hi friends...

first the template Q n A..

1. What is the purpose of the computer? What all applications and games are you going to run? (Stupid answers like 'gaming' or 'office work' will not work. Be exact. Which games? Which applications? Avoid the word 'et cetera.')
Ans: 1. software development/compiling (like for android, linux etc.), android aosp etc.
2. intense virtual machine (linux, windows, osx 32/64 bit) works where linux will be as host OS always.
3. gaming (i actually hav no idea about the latest games n their needs). bt will love to play some good multiplayer/fps game on single machine or on network with joysticks. bt i dont want to play hi-fi games which needs good/expensive h/w.
4. running servers (apache,ftp,nfs,dns,dhcp,ldap,iis etc..)
5. run s/w like ms office, gimp, vlc etc. watch movies also.

2. What is your overall budget? If you can extend a bit for a more balanced configuration, then mention this too.
Ans: 20,000 INR. can be extended to 22,000 INR. my idea is to buy components one by one. so am not in that hurry.

3. Planning to overclock?
Ans: yes, if possible and comes within budget.

4. Which Operating System are you planning to use?
Ans: there will be two host OS (dual boot), linux n windows 32/64 bit (7 or server2008 probably). but will also run linux/unix (centos, freebsd, solaris etc.). windows (xp,7,server). osx.

5. How much hard drive space is needed?
Ans: will buy it later. may be 500gb.

6. Do you want to buy a monitor? If yes, please mention which screen size and resolution do you want. If you already have a monitor and want to reuse it, again mention the size and resolution of monitor you have.
Ans: yes, will buy a monitor. and for size and resolution, whichever comes within budget with good support n warranty.

7. Which components you DON'T want to buy or which components you already have and plan on reusing?
Ans: UPS ( i hav a old microtek with excide 600v battery ups), graphics card.

8. When are you planning to buy the system?
Ans: within 2 month.

9. Have you ever built a desktop before or will this be done by an assembler?
Ans: yes. this time also i will try to asamble it myself. but am not that tech person.

10. Where do you live? Are you buying locally? Are you open to buying stuff from online shops if you don't get locally?
Ans: kolkata. wherever i get cheap price n good support, i will buy. but i also prefer to buy on EMI. so i am open to buy from online shops also. (like for monitor- i was looking at dell. they offer buy on EMI)

11. Anything else which you would like to say?
Ans: right now i want to buy the main components. cabinet (with smps), cpu, motherboard, ram, monitor. i will buy others one by one later.

so my budget is 20-22k for first phase. right nw i want to buy :

Cabinet (with SMPS):
PSU: not sure
CPU: those with good virtualization support
MoBo:
RAM: 4gb
Monitor: which ever comes within budget.

my few queries:
1. do i need a cooling system ??
2. do i need a seperate PSU ? is there will be any prob if use the smps comes with cabinet ?
3. as i will do virtual machine works, wat will be best CPU for it ? i hav no probs to go with AMD if it gives good performance?
4. do i need a dedicated graphix card? as i will be running win7 n some games (not in my priority list).
5. i hav a IDE samsung 80gb internal hdd. will modern latest mobo supports ide hdds ?

thx a lot to u guys in advance. will really appreciate if get advise n help from u guys. :)

you need a cooling system if you are overclocking.
you definitely need a psu.smps which comes with cabinet are usually of crap quality & meant only for low power systems.(also see this *www.thinkdigit.com/forum/power-sup...89-power-supply-blacklist-thread-newbies.html )
don't know the latest scenario but if you have the budget intel quad cores are really good.
if you go for intel the integrated graphics within processor should be sufficient for your usages.
no modern mobo comes with PATA port so you have to either buy a usb casing or pci sata+pata card.

what does first phase will include. and 20-22K for everything including monitor will make your config quiet weak.
and buying one by one or in EMI helps you increase the budget by any means ??

thx whitestar_999 for ur reply :)

i am not dat into overclocking. so its like "if its possible, will do it". overclocking will not help me on this much.
psu will cost xtra. how can i buy a decent cabinet+psu within 2000-2500 inr ??
thx for the guide link. will look into that.
yea, as i will not be buying seperate graphics card, may be i will go for intel. but then amd cpu has good virtualization support with low price.
i hav that extarnal usb cashing. but i want to use as internal hdd. lets see... thx..

thx acewin for reply.
yes, u r right. if i include monitor then my rig gonna be weak with low-end cpu. so i will exclude monitor if its not coming within budget.
mainly i will buy cpu,ram,mobo,cabinet.
if i get all on emi, i may increase my budget.

Ask just a week or so before buying system..

wat difference does it make ?

i will be buy the whole rig within nxt 2 month of time, not after 2 month. right now i will be buying those main components within nxt 2 weeks..

i need ur suggestion mainly for the proper CPU n MoBo. cause i will be using my box mainly for virtualization. 4-5 VMs (may be more) will be running at the same time on host os (linux).

save some more & buy better components instead of buying now & regret later.the usages you mentioned require at least a quad core for smooth performance.

i hav no problem to go for quad core. bt i wont buy i7. dats beyond my budget. but i can invest in i5 type cpu if its really worth it.
and dats why i needed ur suggestions.

amd fx 8120/8150 looks best for your usages but these will cost ~9500 & 11500 respectively.also you will need a good mobo costing ~6500 to fully utilize these processors.many such boards don't come with integrated graphics so adding a cheap graphics card(radeon 5450) for ~2000 & this combination alone will cost you ~18000 minimum.

yea.. if i go for amd i hav to buy a seperate gfx card. this cpu looks good to me too. but do i really need a 8 core cpu?
4-6 core will be good for me ,i guess. is there any good intel cpu for that ?

plz also suggest a good compatible mobo for da cpu. and wat cabinet n psu i will go for ?

Sep 23, 2012 at 6:51 PM
if you limit your usage to 3vm at a time then intel i5 can do the job(3 cores 1 for each vm & 4th core for host os).but the thing is cheapest i5 will cost ~9500 too but you can get a ~4500 mobo with no graphics card required.so you will save ~4000 compared to amd config but will be limited to 3VM & 1 host os for smooth functioning.if that's ok with you then go for i5 2400/2320(whichever is cheaper)+gigabyte GA-B75M-D3H+2*4gb corsair 1333 ram.

after reading some reviews .... (prices r frm FK)

amd fx 8120 = 8 cores. NO integrated gfx [10k INR]
amd fx 8150 = 8 cores with Integrated gfx [12k INR]

both can be overclocked (which i may not do). BUT for both, i hav to buy a good cpu cooling system which will cost me another 2k.
and if i buy 8120, then again i hav to buy a separate gfx card. cheapest good decent will cost me 3-5k.

now am not sure how good is the 8150 inbuilt gfx n its performance... can u guys hav any say on this ??

wat abt FX 6100 = 6 cores with integrated gfx [7900 INR] ??

intel i5 2320 = 4 cores with Integrated gfx (no overclock) [11k INR]
intel i5 2400 = 4 cores with Integrated gfx (no overclock) [11700 INR]
intel i5 2500 = 4 cores with Integrated gfx HD 2000 (no overclock) [12600 INR]

4 cores and with integrated gfx. NO overclocking (i dnt bother). not sure if i hav to buy a seperate cooling system !!
so if i go with this CPUs i dont need to buy a extra gfx card which will save me around 3k.

intel 2500k = 4 cores with Integrated gfx HD 3000 (overclock-able) [13500 INR]
only advantage is, its overclockable. good integrated gfx.

my main need is virtualization, and then gaming.

plz suggest components, according to the CPU. this will help to choose the best possible rig for me. PLZ dont bother abt the budget. i may increase it.

Do you need this ? -
Intel® Virtualization Technology for Directed I/O

I'm assuming that you need vt-d and vt-x. Now first of all I'll not recommend fx bulldozer processors . They are a failure (leaving 4core ). Getting 2nd or 3rd gen intel i5 will be a far better choice. Now is this right ? - 22k ->psu,mobo,cpu and ram

@whitestar
Guess I should have been more clear . When I said that getting i5 will be a better choice , I meant to say the one which support vt-x and vt-d both for which I had asked for op. Now the link you have posted has the comparison b/w an i7 without vt-d. vt-x can be found in almost all new proccys but vt-d is found only in specific processors

One more thing , no "k" processors have vt-d so , here you save on cpu cooler and mobo
Now these are the processors with both vt-x and vt-d -
i5-2400 , i5-2500 , i5-3470, i5-3550,and i5 3570 (I've not mentioned p processors because they don't have integrated gpu and also which are not in the list are s and t. They save power but go down in performance ; not significantly )
Now that there are no k processors , get a mobo around 3-4k as there will be no overclocking

yes. i need both vt-d and vt-x.
but with amd cpu, i can run more than 5+ VMs at the same time without any prob or lag. and as intel i5 with 4 cores, i can run maximum 3-4 VMs at the same time. i am still reading some article n reviews on virtualization intel vs amd..
22k > cpu,mobo,ram,cabinet+psu.
and also i was not aware dat i hav to buy a seperate coolong system fr the cpu also :-( ..

one thing i dont understand, wats exactly wrong with this AMD cpus. why people dont still recomend them. is there really anything wrong ??
as in my case, i was looking at the cores which i will be needed for VT. but hav read some reviews where they also suggest to go with i5 2500k. dont get it :-|

intel "k" edition/overclockable processor does not support vt-d.non-k processor like i5 2400 support vt-d in combination with a compatible vt-d supporting mobo(& bios) which luckily B75 is.
Desktop Boards — Compatibility with Intel® Virtualization Technology (Intel® VT)
*download.gigabyte.eu/FileList/Manual/mb_manual_ga-b75m-d3h_e.pdf
btw is vt-d support that much essential to you.i don't think it has much use for an average/normal/consumer setup & seems more suited to a dedicated server type setup where lots of VMs need to be allotted various hardware devices.also it require support from virtualization software as well as hardware device driver.anyway it seems that my earlier suggestion of i5 2400+gigabyte B75 is good for vt-d too.there is nothing wrong with amd FX series.it is just that performance wise they are usually behind or just equal to amd's own older phenom II x4/x6 series with more power consumption & heat.also with amd too there are issues with vt-d most notably that even if all amd fx processors support vt-d all mobos don't & it is difficult to search for amd mobos which truly support vt-d because even if the motherboard supports vt-d it will also need a bios to enable this feature.i think vt-d is not worth the money & effort to setup for a regular/home usage scenario.either get i5 2400 combo or get 8120+mobo like 880G.

intel i5 3550 (3rd gen) with HD 2500 = 13300 INR (consider if MoBo comes cheap)
intel i5 3570 (3rd gen) with HD 2500 = 14310 INR (cross my budget)

wats the diffrences between this CPUs ??
and can anyone plz tell me wats with Intel's 4 physical cores + 4 logical. is that mean i5 4 core CPUs hav 8 cores ??

Intel's VT-x = AMD V and VT-d=AMD IOMMU
Both fx8150/8120 have AMD V and IOMMU.
IOMMU depends upon the chipset.Motherboards built around 970,990X,990fx chipsets have IOMMU implemented on it.These motherboards don't have on-board graphics.
880G chipset has on-board graphics but doesn't support IOMMU.

@gmg9
If you are not into overclocking then additional cooling is not required for fx8150/8120 processors. They run much cooler than sandy bridge i5 2400.
If you want IOMMU/VT-d and more cores then you can go with fx8120@9.5k+gigabyte 970a-ud3@6k+gt 210(for display for the time being)@1.5k.
Else you can go with i5 2400.

i5 2xxx/3xxx=4C/4T C=cores T=threads
i7 2xxx/3xxx=4C/8T
i5 2xxx/3xxx don't have hyper-threading.

i5 2400 is much faster than fx-6100 & just because 6100 has 6 cores doesn't mean it will be much faster than 4 core i5 2400 in virtualization except maybe in certain extreme cases.my suggestion is still i5 2400 because overall it is faster.

If you are more into Virtualisation, run multiple VMs simultaneously or run intensive applications inside VM which requires more cores then fx8150/8120's 8 cores would be handy and better. If you don't require that many core utilisation at a time then i5 2400 is better and faster.
fx6100 is not that good an option because it is slower. Also difference between fx8120 and fx6100 is only 1.5k.

this is the type of VMs i will be running........
1. mysql5 in centos6
2. oracle 10g//11g in centos
3. solaris 10
4. freebsd 6/8
5. windows server 2003/2008
6. apache, iis, dns-dhcp etc..
7. openldap, active directory
8. ubuntu
9. suse enterprize 10/11
10. debian6

host will be linux..

so out of the above VMs, atleast 3-4 will be running simultaneously on the linux host.
virtualbox, vmware, xen, kvm all will be used depending on the environment, flxibility n s/w-h/w support.

but all this for my own learning n development purpose.

so i need a cpu which dont get that much HOT n UnStable. can handly load of this VMs. can be long lasting n future proof. i dont need overclocking. bt vt-d will be a added advantage as i will be using it bt not that much.

if i am not mistaken even when running 3-4VMs simultaneously as long as they are idle(no cpu intensive process simultaneously in all VMs) a fast quad core like intel should be able to handle them smoothly.

thx @hitesh for ur help..

is 3470 has any good advantages over 2400 ? except 22nm, 65w and little extra clock speed

will 2400 inetrated hd 2000 gfx run few multiplayer type games ? not those hifi games, but games like halo, cod etc..

yea, i will do more research on the price. will hav to look in the offline market too. will let u know.

if i am not mistaken even when running 3-4VMs simultaneously as long as they are idle(no cpu intensive process simultaneously in all VMs) a fast quad core like intel should be able to handle them smoothly.

yes. if they stay idle. but in my case it will not always happen. for example, and even if i run 4 VMs simultaneously, then there will be no more core(cpu) left for the host os.

is 3470 has any good advantages over 2400 ? except 22nm, 65w and little extra clock speed

Yes integrated graphics. 3470 has hd2500 and 2400 has hd2000.
AnandTech - Intel Core i5 3470 Review: HD 2500 Graphics Tested

I have g620 and I can play cod at low-med settings.
Can't say about halo , have only played halo 1.

@gmg9
if you are running more VMs simultaneously and require more core usage then fx8120/8150 is a much better option.
If we take overclocking out of account ...the fx8150/8120 run cooler even if they consume more power.

yea.. if i go for amd i hav to buy a seperate gfx card. this cpu looks good to me too. but do i really need a 8 core cpu?
4-6 core will be good for me ,i guess. is there any good intel cpu for that ?

plz also suggest a good compatible mobo for da cpu. and wat cabinet n psu i will go for ?

If you can spend why buy weak component and regret later.

after reading some reviews ....

PLZ dont bother abt the budget. i may increase it.

thx a lot for all your help frnds. getting really good info n help from u guys...

FX 8120/8150 don't have graphics integrated into cpu but is integrated with motherboard so need to buy separate GPU You can expect a 4 series ati GPU far better than intel HD series.
