ddr - double data rate . working speed - ( all in Mhz )
ddr 1 -- 266 , 333 , 400
ddr2-- 533 , 667 , 800 (I think )
i think only ddr 1 & 2 are for mobo's ( to attach to mobo ) ram .
ddr3 and ddr4 are gddr's ( on ur graphics card )

ddr3 is a new thing that is going to come soon the mian difference is that ddr2 is faster than ddr and ddr2 can run at higher clock speeds than the ddr can run. I think in ddr the maximum speed is 400 or 533 mhz whereas in ddr2 there is uptil 800mhz stats from 533mhz. But there are new 1066mhz ddr2 rams coming up...

their operating (or clock) frequency is the main difference

u need two identical ram sticks to run them into dual channel! (double of their normal bandwidth)
