1. What is the purpose of the computer? What all applications and games are you going to run? (Stupid answers like 'gaming' or 'office work' will not work. Be exact. Which games? Which applications? Avoid the word 'et cetera.')
Ans: Gaming only. Will be playing games like Dota 2, CS:GO, Crysis 3, Battlefield 4 (upcoming) and newer demanding games. I do not do any kind of photo editing/video encoding etc and will be using the pc only for gaming.

2. What is your overall budget? If you can extend a bit for a more balanced configuration, then mention this too.
Ans: 22k +/- 1k (about $400)

3. Planning to overclock?
Ans: Yes, but if it will go overboard on my budget I won't do it.

4. Which Operating System are you planning to use?
Ans: Windows 7 that I already have.

5. How much hard drive space is needed?
Ans: 320 gb should be more than enough.

6. Do you want to buy a monitor? If yes, please mention which screen size and resolution do you want. If you already have a monitor and want to reuse it, again mention the size and resolution of monitor you have.
Ans: No

7. Which components you DON'T want to buy or which components you already have and plan on reusing?
Ans: I have an old compaq pressario pc with a slow core 2 duo. Im planning to use its power supply unit and optical drive. I also have a monitor, keyboard and mouse. All i need is a processor, RAM, Motherboard and GPU.

8. When are you planning to buy the system?
Ans: May-June

9. Have you ever built a desktop before or will this be done by an assembler?
Ans: I will be doing it but I can approach help if I need it.

10. Where do you live? Are you buying locally? Are you open to buying stuff from online shops if you don't get locally?
Ans: Hyderabad but planning to buy some of the components from the US. Yes, will be buying from Amazon, tigerdirect etc.

11. Anything else which you would like to say?
Ans:
I was thinking of:
AMD FX 4300 (Quad core 3.8-4.0 GHz) (The 3rd Gen i3 is a bit better but this one is unlocked and open to overclocking.)
EVGA GeForce GTX 650 Ti Boost Superclocked 2 GB 192 Bit (Cannot find the 1 GB version) (Best card I could find in the $180 range)
Kingston Hyper X Black high performance Ram (2x4 GB) (Its quite cheap in amazon)

This leaves me $40-50 for the motherboard and the hard drive. Can you suggest me a good motherboard and a hard drive?

In may and june intel Haswell will be out and we dont know the prices now. And prices will change for the present components . So it is better to repost 2 weeks before buying

I dont think I will be able to afford that and after all its a gaming PC so the processor won't be a bottleneck (hopefully). But considering the present scenario? Is there a better CPU than the AMD FX 4300 for this price range? Also can you suggest a mobo and the hard drive?

Why don't you buy from a Indian online shop?? There is Mdcomputer.in and flipkart.com. Anyway, go for the WD blue 320gb to the Seagate baracuda 320gb which is available at 2.9-3k or 49.99 USD. AMD Motherboards, I do not know much about, wait for other members opinions.

The PSU wont be sufficient.. Usually OEM PSUs are rated at 300w at max.. you need to purchase a new PSU
If you are gonna purchase now,
id suggest
i3 3220 -7K
B75 Mobo- 4.1k
RAM- Corsair XMS3 4 GB - 1.5k
GPU - GTX 650 Ti 2GB (Depends upon price and availability) check MD computers,I think they have a 2 GB version in stock
CX430v2- Rs 2.5K
If you cant extend for PSU, get HD 7770 for Rs 7.5K
HDD WD Blue 320 GB - 2.8K or equivalent seagate.. your preference

Sounds ok. But which CPU do you suggest? The i3 or the AMD FX 4300? The AMD one is a little cheaper and can be overclocked.

@shiva I meant that I can buy from amazon etc since ill be going to the US in may-june. So if things are cheaper there I can get it from there. I really need to save where ever I can so I can scrape through a gaming keyboard in that price.

Oh 650ti boost will blow away hd 7770, but get the regular version, no need to waste 10$.
Msi 970a g46, is the best budget board.
Around 5.2k in india.

As for fx 4300 vs i3
I suggest i3

Step up to fx 6300 if you can.

If you are buying from US then try to get the AMD FX-6300 which is the perfect choice for CPU intensive applications and gaming (Gaming is now very much multi-threaded) and budget.

Be advised that FX 6300 will cost a bomb, especially the shipping part..
It should be better if you buy a i5 3550 or equivalent processor instead for 10k

Way out of budget bro...Isnt there a cheaper alternative? If I buy an expensive motherboard, I have to get a slower gpu which I dont want to do...Cant i save a little on the motherboard? Also, Im willing to let go overclocking if I can save money on the motherboard.

Btw are there any compatibility issues between an AMD processor and a nvidia gpu?

Exactly. I agree with u.

I really like the AMD FX 6300 and the GTX 650 Ti Boost combo. Hopefully it will let me play new games at 1080p medium-high settings. But the problem is that with the motherboard costing around 6-7k its difficult to fit all this in my budget.

I can upgrade it later when I have the money to spare. I can live with long game loading times. I just need better frame rates right now, never mind how much longer it takes to load a game. Also, if the FX 6300 won't bottleneck the GPU for a couple of years to come, Im ok with not overclocking.

P.S. The FX 6300 closely matches the i3 3220 in terms of gaming performace (all i care about). If I go for the i3 3220, can I get a cheaper motherboard alternative? Like in the range of $60?

If you get i3, you can go as cheap as you want on motherboard ;)
If you will buy ssd in future, get a b 75 motherboard for 4k else get a h61 for 2.2-3k.
I3 is not overclockable so any intel 1155 motherboard will run it safely and if your main purpose is gaming, currently its equivalent to fx 8350 which runs at 4.2ghz at stock.
But do you play online?

And then you can also upgrade that ancient hdd of yours ;)

The I3 is not equal to FX 8350 in gaming. When Games use more than 2 to 4 cores the I3 struggles whereas the FX 8350 runs it with ease.

In Crysis 3, i3 3220 is not at all comparable to even the lower end FX and Trinity Quad Cores also. FX-4170 is lot ahead of it and the older FX-6200 based on Bulldozer design beats it by a great margin. So new games with Multi-Core support, Piledriver based FX-6300 (which is again better performer than FX-6200) will perform far better than i3 3220.
Frankly speaking, if anybody is buying a Processor right now, get a quad core or higher, no point of getting those HT enabled Multiplier locked Dual Core processors.

Precisely what I have been trying to push with each gaming config. Its pointless setting up a gaming rig with a dual core. The system is bound to suffer within a few months. The core requirements for games are going up. A quad core should be minimum right now.

B75 lacks the intel smart response tech required for performance enhancement with SSD. LGA 1155 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
H77 is a minimum.

i3 is way out of fx8350's league. Just a matter of time before people realize the obvious.

Yeah and can you please tell me how many games can take advantage of more than 2 cores?? Well I can count them on my fingers!!
Here is what you are looking for:
*media.bestofmicro.com/F/2/371198/original/Average.png

" For your dollar, the Core i5 has no competition above $160. At $130, the Core i3-3220 is tough to beat. It no longer humiliates the FX line-up in games thanks to AMD's most recent architectural update, but it's still cheaper, faster, and more power-friendly than most of the Vishera-based models.

Fortunately for AMD, its chips fare better in the non-gaming components of our benchmark suite, where its modular architecture is better able to benefit from today's threaded software. In a general-purpose workstation, that's certainly something to think about. But in apure gaming machine, there's just no ignoring the effectiveness of Intel's Sandy and Ivy Bridge designs."

And this article was published last month lol!!

For crysis 3 are you gonna neglect all the games made till today. Fx only beats i3 in battlefield multiplayer and crysis 3. Everywhere else its i3. And remember just like fx is no true octa core, i3 is no dual core its dual core+ ht

Any site which can give average fps titleto fx compared to i3?

And @myth h77 is no minimum!!
With your am3+ boards are you getting srt? Its a simple cacheing technology, which many ssd manufacturers will give you with their own implementations. Dont just make negatives out of thin air :/

We are not telling abt the present games, we are telling abt the games that will come in future like GTA 5. Crysis 3 is the Best Example .

Crysis is always a lot ahead of the curve. Even hd 7970/ gtx 680 cant max it, so does this mean anything less than their cf/sli is waste? Nobody has seen the future, ppl started telling that games would go multithreaded in 2008 and now we are in 2012 and except crysis 3 no other game is ill suited for dual cores ( battlefield's only online component pushes i3 but its still playable) and gta 5 willrun on i3 easy peasy I bet. The truth is fx are very good at apps, but arent at games. No site publically advises fx for gaming, thats why i3 is recommended over fx 6300 at toms monthly cpu chart and not even one fx is recommended.
I did not start this flame war, and you cant contradict the PRESENT facts and no one has seen the future.
Op does not have a budget for fx 6300 so he asked is i3 alright, and yes its alright. All of you started bashing my comment for no reason. And if you think any fx is over i3 in a cumulative fps score over more than 10 games PROVE IT :)

Crysis is always a lot ahead of the curve. No site publically advises any fx for gaming. If you can get i5 get it else i3 kills everything else in GAMING.
I have prooved my point enough times can you proove yours. People are saying that games will go multithreaded since 2008 and now we are in 13. Leaving crysis 3 in no other game can a fx beat i3 at fhd resolution. Truth is fx hardly have 75% single threaded performance of ivy.
I can bet gta 5 will run just fine on I3 or what will happen to i5 laptops??
And talk about the future. You call fx 8350 Unlocked lol! Its already on 4.2ghzand what you want to overclock it upto 5?? Most people wont go/ cant go over 4.7 and thats an overclock of. 5 ghz and every i5 is overclockable to. 4ghz.
Fx is good at multithreaded apps and op could not get a decent mobo in his budget
So I advised him i3 and I still stand on my statement. Get a cumulative score of 10 games and proove that fx is ahead.
And that is why tom still does not approve any fx but i3 and i5 That is why every piledriver fx and i3 are on same level in heirarchy chart. And did I mention that they take so much power that you could run 2 i3s and still have some power left.
Dont bash me for no reason, I did not start flame war, but you are making jokeof yourself @ashish65 as I specifically said i3=> fx8350 in GAMING ( EXCEPT CRYSIS 3 AND BF3 MULTIPLAYER LOL)

Will an i5 3470 be sufficient? Can i cheap out on the motherboard (its locked)? Suggest me a good motherboard for the i5 3740 (as cheap as possible) and no I wont be buying an ssd in the future, ill just get a 320 gb hard drive.

My Build:

GTX 650 Ti Boost - $169
Corsair Vengeance 4 GB - $35
Corsair CX430 V2 PSU - $45 (Is there a cheaper alternative?)

I dont have much experience but I have to agree..
However, the minor increase in performance of i3 can be easily overlooked by the addition of extra cores (provided pricing remains same)

No gaming benchmarks though... so cant say for certain
Besides, they are both at different price categories, so why compare ?

Ok ill go for the cheapest H61 Mobo for the i5 and a $30 Case then. I hope stock cooling will be sufficient.

P.S. Even though AMD FX Quad cores with high clock speeds are cheaper and sound better on paper, why is it that currently in single threaded games the i3 beats them? Why is an ordinary i5 far better than an octa core FX processor clocked at a higher frequency?

better clockspeed/performance ratio i guess.. Intel did a really good job at this

Oh get the cheapest i5 you can get. They start around 170$ in us. If you arent gonna overclock cpu cut z77/68 boards out of you list and h77 will prob. Be to pricey so I will list down the features of b75 over h61 mobo
1) usb 3.0
2) 1 sata III (6 gbps port)
3) 1600mhz ram support
If you can ignore all three get h61 else get b75.

But still if I had to make a budget gaming pc it would have
I3-3220 130$
650ti-boost 1gb gddr5 150$
Corsair cx 430w
Wd blue 500gb
Nzxt source elite 210
Dell st 2240
Gigabyte b75 mobo
4x2gb corsair value select ram (1600mhz)
And maybe samsung 120gb 840 ( As once you have experienced ssd, you cant go back)

This rig will comfortably play on medium-high settings for 2years I guess.

Dont worry about i3, gpu outdate much faster than cpu.

650ti cant benefit from 2gb gddr5 mem as it doesnt have enough juice to dial up aa very high.

And this is the rig I am going to suggest any friend on budget.
total of cpu+mobo+gpu will come about 330-340$

Thanks, will go with the 1Gb card but with the i5.

Btw will Corsair VS450 be a good PSU? Can I swap it for the CX430 v2?

You cant even buy vs 450 in us as described by corsair its made for asian regions only. Get the cx 430.

Piledriver's ipc is even lower than phenom II's, what can you expect. Were phenom's were being made with 32nm tech, there additional frequency would have made them beating fx in games once again. They were a real charmer, regret not buying them at that time :) but they are still pretty close to i3/ fx 8350, beating almost anything else out there. And a true quad core, not like amd's 8core/ 4module marketing crap.

But amd can really make progression with their gpgpu tech, but they dont even have integrated gpu on fx lol.

Btw you can still get phenom II in us. Why dont you take a look on them. Theyaare under hundered dollars.

Since its gaming rig primarily go with the Intel i5 3470. Had it been you had to some serious processing along with gaming then we would have safely suggested you an FX,its a no brainer.

Stick with a Corsair CX430V2.

Guys, please concentrate on the topic rather than Intel and AMD's future. vaibhavs800, you don't have to show what AMD should do to make OP buy an Intel processor...you are too small to judge it.

OP, if you are going with an i5 then there is no problem, FX octa core or i5 both will do for you...just don't get a i3 or other dual cores. When games are becoming Multi-threaded then there is a chance that the next games will be multi-threaded. Because not all the games are build from scratch, they use some common and easily available Engine to build it and add their customization for the particular product. It is like having a common base framework to start the development and you can add, modify or remove features as per your requirements. Now when you implement high degree of Multi-threading in a gaming engine, all the games trhat will use that engine will have some level of multi-core optimization. Currently Frostbite 3, Cry Engine 3 or the Dunia Engine 2...all have good amount of Multi-threading support and any games based on those engine, can add optimized Multi-threading support. Crysis 3, Far Cry 3 or the Tomb Raider 2013 are example of it and they can't be considered some isolated games with multi core support...in upcoming games you can see a huge boost in performance with multiple cores available.

This is not just my opinion, just check the Best Processor for every month section in Tomshardware and you will find out that their thinking is same as I have expressed here.

Do you want to break his heart @ cilus??
I supported fx 6300 in the begining, but op couldnt spend so much on cpu+ mobo. We all know that low end am3+ mobo cant handle fx 6300 so He asked if i3 was okay, and I merely stated the obvious that right now its even faster than fx 8350 at gaming and he is good to go ( is it necessary we ask all to increase their budget or face dire consequences :D). This triggered those reactions from some people you know and to justify my comments I backed up with various reputable links. And I specifically said GAMING again and again. Except 1-2 games i3 can handle all games currently and h61 mobo are quite stable. I was helping op till amd defenders entered and none of them can still proove that fx can beat i3 in a cumulative score over many games. 2 exceptions arent a trend.
I3<< fx 8350 in multithreaded apps but at the end of the day i3 > fx 8350 in gaming currently.
Anyway if one of you can see I really helped op in reaching a decision unlike all of you just starting flame wars. I never started this, but I can backup my every suggestion with proof ;)

After a hard battle between amd fanboys and intel fanboys, ive probably made my choice. Im going to go for the i5 3470.

There is no such battle, the way some members are trying to showcase it. The Incinerator, the so called AMD lover, also supported the fact of getting an i5 3470. And my post was to make you understand to get a Quad Core or higher end CPU instead of a Dual Core one...that's all..I didn't ask you to get a FX-8350...read my post again.

Anyway, the decision of getting an i5 3470 is perfectly fine as it can easily handle the need of Multi-threaded requirements of upcoming games.
