I use an internet connection through a proxy server. Do I need a separate firewall on my machine for security?

Well buddy security is something which is always less no matter how much resources you allocate for it. :)

Once you are online whether it be through a proxy server or a direct connection , there is always a risk of security breaches.

This is where Firewalls can help in preventing/controlling such risks. :)

It is especially important to provide the requisite security measures for your system if you are involved with sensitive data.

proxy server means no security at all and more if u use anonymous free pubic proxies
well the sftware like zone alarm will protect u by using friewall ..better to optimize ur connection speed instead of proxy servers
