problem when trying to run dos based applications in win xp

i get an error like this,
16 bit windows subsystem
c:\windows\system\autoexec.nt the file is not suitable to run on this file system and ms dos....
what is the solution to this problem and cause for it

perfom the steps in the Microsoft website
