all the directories have become read only in my system

new directories are also as read only

i am not able to edit any of them

even attrib doesnt work

please advice

check for viruses...or trojens

A virus (I think its Nimda) also results in such conditions, where all folders r set to read-only!
So can ur computer with a good anti-virus.

Have you scanned ? What were the results ?
