Any of them for AM2+ socket, or are they all AM3?

^^how does it matter, cuz AM3 works on AM2+ anyways.

But all are AM3.

45W Quad Core is shocking indeed.

I can't wait to get my hands on Athlon II Processors. Its awesome that AMD added the "II" to Athlon K10.5 CPUs.

Hey comp@ddict, I'm planning to make THIS as my choice of upgrade if I get the Quads for under 6K which they probably will come. What about you ? Time to discard "Original Intel" at last ?

Yes, cuz I can't buy a new PC until 1 and half months due to personal reasons.

So this might just be the ultimate choice. With a low price tag, obviously below any of the Phenom II's, this CPU might be a winner, becuz when games are played at 1920x1080, I've noticed that if you just have a 2.6GHz + Quad Core, the procc doesn't matter from there (except in games such a WIC, but who cares about 1 game right?).

Yeah. And even where performance differs, it changes a lot more by getting a better GPU than by getting a bettrer CPU.

I am thinking of something like this in a few months:

GPU:
HD4770 - hopefully it will be 6K by then. If RV800 is released, much better. If I get a 790GX, will CrossFireX on further price drop.

CPU:

AMD Athlon II X4 Energy Efficient Edition 45W CPU or a normal 65W CPU. Will hopefully find a good deal at 6K.

Motherboard:

I am hoping for the ultra cheap overclocking SB710/760G motherboard at 3K to hit India soon. Surely a month or two's wait is enough. OR will see if a cheap AM3 790GX board comes out. DDR3 support will be indeed great, but if not DDR3, DDR2 will do I guess.

RAM:

4GB DDR2 800MHz or 4GB DDR3 1066MHz or 1333MHz depending on price.

Cabinet/PSU:

Still to decide. Will select on the spot.

Monitor:

Samsung 1080p 21.5" TFT with DualDVI video interface and just 40W power consumption - much better than BenQ solution and also has higher contrast ratio.

Me thinking something like:-

Athlon II X4 6xx 65W(non B.E.)
GTX260
785G + SB710
4GB DDR2 CL4
DELL 21.5"

well... some things similar here.

I too am considering GTX260 Core 16. But I have my eyes right now on a price drop from HD4770.

And how much moolah is Dell 21.5" worth ?

As for memory, Zion 2+2 DDR2 1066MHz RAM looks sweet.

Are you sure 785G will be out by the time Athlon II hits the shelves ? That too at a CHEAP price ? Because I only foresee price cuts on 790GX and 780G when 785G arrives. Nothing more.

785G will havd HD4200, but more important is that it will comsume lesser power. My eyes on GTX260 only, as HD4870 falters in front of it especially with the new GeForce drivers, and Dell 21.5" is Rs. 10,500(shipping included).

Ooooh! 785G looks great then.
Dell 21.5" sounds good, since I don't need to pay shipping charges, I am In bangalore, Dell's Indian base :D

PII X2 will have gr8 oc potential, even better than PII x3 and x4.

May 10, 2009 at 1:37 PM
but the Athlon II X2, X3 and X4 are all native, not an X4 with one or two cores disabled, so this core unlocking is limited to Phenom II X3's and hopefully not X2's(I want then to make native dual cores with lesser sale price).

May 10, 2009 at 3:26 PM
And i think that for unlocking the cores we need a compatible motherboard chipset like AMD 790 G .. right?

Me going for AMD 720BE
Jetway HA 07 Ultra
4 GB DDR 2
Confused between GTX 260 and 4870 both have same performance but I do a lot of video encoding so the one that will encode quickly will be my choice

GTX 260 and 4870 have similar performance, but not similar price.
260 is 10K while 4870 is atleast 14K.

So I hope this helps you decide :p

actually cheapest GTX 260 is zotac which will be 10.6 with shipping from lynx and palit one will be 11.3 from itwares.

and HD 4870 512 is 11.7k and 1GB for 13k. 4870 dual sonic OC is 13.2k.
dual sonic oc shud be better than GTX 260 stock, and dual sonic has gr8 cooling and oc capability.
comp@ddict
May 11, 2009 at 9:00 PM
dual sonic oc has only this:-

Core - 750 MHz(stock)
Memory - 950 MHz(stock = 900MHz)

So that means I should go for GTX 260.. right??

And what about GTX 275 and 4890.. i'm also interested in those cards.. but suppose if I go for AMD's 7850 X2, i think that the processor will become a bottleneck..

HD4890 is nothing more than a tweaked HD4870. Leave alone GTX 260. Reason

Get 2x MSI HD 4770 @ Rs 14K & Run them in cross fire & get performance simillar to GTX 280 ( & sometime even better ) which costs Rs. 22K :p

So time for going into a pure AMD based rig :p

X2 7850 is pure bottleneck. ull need atleast and x3 720 to keep ur cpu away from being bottlenecked

@topgear.. awesome suggestion dude.. and i forgot that the board that i'm going to get also has Crossfire support (Jetway HA 07 Ultra).. i hope that the two 4770's will also speed up my encoding process of videos..

GTX 260 Core 216 should be enough to game with 30-40fps atleast on most games with high settings @ 1920x1080.

And BTW, WHY 7850x2 ? Why a 95W power-holic dual core which is a black edition but can't even overclock like an old E2140 ?

Why not E5200 or similar ? Better yet, you can wait for E6300 2.0 :D

Wait for Athlon II X2 and Phenom II X2 to arrive then
You got no other choice till then bro.
Because if you go for AMD now, you will regret it later.
95W dual cores are so not cool.

And yeah, at 1080p gaming, CPU wouldn't be a bottleneck. A Core i7 960 would perform only slightly better, by 5-10 FPS in exteme case, compared to P7850BE.

GTX260 is more capable. In short, it can play EVERY game except CRYSIS and CRYSIS Warhead at FULL HD with no stutterring.

Not even that much, only maybe if u're using 2x GTX295 or 2x HD4870x2, only then would Core i7 be a help, but when the frame rate is above 60 already, how much sense does it make to add more cards to get it over a not at all needed 100!

Initially I was considering this configuration

AMD 720 BE
Jetway HA 07 Ultra
2*2 GB DDR2 800 MHz RAM
4870 or GTX 260
2*250 GB in RAID 0 (Already have one 250 GB HDD will add another and RAID em)

But this thread diverted my mind from the Phenom II 720 BE

ROFL
Then stick to 720BE.

And BTW, if gaming is your sole activity, then I suggest waiting.

I and comp@ddict need some guy's company for waiting for Athlon II :D

I can wait... i have 8th sem exams in June.. so will buy the rig in July...

No.. gaming is not my sole activity.. i do a lot of work on Linux.. so compatibility was a issue back when I was learning Linux.. not now.. i can make stuff work.. but still ACPI and other things needs to be supported under Linux..

Also.. i transcode videos a lot.. so the graphics card needs to be fast.. currently my 8600 GT takes around 7 mins to convert a 22 min episode of The Big Bang Theory :D for iPod touch.. i want to bring that barrier under 2-3 mins..

More reason to either wait or go AMD. AMD southbridges have some weird issues which have been widely discussed in phoronix.com.

And BTW, for the same reason, i.e, linux related stuff like excessive compiling, I am waiting for an Athlon II X4 Quad Core. I want maximum threads/cores for minimum money.

More reason to get GTX 260 Core 216.

If you had gone for HD4770 CF, performance may not have been as good because dual GPU assisted encoding sucks.

And nVidia has better Linux support than ATI though ATI is catching up fast in Gaming, it still has issues elsewhere. Like video acceleration.

this one's true, but not entirely.

The only site which provides REAL linux reviews of hardware is phoronix.com and they still rate AMD as bad in linux support.

Though gaming is awesome in AMD by now, compared to nVidia, video acceleration, video encoding, XGL (graphics card based desktop rendering), and 2D graphics are all better done by nVidia.

And the only way this will be fixed is by future kernel upgrades which are going to (hopefully) have on-the-fly video device switching and SLi/CF like usage of various video devices together for different purposes at same time. This technology is possible, but needs lots of working to be implemented. Once its done, onboard GPU can decode video at the same time while main GPU is busy running a game.
