My config --

Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 @ 2.13ghz

Gigabyte G41

Corsair DDR 3 -- 4gb

FSP Saga II -- 500W

Msi 460gtx Cyclone -- 1gb

I am having a weird problem... My computer doesnt boot when i first press power button, the fan inside starts spining for around 10secs then it stops. After trying multiple times it boots normal, but it completely shuts down itself as if somebody have pulled the plug from behind and it happens randomly. I dont what the problem is ? It cant be over heating as my processor is fitted with Coolermaster heatsink. my idle temp is around 40*C and load is around 65*C. I have tried to start without the gfx card but still happening, i have also tried to power up in another socket, same thing.. I know my pc is old which i will be changing end of year... is it my psu ??

Thanx in advance !!

most probably PSU problem.. check with other PSU. else may be BIOS Problem.

Most probably it is a problem caused by RAM module.
1. Reset BIOS
2. Run Memtest86+ and see if there is any error with the RAM module or not.

I have the exact issue with my system too which started three days ago. The common thing between your PC and mine is FSP Saga II 500W PSU. The PSU is the culprit here. I have temporarily installed a local PSU and have ordered a Cooler Master GX450W 450Watts PSU. The system is working fine on the local PSU.

How I read your situation:
You had a somewhat good PSU. You are using worst possible PSU and you have ordered another bad PSU.

@OP

Monitor the temp of not just Processor but other places also, check with temo monitoring software and see if your motherboards N/S bridge is heating up ??

I have similar issue with my older Nvidia 650i based board, while cleaning or installing new RAM i accidentally unhocked the second Heat sink over the N/S bridge and that was lose. Which was heating up and thus causing the issue !!

Well i read the same review before getting this. My FSP Saga II 500w died in just over two years, therefore FSP is in my personal black list now :eek:

Moreover the 5 yrs warranty given by Cooler Master pulled me more to selecting this.

Borrow a corsair PSU from any friend, test your system.
Otherwise you can also send the motherboard for RMA.

1. Check temperature from BIOS.
and, you completely ignored my suggestion of running memtest86+

@OP

Try taking out the CMOS/BIOS battery then start the PC after that shutdown again , then place the battery in then start again ! may some values in BIOS may not be changed .

yes try resetting through BIOS. This sounds more like a BIOS issue or mobo has problem in power supply jack.
Also try clean up and checking RAMs one by one in all the slots.

guys I tried everything i knew, did everything you guys told me to do even tried running memtest which failed !! but i did ran the bios memtest result came with no errors few days back. the temp of both the cores are well below danger limit.. but still coudnt find the reason behind shutting down itself..

now to my horror my pc is now completely dead for last 4 days.. no bios no display nothing.. i even tried starting up without ram and gfx card got nothing no beep at all.. absolute silence.. i am frustrated to my core... so i took upto computer repair shop just to get a professional view.. they also agreed that its a motherboard failure and told me to get it replace in gigabyte repair center.
Now what i want to know, can i ask for a better series like p43 or g43 based motherboard coz i am afraid it might happen again if they replace or repair it.. I am wiling to pay whatever extra money for those series.. if i can ? do tell me some good motherboard from gigabyte on 775 socket..

^^ you will get a motherboard based on your current chipset and it's on sell and available on the market - so no chance for a upgrade option.

@@ SKillz: If you can plonk in some cash, i'd advise this the correct time to move away from the Core 2 Duo..the C2d simply isnt cut out for the job any more. You will re-use the ram and if possible ask for any lga 1155 socket board as RMA assuming you have warranty ...already 775 boards are rare and by chance mayybe the rma centre will be willing to give u a current lga 1155 socket mobo..Poochne mein kya jaata hain ? :D
Sell off the C2d and get a i3 2120/2100 :)

Incase you have to stick with a 775 soln, well the g41 S2p is the only thing thats available for 775 ,ddr3

And for ur psu, i assume its the stock version with a single pci-e power connector.Yes it will suffice

@aloondum : I am willing to give extra money for better board same socket lke P43 or g43, if he agrees but chances are very slim :p .. i even planing to change my procy to quad core may be if i get a good second hand deal...any how i am changing my whole pc by mid next year so i just need to squeeze it some how :)

@ OP - heard lots of issues about FSP Saga II 500W - so if you need to upgrade something change the PSu and get something like Corsair GS600 @ 4.8k

i am little worried.. coz PC was running fine for last 4months as soon as i put 460 its dead in less den a month.. Is it coincidence or related to gfx card ? Btw i use my PC heavily.. i do gaming as well as heavy work in MAYA.... n I put it on download almost every alternate nights..

Yea i am looking to change my psu but not immediately as i want a new HDD badly... so can i wait a bit?

@ aloodum : i will ask for better 775 soln as i am afraid this might happen again... otherwise i have no problem with this board.. i dont know its stock or not its MSI 460GTX Cyclone Ed 1GB (*www.msi.com/product/vga/N460GTX-Cyclone-1GD5-OC.html)

^^^ mate theres no gurantee that a premium product wont fail as soon.Take in to consideration 2 factors:
1. You chances of getting a new rma-ed premium 775 board is close to nill..Its EOL for 775..no wonder rma centres will be lacking the same.
2. Even budget boards have decent build quality...Most of them use solid state caps and decent VRM, a far cry from the bloated electrolytic capacitors we saw in earlier budget boards(Criminals: biostar, mercury right down to the g31's :p)
Regarding ur gpu, if it uses a single pci-e connector then your well within safety limits.

FSP SAGA II is a budget smps,, IIRC it has a dual 12V rail...12V1 for CPu/Aux and 12V2 for periperhal devices,pci-e, with each rail having a definite current carrying capacity. To get an idea about actual draw, look for the 12V total wattage and divide by 12...thast ur total draw..say its written as 384W..dats 32 Amps..32 amps divided on 2 rail...I assume say 18A on 12V1 and another 16A on rail2.

Now since you have a c2d 2.13, its not a real guzzler, so ur V1 rail will have a low amp draw, while ur card and other componets(howsoever low) will draw everything from the secondary rail...
That means your 2nd rail is always loaded with demand from GPu and ur drives..even if say the load current needed was 19 A, the second rail wont be able to deliver more than 16, while V1 rail is still sipping cola on the beach :)
This leads to triggering of the over current proction on that rail..result shutdown :D

Bad Design? You bet and it happens.. Just because your card packet says 26A needed on the 12V and your PSu reads 12V1 14 +12 V2 14...its will comply..nopes
that 26A is the system wide specs..like gpu sir saying "okay let cpu sir guzzle 6 Amps but i want bloody 20 A on what eva bloody rail you are feeding me" ;)

And not helping your case is that even FSP's higher end products havent got a good review..like Everest..they have been known for cutting corners by mixing capacitors from unknown low grade suppliers and others...

Check if the RAM is inserted properly if it dont solves then your PSU is the culprit try changing the PSU of your PSU with yours friends/relatives and check if its working

@aloodum : they said they wont be able to provide any other board on this solution.. So m cool with it, it will take a week or so. but i need to figure it out what was the problem so that it doesnt happen again..
btw thanx a lot for the detailed information regarding power distribution..

Well i have looked into FSP box it says total +12V1 + 12V2 Max output is 408 W, V1= 18A, V2 = 18A.
I also looked into card packet it says minimum req is 24A.

So what are you suggesting basically is that i should change my psu to better as its not able to provide required power... m i correct ? but i have once started it with my old psu (local) without gfx card and same thing happen POOF!!! gone.. dead.. silent ...

@101gamzer : my mobo was dead so i already sent it for RMA today :) there was no boot no beep even if i took out ram, i have even tried to start up with other psu but same result.

@topgear : thanx for the suggestion... :)
