Hi guys,

I want to buy a Tab for home use for my family. My sis read competitive exams site, my dad read news update on PC. And i read tech blogs, social networking, android rooting & hacking etc ;) I'm confused between Nexus7+16GB+wifi and Nexus7+32GB+3G+wifi on flipkart its Rs.9k and Rs.13k till 19th Oct.

I've wifi at home of BSNL 2MBPS NU using on my old desktop. I've also XOLO Q800 which can be used as Wi-fi hotspot, so 1st i thought to buy wi-fi version only. For 3G version I've to pay Rs.4k more. Guys is it worth to pay Rs.4k extra for 3G version Nexus ? If any of you using Nexus 7 (2012) plz clarify me few things:

1. Can i use whatsapp, wechat, gtalk, skype on Nexus?
2. Can i make video call using gtalk/skype?
3. Hows reading experience pdf file on this tab ? Does it hurt your eyes reading for long duration ? My main purpose is to read PDF and offline webpage files.
4. Is screen too small to read pdf or browse webpage ? My dad is 55 year old uses Plus power glasses.
5. can i root ? Can i use custom ROM ?
6. How is its service warranty in India?

If u think you can suggest any other better tab then here is my requirement.

1. Budget: Rs.10k-12k
2. Display type and size: Must have IPS with 200+ PPI, 7" -10"
3. Preferred choice of brand: Any brand with min 1 Year service warranty
4. Preferred connectivity options : Bluetooth , inbuilt 3G for DATA. Calling facility is not important.

plz guide me, i'm confused here, Only NEXUS brand is attracting me lot here.

It's not 9k anymore, price has been updated to 10k today.

I've wifi at home of BSNL 2MBPS NU using on my old desktop. I've also XOLO Q800 which can be used as Wi-fi hotspot, so 1st i thought to buy wi-fi version only. For 3G version I've to pay Rs.4k more. It depends, according to your requirements.

I, personally think, a tab which doesn't have 3G has nothing to do, may be I'll be playing games for sometime, but after that what would I do? At home, I have PC, Mobile to play around, so 3G is must for me, otherwise while travelling it'd be of no use for me. I know, I can use tethering and all, but while travelling, battery consumption is a real fact though.

But again, as I said above, depends on your usage and your requirement.

1. Can i use whatsapp, wechat, gtalk, skype on Nexus?

Yes for Gtalk and Skype. Don't know about whatsapp and wechat :p

2. Can i make video call using gtalk/skype?

Yes on skype, don't know on Gtalk.

3. Hows reading experience pdf file on this tab ? Does it hurt your eyes reading for long duration ? My main purpose is to read PDF and offline webpage files.

I personally, found the screen great :) And it doesn't hurt eye if brightness is adjusted accordingly.

4. Is screen too small to read pdf or browse webpage ? My dad is 55 year old uses Plus power glasses.

Well, that depends. According to me, it's really big enough to read things.

5. can i root ? Can i use custom ROM ?

Yes, refer XDA :)

6. How is its service warranty in India?

Don't know.

Apart from the points mentioned above:

1. Nexus 7 16 GB Wifi model is still Rs 8999 on FK. (Seems they have removed the Rs 1000 discount, from Rs 9999).
2. There are Huawei 3G USB dongles available which can be used with N7 using a OTG cable. Thread: [DEV] 3G Dongles - Huawei/ZTE GSM & CDMA - xda-developers
3. So, if you are willing to go through the R&D for working 3G on N7 through external dongles, and/or you are going to use the tab mostly on WiFi, then N7 is a no brainer.

And that's why I couldn't resist buying myself a N7 16 GB yesterday. :D
But, its still on the way. Might receive tomorrow!!

I personally am more excited by the fact, that I will be able to use Ubuntu also on that N7! :D

BTW, how do rate your XOLO 800 ?. especially for reading pdf, documents and web pages ?. How is the key pad ? I am seriously planning to buy one. ( some says Q 700 is better and have bigger battery. Did you evaluated it before buying this one ?
