well my sister downloaded ubuntu and now i have no trace of windows in my computer i was wondering if a simple windows xp restore disk would fix my problem its from the computer manufacture hp pavilion dv1659us and there charging me 15 dollars for the restore cd so im wondering will this work
What I understand is that you've accidentally selected the wrong option during Ubuntu install - USE ENTIRE DISK.
Also, it seems that HP didn't give you any restore disks instead went the cheaper way of creating a Restore partition which was apparently deleted as explained above. Get yourself an XP installation disk and install. I'm not sure if the product key on the underside of the laptop will work. But you can nevertheless try. You are on your own now to find the drivers of the laptop hardware.
Use some software like Unknown device identifier after installing XP to get details about the hardware present in your laptop and hunt for driver. Get UDI here: *www.zhangduo.com/udi.html
