Weird. I have same card and never had issues. Check with latest driver or WHQL Driver

Yeah new cards still have issues. Update to the latest, and hope it solves your issues, atleast a bit.

Are the gpu temperatures ok?
Just a hunch...try disabling onboard audio from the bios and then see if the problem repeats.

Try updating all the drivers including motherboard. Try doing a BIOS update.
Dunno if this will work but its worth a try.

Seems to be heating issue
Also try to use a good quality PSU like zebronics platinum series or Corsair VX550 PSU

Does a cable need to go from the PSU to the gfx card?

no,8600gt's don't require any external power,it draws all its power from pci-e slot.

Since XP is whining about the driver, you need not look elsewhere for the problem.
There is a probability that the crash recurs only a particular point in the game. If this is the case, you can conclude that the game code is also to blame. Check for this too.
What you can do is stop all other programs and services, and then try playing the game. Also reducing the resolution (for that particular troublesome level) sometimes helps.
