I have been postponing buying a bike only since years now. Now I have finally decided to buy one.

My background:
I am a novice in driving bike. Only practiced on my friend's Yamaha FZS v2.0 150 cc bike. I can now drive it change gears fairly well now. I am well built, don't go to gym and don't posses a good height. I could barely reach ground on the Yamaha FZS v2.0 bike.

Requirement:
I don't want to spend a lakh on the bike, since it will be my first bike I don't want to overwhelm myself. Hence I am even willing to buy a 125 cc bike (thinking it's weight maybe less). But I can no more than 150 cc for sure. Mileage is also important.

Choices:
After all the research with my friend I could shortlist following two bikes (based on looks, features and price):
Yamaha SZRR V2.0 150 cc
Hero Glamor FI 125 cc

Here is the price breakdown of the both bikes, in Delhi:
Yamaha SZ RR v2.0, Price: 67,803. On road: 77,134.
Hero Glamour FI (2017), Price: 69548. On road: 78,966.

Yamaha SZRR v2.0:

Hero Glamor FI:

*indianautosblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/2017-Hero-Glamour-FI-fuel-injected-side.jpeg

Now I don't which should I go for, and if I should consider some other bikes too. The price of Hero Glamour FI seems more despite the fact that it's a 125 CC bike. One more thing I want to consider is wheel thickness. The Yamaha FZS v2.0 have thick wheels, which I think provides more stability on roads. Should I consider this factor?

Please help!

Honda CBF Stunner 125 cc. Well I know it's not one of the most popular bikes in the market but I as a proud owner of this bike for the past 8 years vouch for its reliability. Honda engine lasts long and mileage is excellent (approx 50-55 kms to a litre even after 8 years of heavy usage.) This bike has good balance and seat is comfortable for long distances (200 kms). on road pric delhi Rs. 65,654

Edit : Right now I checked and Stunner model has been discontinued two years back.

P.s Another 125 cc model I can recommend is Honda Shine

Both the bikes are entry level bikes, I am talking in terms of engine, wheels, suspension and features etc. If you are a student and need a bike then get atleast a 150cc bike as it will give you good mileage+the pickup will be better than the options that you have chosen. Don't worry about your built, you can handle a 500cc bike also. The rest depends upon your usage.
If you can afford a car then go for it instead of a bike.

For folks small height, Avenger 150 is a good option but it's not for beginners because of difficult handling.

IMO, Honda Shine is an excellent City bike which will also be very economical and comfortable/easy to ride.

Although, I would recommend buying a 150cc bike.... Preferably Suzuki Gixxer. It's an excellent bike worth every penny. If I hadn't purchased My Street 220, I would have considered it. A bit expensive, yes... But well worth it. Once you get hold of the biking....you will love it.

Avenger is good but yes difficult handing. It's just weird and wouldn't even match my personality (not a hunk).
I considered Gixxer, but it has a radically different design (not sure if my father would be able to handle it. Yes this would be a family used bike).
I will look into Honda Shine recommendation.

Looked at Honda Shine. It's very plain looking. Guys, this would be my first bike. As much as I don't want to over spend, I don't think I am willing to cut price for a very basic looking bike. If that been the case, I would have gone for Bajaj Discover cause I liked it's design(as well as name :p).

If price is factored out, which bike is better among Honda Shine, and the two bikes which I posted in first post??

Reason the Glamour you picked is expensive, coz it's FI. I guess you know that. With Glamour carb version, you could save some money. Glamour's tyres aren't puny either, that should be good enough.

Assuming you aren't going for premium 150/160cc bikes, like FZ, Hornet, Gixxer. You have these options in 125-150cc bikes, around 70-80k budget.

New Glamour
Shine SP
Super splendor - Plain look
Shine - Plain look
Saluto - Plain look
Ignitor - Too sporty

Pulsar 135 LS

Achiever - Plain look
SZ RR V2

Test ride the bikes before finalizing.

Brother if you drive a cycle perfectly then you can handle any bike till 500cc without any issues. Yes it will take some time to get used to but it is easy after the initial days.
Anyways I would still suggest you to get at least a 150cc bike. Check any bike from Bajaj. Whichever you finalize, take test ride before purchasing.
Good luck.

I would go with the Yamaha for the build quality. Second ,I read somewhere Glamour isn't as powerful as other 125cc rivals. Checkout xbhp forums for reviews by owners of the bikes.

Agree on the point to buy atleast a 150 cc bike. I wouldn't want to spend money on something that I would feel inadequate just a few months after I get use to it.
Also agree that Yamaha have good built quality, since I have basically learned driving on Yamaha FZ S Ver2 bike.

Hence so far, only the bike Yamaha SZRR ver 2 seems on par.

If you're young, most likely you will feel you want more after few months of riding. Be it 125 or 150 or even higher capacity bike.
I had been wanting to buy a bike for years and did some research. I was kinda sure I will be buying Discover, after test ride I dropped that idea. So take test ride. In paper, one would seem like that it would fit the bill.

Like Storm said, check xbhp owners experience thread of the bikes you narrow down.

But I might have to decline it since it's costly and/or will weigh much more than I think it will.

Let me confuse you more by Suggesting Bajaj Avenger Cruise 220. The seat is so low it almost feels like a Toy bike. Ride is like a breeze. Priced approx 1 lakhs.

Other option is United Motors Renegade Commando but for that you'll need to shell almost 2lakhs.

Alright added Bajaj Avenger 150 Street in the list. Damn.
One con which I can see right now is that it doesn't have tubeless tires.

Be more specific of your requirement
  • Age
  • Height
  • Intended usage (e.g. Office/College commute, Highway runs)
  • City & Highway percentage usage
  • Approximate Daily / Monthly running
My Suggestion :
Just buy an old 150 cc bike (preferably Bajaj as the prices are low for resale) as your current skill level is not even shifting gears properly, so you will no doubt screw the clutch. Apply, practice and obtain the licence first.
Learn to counter steer and do correct braking (necessary). @Nerevarine is absolutely right. Learn technique first and increase your capacity of bike.

Add helmet and protective gear to your budget.

If you are looking for Avenger then better opt for Avenger cruise 220( not street) as Street 150 & 220 doesn't have kick start.

Also many other models in your list mighn't have kickstart option* only self start*

Bikes without any kickstart are a major hassle specially during winters when your self start won't work and you'll have to run and start your bike.

I own a Street 220, and I counter your statement. I haven't faced a single instance of self issue, ever.
If you maintain your ride well, it will treat you well.

And No, Avenger isn't a toy bike. It may feel or look like a toy bike, but trust me it will take a very skilled person to steer that bike through a narrow or crowded street. Good luck in traffic lol.
It's actually not meant for newbies at all, IMO. Particularly because it has a different style of riding. The braking is entirely different and needs lot of learning, the turning radius, handle rakes, balancing etc etc. Besides, It's a cruiser and not your regular street bike.

I agree with this. Spend some time with a used bike, and learn to ride properly. Just, FYI - riding in traffic of Delhi/NCR can get difficult at times. Needs some skill to ride through the streets and traffic.

Don't own Avenger so can't comment much. But as per my knowledge (and this is for kickless bikes in general and not avenger in particular) the lack of kick start issue arises once the bike gets old say 2-3 years. Or it might arise right after purchase if one fails to start the bike regularly specially during winters. Push starting the bike is a real hassle and not recommended(Speaking from personal experience.)

I am quite surprised when you said you never faced an issue with self start. I consider it true but that's either coz your bike is fairly new (1-2 years) or you have maintained it pretty well(starting it regulary, regular charging) or Avenger's battery never goes down(that I doubt.)

I rode avenger only once and felt like a toy bike since i am used to riding taller ones. But yeah handling in traffic might be an issue.

I am also planning to buy a bike soon but I think i will go with a kick start bike only.

@thatsashok: Your post was good. The newbie thread on xbhp was a great read. Unfortunately there are mostly high level bike discussion. Didn't seem much useful for me.

Age: late 20s
Height: 5.4" (little bit margin of error, but can't be more than that)
Intended usage: It will be mostly used on weekends (since for office, I have cabs). And will also be used by my dad. I don't intend to use it for long drives (although I would want it once I get more comfortable). So, in summary, I would be using bikes mostly on weekends for small distances within city (traffic and highways).
City and Highway percentage usage: I don't live in a secluded location, hence usage of highways will be more. Even if I decide to occasionally drive to office, it's about 16 kms and mostly highway route (so 32 km round trip).
Approximate Daily/Monthly running: Excluding long drives (if any, and since I mostly prefer public transport) I don't think usage will be much.

Yes my current level is not even shifting gears properly, but never in my teens I craved for bike (typical geek) and never in later years I felt the need for (always had office cabs). So I want to start with a good bike head on (not slowly pave my way to a good one). Also, since I earn, I can afford some maintenance cost (but don't want to compromise on quality [and probably looks]).

That video on counter steering got me confused tho. Is it explaining something we do unconsciously? I have rode bicycle a lot when I was teen. I don't think I need to learn a simple thing like "steering". Unless I have been riding bicycles the wrong way all along.
That second video about braking, tells that back wheel brakes are very important, one of the first lesson that was provided to me when I bought my first bicycle as a student. The seller said, "Always use brakes of both wheels together". Except in case of bikes, the brakes of back-wheel is pressed by right leg. So I would need to get use to THAT.

Thanks for the tip to always wear helmet and protective gear. Believe me, I value my life more than you. :p

Suzuki Gixxer SP @ 82k (ex-showroom)

That seems to have a big height and back seat is too high too.
Also with that money I would rather want to buy Yamaha FZ S ver 2.

Dropping Avenger since albeit it's low seat height, I don't think I can handle it on sharp turns.

I promise to take care of my bike, so I can take a chance on self start bikes and although kick start option is good to have, that would not be my criteria for buying.

How about CB Shine 125 SP.

It's very plain looking. :p

@Vyom Were you drunk when you watched the videos ? You were as dumb in answering my post as always

1. When you ride your bike you tend to move it with body weight. At higher speeds bike will resist to move away from straight line. Thats what was explained in video. Counter steering aids in quick changes in direction.

2. Front brake is more important than rear brake. Use them in tandem for more effective braking

Alright, so looking at the seat height as a factor, I have short listed the bikes to below:
Yamaha SZ RR V 2.0
Hero Glamour FI [2017]
Suzuki Gixxer

Comparison (with Yamaha FZ S V 2.0 put in to compare):
Yamaha SZ RR V 2.0 vs Yamaha FZ S V 2.0 vs Hero Glamour FI [2017] vs Suzuki Gixxer - BikeWale

Most of the standard bikes like Discover is plain, as well as high seat height. Both of which are bad for me.

Last weekend I went to a Yamha's bike showroom. I tried sitting on the Yamaha SZ RR V2.0 bike. I was surprised that it was very hard to reach my feet on the ground. I could reach to ground on FZ ver2, but SZ RR was giving me problem.

I asked the salesman that it would be difficult for me to drive this. He told that bike's height can be lowered to about one inch by doing some adjustments. Also the seat will also sink a bit after some driving. I now am wondering if any bike could be made lower easily? Or can only few be customized!?

Don't buy it, even with adjustment it will become a little difficult to ride. In most cases, the ride height adjustment is typically done by changing the suspension settings. Seat sinking isn't going to have any effect.

Yes. Now that you mentioned it, he did say the height adjustment can be done with changing the suspension settings. But if I rule out this bike I am left with little choice. I don't want Avenger too for it's radically different handling. Choosing a bike seems near impossible now.

Thanks for all the people who helped me decide my first bike. Learned a lot! :D

Congrats!!! Ride safe. Buy a good quality helmet and always wear it while riding. If possible, post a brief review of the bike. Have fun.

@Vyom congrats for the purchase. Now go buy a helmet (full face). Plan the additional gear in coming months.

Follow the manual for proper break in procedure for engine / tyre. I recommend do it in ghats (use that round tyre)

Just wondering that even bikes are bought from PayTM nowadays. :wow:
For my first bike, I had to visit all available show rooms in my town and test drive every model I thought of. Then select the one my friend told that it looked good for me.
And my first bike was Yamaha SZ RR V2.0 which was in your initial considerations.

Anyway Congrats on your new bike @Vyom !

I have a full face helmet already. But I do intend to buy a new and quality one. I didn't accept the cheap Rs 700 helmet (brand MTR) which in turn was deducted from the amount I paid for bike. Also I will get gloves, jacket and boots. I intend to ride in full biker fashion. :D
As for the manual, I forgot to take it from dealer. I will get it this weekend along with other documents like RC, Insurance, Number plate etc.

How do I practice in ghats? (From google: a flight of steps leading down to a river).

Yes, bikes are available to be bought from PayTM. Here is the PayTM listing: Here is the PayTM listing for the bike I bought: Book Suzuki Gixxer (Disc) Pearl Mira Red/Glass Sparkle Black (2017 Edition) (Ex-Showroom Price) online at best price in India |Paytm Mall
So in theory I could have bought the bike online and it would have been delivered in few weeks. But I paid at the dealer's shop and the took the bike in person. Digital India. :D

Yamaha SZ RR V2.0 was indeed a good bike. Only height was the concern. Belated congo on your bike. ;)

1. Get atleast ISI certified helmet. I suggest you go for MT helmet as they sell high quality low price helmets. Check out Spartan ProGear Co. - Home for the range and local reseller address. Vega / Steelbird / Axxor / SMK are good too.

2. Jackets and boots are not fashion they are safety.

3. You proved yourself as a dumbwit yet again. Ghats have twisty roads causing you to go the entire gearbox usage (all gears ) and break in engine rpm range.

Cool pics. Just a question - Are you able to place both your feet on the ground while riding it?

Not flat. Just a inch short on either side. My toe reaches though, one side at once, which is enough to control the bike.

@Vyom nice colour selection

Thanks. I had first chosen the color scheme of black with only red as highlights. But when I saw THAT red color scheme in the showroom, I had to change my mind.

It wont be a problem.mostly I also drive my bike with my toes. You can try wearing boots if u like and also do some leg excercises so that u can control the vehicle with your toes.
By the way I have seen 4.8" gurls riding Classic Re comfortably.

By the way what's the mileage?

Yea, riding the bike isn't an issue. The lower seat height does help a bit. Only the passenger suffers. :p
The claims of mileage is high. But I am yet to calculate it for my case. It would take some time to consume the 7 liter petrol that I filled it with since I will only mostly ride on weekends.

Driving on highways consumes less fuel vis a vis driving in city traffic. Also driving at less speed(s40-60 kms) generally consumes less fuel and good for engine life as well

^^ Looks like this thread have served it's purpose. Maybe we will open a new thread to discuss riding bike.
Thanks all of you guys for being in my journey until I find my first love. :D

Cruising on bike in city is tiring, but it's sure a fun experience. I would plan a long distance ride when I become more comfortable. Might even share my journey on my blog and here on TDF. :)
