mobile Device

Found a new hobby in music production. Started learning a tool called LMMS, which is a free DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) which can create some pretty decent tunes and has an extensive library of FX, presets and instruments. Here is something I made while fooling around :

PS: Its Industrial since its one of my favourite genres.
have you guys heard abt 'Sungha Jung'...he is the youngest and best guitar player....always wanted to learn guitar since college...but he inspired me to go ahead with it...he is just amazing...check this out...

good, playing some songs on guitar and knowing some theory are totally different.i also studied some theory up to circle of fifths and got bored.so ill be glad if some body here can share some theory they already know.like to start everything from the beggining.we can use the '' music theory the beggining '' guide from the ultimate guitar, which i think is more than enough for a begginer.so anyone
Of course, music has no rules. But music theory helps you to understand music better and provides the means to share your music with others, i.e. in a notation others can understand.
that may be the reason why their music is kindof 'basic'.but those who didnt knew any theory had atleast some idea about it like jimi hendrix etc.wont hurt knowing a little theory, but its hard to digest.all those ****ing scales, modes etc etc.i went for classes but they start from the beginning,ie playing those simple tunes like jingle bells etc again got bored and stopped going there
Is it okay to have 4 classes in a month?how often did you get the classes?(if youre going/went to classes)
Hendrix didn't know music theory either. He learned the guitar from scratch, on his own, without any instructor (In that order). That's why he is a guitar legend.
Actually, you don't need to know Music theory to make music, but you need it, if you want to tell others what you are playing or share it with others (provided they know something as well).
I am not going to any classes, I am learning on my own. I bought a book called "Complete Idiot's Guide to Music Theory" by Michael Miller. I read, do exercises and learn.
If you have the patience, this guy teaches free Music theory and he is pretty comprehensive:
Thanks for the link.the tutor is a nice guy and easy to understand.
There are many guitarists out there that are better than hendrix.even hendrix had openely said that he isnt the greatest guitarist since he said that he makes mistakes too often. So What made hendrix the ultimate guitar legend is his contributions to electric guitar n rock music.just some facts
-He popularised the tremelo and wah wah pedal
-used pedals and effects along with feedback and 'distortion',reverb.
-even a chord is named af ter him(hendrix chord)
-he destroyed his gear after the gig which many bands would later mimic.
-his obscure stage antics.
-he played a right hand guitar upside down.
-he could play guitar with his teeth and behind his back(you can see it in bbc's voodo child documentary)
-ditched the image of a rock band by taking leads and vocals at the same time.
-His music was hardcore and heavy at that time, beatles were pussies.
-that was the late 60's
in short he was ahead of the time and the god of guitar.
its a jazz chord.if youve played voodoo child its in there
Dominant seventh sharp ninth chord - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
so ive been playing with cheap picks earlier.2 days backs i bought the planet waves black ice picks

its a great pick up and i never really knew a pick could improve my playing.its a 1.10mm heavy pick.its too small, since its a jazz pick, and you can barely see its in thereholding the pick was very comfortable
unlike the cheapo picks and the end a bit shapened.its made up of some fiber or something.now im probably going to buy the fender picks next time since theyre also highly rated.
also i found my truss rod adjusting thingy after a year since the ****er went missing.little bit rusted but ok

lowered the action and straightened the whole fret board.my playing has considerably improved since then
What is the point of using an electric guitar without an amp?
If you are investing in an electric guitar, you will have to invest in an amp as well. Furtados Music Ltd. has pretty decent stock of both. Its situated near ABC farms in Koregaon Park.
You can get an Ibanez in around 15-16k, Fender will be way above your budget, you might get a Squier Strat at around 13k though. Since your budget is 10k, you can try for Greg Benett Avion series for about 11k and invest the rest in an amp. But you will probably get a shitty amp in 4k.
If you are a total noob, I'd suggest that you grind your teeth on an acoustic guitar first, learn the concepts, then move on to electric, 'cause playing electric guitar is a different ball game altogether.
Edit : The strats (Squier or Fender) usually (I mean, all that I have seen) have a Floyd-Rose tremolo bridge, which, even though very effective at maintaining tuning, is a pain in the ass to tune. So, you might want to take that into consideration before going in.
Edit : What do you want to play, BTW?
Edit : When you are ready to buy and if you feel like it, let me know and we could go together and check out some guitars.

Edit : When you are ready to buy and if you feel like it, let me know and we could go together and check out some guitars.
Covered the solo from One by Metallica, partial cover though. Covered all tapping parts. Also covered "Am I Evil?" by Diamondhead yesterday (including tapping).

Yes, I will be buying amp sooner but first I like to get my hands on guitar. Amp will be of same budget 10k-15k. Budget can stretch too.

the ibanez one youve listed is not worth the price tag of 27k.the grg or gio series are usually budget guitars in ibanez.dunno why its so pricey but you can get a real RG series(350,370 etc)which has wizard 3 thin necks,lo pro edge zero trem and slightly good pickups(INF).Dont know about the squier though.(original fender strats starts from 40k ithink)
If youre buying from your place you should definitely take Desmond with you and dont judge by the looks since there are shitty guitars that looks gorgeous

Thanks for the input. Yeah, I'd not be buying anything out of impulsive urge. Surely need Desmonds and other people's help here to get the one which suits me.
This Mini Amp plug looks quite portable and got good reviews.
You can get a good one for far less. Around 7k you can get a Roland Micro Cube, which is more than what you need. It is light, portable and runs on batteries, so you can take it around with ease. Also, it has killer effects.

Yes the Affinity is pretty good, but it has only single coil pickups, good for playing clean tones. Get this if you don't plan on playing too much distortion or if you only want overdrive. I personally prefer the Ibanez. It has 2 Humbuckers and a single coil pickup and can handle a lot of distortion, ideal for metal and hard rock, but it has an EDGE III tremolo bridge, which is a license-built Floyd-Rose, so re-tuning it will be a problem (as stated earlier). It'd be better if we go and look them up in the shop.
As for the woods, Basswood and Poplar are good. Not sure about the others, but STAY AWAY FROM AGATHIS. It is really cheap quality wood used to make doors and windows.
You can start with "Am I Evil ?". If you listen to the vocalist, you will notice the similarity to James Hetfield's voice. Diamond Head is a great influence on Metallica. Metallica even covered "Am I Evil?".

It's not bad, but it has no gain control, no effects. Its just a vanilla amp with low power output, enough to drive small speakers or headphones. Its better that you get at least a modest cube amp, like the Roland I stated.

edge 3 is a below par trem..stay away from it.ever wondered why the new 2012 ibanez models have edge 2?if some guitar has an edge 3 its from 2011.on the other hand edge 2 zps is a good trem, even the 80 k premiums have it[slightly good hardware though]edge is ibanez's own technology, like the FR.metal acts like iron maiden, yngvie malmsteen etc always used stratoriginal american basswoods are found in high end ibanezs.mahagony is also quite good, the les pauls are mahagonies.
rg 250s are discontinued i think.i meant its better to get an rg than a gio at that price range 0f 30 k like this rg.

Someone in facepunch forum recommended against Affinity or Bullet series from Fender. Standard series is better. I kind of like the zero point tuning system and the HSH pickup in Ibanez.
I have a ibanez gsas 60 from the gio series, brought it second hand.not bad just a budget guitar
Ibanezes are considered as the most versatile guitars. Most of the guitars from gio up rg tremelo series have ibanez made pickups, like standard, powersound and inf.theyre neither good nor bad.U can always change the pickups to suite your genre that you like to play, like if you want to play metal you can select dimebuckers or sd blackouts, dimarzio evo for rock and so on.go to dimarzio.com.there is a pickup selector so that youll get an idea.So any(most of) guitar can be made versatile and be matched to suite your genre. Those with custom made pickups can be found in rg prestige and premium guitars, but they starts from 50-60k.the difference btw std guitars and prestige/premium is that they are made in japan with better craftmanship.
IIRC the rg 370 dxs are the most sold guitars of alltime from ibanez, total vfm.The guitars youve mentioned are almost same.and just Search for squier bullet then you'll know how bad it is.
Forget everything i said above,Since youre a begginer you can opt for any guitar as long as it is playable or you can buy a used guitar like me and save to buy an rg premium.or you can direcly buy a good guitar.if you intend to buy something around 30k range go with an rg 350 or 370 and change the pickups, later, then you ll be getting somewhat a premium guitar.i dont have any experience with single coil strats, but avoid the squier bullets.
And regarding the rosewood and maple fingerboards-its sure that it has an effect on the tone, but they should be mostly considered in terms of playability.you cant say one is better than another,it comes under 'preferences'.Youre just starting out.,so never mind
I used to have an Ibanez GRG170DX, it had a FAT 10 tremolo and HSH pickup config. It broke, so I bought a ESP LTD m-50. With this, I sacrificed 2 extra frets and the S pickup for better tone, because tone is everything in a guitar..
Which one of these will be versatile enough and can be modified later easy ? Easy tuning is required too. If you can recommend another one then that will fine too.
I am more leaning towards this:
Vintage Modified Stratocaster® HSS
The 350s and 370s are almost the same.i would say, pick the 370,if you dont like the scratch guard and it will be slightly better.(check out the rg 470s also)As i said above any guitar can be made versatile, and changing pickups is almost the same, for the fenders its just the single coil.
But IMHO the classic vibe strat looks damn ****ing sexy,,and they will be more suited for your style.i will suggest you to watch musicians who use fender strats like Jeff beck(must watch),David gilmour,Eric clapton, eric Johnson,Ron wood(theyre more on the soft rock side) on youtube and see if you want that single coil tone or else go with the 370(Mr Vai,John petrucci etc )
Both guitars are good, actually. But it looks like youre raised your budget so my vote is for the fender classic strat
Yup the strat is good enough, all of them have vintage tremolos. I don't think you need the fat strat though for your kind of music, but it does help since it reduces humming.
Please note that the shop does not have a huge variety of models, so you may have to make do with whatever is the best over there. They have the Strat though.
Also note that looks are secondary and tone/attack is more important.
Edit : Do you have prior experience with guitars or you total noob?
^first go to shop and check out the prices, dont buy at first,do some research and buyand yeah the prices are very high.the 370s actually cost around 350$.
here's a guy playing fender squier strat

yeah looks are secondary its very temping when i see something nice like that strat
but we can shape tone by putting the right pickups, even dimarzio has those single coils, virtual vintage i think, and they claim it to have absolutely zero hum.

Its very costly here, and it costlier since $ value is high, most online shops have increased up to 4k.And we cant take any chances importing something from musicianfriend etc.Imo the budget guitars are costly most high ends guitars are about same as U.S price,if not a little higher.

high end guitars like the rg premium and prestiges, high end schcters etc are about same IMO.but they start from 55 to 60k here and about 900$ @musicians friend.even if you import something from ebay it will be more than the original price,so its better to buy from india,
You can look up Thomann Cyberstore. These guys ship everywhere in the world and prices are quite reasonable. However, damage risk and after sales services can be a pain.
You can also look up bajaao.com for indian prices, but prices will more or less be the same.
Furtados is the only big shop that I know. I don't think you'd get it anywhere else. Besides, Guitar market in India sucks, so your options are already limited.

I still fantasize about exactly this it to this day....
It was an accident, but the other party did not think so.

ohhh..you could replace the neck if its broken.btw nice gamertag
^they all seem to increase the price if we ask them.A month back i asked them about a mahagony rg 470 whether its a mij or mii. After 2,3 days they increased the price from 32k to 36k for the mahagony one and 1k for the ash one.b!tches.
hmm contemporary jazz like herbie hancock and guitar oriented jazz like joe pass may be level 1,but stuff like miles davis, coltrane etc are very strange,we need to get stoned to understand the music fully
^Maybe the author needed to fill those spaces.I guess the whole point of that picture is to show how much weirder a particular genre is.i dont know if its right but level 1 seems to be the top of a cliff
In reality there are weirdos in every genre.Lady gogo's fav band is iron maiden yet shes a pop artist.
guys...need a little help here...one of my frnd wants to buy an electric guitar...which one should he go for...his budget including amp is not more than 10k
^in India a 10k budget wont get you a decent setup, but you can get a good guitar like yamaha pacifica series, epiphone les paul, cort or even an Ltd m 10 for around 10k.Better buy the guitar and save up for the amp, later. However there are indian brands like GB&A,Givson-not bad for a starter, though its better to invest on some intl brand.and lastly
Is he sure that he wants an electric?coz he could get some nice acoutic guitars for that price

Though it is quite possible to get a Guitar/amp combo in that price, I'd recommend that you don't and save up a little more. At 11k you can get an entry level Greg Bennett Avion, which has pretty decent tone and go in for a Marshall MG-10CD amp for about 3.5k (I think).
If you still insist on a lower budget, you can get some brand like Java and some amp like Stranger within that budget, but be advised that both sound like sh1t (trust me, I know).

I hope you are talking about a second hand Epiphone Les Paul, because an Epiphone Les Paul starts from 27k. Yeah, the ESP LTD-M10 is a good choice, alongside the F10 Grassroot model. Both cost around 10-11k. Yes, it is theoretically right to buy the guitar first and then get an amp, but practically, if you have no means of obtaining (borrowing) an amp, you will have nothing to do with your guitar for an indefinite amount of time. So, I recommend that it is better to get a guitar/amp combo for beginners.
thanx guys for the input...as he is new to guitars...he is now not able to decide whether he wants an acoustic or electric...can you guys help him decide???

Obviously it depends on what he really wants to play. Both has its own pros and cons(not really).
Both are fine for a starters though.I started on acoustic, its a little tougher than electric,i will say.
Ill say Buy the acoustic if hes not sure, cant be wrong.Recently i went to my local shop,i played the yamaha acoustics namely f 270(not sure) and f 310.and wow They were really very nice guitars, for 7-9k they are definitely bang for buck.Cort also has some nice ones, though i havent tried-check youtube.
Or if he is okay with a used guitar, ill suggest going for it rather buying new.
^^Acoustics are little harder to learn than electric so,for beginners I suggest Acoustics coz once learn he can play any guitar acoustic or electric...

Not always true. Both have their own 'hard'nesses. If 'hardness' is the deciding factor then he should first play those wind/brass instruments, then playing the guitar would be a walk in the park.Better musical instruments=easy to play. However, most instruments are easy to play, but hard to master.

AFAIK playing a Barre Chord in Electric is easier than Acoustics...correct me on this.
bcoz of their size and shapes..electric feels more comfy for new comers than the acoustics
also there are genres that sounds most beautiful on electric and some on acoustics...
e.g: blues, jazz sounds amazing on electric

I don't find much difference holding barre chords, probably it depends upon the guitar. I still recommend acoustics for beginners, simply because of the price factor. Most people are not very serious or not very interested. Most just are just poseurs. So, learning on an acoustic will help them gauge how much they want to learn and how serious they are without much expense. If they decide to stop learning later, there is not much loss.

AFAIK barre chords are harder to play since it needs some good finger strength, because we are using our index finger to hold on all strings.people who follows the 'classical approach' in holding the left hand will find it more easier, but for an absolute begginer its difficult, maybe electric have a slight advantage over there.
Blues can be played in electric, like SRV or on acoustic guitars like john mayers,it can be played in harmonica/mouth organ, piano etc-thats why there is the blues scale,i guess.Dont know much about jazz, but i guess it can also be played in variety of instruments.but i ve seen 'jazz guitarists' using the hollow body guitars, mainly Joe pass, wes montgomery etc.

yes,ive some experiences.my jnrs after getting drunk will come to me and ask me to teach guitar.im no master but i know some chords and such ..and ive tried to teach them..not even a single guy have lasted more than a week, dont know maybe its my teaching.lol and some guy even brought a new guitar but its now rusting in the kitchen.
Since all you guitarists hang out here more, I will post here as well.
Looking for a guitar with a 1/4" output jack to connect it with laptop/PS3. Do not want pure electric ones, as I won't be getting amplifier at present and they won't sound good without amp.
Don't want them to sound weak too when played without amps, so, are semi-acoustic or electro-acoustic a good choice? Any suggestions upto 4K? Brand etc. doesn't matter.
Givson guitars Delhi, Guitar Shop, Guitar dealer in new delhi, buy Guita

How are these two in terms of connectivity? Any ideas?

hi,
if you can increase the budget up to 6.5k,I will suggest you to go for an acoustic guitar like yamaha, cort etc since they will make the learning easier.if you want to 'just' try out the electric sounds, you can install a pickup on the acoustic one
That would be hard considering my guitar is at home (in my hometown). This is from one of my older FB profile pics : *sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash3/533777_3516028948308_1668406566_n.jpg
Cant find any reviews on these.must be a new comp.atleast they look good in those pictures Hertz HzA-4102

please give some good tutorial on strumming with a pick...
coz I saw pick holding tutorials & can strum only down strokes properly the up strokes are not good (as High-E string is obstructing it)
but if I hold the pick from end exposing more of the surface then I can strum good (both up/down) but problem is the pick tends to slip away slowly
Nice thread! Seems like TDF's becoming a Hypermarket - For all your needs.
Anyways, I longed for an acoustic guitar. I don't have any idea about guitars, but would like to buy one and learn it too. Can anyone help me with buying one suggesting good brands, places to buy from (in Delhi), approx prices, etc. AFAIK, the Daryaganj area here in Delhi has a host of musical instruments stores, but they, probably will sell out for a premium and also, there might be a chance that some will try to dupe noobs into buying fakes.

hey mate, the problem with upsrokes/strumming up is that you have to work againest the gravity, thats why its difficult, but it improves with time.infact upstrokes are difficult to master.See some Marty Friedman videos,he is the king of upstrokes, but his hand position is unorthodox.it wont help you much, just see
Also the pick matters.I will post some videos i used for reference ,as soon as i get back home.

I find this strangely familiar. Whenever I cover something I don't have much trouble, but when I try to make something on my own, it always sounds shitty. This discourages me a lot. After seeing this, I feel I need to practice more.
Well, I've had guests and friends over who demand me to play some random song I have no idea about and expect me to know it. Left me **** face on several occasions. If I try to impro, they all have poker faces, having not a single clue what I am doing.
It does break my heart to see people who just learn guitar just for style or to impress some random chicks.

Thanks a ton for the reply. I have no reservations buying online, but somehow I feel, these things should be bought locally after physically checking/trying them (may be I'm wrong here). Just had a question unanswered. About the brands I should consider.
@Nanducob: Thanks for the video..I know that man (David Taub) seen many of his videos...
i'll see if that helps me what I posted above (my problem with upstrokes??)

yeah its good to buy locally,go with some one who knows abt guitars, but it will be a little costlier.Dont buy on the first visit, ask prices and search online if the prices are reasonable or not.
Good brands for beginner acoustic guitar are Yamaha,Cort.Yamaha f 270/310.Also look at the newer Yamaha Fs series,if theyre available.costs b/w 6-9k.Theyrall bang for yer buck.
A little bit cheaper options would Pluto,Granada etc.Dont shell out more than 10k on a acoustic guitar,if u are starting out.Other famous brands like Ibanez,Gibson,Esp have good guitars but theyre more than 10k-ish.
Personally i ve tried the Yamahas, they are nicely built(for the price) and 'fun' to play.

yup there are some nice teachers on youtube.Checkout Marty Schwartz channel 'Guitar Jamz'.Its very noob friendly, and h really loved it,when ive started out.
There maybe some more detailed video in youtube about strumming and about holding picks and positioning.but Let me tell you something, when someone first starts on guitar theyll get frustrated, because they cant do like the experienced and some problems will be like
'i cant pick the string without looking it'
'i am not able to mute the low strings while playing a D'
'i cant properly play a barre chord'
etc..etc
They say because,
They havent practised enough and they dont have the muscle memmory and they have less finger strength.
Think like this- you started on guitar and youve played for only one month, and after one month when you want to play an A chord
youre going to finger much more quicker than, lets say, when you started on the first day..isnt it!. ie you dont need to think that you have to press on the strings at the second frets -theyll happen naturally, after sometime. This applies for everything. Also You cant just practice upstrokes alone, instead play various patterns as in the video, watch his movements, like he is using his elbow for strumming and such..i guess just needs some practice and youre good to go

No, I was having some doubts. I placed the Tremolo pedal before the delay with no pre-amp or overdrive. The delay comes from my amp alongwith the overdrive. Now, the delay gets applied to each Tremolo "chop", something that I don't like. So, I wanted to know if there was anyway to circumvent this.

Bought a new guitar last month , with ideas of learning it.
Don't have time for guitar classes , now Its lying idle. Don't know where to start , though I tried playing a couple of songs , and somehow managed it. But still can't figure out the right way.
Any suggestion guys , on the easiest and best way to learn it ??
I've posted a couple of videos elsewhere in this thread. Look them up.
My suggestions, first learn to hold these chords : A D E and learn to shift between them. Then move on to G C D. This will take a lot of time so be patient.

Thanks , I tried holding the strings and frets and practised a little bit.
Pressing strings are quite difficult , however I guess I will get used to it.
What makes me freak out is that Its too hard to switch instantly to another note/chord.
I tried a song : "Tujhe dekha toh yeh jana ..." , and "Ek hasina thi..Ek dewaana.". Saw notes and took some input from Net.

First of all before you jump, do exercises to ensure that your hands can be stretched out enough. You can do so by taking your finger no. 1,2,3,4 (4 is the pinky) and place it on the 5,6,7,8 frets on the low E string (topmost/thickest string). Play each fret with each corresponding finger while picking up and down alternately. This will ensure that you remain in flow and your right hand does not get stressed. Start out slow, no need to rush. Also, ensure that all notes sound clear and not dull. If it sounds dull, just press down harder (this might hurt your fingers, but you will have to endure it for now. Take breaks between sessions). Once you've gotten a hang of that, try the same on the next string and so forth till your fingers get free. I know that it is not the most enjoyable thing to do and that it takes a lot of time to master, but trust me that it will help you in the long run. Remember that there are no shortcuts.
As for tuning, I guess you are using daTuner to tune. Ensure that the tuning is in this sequence for the corresponding strings from top to bottom : E2 A3 D3 G3 B3 E4. Its ok to break strings once in a while while tuning, just remember to keep a spare set handy.
^ 1 to chromatic exercises. Also listen to some guitar oriented music(english),if you havent.Youll get thousands of songs that sounds good even if its easy to play-like Pink Floyd-wish you were here,Bob Marley-Redemption Song etc..but only after learning some chords..
Thanks guys , you are helping me a lot. In fact am feeling more confident about learning them.
Will keep coming to the thread for help . And questions .
Thanks , again.
And btw , I have bookmarked those linked. Will definitely check them.
Guys, I am looking for a good guitar instructor in Pune. I need someone experienced in virtuosic techniques and music theory and not someone who teaches Bollywood crap with 7-8 Chords.
I can do open chords and barre chords without problems, my grip is a little weak though. I mainly like to play lead and I like to do some impro on the Pentatonic, blues and minor scales. I can do some two string arpeggios and tap arpeggios but I've not practiced this much. Only riffs and licks I know are from assorted songs.
Check my youtube for a few of my videos : *www.youtube.com/user/dessavio/videos
well I have seen Arpeggios but gets always confused when it comes to playing it...
there are many arpeggios like the C Major Arpeggio scale...but again I get confused (may be bcoz in theory understanding)
but wud love to learn them one day...
Dude, an arpeggio is nothing but playing the notes of a particular chord in a broken fashion. So, if you play the 0th, 3rd and 5th frets (in any sequence), you have just played the C major arpeggio, because you are playing the notes from the C major chord (C-E-G) . Similar for other different chords. You can also extend it beyond the octave to make it longer.
The 0th Fret is the open fret...duh! And I was talking about the high E string, sorry I forgot to mention.
You need to know scales and chord formulas to be able to play arpeggios . Knowing major chord formula 1-3-5 and minor chord formula 1-3b-5 is more than enough to get you started.
You don't really need music theory to get you started with scales/arpeggios, though it would help if you knew. That is a good article if you want to know in depth.
Otherwise, this is a more concise lesson : Scales For Absolute Beginners | Lessons @ Ultimate-Guitar.Com
BTW, I learned my music theory from a book called "Complete idiots guide to music theory" by Michael Miller.
Thats a formula and every chord type is contructed using the formula...
they are easy to understand but when applying them in playing Arpeggios u have to clearly understand the base
like u must have seen musicians playing "Do-re-mi-fa-so-la-ti-do" that is what Arpeggios are played over

let me explain (correct me if I m wrong): consider C major chord (C,E,G)..if I play the 3 notes in Frets (wherever they lie on fretboard) that means I m playing an Arpeggios of C,E,G..
will the sharps and flats included in that (like C#,E#,G#)?

thanks.but when we play a c chord (X-3-2-0-1-0) where c=3 fret of A string,e=2 fret of D string and g=open G. so thats CE&G=C Chord(traid?),so why the bottom two strings are involved?

Because the bottom two notes are C and E, also part of the C major chord. If you observe any chord, you will notice that all the notes used are one of the root, third and perfect intervals of the major scale for that same note.
It is not compulsory to play them, but you can make a complex strum pattern on the same chord using the upper and lower parts of the chord.
Thanks Desmond, sometimes its very confusing, guess i need a tutor,i have wasted weeks wondering what circle of fifths were..lol..after studying some basics,i got it right...
maan....my digital tuner has stopped working...tried a tutorial on youtube to tune the guitar by ear...but somehow I am not able to get the 2nd string in tune at all ....is it due to the stress on the strings coz the guitar was tuned and unused for more than a week??

fine tune 3 times...i didn't get u ??? The strings are not old...I mean before I had replaced only the 2nd string twice as I broke it during tuning.... :/
Tune as usual. Then fine tune it 2 times(to match to the std tuning-ie make small adjustments to be exact(more accurate).
If you still cant get it in tune, detune it completely and strech it with your hand, then tune once again.

It will take sometime for the tuning to set in. You will have to keep checking tuning over a couple of days. Until then, your guitar will keep getting detuned. DO NOT tune it immediately, you might end up breaking the strings. You can loosen the strings and try again though.
To tune by ear, you need a reference tone for atleast one of the strings, preferably the low E string. Once you get that note correct, then place your hand on the 5th fret of the E string and play both the E and the A strings. You should hear beats. The faster they are, the more the A string is out of tune. Adjust the A string until the beats become slower and slower till you reach resonance, this is when the A string is completely tuned. Repeat the same for all strings except the B string, for which you need to fret the 4th fret of the G string.
You might not get it the first time, you will have to listen very carefully and feel the vibrations to understand what I am talking about.
If you want to use an app, Datuner for Android is the best tuner app out there. But relying on your tuner to tune all strings is useless if your guitar's intonation is off. Use it only to tune one string and tune rest by ears.

N00b Query: When doing the practice exercise stuff (fret 1, then 2, then 3, then 4 on string E, then A etc.etc.), fingertips should be right on top of the fret (the vertical metal piece). But while practising chords, fingertips need to be in the space between the two frets?? Some guys on youtube do the former, others the latter! Highly confused!! Which one's correct? Better?
Edit: Is this the right place for guitar-playing queries? Or there is separate thread for that?

It doesn't matter where you place your fingers as long as they are to the left of the frets. Try not to place it exactly on the fret, since you might mute the string altogether.

1. While playing any string other than the Es, the middle and ring fingers invariably touch the string below the one they are playing therefore distorting it...Is this normal for n00b player or is his guitar-playing doomed forever due to his fat fingers?
2. While trying the practice exercise as in Desmond's 2nd video (1-2-3-4 fingers on 1-6 strings), the little finger just wont place right on the 4th fret after the other three are placed on the first three frets! This on a 3/4 neck guitar!!! Any tips/tricks/exercise to help with this? Maybe someone can post a very close pic of how exactly their left hands look (finger and wrist position) while fretting a large acoustic neck??
Yes, trying to fret as slowly as possible and with fingertips only. Is it normal for the index finger to hurt more than the others or does that signify something is going wrong while practising? Noticed index finger is grooved far more than the others! Pinky is barely grooved!
Seen and Ctrl+D-ed! Thanks. I was asking if I am overusing the index finger or perhaps underusing the others coz at the end of the day, the others don't hurt as much as the index.
Shouldn't all four fingers hurt the same?
That may be because - not all your fingers have to apply the same amount of force to perfectly fret a note, like the index finger is already strong,so you dont have to the apply the same force as other fingers. This is no 'big deal',just practice daily.
Another reason-If you practice for a long time, continuously it may crack the soft skin.So practice in sessions with rest in between.

Thanks. To be honest with you, I am hardly able to play even for 2 minutes at a stretch at all.
I am currently trying the Em and E chords. My index finger starts to feel painful right from the start..say, I fret one measure of Em or E and have to stop for a minute before I can fret again.
I fret a second time and have to stop again for a minute as the "groove" on the index smooths out..
Is this normal for a beginner? Or should I just ignore the pain/groove and keep fretting for 10 minutes flat?
----------------
I got some more nooby queries for you:
a. Should one first learn to fret all the chords of the A/D/G/C family and then work on progressions? Or should we start progressions the moment we are confident with two/three chords?
b. At some websites, (like justinguitar) I see that they say we should learn to fret with other fingers as well, meaning to say, instead of using the usual 2,3 for Em, we should also know how to play Em with say 3,4 or 1,2!!
My question is, does it matter at all, which fingers we use for a chord, or can we use any finger combo of our liking and convenience to fret a chord, as long as the notes come out clear?
you can play as long as you wish,if you can bear the pain, nothing wrong with playing 10 minutes or one hour straight.
a)At first you wont be able to do chord progressions quickly,so try to fret the chords at first and once in a while try to do chord progressions.
b)you can use whatever finger you like, but
more alternate finger positions=much easier/better/economical chord progression
for example if you play an E minor using fingers 3,4 [instead of 1,2 0r 2,3] and the next chord after E minor is an F major, then you dont have to lift your fingers, you just have to slide the fingers 3,4 on to the 3rd fret[string A & D] to make an F major plus other fingers. In the same scenario,if the next chord after E minor is a G major, then the more economical fingering for E minor will be 1,2,since you dont have to lift the finger 1 to do a transformation to chord G major.[hope you understood]
I dont know how long youre playing, but if youre just starting out its better to learn a fixed fingering for a specific chord and after some time when you learn most of the chords, you can just start doing alternate fingerings, though there is nothing wrong in trying now

Thanks. I got the part about the finger positions and chord transformations. I currently practice for about an hour-long session, 3~4 times a day. Hopefully once the fingertips become harder, I will be able to play at a stretch instead of stopping every alternate minute.
Its more important that you learn to fret the chords correctly and accurately. So, ensure that all your fretted notes sound crisp and clear and are not dull, that is you are fretting each and every note correctly. Also, make sure that you are strumming smoothly.
Its better that you learn from an instructor that learn yourself. You will learn much faster and make fewer mistakes. Learning the hard way will be too slow and you might not recover from any mistakes that you make along the way. Trust me, I know.
And pain in fingers is natural, keep practicing at a steady pace and it will be gone, it might take some time to go though. My fingers still pain sometimes.

Thanks. Currently, the only chord I can produce near-perfectly with some consistency is the Em. I have stopped focusing on chords too much and just focusing hard on doing tab exercises (1234321/112131413121/41424342414 etc). My fingers are already loosening quite a bit and the pain/soreness is going away too. I can now practise about 10~15 minutes at a stretch without stopping in between I plan to continue with these exercises for about 2 weeks (2~3 practice sessions daily for about 0.5~1 hour each, all days of week) before evaluating my progress and moving on to some chords.
Please do suggest if this routine/plan is ok or should be modified.
Edit: Some friends suggesting to buy "Guitar for dummies" or "Learn Guitar DVD Book" (something like that). Should I? Will this prove helpful given that I have no human instructor?

Uh-oh! Getting an instructor is a problem due to work. I work all 7 days and my hours are flexible and long. So, I can't get a fixed-hour, fixed-place person to help me with. (which is why you see me asking all my questions here). I am watching a lot of videos before I do "anything" at all to ensure I don't acquire any bad habits. [Although my thumb curls out a bit oddly whenever I am on the low E string - trying to find a fix for that]. Hopefully all you guys (and gals) here will help me out with your expertise.
And pain in fingers is natural, keep practicing at a steady pace and it will be gone, it might take some time to go though. My fingers still pain sometimes.
Yeah, actually the pain is already decreased to a great extent and the notes are coming loud and clear (mostly ). But how come your fingers pain? I thought if you played for a year or so, its bye-bye pain forever??
No matter how many books you read/ videos you watch, everyone has different ways of playing and prone to different mistakes. An instructor will guide you by observing how you play and suggesting techniques accordingly. This cannot be accomplished via solo learning, so you will have to evaluate your own progress. At least, hang around with friends who know how to play and jam along with them, you will surely pick up something.
One fast way to learn (how I learned, basically) is find chords for songs you want to cover (you can find them on ultimate-guitar.com or other such sites), then observe what chords are required to play the song and learn those chords first. Once done, try playing that song bit by bit. It will be more fun to learn this way. But, do not make this the sole method to learn. Only do this when you are bored of the exercises and once again, accuracy is important.
What kind of songs do you want to play? Perhaps I can give some specific instructions.
Edit: About the pain...well, I've been playing for close to four years, but I am also lazy so when I get out of touch, my fingers pain . But my elbow pains more.

Well, Eagles definitely. Some GNR, Scorpions perhaps. Maybe some Metallica but positively nothing like Slip Knot.
Anyway, isn't it too early for songs for me? Even "Row row row your boat"? I had almost convinced myself that I won't think of playing songs till at least 1 year of learning all this stuff.

I just realized that the most sore part of my body due to the guitar is not my fingers but the upper right side of the chest where the guitar-shoulder (fat acoustic) braces against it.
Q: Do we have to replace the whole bridge of the guitar? coz the white line on which the strings rest is getting deeper string marks and is slightly breaked?
Q: Do we have to replace the whole bridge of the guitar? coz the white line on which the strings rest is getting deeper string marks and is slightly breaked?
I think just replacing the saddle (white line on which the strings rest) should be enough. Unless of course the whole bridge is coming out of the body which you can determine by trying to slide a thin piece of notebook paper underneath the bridge. Even if a little part of the paper goes in, time to visit a luthier.
Yes definitely. However for electric guitars, you need to find exact match/model. Also, they come in packs of 6~7s, not sure if single ones are available. Not sure of cost.
Acoustic saddles should come within 20~50 bucks I think. Is yours acoustic or electric?

Ok, I have a bunch of n00b queries coming up shortly; but for now,
a. While strumming eighth-notes, or say, simply strumming down and up, I can get all the notes of the chord on the down strum but during the up strum, I barely hit 2~3 strings of the chord. Its especially a problem while strumming 5 or 6 string chords.
Any tips on right hand positioning to better this? [Note that I am consciously strumming from the elbow as much as possible while trying to keep my wrist as loose as possible.]
b. I just learnt "Jingle Bells" [just tab notes, not on chords]. On the second line, I got - 1111 - 1000 - 0330 - 3 3 - on the first string. Now in the second measure of that line, when I go from that 1 to the 0, there is a buzz as I change over (release the 1 basically). What am I doing wrong and how do I minimize/get rid of the buzz?
I currently practice for about an hour-long session, 3~4 times a day. Hopefully once the fingertips become harder, I will be able to play at a stretch instead of stopping every alternate minute.
Ok. I found some suggestions that when strumming eighth notes, only down strums need to have all strings of the chord, and the up strum may have only the first 3 strings of the chord. Which sounded like very dubious advice to me. That's obviously incorrect right?
See, when I play the 1st string 1st fret on its own (say like a 1 1 1 1), it sounds perfect. Its only when I am playing a 1 0, while releasing the 1, as I am releasing it, I get a slight buzzing. I guess as the string is still vibrating when I am releasing the 1 to play the 0, this is why it happens (or maybe I should release it fast and not slowly ? ) . I am pretty sure the action is all right and not too low (I measured using a tape, the gap from the fretboard to the 1st string at fret 1 is just sigh of the 4/32th of an inch). I do not know what a "pullof" is yet.
I think I am doing something wrong while playing that second measure ( 1 0 0 0 ). Do you have any suggestions for me? How will you play a 1000? I mean, how will you move from that 1 to the 0 ?
Or is it because I am playing very slowly that I can hear the buzz and if some expert played it fast enough, it wont be audible?
Thanks. One of the bad things about learning on your own is, there is nobody to pat your back, when after trying something for the 90th time, you finally get it right. So, thanks for your encouragement.
a)i have no idea about this.you have to strum upstrokes equally as downstrokes, let someone else here help you on this one.
b)i think youre doing pull offs without realising it.that may be because you pick the '1' perfectly, but you play the'0' not after taking off the finger completely but during the take off.So youre pulling off from fret 1 to fret 0(open string) which will sound different.I will advice you to play with the help of a metronome,if you havent, download a metronome app to your phone, and practice with low bpm, gradually increasing the bpm.
If you can, hire a tutor/goto classes.Usually theyll have one class(1-2 hours) in a week or so.Usually classes will be at late evenings, when i went to my classes there were all those busy 'office guys' and even policemen whom after their busy jobs, found time for guitar-ing.Youll make new friends and you can have a combined study plus some healthy competition. That will be best for you, better than refering some books from home and You ll learn much faster plus the theory, and hopefully you can teach Us some lessons and tips youve learned
^1 0 0 0 means play the string pressed once & then open 3 times.
pull-off is reverse of hammer-on... for e.g: 4H3: press the string on 4Fret & 3Fret..strike the string and release 3Fret finger
I'd like to know how MotherJane's guitarist makes those Veena (I think) like sounds. I suspect that he uses a Synth engine or a Harmonic Octave Generator alongwith an Octaver but I am not sure. I've searched everywhere, but I am unable to get any info about what gear or patches they use. Can anyone here who has some exp help out?
I think he(Baiju Dharmajan) uses slide guitar(bottleneck)File:Fingandslide.jpg - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia because thats how it sounds like(not sure)(listen to jeff beck-nadia intro) and he likes carnatic music .Also according to wiki his gear is-
'Epiphone prophecy,Gibson STUDIO,Yamaha Compass series Acoustic guitar, epiphone sst classic 2.0, DIGITECH GSP1101 and ART SGX 2000 PRE AMP. Dharmajan used a Ibanez RG320 to record Insane Biography and Maktub'

The solo is where any one instrument takes the centerstage. For ex, a guitar solo, where the vocalist may or may not sing backing.
Chorus is a part of the song where multiple vocalists sing together, therefore giving a chorus effect.
Verse is a sentence in lyrics.
Lick and riffs are harder to define since they are sometimes used interchangeably. The way I see it, a lick is a non repetitive pattern played during random intervals of the song, while the riff may or may not be repetitive but is usually used in context with rhythm than lead.
no idea mate, its a strange instrument,IMO,if youre interested in wind instruments, check out mouth organ/harmonica/harp..Easy and plenty of online tutors, just my suggestion.
yes, i agree its a strange instrument. i couldn't find much info online too (tutoring lessons). nevertheless, i hope i would be able to find someone to teach here. there used to be aired some show on MTV sometime back where bands & musicians used to perform for auditioning. i didn't use to see the show, but just while browsing through once my eyes fell on a young lone chap who was a bagpipe-performer. thence i felt there may be dearth of such people, but certainly they are not non-existent. i fancy learning quite some of them, like santoor, chinese flute, harmonica, drums, etc., too much to wish for, but want to start off with the bagpipe

nice find! thanks a lot!
no, i haven't searched youtube yet (moreover, i don't have the instrument), but certainly i think youtube will have lots of videos on the subject.
To be frank, I have been always allured by the technology. And part of the motivation will be that. Planning to learn this sweet thing with dedication.
Yeah, I'd buy another good amp but for the testing purpose I am getting G01. It will be quite handy at night when everyone else is sleeping and I can just plug my earphones.
Thinking of buying Fender Mustang 2 40 watt AMP later.

Initially planned to buy it from bajaoo.com but they raised the price of white color guitar to 32k after 2 days when I inquired about that. Black version is close to 28k.
Not going to buy anything from that site in lifetime and never going to recommend it to anyone.
a. Electronic Tuner - you can get Korg 5000 bucks one or Cherub 500 bucks one!
b. Hard Case (protect that guitar, forget gig bag)
I am assuming you are learning on your own, and do not have a teacher -
c. Open Youtube, download all of Freepower's videos (tutorials+exercises+whatever he says)
d. Register at UG, talk to folks, talk to FP, get help at Technique thread.
e. Check all (most?) Guitar Learning sites on the net (or at least as much as you can), take every advice (even Justin Sandercoe's) with a pinch of salt - adapt those to meet your needs, don't just blindly try to follow - get your technique corrected at UG.
As you visit more and more sites, you will feel overwhelmed with so much advice - but you will also get an insight into which piece of advice might be for you and which might not be! For eg - Sandercoe says, "Keep the axe vertical /completely parallel to your body" - while this may work for an electric, it often does not for a fat-a55ed acoustic...Then there's one more guy, I think, Brian or someone, who gives outright bad info at times - only if you check multiple videos will you be able to determine for yourself what's good worth following and what's not!
f. For the first month, or at least till your fingers bleed, practice 2-3 hours every day (at different times) - do this till you can fret any string with any finger and it does not hurt, no matter how long you do it. Once it stops hurting, you may bring down your practice time to an hour a day if other matters take priority (I know you are a working guy and its not always possible for us to put in 3 hours daily) - Forget all that "10-15 mins everyday" crap.
Initially for first two days, you wont be able to play at stretch, your fingers will demand rest every 5 minutes. Thats normal, dont worry. [True for high-action acoustic steel, might vary for electric]
In my case, I used to wake up real early, "do the guitar" an hour, then in the evening, do it an hour and again at night before sleeping, do it an hour. It stopped hurting after 10 days.
g. Buy/borrow some Music Theory book, read it whenever you can or feel like, dedicate time to it, if you like what you are reading. [It blew my mind, when I started reading about it, so I kept at it..another friend also started but lost interest and stopped - so really up to you] [Complete Idiot's guide is a good one, I feel]
h. Pay attention to your left hand wrist (assuming you are a righty-guy], keep it straight (always for strings 1-3, and as much as possible for 4-6 - straighten the guitar (towards the ceiling) if required).
i. Pay attention to your left hand fingers (curl, curl, curl)
j. Pay attention to your left hand pinky - build strength in it - practice Sandercoe's or FP's stretching exercises.
k. Pay attention to your right hand - swing it, dont swing the wrist.
l. Don't anchor your right hand - anchor = BAD! Hold pick in whichever way feels most comfortable to you - don't listen to anyone on this point (well of course, don't hold it with your pinky and ring finger!)
m. Ring notes clearly, don't do it half-heartedly or be satisfied if you miss a note or bend one out of tune or play a Eminor11 between 2 chords (you'll get this eventually ). Aim for the moon, so you'll land in the stars [or else you will be stuck forever in guitar hell ]
n. Do two things whenever you feel like playing - 1. Tune before playing. 2. Clean after playing (strings, fretboard, body everything).
o. Try training your ear - there are software trainers available for free. Try to sound out a note you hear around you on your guitar. I hear the 5 am clock chime (the tune that plays before the "dong") everyday when I am playing and try to sound that note on my guitar...have been trying for two weeks without success - but I know it will happen one day [unless I am tone-deaf, hopefully I am not!])
p. Don't depend too much on a metronome - yes, use it when you want to keep rhythm, but get that rhythm "inside you" as soon as you can, and stop using the metronome.
And finally, the most important thing you need to learn is
q. Watch Shawn Lane once a week for inspiration ???? Download Slash Max sessions video for inspiration??? Also dream of playing like Batio ??? Ya ya you get the drift!
Remember, God only came down once as a shredder (as Shawn Lane), so none of us can ever play like Him - but we can always play like ourselves, if you know what I mean!
Best of luck!
PS: If you need fingerprinting to be done for any purpose (visa/NASSCOM card), don't play till those are done.
--------------
I have been at it for a month now - I still can't change chords, but NO WORRIES - one day, I will!
yes it happens at 1 chord per minute speed for me right now, all I have to do is increase the speed!
To be honest, I am really finding it difficult holding the A and G (4-finger) chord. Let's see - all I can do is keep at it and pray Lord Hendrix showers some of his blessings on me
Best way to learn to shift chords is first place your fingers one at a time and then strum to ensure that all fingers are firmly in place, then, release all your fingers widely and then replace them and strum. Continue this till you get a hang of it then continue the same for another chord.
Once you get a hang of this, you can continue the same while alternating between two chords which you want to practice.
Nice piece of advice Mario,i see youve learned alot in a short time.good luck to you
Well i have decided to take a break from 'guitaring',starting from Q3 this year for 3-4 years. Will start learning from note 1,then.Good to see new aspiring guitarists emerging out, here.I guess 'God' maintains a balance among guitarists, kicking out me from the scene, when someone new comes in.Anyways ive promised myself that i'll start all over again 'nice and slow' after 3-4 years.
@Nanducob: See the sad part is I have learnt nothing.. Sure I know what the Circle of Fifths means and how the shape of Am chord is, but can I PLAY it? Noooooooooooooooooooooooo. :'(
Why 3-4 years? Now, man, do it NOW! You need to watch some "Lane" to ignite the fire again
^hehe dont worry,as i 'learned' from bits, here and there it took me 2 years to understand that there were certain notes in the neck like e,f, f#,g..you know..and it took another 2 years to understand cof'ifths...so i decided not to waste my time learning myself..after 3 yrs i will go to a good tutor and learn from the beginning
I can read and understand books fast, but can't learn "playing" fast enough!
No good teachers here, all are "follow my way or the highway"!
To hell with them!

Instructors can be a******s, but know that an instructor can teach you faster than you can learn on your own. Its a necessary evil.
I hate them because all of them are teaching bollywood bullshit. So, be on a lookout for someone who is well versed in music theory and can play a wide variety of genres (except bollywood). Such instructors are the best.
One more thing, after tuning with the app, do a manual check to see if the strings are indeed in tune (5th fret technique). This is to rule out intonation problems that might be with your guitar.
Forget apps - buy an electronic tuner - cheap ones available at ~500 bucks.
Also try 5th fret method like Desmond said.
Don't go for pipes - your ears are probably not ready for them yet.
For metronome, you can get an app or software metronome - but verify its "timeliness" before you start using it. [Yes, not all software metronomes are accurate]
The best metronome is your feet. And your head! Also, you can practice "beat keeping" anywhere, anytime - just try tapping your feet or clapping your hands lightly every time you hear any piece of music. This will help you get rid of any dependency on a metronome. Once you master this, you will see identifying quarter/eighth/half notes is piece of cake!
-----------
Edit: Just noticed the whammy on your axe! I am not sure but I have heard tuning whammy-s is a pita! Desmond, your thoughts?
That's a Vintage Fender tremolo, its not Floyd-Rose (or one of its derivatives). So tuning this one is not a problem. It will lose tuning faster though if you use the tremolo arm frequently. But, the advantage is that you can use different tunings without much trouble.
Tuning a Floyd-Rose is a pain in the ass. But, once tuned, the tuning can stay forever. No matter how much you bend the tremolo arm.
I was reading that thick string E note tuning. Where you first tune it by listening to an mp3 file for that tone or another instrument keys to match it. And then produce other tones using frets on the already tuned thick E string.
Getting the tone right merely by listening to a note is not easy to accomplish. I've been playing for so long yet I don't get it right all the time. It's better to use a tuner for 1 string and you can tune the rest using the 5th fret technique I mentioned earlier.
This is so that you don't ruin the tuning if your guitar intonation is incorrect. But, if its a new guitar, you can tune all strings using the tuner without any problems.
Well, it wont tune the guitar for you , it will only tell you the current tuning of each note. You will have to turn the tuners yourself in the end. DaTuner is more than enough to get your tuning going.
^^My vocal is very bad people will think a fox is crying.I think i will stick with the instruments only. I love piano, guitar & violin. There are few other instruments too but i dont know their name will post them as soon as i find them.I think Indian music is tough to learn therefore i want to try from simple first. What do you suggest?
Btw please tell me what is your specialty i mean what do you play?
Ok can you give me some good links.I know you cannot learn everything from youtube but i just want to be a music literate.I mean i should be able to read abcd and construct a sentence of my own means make some original tunes of my own.
For a start a harmonica will do. btw anybody plays bagpipe i love that instrument too.
I found gstrings to very simple as compared to DaTuner which has lots of settings
yes E2 is the thick wire string.we call it Low E and the E4 is thin string High E

I think you are talking about composition and arrangement.
You need some solid music theory knowledge and either some playing ability (cheap keyboard) or super-duper visualizing-the-music-in-your-head skill to be able to "compose". It will take time unless you are Beethoven/Mozart/Chopin etc!
Read some music theory book, if you don't have any specific instrument choice (you want to be more of a composer than a musician), then buy a cheap keyboard so that you can "hear" what you will be reading. (or else it will just be like reading gibberish)
Another important skill you would need is transcribing - the more you can transcribe accurately, the better ( or at least, the less worse) will be your compositions! Again, this will not come in a day/week/month/year.
Keep doing it and it will happen. Youtube will teach you instrument-playing; for "music literacy", join some music/instrument forums and read up on their music theory or composition threads. One very good place to go would be UG's forums.
Forum member Ghormanas plays bagpipes! Or was he learning? Dont remember exactly...
You following Steve Krenz stuff by any chance? If so, initial parts (absolute basics) are ok, later parts are crap! Later parts are more like mugging up the equation without knowing the formula.
The more you advance, try to read some theory and relate your playing stuff with that theory -- of course, this does not apply if you are just "guitar"-ing to impress the fairer sex!

If your intonation is not correct, picking the 12th fret will not be a E3, but rather a little sharp or flat. Therefore, even if your guitar is tuned correctly on the open frets, as you play on the higher frets, your chords will begin to suck.

Any one here tried adjusting the truss rod on the accoustic guitar ?
So I took out my guitar after a long time & its bent forward. I fixed it a little today but everytime I turn the wrench, It feels it'll break.

I've turned it a little since yesterday & it is playable upto the 8th fret.
Now I can't rotate it clockwise anymore, it can go anticlockwise, but clockwise it is stuck.

General,I had the same problem when i had my acoustic and i think theres a limit in the truss rod, after it doesnt work clockwise but we can loosen in anticlockwise.Adjusting the bridge did work for me,then. So what about 9 to 20 frets? Is it unplayable because the string touches the frets causing buzz or is it the 1 to 8 frets that are causing the problem?(hope youve got what im saying)

That means the action is too high.Have u tightened the truss rod(clockwise) with out loosening the strings?if so remove the strings and see if there is any rotation left in clockwise direction.Be noted that the truss rod is used to straighten the neck(not to lower the action, even if it lowers a little action,it is not the 'remedy')Another thing to do is to lower the bridge(2 screws b/w high and low e on the bridge) slowly while checking for least possible minimal fret buzz(playable) on the first fret of all strings. If that didnt work remove the neck(4 screws) without removing the strings and see if the neck joint is parallel to the neck, try to adjust it.
3 things to note
1)check if the neck is straight
2)Adjust the bridge
3)Check the neck joint is parallel to neck.
I think I've adjusted the truss rod to max possible in the clockwise direction. I haven't yet tried lowering the bridge, Will do this later. Lowering the saddle might be some good.
The neck is not removable so can't do anything about that.
Thanks for all your help.

youre welcome.
So people, always buy a guitar with removable neck,(so that if something happens you could always replace the neck),unless its a Joe Satriani guitar
hey, truss is used to straighten the neck.Usually its the acoustic steel string guitars which have truss rod in it and acoustic classical/nylon string guitars which have no truss rods.A truss rod is a must for acoustic steel string guitar, if theres no truss rod,the neck will warp easily.dont know if we can decrease the action, the guitar would be unplayable.
Maybe adjusting the bridge and neck will reduce it.
Hey Desmond you asked about the technique used by Baiju[motherjane guitarist]Here's one live video of him,his rendition of mile sur mera tumhara.I think he uses quick hammerons and slides and sometimes tremelo.btw The song starts @ 2:30
The guitars's body resembles an Ibanez prestige 1570?[not sure because of the fret inlays and the input for the cord is below the knobs as in the 'S' series][.the amp is a Laney lionheart l50h head.
here's an interview !
A rendezvous with the 'God of Small Strings' - Baiju Dharmajan - CoolAge
I asked people on the UG forums they say that its simple distortion along with the tremolo bar, nothing special about it. The scale that he uses (probably a Harmonic minor) gives it an Indian flavour.
Look inside soundhole towards where the neck attaches to the body - if there's a hole there, thats where your truss adjustment rod goes in, else its near headstock.
I'd say that you learn shifting first. Learn by shifting from A to D to E till you are confident that you can shift between these subconsciously. Then go for G to C to D (i.e One step lower than the previous progression).
Depends upon the music you are trying to play. If you are playing Jazz, try add9 or Maj7 chords. For blues, try 7th Chords. For Rock/Metal go for 5th Chords (aka Power chords). There is no fixed definition for best sounding chord.
Minor chords are soft & sometimes sad
Major chords are Happy
Major 7th chords are sweet,dreamy,bright & jazzy
Minor 7th chords are Mellow & jazzy
7th chords are Twangy, bluesy and funky sounding (like A7,B7 etc)
^We have to be careful with high e string since it is more prone to breaking

Does it sound right ? I've broken the high E string twice. now I have 2 spare sets of strings without the high E, the shop guys don't sell individual strings.

G,B & High E are more susceptible to breaking....the two Big Boss strings E & A are ironman strings (very rare they will break)
and to protect strings from rusting always clean the strings after done playing coz u know the sweat from hands has salt in it and corrosion occurs from that point
how many of u can play pentatonic scale?
Not sure if this is the right place to ask.
Can you guys suggest bands similar to - Three days grace / Linkin Park / Story of the Year / Evanescence ... that genre, not really much difficult to play & tuning in drop D or Drop Db or standard tuning.

Hey guys..
I changed the G-String and started tuning but
I can still hear the open G string buzz (when the string touches fret line)...
found that the G-String is touching the 2nd fret line...what is the problem?
Along with all the other advice, check the fret itself where you get the buzz... is it poking out a bit too much compared to the others? Or is it too worn down?
In any case, your last resort is also your best --> visit local luthier.

Notes:
-Use only the top two strings.
-All the 0's are palm muted (the string is slightly touched with the palm at the bridge).
-The fretted notes are not palm muted.
Granada is pretty good. You can get it at their store as well. But I am no expert, you should take someone who knows about violins to the store with you.

I first warn them that they might not like what I am going to play. Then I proceed to play my improvisation on the Pentatonic or Harmonic Minor (my favorite) scale.
Usually I ask the guests only to suggest a song. And most suggest some filmy songs which in the most cases might have been already performed in some concert, thereby making it easy for me.
If the guest is someone knowledgeable in music, then there is a lot to choose from Bach, Mozart, Beethoven etc. When it comes to guitar, scales some random chord progressions are always there .

It can be possible but requires a lot of work. Some shops do that but majority will try to fend off your request.
Personally, I do suggest against it. Not worth taking the risk.
I have never uploaded anything on the internet as yet. Most of my performances are in orchestras. Will upload some this coming weekend.
Had an old recording of the turkish march lying around. Created an account in sound cloud and uploaded it. Bear with me for the off-rhythm notes.

I have done nothing much for the tone. Only kept the Gain around 50% and kept the Tone around 75%, used the neck pickup for a fat sound. Tuning is dropped Db.
I did another upload now of Le Coucou - *soundcloud.com/vigneshb/daquin-pierre-barbizet-1981-le
There are a few errors though in the timings . I used to play it much better earlier, now my fingers are rebelling against me.
These days, pretty rarely. Earlier I used to spend around 8-10 hours per day.
Have to start practicing again. But can't spend much time due to studies etc.

That's a Roland GW7. I don't have a pitch pedal. I have a pitch band(a handle like thing for bending). But wasn't able to use it during the video as I was recording with my left hand
Your Guitar cover is also very good. Nice job there
Producing music. Like what people do to make movie soundtracks, etc. Its called music direction in bollywood.
Basically it means you use a studio setup to make music. However, you can also use DAWs to make studio quality soundtracks at home. Some DAWS are LMMS, Ableton Live and FL Studio. LMMS is free and relatively easier to use
Having a DAW is like having a whole recording studio in your house. You can use plugins and effects just like in a studio and create high quality soundtracks.
This is what I made while fooling around with LMMS.

If anyone of you is interested in giving this a go, you can get LMMS from here : *lmms.sourceforge.net/

Edit : Did the first solo of Comfortably Numb today. Its not very perfect but just enough to understand how to play it. Will cover the second solo later.

Checked out your "Comfortably Numb" solo. Its nice.
Try improving the bends on the 15th fret (around 0:05 & 0:13) ,, don't bring them back.
One week & I'm still having lots of problems on the 2nd solo of "Comfortably Numb".
Meanwhile also trying the first solo on "November Rain" -by Guns n Roses. Its not that fast but the bends on it are a bit difficult to make them sound exact. The 2nd one on it is impossible for me.
Thanks, but I am not very happy with it. I am finding the transitioning from the 15th fret bend to the three strings on the 14th fret to be tricky, probably practice will fix that.
The second solo is pretty long, I don't think I can play it exactly as it is and perhaps I will have to improvise a lot. You will need to have a good memory and patience but it will be worth it in the end.
GnR solos are pretty easy actuallly but the bends can be pretty tricky in any song. I can do full half bends but full bends are very stressful on my fingers (I use 10-54 gauge steel strings).
I tried using Reaper.
With LMMS, can I add effects on the guitar (distortion, reverb .. all those ?). Basically I want to plug the guitar into the pc
There's a slight delay though with the guitar now on Reaper. May be I need Asio drivers.

Yes, but I don't think it will be very polished. Because effectively you would be recording clean and then adding effects over it. But it is best suited for creating MIDI based soundtracks.
If you want to record guitar, its better if you get something like Line 6 POD Studio USB recording interface. Couple this with POD Farm and you will virtually never run out of effects, amp cabinets, ,amp models or stompboxes.
The delay you speak of is because the audio drivers that you use for recording are not very efficient for recording in realtime because of some inefficient AD conversion algorithm. Yes, ASIO would resolve the lag, but it is licensed by Steinberg. There is a free but experimental alternative at ASIO4ALL - Universal ASIO Driver but I haven't tried it yet. This should effectively remove any lag.
As of now, the most efficient method would be to use the POD Studio I mentioned above.
Edit : The ASIO driver available on asio4all needs to be compiled with Audacity in order to be used. There is no workaround that I know of. Also, I am not sure if there are any DAWs that support it.

No, I don't want to record anything. Not playing clean either, I only want to be able to play guitar & simulate amp as I play using (some VST plugin may be ?).
I already have RP255 & it works fine but I want to get it out of the picture.
I meant Asio4All drivers only. they worked fine before on windows XP though I don't remember setting them up. Had tried Kristal & Amplitube trials. I'll see more how Reaper goes today when I get home.
The Line 6 Pod Studio has a audio out which you can attach to any amp. So, you set up your effects chain on your PC using POD Farm and get output on your amp.
Also, POD Farm is way better than most hardware multi effects pedals since you have an option for a huge library of effects and amp models. Many professionals use it as well.
I saw the Line 6 Pod & it sure looks nice. But I was not planning to buy anything at the moment so may be someday in future.
I tried Free Amp by fretted synth plugin in Reaper yesterday & I can get a good distortion with the default drivers but with some latency. The Asio4All drivers are a real problem in Windows 7, so no success so far.
Have you recorded anything in Reaper? I have a lot about it. Even people from the Ultimate-Guitar forum recommend it.
The GX is available from Bajaao for around 6k. I think I till buy it next month.
Yeah, I tried recording on Reaper just for fun sometime back on Windows XP. It was easy to use / record for the basics + had tons of features I had no idea about. With all the free Amp Vst plugins it was real good. If I remember, it records in .wav format.
The metal riff sounds cool. I never got into playing metal. But now I'm looking at some Youtube lessons.
Take a try at the song "Metallingus" by Alter Bridge. I been playing it a bit, It should be easy for you.
couple of questions on acoustic guitar. Q1. Which oil/cleaner u use for fretboard cleaning/polishing?
Q2. How much slack do I have to leave while changing strings?
Q3. How much thick (mm) pick u use?
couple of questions on acoustic guitar. Q1. Which oil/cleaner u use for fretboard cleaning/polishing?
Q2. How much slack do I have to leave while changing strings?
Q3. How much thick (mm) pick u use?
1. None
2. Define slack. If you mean how loose, there us no such thing since the tension will be the same when you do a standard tuning. Depends upon the string though.
3. I used to use Planetwaves JS signature Thin but those break frequenty, so I moved up to JS Medium. Don't remember the thickness exactly.
IMO for acoustic guitar the pick shouldnt be too heavy so anything around .5mm will be good for strumming/picking,it also has to match your preference. So buy 4-5 light to medium picks and see what suits you, best.I use planet waves black ice 1.10mm heavy picks and rarely pw 1.0 med/heavy.
Yes, you can. I don't start wrapping it from one end, I pass it as much as required beyond the hole in the tuner and then I tighten it, letting the rest of the string hang out.
So do you know anyone playing keyboards in this forum?
And no, the chord shape doesn't change, since it is just like a transpose... Dropping the scale by 1 or two tones...Chords will remain same in a different base scale.. as far as I know...
The sound of the chord changes based on the scale
Check out this page, I think you'll understand a little better than what I said Transpose
What sort of tuning is that? Dropped D is DADGBE i.e. a standard tuning with the low E string detuned one whole step and the rest of the strings remain the same. This tuning is mainly good for playing power chords (5th Chords) on the top three strings.
If you are speaking of DGCFAD, this is D standard i.e. the entire E standard tuning dropped a whole step. in this case, the open G major pattern will not be a G major chord, but it will be F major. Therefore, if you want to play a G major chord in this tuning, you will have to play a barre chord with the barre on the 5th fret. Similarly, Am open pattern will become Gm and you will have to play Am with a barre on the 7th fret.
Therefore, in this manner, the chords will be :
Code:
d|-0----3----5----7----2
A|-1----3----5----7----3
F|-2----0----6----7----4
C|-2----0----7----9----4
G|-0----2----7----9----2
D|-x----3----5----7----X
Gm F G Am Am
And so forth.
PS: If you know the notes comprising the chords, you can make them up irrespective of the tunings.

I mean i have seen two scale pattern in minor pentatonic scale (one of them i listed above) and then guitarist use the same pattern all over fret (e.g: the start from fret 2 and continue it till the end of the fret without breaking)
there some slight change in the extension but it sounds the same when played in one area of fret

No. A hammer on goes up the scale while a pull off goes down. Hammer ons and pull offs are used to save energy while playing fast. So, instead of picking every note you can hammer on or pull off notes on the same string.
It wouldn't make sense to use them interchangeably.

Sorry, i was on phone and did not read it well enough.
They do sound similar but they are not the same. However, there are no rules when you should favour one over the other. But there are factors when it is necessary to use the one over the other. If the next note you are going to play is too far away for your finger to reach, you should use a slide otherwise you can use a simple hammer on. But this is just a general example. Other factors could be the pattern of the scale. If you are playing any scale in a caged fashion, using hammer ons make sense since all the notes are easily reachable. However, if you are using the horizontal pattern or a 3-notes-per-string pattern, which could extend all over the neck, it is impossible to reach the next notes which could be very far apart. In such a case, it is more appropriate to use a slide.
Then again, there are no rules and you can just use which ever suits your artistic style.
Similarly, you can use bends as an alternative to hammer ons or slides.
PS: Note that Hammer ons, slides and bends have different attacks and you could use discretion while using them.
guys can u suggest a good electric guitar company?
i want a learner guitar.
no im not going to buy an accoustic

yes yamaha pacificas are vfm..where did you find that site,is it reliable?
For acoustic check for local shops, the cheapest yamaha acoustic should be around 6-7 k.If you are in Bangalore you can check them at Furtados or @ brigade road there are couple of shops.
Also check out the indian brand 'GB&A',They are much cheaper and not bad.
But your best bet would be to opt for a second hand guitar.look for Ibanez gio/grgs,squier strats, ltds, epiphone les pauls, jackon has some entry level too and dont expect much.If you want 'near studio quality' equipment look no further than Ibanez RGs,they will last longer.
...
Music taste also matters. If you are in to bolywoood music/regional/Po(o)p then acoustic is suited. For Rock/Metal hmmm..

Yamaha music store is 15minutes walk from my house in Indiranagar So I will go there.
Online the pacific costs 10k but I also saw a brand called Ahston, which is fairly new Australian company. Their electrics are cheaper, 7-8k
epiphone les paul is what I desire but it costs around 12k so kind of a no no for me atm. I'm looking for something cheaper than the yamaha but options are starting to look grim.
My friends have told me that electrics are easier to learn and light on the fingers.

People say that electric is easier only because the strings are little slack in electric,For me both acoustic and electric have their own difficulties.
Also,I told this before
better instruments=easier to play, easier to learn.
..
So if you are going to take guitar seriously, save some up,no hurry.
Also if you are buying electric you need to invest on an amplifier too(min 4-6 k) decent 10k above.
I always suggest people to learn acoustic before going for electric so that you can learn the concepts before taking a step further. In acoustic guitar, you don't need to learn advanced techniques such as muting which is very necessary while playing electric guitar. Though the muting is mostly if you are using overdrive but then again, what is the point of using an electric guitar if you don't use overdrive. Your fingers will get f***ed either way, consider yourself warned.
I think that Pacifica is more than enough for you to learn though I think its tone is not very good. It would be better if you can get a Squier Bullet Strat, it has better tone. If you can up your budget by around 3k, it is better to get an Ibanez GRG170DX or a Squier Affinity Fat Strat.

As for you question about introductory lessons, Yes. Its is made for those who have never even touched a guitar before. I certainly have but never played or learnt.
it teaches you how to
hold a guitar
hold a pick
attach a strap
frets
strings
finger placement
beginner techniques
lead
chords
bass
strumming
shifting
and many more techniques in the form of video lessons, playable practice lessons, practice guitacade mini games, riff repeater in Learn a song mode
The game also offers you a development path as to what you wanna learn, Lead, rhythm or Bass

After thinking a lot, I have concluded that Rocksmith is probably not worth the investment. Since I am more familiar with learning from tabs, I think I would be more comfortable doing so.
Muscle memory comes with time. I had posted a trick that I used to do earlier in this thread...
First hold a chord, strum, ensure that all your strings are fretted properly and none of them sound dull while stumming, then spread out your fingers, replace your fingers in the same chord position, rinse and repeat.
I know that this would get boring after sometime, therefore, in order to motivate yourself, look up chords for a song and practice those chords with the above exercise till you get reasonable good with it.
One easy song you can try is Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here.
slowing down might help the muscle memmory/transitioning from one chord to another, like practice in low bpms(with metronome/backing track)
increase bpm as you progress
btw how long have you been playing?

It's called a looper. Most multi effect pedals have it. It allows you to record a short piece of music and allows you to overdub. A good example is the Digitech RP255 with it's 20 second looper.
I got a one month free trial worth 16$ from bluesharmonica when i bought the harmonica.(trying to milk it lol)

But I can identify resonance. Therefore, if I can get the tuning right on any one string with a tuner, I can tune the rest by ear.
The main concept you need to know is beats. This is not the music theory "beats" but acoustics beats. When two sounds of similar (but not same) frequency is played together, you can hear the the resulting sound pulsates (called waxing and waning). The faster the pulsating, the more out of tune the strings are. Therefore, while tuning, you must fret the note you want on a string that is already tuned, play this and the string you want to tune together and compare the beats. Then you gradually adjust the string tension to reduce the beats until they are non-existent (resonance). This means that the string is now tuned. You can repeat these steps for the rest of the strings.
Edit : The same procedure can be used if you don't have a tuner. You can play a sound of say, the Low E string (E2, appx 82Hz) on your cellphone as a MP3 file or on your keyboard and you can use the same technique above to tune the strings.

I use this site to tune the guitar (or at-least one string).
play the open string and let it rung, then the vibration of the guitar & tuner syncs (not sure if its the right word)
Sounds nice, Well Done.
At first I thought it was one of the songs from "Maine Pyaar kiya".
These days learning to play "Crystallize" by Lindsey Stirling & "Dream On" by Aerosmith. Crystallize is easier than it looks but Dream On is giving me a difficult time.

^^ @Gollum.
I had plans to buy a Casio CTK model back some five years ago when I had just got my job. But it didn't happen then. Had visited Yamaha Music Square in Bangalore once and the keyboards there blew me away. Initially decided to buy a PSR I425, then made up my mind for PSR S550B.. S710.. S650 and finally S750. The hardest part was convincing Mom that I was not crazy to spent this much on a "silly keyboard" when I could have bought a decent bike with it. Thought of it as a one time investment.
I can play by ear any indian songs with little practice. Chord Progressions, both-handed playing, reading sheet music are things I need to learn..

Glad to see another pianist here. I started learning with Yamaha psr 223 in college. Even though it was dirt cheap at 6.5k, its grand piano sound was excellent. Currently im using Yamaha 323 which doesn't have the fineness of the piano sound of 223, but it has various features that make it worth it ( Midi in/out, pressure sensitive keys, multi track recording) . I also purely learned by watching others play on internet and finally i was able to play my favorite hindi song ever - Pehla nasha.
@Nanducob, thanks.
srkmish, nice rendition.. you got a lot of videos there.
@Gollum, I had tried my hands on a gibson guitar of my friend once. Slit my finger and that was the end of it. Guitar is too difficult compared fo keyboard.
I'm practising hard
I think the Lessons are bugged. They don't start immediately and I have to reinsert the cable to start them. Also, it lags while playing the lesson riffs and I have a hard time playing them correctly. However, there is no lag while learning songs. I got a 25% mastery on my first attempt of The Trooper. Still, it is a weird way of learning guitar.

what are your pc specs? you can try to lower the display settings.
have you updated the game yet?
lessons are important for learning what each shape of the note means.

I stopped giving a damn about the lessons, I already know most of it. I just play songs using the riff repeater and sometimes I play guirarcade.
I also found that I can use the RealTone cable with amp modelers such as POD Farm 2. However I am unable to record using it since ASIO4all only supports one input and output at a time.
Also,
I broke my first string today while tuning. Well they were getting pretty old now.
Can you give me a good suggestion for strings and brands. I like to do a lot of bending an vibrato on the guitar with E standard tuning.
PS: I have never replaced the strings on a guitar before, do you think I should just take my guitar to a music shop to get it done there?
Strings don't break until you abuse them. Could be because you over tightened the strings. Always loosen the strings before you tune them. Also, stop relying on electronic tuners.

i know how to use asio. i made a tutorial for it to use that with guitar rig.
but i dont use it. i only use rockamith and my guitr is more like a toy than an instrument.
No. Intonation is a different thing. It usually happens when you put new strings.
I don't know the proper technicalities of this, but I will explain it the way I see it.
Intonation means accuracy of pitch. The ability of your instrument to reproduce the correct pitch corresponding to the note that you play. That means, that when you play the 0th and 12th frets on the high E string, the notes would always be an E. That also means that the harmonics are correct as well (that is how I check the intonation of the guitar).
When the intonation goes off, that means that the guitar is not producing notes accurately. That is, when I play an open E on the high E string on a properly tuned guitar, the note will be an E, but if I play any consequent notes, they might either be slightly sharper of flat. That means, the higher up the fretboard you play, the more inaccurate your notes become and anything you play will sound like crap, regardless of how well you tuned your guitar. That means, if the note at 0 is an E, the note at 12 could be slightly sharper or flatter than E or in the worst case, F or D#.
This problem can usually be fixed by modifying the string length via the bridge saddles. If the notes are sharper, the string length is increased and if the notes are flatter, the string length is increased. But certain factors require you to go to the repairman.

The problem is that I put in 10-46 gauge ProSteel d'Addarios because I felt the old 9-42 ones were a little too slack. But I think the guitar does not support these without some adjustment. I have adjusted the bridge saddles as back as I can, but the intonation is still off. I will have to check with the repair guy to see if he can fix it somehow, or I will have to go back to the 9-42 gauge strings.

I used hybrid slinky on my pacifica
no issues, Check your fret board, see if its bent or what about the pickup height? I may be talking gibberish here.
Lol if you ve played a high end acoustic guitar you wouldnt have said that.I have played acoustic guitars up to range of 25k(Ovation).They have better craftsmanship, sound and they use better woods for making. After i played and find out how the low end guitars sounds like,i listened to my senior playing the Ovation. And it sounded like the guitar played in the soundtrack of a movie. But its sad that we had to pay more here in India for the stuff than others.
^^ Not as such like in an electric or semi-acoustic guitar. You might need an external pick up like this -

Why would gauge change the intonation? Seems like you have a different problem if the intonation is off. This isn't even a floating bridge to need adjustment of the bridge, but try adjusting the string lengths slightly using the screws on the bridge. Try it oput with the 1st string (high e) to know more clearly which way you should be adjusting, and it will help you adjust all of them. However, again I don't think a 1 guage difference in strings should cause intonation problems... make sure the neck itself isn't warping gradually.

That's the problem, I've adjusted the bridge saddles all the way back and the intonation still hasn't been fixed. The same problem is with all the strings. I asked about this on /r/guitar and they told me that a change in string gauge does affect intonation. That is why I need to check in with the luthier. Here's my post for reference : Is there any relation between string gauge and intonation? : Guitar

There won't be a time like that because there are lots and lots of things to learn about guitar and music, and if you feel something is stopping you, then its frustration and laziness.

Laney amps are great! Mine is just a practice amp with no extra effects, but the cleans and distortion sound very nice. Tony Iommi has been using them for ages.
Tell me, when you connect your guitar, does it autoselect the right effect to apply to the guitar for the song? Like if I want to play Satch Boogie, do I have to put the right effects into my effects processor, or does RockSmith add effects so that I don't need an effects processor?
All you have to do is to connect the cable to the USB.
Another trick I found out is that the RealTone cable can be used with POD Farm and you can use those effects too. Haven't been able to record with it though.

PC version sucks, its full of bugs. Tones drop to bare bone clean tone in th emiddle of the songs and spoil the whole experience.
I raised a ticket with ubisoft but the *******s can't even fix it.
I'm sticking to the PS3 for now as its got no bugs at all.

i am asuming that you havent played it enough given the issue with your guitar.
i will be donating my cable and game to my cousin.
i will keep using my ps3 for it.
Thanks,
I'm holding the guitar this way because I am sitting with my legs crossed. The guitar automatically shifts.
I'll be buying a strap this month end, Will be practicing while standing.

This seems to be the same axe. *www.ultimate-guitar.com/reviews/electric_guitars/dean/evo_xm/ . The review is a bit old but i think its a good guitar. Bajao.com is offering it for cheap i think. Street price could be 12-13k maybe. If only i could get it for 9.5k or so in a year and a half or so when i am somewhat good at the acoustic guitar i am trying to learn, then with a marshall mg10cd it seems to be a good combo. Lets see
I once inquired about fender classic vibe 50 white edition listed on their website. Bajaoo increased price of that the very next day citing reason that it is in more demand. Got mine from elsewhere then.
Yeah the intro not that difficult to just play , but I am having problems with timing when I play along specially at the one minute mark (before neon light...) where its kind of an extended intro
Use your index finger to barre and the remaining three fingers to hold the chord.
Theory:
The chord E is 022100 and F is 133211.
As you can see, the pattern for the chord is the same as E only that it is one fret higher. Since you are moving the 221 pattern of the E chord a fret higher, you have to compensate the open notes by holding your index finger across all the notes on the 1st fret and making the E chord like pattern using your remaining three fingers.
Similarly, you can hold any chord in a barre fashion.
Damn, Rocksmith really reminds you of how rusty you are. Don't touch a guitar in 2 years, start up Rocksmith and try something even basic as Pour Some Sugar on Me and be humiliated

I started with rhythm, because I don't know how to play any of these songs that come bundled. It's not hard, really, it's just hard getting used to the symbols in Rocksmith. I find it easier to play without looking at the screen. Finished the master thing with 2 crosses, now have to figure out where I went wrong.
haha....that is a seriously ...sort of ....bit of difficult. I'm a beginner so need to take baby steps and learn the easy stuff first along with trying new things.
For some reason my pacifica does not pick-up bends and hammer on's and hammer-offs too well.
I think I a les paul type of guitar will be better for this as the neck has a high gain humbucker

Are you sure it's the guitar and not your technique? Try playing unplugged- the notes you're hammering on or pulling off should sound as loud as when you pick them.
I switched to lead now. Why does that Learn a song percentage rise so slowly? I'm at 76% on the song, but 94% accuracy in Master mode Score attack. What does it want from me to go higher??? Stupid game!
Rocksmith sucks a little for not being a little flexible. It wants you to play something EXACTLY as it demands. B5 then C#5 it wants you to strum both chords/notes, whereas I just slide for quick changes... then it gives me a "Miss". Hammer-ons and pull-offs it recognises for me, but slides...

I think my guitar intonation might be a little off, so really high notes (12th to 19th frets) are being picked up as false sometimes. Will try with a different guitar at office to re-check.
Can someone explain to me why when I got 94% accuracy it didn't increase my overall score, but when I get 92 accuracy it adds some mastery score and then raised my score from like 76% to 97.4%. Is there any sense to this at all, or is it just random rubbish?
Yup, I was determined to see wtf was the reason to not be progressing in percentage wise, though 10 of those would be others in office also trying their hand.
I think it was always at max complexity after 70+ percent, because the notes are the same for the last 20 times I played it. It just refused to increase accuracy. Though I did lower video settings and stuff to get that last score, so maybe it was reduced lag or something.
The sound varies ,but you can emulate acoustic sounds on electric via effects, pedals etc. Some electric guitars have a built-in peizo pickup for acoustic sounds .Eg: Wes Borland's(Limpbizkit) guitar'Search it in youtube and find out how close it sounds to the acoustic
What is a good gauge for strings if i want to play in drop c (ACOUSTIC GUITAR),never cared about guages but brand until now ,but now i am playing low tuning songs mainly.
These are the guages.
Why would you want to play Dropped C in acoustic? I am not sure if you get strings of that gauge for acoustic but light-medium strings should do the trick. Anything less and the strings will become too slack, you won't be able to hear anything.

There are some nice songs in dropped tunings like slipknot - vermilion pt 2 (BF#BEG#C# ) ,Pearl Jam -'Oceans (DADF#AD) etc also some Micheal Hedges
I was thinking.of either .054 or .056 ,I thing .054 will do the trick without warping neck.
First learn to hold strings with the index finger without the rest of the fingers. At least try to make sure all the strings are getting fretted, if not at least the top 2 and the bottom 2. Adjust your finger till you find a position that you are comfortable with and are sure that all strings are getting fretted. Strum slowly to find which strings sound damp and adjust your finger till you find what works for you. After this proceed to hold the rest of the fingers.

Can't stand the stupidity of guys in music shops.I asked for .054 guitar strings for low tuning and the guy says that super light strings (.050) are best for low tuning I said that he is WRONG.he got no fact to backup.
There was another dumb girl who came to repair violin kept telling me that heavy /medium strings are hard to play;whatever, all I asked was medium/heavy strings for low tuning, seemed like she wanted to show off that she is the master.
Then she asked me if the strings are 440
I asked "440 what?" Frequency?
Silence.
Yes I knew it.its simple .thicker the string hard to play. less slack for low tuning, anyways thats better than asking if strings are 440.
What I meant was if I don't know about something I would be modest about it ,what is the relation between 440 and low tuning ,do I need to care about 440 or guage for low tuning

I also have very bad experience from 3 music shops in my place.will post at night

I find the minigame called castle chordead in rocksmith 2014 to be best for practice. it gives you a set of chords in random order in a fun way making you learn and memorize the chords as you play.
It's not that good to be honest. The chords are too randomized. There is no particular strum pattern. Also, you are concentrating so much on what's going on on the screen to observe what you are actually holding.
Rocksmith is good for practice but it teaches less about progressions and rhythm. And the strumming pattern is not at all there as far as I know. I find it now better to learn by playing a song.
Yeah. Chords are not just about the pattern of the fingers, but also how they sound because there are more than one way of holding any particular chord but they all sound the same each time. No point learning chords of you can't guess which chord it is just by listening.

That man is THE best guitar teacher on YouTube especially for beginners. He teaches everything from pop to metal and has been praised by Mark Knopfler, Steve Vai and Brian May.
It's a mix of all sort of difficulty. I will probably need more practice to get it all.
Strumming is easier while chord switching but fingerstyle adds another layer of difficulty.
Here's my cover of Pink Floyd - Is There Anybody Out There. I recorded on my acoustic, so volume is a bit low. Also I played it a bit fast than the song actually is, so made some mistakes.

Even after playing for so long, I still don't know how pinch harmonics work. They work when I am playing subconsciously as part of a song, but if I play consciously, its never audible.

am i hearing this right?
seriously dude?
like just touch the string lightly on top of the fret that's all and release as soon as you pick.
don't push down on the string.
I think you guys are mistaking Pinch Harmonics with Artificial Harmonics. Two different things.
- - - Updated - - -
I know what Artificial Harmonics are. You lightly touch the strings.
In Pinch Harmonics, you play a note and touch the string immediately after with the back of your thumb of your picking hand. Much harder than you think.

Hold the pick between your thumb and index finger in such a way that only a tiny bit of the tip of the pick is sticking out. Then, when you pick a string, lightly touch the string with the side of your thumb just as you pick it. Also, there are specific points between your pickups where the harmonics are much louder depending on the fret you're on. You need to experiment to find and remember those points as well. You can play them subconsciously because you're accidentally touching the string with your thumb while picking. With a lot of gain, they are not too difficult to produce.

...and skill comes from practice. If you watched that John Petrucci video that I posted (Rock Discipline), in that video Petrucci teaches several tough and mind numbing exercises. However, many later guitarists cite that video as a inspiration to become great.
So that's what you need to do. Hours upon hours of mind numbing exercises.

Yeah, practice is the really tough part. Whenever I sit down to practice, I do it for a few minutes and then start noodling around aimlessly. Learning songs is fun, but practice needs real dedication.
Its the opposite for me. I can get it right when I am just playing that, but during solos I miss it. I never can never get it in the Comfortably numb solo.

Yes. It starts off with a pinch harmonic on the 7th fret.
Evanescence - "Haunted" has an awesome solo with about 5 of those squealies. The solo is isn't that hard to play but getting those pinch harmonics right is challenging.
He turns mids all the way down while turning the highs and lows up. The arrangement looks like a trough on the EQ.
Such an arrangement will give a somewhat sharp attack. But the problem is that the guitar is a mid range instrument and scooping the mids means that the highs that you play will get mixed with the snare drums and cymbals and the lows will get mixed with the bass guitar and the kick drums. Playing live with such a tone would suck.
- - - Updated - - -
But then again, Dimebag probably knew how to work with scooped mids.

Also actual chords used are different but I don't remember all their names.
No. 1 is G major
No. 2 is G/C (I am not sure, but it could be a variation of C itself)
No. 3 is G/F#
No. 4 is G/B
No. 5 I am not sure but could be Em7 or something.
No. 6 is Dsus4, not D major.
No. 7 is Don't know this, but some form of C.
This is how I played on that soundcloud track I shared.
Try this out and see.

In case you are wondering, what the "/" are. These are called Slash chords.
This means that the lower parts of the chord are the same but a note is added to the bass part of the chord. In the above examples, the bottom three strings are the regular G major shape(XXX033). But the note next to the slash is added to one of the top three strings.
Therefore G/F# would become 2X0033 (or 220033 if you can hold it that way ).

Will play on your arrangement. Albeit, yours is easier. The main point learning the second one was to get the chord shift from Am to D fairly quickly. I used to fumble on that part.
For all fingerstyle stuff, this guy teaches so effectively
Yeah, not even gonna attempt that solo. One of the top 5 of all time imo. I can already play Symphony, quite easy but the difficult part is to get it clean and precise like the original.
You probably used a machine. Check intonation as well.
Compare the note on your E2 string with the harmonic on the 12th fret same string. If the harmonic is slightly off then you have an intonation problem. No amount of tuning would get your guitar in tune then.

is there any specific one which you can point me at ? Also since i literally dont know anything about guitar , should i just buy it online ? or go to shop to try before buying .
If you are new to guitars, get someone with experience to go to the shop with you.
However, beware that there are a lot of duplicate brands in the shops (as well as online) which don't sound very well.
GB&A make good guitars, however, I don't know any model in particular, you will have to ask the shopkeeper.
Other (probably better) brands are Pluto and Granada (again, don't know any models in particular, ask the shopkeeper which model comes in that budget).
Try to stick to these brands so that you don't bring home any duplicate branded ones. Also, I'd recommend that you get a model with a circular sound hole because those ones sound more rich.
Noob question - How is the guy playing guitar part whereas other sound is playing normally ? I do know about backing track , but they do not contain vocals right ?

The guy is performing the guitar part of the song . It looks like he has removed the original guitar part from the song and then used his guitar for the song .
edit - Am i making some sense now ?
edit 2 - how is this one for beginner - Electric Guitar,Givson spanish guitar, Buy Guitar online, musical instrument
Dude, if you want to buy an electric guitar, keep a budget of at least 11k. Below this all guitars have crap tone and low quality build. That Givson is a copy of a Gibson.

As for the video, its possible that the guy made his own backing track. He could also overdub the song.

Finally ordered Pluto Hw41 from bajaoo . Went to 2-3 musical store to test it . Also tested Yamaha F310 , Fender FA 100 , granada guitar and few stagg guitar . Found the pluto best for money , comfort and also liked the tune . Yamaha F310 was selling for 8.9k which was above my budget so didn't buy that .

Congrats! Just follow Justin's course and you will have a good base. It may seem a bit frustrating at first but be patient and enjoy yourself. Don't neglect the basics such as posture, holding the pick and always keeping your guitar in tune. All the best!

That sucks. You should call them up and confirm availability before ordering anything else. That Aria guitar seems to be an OK beginner's guitar. But it's an electric guitar so you will have to buy an amp too.

Actually they had one in stock . But the product was found to be defected on testing . Atleast thats what they claimed . Yeah Buying the aria guitar tomorrow , will get amp later .
yeah i am planning to buy soon , just not this month . Have watched Justin Beginner videos and he says that initially you can start learning the guitar without buying an amp .
Finally got my guitar . And yeah after playing it i really need to buy an amp . can anyone suggest cheap but good amp for beginner? Budget 3k. Also should i buy the tuner or should just get the app .

Look for a Laney LX 12 locally. It's around 5k on Bajaao, but I got it from a local shop for around 3800, 3 years back. If you have the RockSmith game, you can use the cable to play through your PC speakers with ASIO drivers.
No need to buy a tuner if you have an Android phone. Just get Smartchord app, it's free and has everything from tuner to metronome and chord diagrams.
After 1 week playing , i learned A , D and E chord . Can switch between them easily . Can switch about 60 times in a minute from one chord to another . Also completed Stage 1 of justin beginner lesson . Finger have stopped hurting . Tried Rocksmith , didn't liked it much . Can anyone tell how is my progression going ?

Pay more attention to strumming pattern too. You can play a whole good variation just by changing strumming pattern and keeping your fingers on only one chord.
Don't forget the right, the strumming one.
And if you need a quick reference for chords, check the website I developed in spare time

Broke D string . Should i replace only this or all of them ? Which string should i get ?
Also really need to buy an amp , Learning songs is getting boring as i am not able to differentiate much between E and A chord sound . Cant find good deal on beta aivin / Laney LX 12 , how is marshall MG10 ?

Marshall MG10 is also a good practice amp. [strike] [MENTION=1]Raaabo[/MENTION] has it I think.[/strike] [MENTION=1]Raaabo[/MENTION] has a Marshall MG 15 CD.
You will need ear practice to be able to differentiate chords based only on sound. Some chords have really subtle differences and not many people are able to tell them apart by sound alone.
On the electric guitar, you could change the only string that broke but try to ensure that it is of the same set that you have currently. Since it takes time for the tuning to set in, if you change all the strings you won't be able to play for about 1 week because the tuning will keep changing as the new strings stretch. You will have to keep tuning it everyday till the tuning settles. If you only replace the broken string, then you can at least play on the other unbroken strings till the new string gets set.
Also, beware about replacing the strings with higher or lower gauge strings since that is guaranteed to spoil the intonation. Once that happens, your guitar will never be in tune, even if you use a tuning machine.
I would suggest that if this is your first time, replace all the strings but remember what gauge you are putting on so that next time you break a string, you will know which gauge set you have and replace accordingly.

thankyou . I already replaced all the string with D'addario EXL 120 . There was buzzing sound in low E string for 2 days but its gone now . Without amp its very hard to differentiate the chord sound ( atleast for me) . Buying Amp this week hopefully .

I dont know if its me but the new d'addario strings are super bright on my Epiphone lpsp2

yup I am done with all the basic 8 chords . Can switch between them easily . Have already learned 3-5 songs ( three little bird , chasing cars easy version , Mad world etc) . Also when is the good time to start learning power chords ?
Just few months more to play Green days song , cant wait

That's cool. I remember learning chasing cars and mad world too There are two versions of mad world (gary jules). One with chords and another with fingerstyle.
Power chords are easy. You can start anytime. Next milestone for you will be barre chords.

yeah i learned gary jules chord version with simple D-DU-U-D strumming , it feels so good to play it . Also learned "how to save a life" by Fray . Just started learning barre chords . Let see how it goes .

I am just a newbie , though desmond , faun , gollum , nanducop , bikramjitkar are probably the only one here who play guitar regularly .
I play everyday thanks to rocksmith
plus I do finger practice exercises everyday before going to work. for some strange reason my typing spree has also improved lol
That depends on the song. But, normally. I just pick bottom 3-4 for few songs.
It's not about strumming all strings. Listen with you ears and see that it should sound melodious, not a harsh cacophony, and closer to the song which you are playing (if you are). And the force with which you strum matters too. There are song where few strokes are loud and others in between a bit mellow.

If you are a beginner, don't worry about what strings you strum. Its more important how you hold the chords and that all the strings that you have fret sound proper.
That being said, there are specific strings that are "not included" in some chords (ex. in the D chord, the low E string is not supposed to be played). However, you could get to these once you get familiar with holding the chord patterns first.

Thanks . I have learned all open chord and can switch between them easily ( 60+ change per minute for each pair) . Also i am done with 7th dominant chord (C7,B7 etc) . Before starting barre chord , i want to improve my strumming as changing chord and playing simple 4 down strum is getting very boring . Really want to try rocksmith but cant get the damn cable anywhere in india .

Rocksmith wont teach your strumming patterns. Use youtube for that. Just by changing strumming and the dynamics of that, you can create a lot of variety with just one chord.

Since you are following Justin's method, I suggest you go to the songs section and start learning some beginner's songs. He has many tutorials where he teaches both the simple way and proper way of strumming so you can pick up some tips from those. Also, listen carefully to songs and just try to follow the rhythm by muting the strings with your left hand (gently grip the neck so that your fingers touch all the strings but not hard enough to play any notes) and try strumming along. Don't get too caught up with "strumming patterns", as long as it sounds good and close enough. Rocksmith won't teach you how to strum, it's more suited for electric guitar and playing the right notes.

Yeah i know that rocksmith wont teach me strumming . Just wanted to play some punk rock songs ( Green day) . I have learned 7-8 songs till now like Back to december , Mad world , Three little birds , how to save a life etc with easy strumming . Since i have an electric guitar i dont get that feel of acoustic playing and justin teach most of the song with the acoustic guitar . So playing this song with simple strumming feels more like changing chords . So i am now working on the strumming pattern before moving on . can you guys link me to a video that teaches some good strumming for beginners ?

Rocksmith is great for practice but you will have to figure out your own flow with songs.
I have no problem with strumming patterns. I feel it all depends on the song that you are playing.
I almost never strum in the same direction.
However, I change the genre of songs every month/fortnight so that I dont get comfortable with a specific style of song list.
This has helped me improve a lot. and made many difficult songs easy to play.
Bachsmith helped me take care of accidental mutes
string skip saloon minigame helped me pick any string without looking at string.
I tried the first riff (starts with D-12, B-15, G-14, G-12, E-15, G-14, E-14). It's easy but I don't usually play solos. Not the fast ones. Not particularly good at that. Can you post the youtube tutorial, I will try.
I play more rhythm guitar stuff posted in above videos. Mainly chords and strumming. Recently trying hands at fingerstyle.

If by live you mean the "Hell Freezes Over" event, then yes that one is awesome. You should listen to the intro piece in that version. I even partially covered it sometime back.
Its not very polished since I learned it in about 2-3 hours. Also, I am not left handed, I forgot to set the laptop camera to mirror image the video.
Guitar Pro is a application that allows you to create and playback tabs. Very useful tool for learning songs, etc. Almost everything that I learned I learned using Guitar Pro.
You can download Guitar Pro tabs from the Ultimate-Guitar site as well.
More info: Guitar Pro 6 - Tablature software for guitar, bass, and other fretted instruments

yeah, I am going to start this now with my Epiphone lpsp2
Will keep the yamaha for pick. Also gonna change to polarity of my DiMarzio pickup as it is right now very heavy.
Marshall is good if you play on drive or distortion. Fender is good for cleans though I an not sure about the drive on the Mustang. The rest are modeling amps I think but don't know much about them.

The Marshall would be good then. However, the Marshall only has plain drive, you will have to make your own effects chain if you want additional effects.
However, If you want some effects, then consider the Peavey or the Roland multi-effects amps.
Bought an Alesis DM6 electronic drum kit for around 27k a couple of days back. Always wanted to play drums but couldn't due to lack of space and money lol. So far, have learnt a couple of basic 4x4 beats and trying to learn some fills, but the hand-feet co-ordination while keeping time is killing me!

Lol, thanks. I have posted in this thread before, though. Have been playing guitar for 5-6 years now. My gear - Cort KX1Q guitar, Laney LX12 amp and Boss MT2 Metal Zone distortion pedal. Getting into drums now.

From what I know, Metal Zone has a pretty weird eq. However, people say that you can even get Hendrix or Santana tones out of it if you know how to tweak it.
The Orange Micro Terror is a hybrid tube amp. That means that the preamp is tube and the power amp is solid state. The Roland Cube 40 is a fully solid state amp. Therefore, the Orange will have better tone but no effects, therefore you will have to rely on external pedals. The Roland Cube has built in effects and amp models.
The question therefore really is whether you value tone or effects. If you are looking for crisp tone, then get Orange otherwise get Roland.
Also note that the Micro Terror is just an amp head the you will have to invest in a speaker cabinet as well. You can try to look for second hand cabinets in your city if you are on a budget or you could get some carpenter to build one for you with a good speaker if you know what you are doing.
Its great. There are so many cool covers of it on youtube.
Sure try learning it. I been practising it for quite some time but still can't get it without mistakes or making it sound as good but it feels nice to play.
Heard of Crystallize ? Its on violin but still fun to play on guitar.
Look for Calor amps. Its a company founded by one guy in Mumbai and he sells hand made tube amps and heads. Really high quality stuff. But price is also some what expensive.
But then you have to shell out a bit if you want high quality stuff.

imo, one should never buy a guitar without trying it out personally, unless they absolutely can't. Every instrument is built differently even if the "specs" are the same.

I'd trust the good brand models and if I get a sweet deal I won't think about trying it first. With Amazon Fulfilled orders you can ask for a replacement or refund (money back into your bank account) without any questions asked.
12k you will get Avion AV1, an absolute minimum beginners guitar. Not a bad guitar, but not very good either.
That Ibanez 170DX has decent tone but nothing very special about it. More suitable for metal music. Tones are not very clean, especially on the mid pickup. Also, it has a relatively slower neck because of the medium frets but that is a matter of preference. I personally prefer jumbo frets because its faster.
One good thing is the two way tremolo bar, however the guitar will get out of tune after using it 5-6 times. Also, it has a five way selector switch for B, BM, M, MN, N humbucker combinations.
But its the most bang for the buck guitar you can get, if you can get it cheap.

It's nice. I will try this. Combination of picking and strumming.
I tried this before, poets of the fall, you must have heard the band name:
This has strum hand mutes and pretty cool riff.

B|---0---3---3---3---3---3-----3---|
G|---0---0-------0-------2-------2--|

Nice . BTW do you learn entire song or just the riff section .
Almost 10 month of guitar playing , and i am getting good progress . Learned all open chord , slash chord , barre chord , Power chord , minor and major scale . Now focusing on alternate picking and solo .

Wow. You looking for practice amp or stage amp? In 30k you can get a good high power solid state amp head plus cabinet. Still I think your budget is too high for a single room practice amp.
If you really want to burn that much on a practice amp, then get a Laney Cub 12R 15W full tube amp with 12'' Celestion Rocket speakers. Price is around 27k, but its completely vanilla other than the tubes.
But I'd suggest you get something like Roland Cube for appx 10-15k. That should be more than enough plus it has in built effects, so you don't have to invest extra to build your signal chain.

What took you so long to reply XD jk I would suggest to spend as much as you have to get a good amp so that you dont need to upgrade it....doesnt mean you need to shell in much there are vfm options. And also check for the artists that you like and the amps theyre using etc..for just practice the Roland Cube suggested by Desmond is good enough...
I just have this guitar now. After having entry level ones for long, this one feels more like a real guitar XD

So im basically saving for a nice amp so that i can experiment with it and find the tone i want and when i hit the stage i dont need to change da old one..So if you have the money just pull da triggerz !
The perfect amp for me would be Marshall DSL5c.But it will be too early for me to buy that.
Thinking of getting Laney Cub 10 because I don't want to waste time playing with effects on the amp.Maybe I will add a overdrive or distortion pedal.I will be sorted as far as amps go.

The Cub 10 already has distortion and drive. Configurable by increasing the gain. There is no delay or reverb though, so you might want to get pedals for that but these are not mandatory effects. You really don't need extra overdrive or distortion pedals unless you are not getting enough drive from your amp or if you are looking for a very particular sound.

Get it if you need to. But first see if you really need it.

You might also need a pre-amp pedal in front of your EQ pedal since equalizing unboosted signal from your guitar is useless, there won't be any noticeable difference.
Just a quick update. Instead of using a discrete effects pedal, why not get a multi-effects pedal? It usually has all the effects, amp models and cab models that you'd need and it boosts your raw guitar signal by default. All you need to do is set your amp to clean and plug the pedal in.
Finished setting up my Floyd rose bridge.Took me 12 hours straight 3 pm to 3 am..Learned a lot like FR mechanism,String action,Intonation, setup,String Spring tension etc.If you like physics you ll definitely like setting it up.
Now its more playable ,just want to reduce more action but couldnt lose the sustain :/

Because the tube amp has two different valves. A pre-amp valve and an output valve. Your guitar signal first gets pre-amp'd in the pre-amp valve and then goes through the effects (if the amp has those) and then goes through the output valve before getting played on the speaker. Therefore in short:
If the amp has effects loop, this problem gets mitigated in the following manner:
Guitar > [Pre-amp > FX loop out] > Pedal chain (EQ pedal will be somewhere in here) > [FX loop in > output valve > Speaker].
I think it would be better if you get an amp which has an onboard 3 band eq if you require it. Otherwise, get an overdrive pedal that has a 3 band eq on it.

I've been trying to record guitar via Digitech Rp255 through Cubase but I am having latency problems. Right now it shows 16ms with Asio4All. Can a dedicated soundcard make a difference?
Here's an attempt at Slipknot - Before I forget. Recorded 2 guitars seperately.
Will listen to it later, but you cannot completely eliminate latency (while recording). However, Cubase should have an option to compensate for latency (Audacity has it).
Im kind of noob at this ... just started using Irig 2 IK Multimedia | iRig 2 - Guitar interface adapter for iPad, iPhone iPod touch, Android and Mac to simulate amp in the tonetack app in Ipad air 2.cleans seem to be fine but when i increase the gain it seems to distort a lot.Maybe im not patient enough to fiddle the settings as other people had great things to say about the app and the irig 2,but i already asked for a refund.zero latency issues(has a buffer size of upto 64).
Help with reducing I/O latency [Archive] - Cockos Confederated Forums
This guy is also has the same problem ,i think it might have to do with windows.Like somebody said try to reduce the buffer size.
I dont have a good amp to see how the prs sounds but i can get a variety of tones from the sim and the headphone amp.I guess modelling/simulation isnt for me(had aplan to buy the zoom g1xon processor ,dropped it cos of too much hassle)
so i am planning to buy new practice amp and some pedal

zoom g1Xon is getting good love...its the cheapest one 49 $ and 69 $ with expression pedal
Amazon.com: Zoom G1Xon Guitar Effects Pedal with Expression Pedal: Musical Instrument
Also learned that you wont necessarily need an fx loop if you run you amp clean..
Here are some mods that I have done recently to my guitar.
