i want to connect INTERNET in ubuntu9.10. i am able to ping in my address. i try the pppconfig and use dynamic address. also other things as default but i am not able to connect in ubuntu. also 1 year ago i try ubuntu as timepass and that time i got INTERNET working in first try. i don't know what i am doing wrong. i have bsnl home combo 199 plan. my modem is siemens c2110 (wired). i also tried sudo pon provider. also if somebody have ubuntu + bsnl broadband than please give me some clues about ur pppconfig settings.

What does the Network Manager applet of GNOME say about your wired connection? Does it say connected? (look at top right corner)

If not, Configure eth0 through GNOME network manager manually with the following settings:

IP: 192.168.1.2, Gateway: 192.168.1.1, Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
DNS: 4.2.2.2

Then re-run pppoeconf through sudo pppoeconf. And then, sudo pon dsl-provider ...

THANKYOU

ico. now i am typing this from ubuntu. now i only have to install graphics driver from latest svn. can you teach me what this line is saying?

svn checkout *svn.openchrome.org/svn/trunk openchrome
cd openchrome
./autogen.sh --prefix=/usr
make
and finally: sudo make install
also how to backup & restore

these files
/usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/openchrome_drv.so
and /usr/lib/libchromeXvMC*so* files

^ No problem.

btw, before helping you, I would like you to post the output of this command:
lspci | grep VGA

H

utput of this command:
lspci | grep VGA is this--
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. K8M800/K8N800/K8N800A [S3 UniChrome Pro] (rev 01)

my chipset is k8m800.

^ Fine. Don't use the Unichrome drivers. VIA has actually released official drivers for your onboard graphics.

First do this: sudo apt-get install build-essential
This will install all the necessary packages which one requires for compiling.

Download the driver from here: *www.viaarena.com/displaydrivers.aspx?PageID=1&OSID=60&CatID=3650&SubCatID=109
Extract it and see the instructions.

H

is this driver provide 3d acceleration and compatible with ubuntu 9.10. if not than I will want to use non-official openchrome driver. please give me your valuable advice.

I think it should. If not, then whats the point of VIA releasing the driver.

H

i follow these instruction from read me.
How To Compile VIA Xorg driver

1. Check your current working directory is XServer, if not change it to be

2. Generate configure file automatically, enter

chmod +x autogen.sh

./autogen.sh

3. Compile VIA Xorg driver, enter

make

But this was happened. what i am doing wrong.

user@ubuntu:~/via-xserver-86a-50283_src/XServer$ chmod +x autogen.sh ./autogen.sh
user@ubuntu:~/via-xserver-86a-50283_src/XServer$ make
make: *** No targets specified and no makefile found. Stop.
user@ubuntu:~/via-xserver-86a-50283_src/XServer$

the result of ls -l command is
-rwxr-xr-x 1 user user 251 2009-07-13 21:24 autogen.sh
-rwxr-xr-x 1 user user 4537 2009-08-18 22:08 configure.ac

drwx------ 2 user user 4096 2009-08-04 01:36 src

please help. also readme file says that it is compatible with other via chipsets.

also by doing this command i think i have all dependencies satisfied.
sudo apt-get build-dep xserver-xorg-video-openchrome
i tried the method from here:

it shows this via-xserver-86a-50283_src file in green colour.
what i do is linux too hard. or even make me able to Compile VIA Xorg driver.

also i try $ gksudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf but it shows empty xorg.conf.

H

hi eco i find that latest ubuntu 9.10 comes & use openchrome by default but it uses an old version of it.
and does not provide 3d acceleration. so at least help me to solve this:
wget *www.openchrome.org/releases/xf86-video-openchrome-latest.tar.gz
tar xvzf xf86-video-openchrome-latest.tar.gz
cd xf86-video-openchrome-<version number>
./configure --prefix=/usr
make
sudo make install

but after make it says harshit@ubuntu:~/xf86-video-openchrome-0.2.904$ make
make: *** No targets specified and no makefile found. Stop.
so tell me what to do.

Leave aside OpenChrome. Try the VIA driver.

*help.ubuntu.com/community/OpenChrome#VIA proprietary graphics driver

These things actually get subjective as I have never had VIA graphics.

H

thanks for your help. karmic is not comes with xorg.conf
