Hi all
I need a bike for "daily" commute of about 80km (2-5 days a week ). It should be robust and fuel efficient. I am a n00b in biking, So kindly give your suggestions. Budget is 30k-50k (preferably below 42k).

Get a Pulsar 150... imho, of course.

Shine is a good one. fairly refined angine and gearbox, plus good mileage.
But for 80km single stretch, i wud go with the unicon or GS150R, as both gives good riding sitting posture for long ride and gr8 mileage on highways bout 65+.

^ ^ ^
It's 40 km up and down each actually. Which would be better Unicorn or GS150R?
(EDIT: GS150R is way beyond my budget)
Also which has better service Suzuki or Honda?

As for Splendour, dont like its looks.

Pulsar I don't really want. Nothing wrong with it really but it's just so common nowadays... :p

BTW Sorry for this n00bish question but why 150cc bike?

^With 150cc u can easily cruise at 70~80 range without straining the engine....which is essential for long drives

GSR150 is better than unicorn, it has 6th gear, good mileage, more goodies like two trip meters..etc
It also slightly smoother than unicorn

In 125cc yamaha gladiator is good....it has 5th gear

Jul 15, 2009 at 1:56 AM
But GSR150 costs 60000+ right at least according to review (can anybody confirm?). That's way beyond my budget.
BTW Mouteshut.com reviews that top speed of Unicorn is 60kmph. Is that true?

EDIT: Looks like I should reconsider Pulsar.

According 2 ur needs unicorn is d perfect bike but considering cost shine is gud
And other 125 cc byks
Glamour : xcellent byk but looks too stylish
Stunner : hot height and cool perfect byk little costly
Bajaj Xcd135 : gud byk but nt many like it cheaper than others
Yamaha Gladiator : before buying any byk plz test drive this byk its awesome (i like it) .has no resale value.
I wud say better get 125 cc bcoz u wud b going lot far as u stated and powerlag wil make ur biking boring and painful.
If u cummute only in city then
Get a HH passion pro my uncle bought it yesterday gud byk looks cool and as hero honda its quite relaible
Best of luck

60kmph?
it might be the avg speed :)
ive crossed 120kmph on unicon before.

In my place honda is horrible. U ll need to wait atleast 6 months for the bike delivery after booking. And service aint that commendable either.

my vote for GS.
Also have a look at touring spirit. :) dun know how its on road. If it has same gearbox/transmission as in FZ16/S , stay away as they aint for cruising. It ll cross 75k mark in price.

GS>Unicon>Gladiator>Shine>XCD 135

If you are buying a 150cc Bike, i would suggest you to buy Unicorn, for its smooth Engine, mileage, and u don't need much of a maintainence for it.

I have been using Unicorn for the past 3 years and have covered a distance of 36000km. Still the engine is smooth, and i have not faced any issues with the bike. I daily travel 40km (20km one side from home to office).

Pulsar I don't really want. Nothing wrong with it really but it's just so common nowadays... :p

BTW Sorry for this n00bish question but why 150cc bike?

EDIT: Looks like I should reconsider Pulsar.

I switched from a splendor to a pulsar about three years ago... there is no denying that these bikes were 'sweet spot' machines... hitting the right balance between cost, performance, fuel economy and looks.

Why is the pulsar so common? because it's GOOD... it looks nice, performs well and gives great fuel economy with its dtsi engine...

I may be sounding fanboy and i apologise for that but sales figures dont lie, and they are the best indicator of any commodities worth. Though Hero Honda remains the largest seller of motorcycles overall, the pulsar is the largest selling model.

I dont mean to imply other models are trash... its all about your individual priorities.

eg- if you consider fuel economy as the supreme consideration, by all means select a 100/125cc bike...the passion/splendor nxg/gladiator all are more economical than the pulsar.

On the other hand, if looks are most important to you... I say raise your budget a bit and buy a bullet, you may think differently... looks cant be measured unlike fuel economy, acceleration and price.

If you are really strapped for cash for purchase, a 100cc bike like Dawn/ Platina will serve you well.

Finally, for performance, it has to be 150cc or more...Pulsar, Achiever, Fiero, Unicorn are your options...

I , and the market, have found the pulsar to be a nice balance beween all of the above.

But of course, it's your money.

I can assure you I have seen owners vociferously defending their purchases no matter what. That proves that irrespective of what market statistics, critics, friends or people on message boards say... the best bike is always that which you ultimately buy with you hard earned money...

All the best.

I'm sure you must have seen this but nevertheless, a link>>>>Motorcycle comparisons

Pulsar might be good, by i second with the krate's point. There wont be an attraction for a too common bike.
When i bought my FZ 16, in the first week of its launch itself almost a min of 10 people used to ask me feeds every day and almost everyone on road was staring at it.
You can have the same if you go for Fazer, in sacrifice of mileage. I get a pathetic 35~40KMpl, but its ok considering my kind of rash driving.

again GS>Unicon>Pulsar>Fazer.
but all are above the budget. You have to stretch it by 15~20k.

If you are stict on budget

I don't much care on looks. As long as it looks OK it's fine for me.
I have shortlisted on Gladiator, Shine, HH Glamour, Unicorn, Pulsar, GSR150. (I really have to increase my budget for latter three, let's see what can I do [:D])

I am currently leaning on Yamaha Gladiator, but how is its service? In Delhi and Gurgaon, I mean. Also are the auxillary parts readily available for it?
Also I don't want a bike that needs high maintenance.

^ Unicorn FTW!! It will suit your needs very well, if you can just increase your budget by a few more grand! :p

The riding position is very comfortable, ideal for those long commutes. It has enough power and also delivers decent fuel consumption figures. Maintenance ain't a problem either - the Honda badge is synonymous with quality. The parts are not that expensive and there are lots of service centers all over the country. The latest version has fixed several problems from previous generatons of the Uni.

Go for Unicorn..I am a proud owner of it for the last 3 years..no problems till now, engine is terribly smooth and mileage is good..u get 60+ in hiways and 55+ in normal city conditions. When I bought this 3 years bac, everybody used to ask me hw the bike fairs and askd abt mileage..tht too in the signals..was very proud those days.
Go for it, u wil nevr regret ur decision later.

dude i have made 2 longs trips with my unicorn ... from delhi to chail in himachal pradesh and delhi to kasuali again in himachal pradesh approx rode the bike 750 kms on both the trips, my bike is more than 3 yrs old now. and mileage i got in the highway was 60+65 kmpl, i was riding around 90-100 kmph .. so if you can increase ur budget unicorn is the bike....
very very less maintenance cost .. trust me on this...

Thats a very funny joke .on this 6th july, i wid my 5 friends went for a long tour and we covered 230kms in 3 hours and we never went below 80kmph and most of the time 95-110, i was riding apache and my friends were having pulsar and unicorn. I got a mileage of 35kmpl and the pulsar guy got 30 and unicorn got 38 .

Its impossible for you to get 65kmpl if you are averageing at around 90kmph .fuel consumption at that speed doubles so there is no way to get 65kmpl unless u ride @55-60kmph on highways.

i own an FZ 16, its just an awesome bike in all category, but in mileage :(

and it suits short people much better than ny other bike. Its a fat kinda bike, but too easy for the foot. Im 173cm, but many opf my frens around 164cm says, its much easier to handle and to stand on foot too.
Moreover it has the weight of just ny other 125cc bike, ie 124KG [same as glamour], while most other 150 cc bikes are 145KG+.

DO you want ny more opinion?

thanks ... i was waiting for an opinion from you guys ...
i m jus having second thoughts abt fz 16 because of its cost. 73k is too much for me :|
this site says unicorn costs arnd Rs. 54k
*www.surfindia.com/automobile/honda-unicorn.html
unicorn price wise seems ok. but i m not too sure i will be able to handle the beast.
it was quite late whn i went to honda showroom on sat and that fellow had closed it. i will need to sit on it and see if i can get my foot on the ground comfortably.

any other comments? m confused....

Unicorn is no beast. I have an old -first lot- CBZ (not star or extreme). And that is definitely heavier and taller than the unicorn. I've also put in a Karizma piston !

FZ is all looks, is what i've heard from some of my biker friends. Someone in the group recently bought the Suzuki 150 cc 6 speed bike, i dont know the name. They said its good. And 6 to 7k cheaper than FZ. If you want to go in for tried n tested then Pulsar is always an option.

I would say go for xcd 135.

Or the newly released discover 100, if mileage is so important to you. I own a discover 135, it is a really good bike. Robust, comfortable, quite good engine, economy of around 50 kmpl. It also has a longer wheelbase, so it is comfortable, especially if you are tall

all 3 bikes ... i v read pulsar, fz16 and unicorn v a 790mm seat height.(i knw not many of you wud v bothered to look :) )

i got a chance to sit on a pulsar (not ride it) belonging to an acquaintance of mine.

both my feet reach the ground like this!! :(

*img194.imageshack.us/img194/8915/toeriselateral.th.jpg

i dont have any problem handling it in normal equilibrium conditions. but i m not too sure how things will be whn i will need to control the bike when standing in signals and with a pillion rider.

cutting the seat by arnd 5mm is an option.
my friend after a long thought said, i sud be able to manage it (without cutting the seat) n get used to it in a week's time. probably didnt want to hurt me.
your honest thoughts plz.

apache ,FZ and unicorn are bikes which have great control which pulsar lacks and i hav heard countless incidents where ppl hav accident on their pulsars bcoz of the front disk getting locked up pretty soon even widout panic braking.

i test drove unicorn tdy.
went to yamaha to look @ fz16. i find it way to huge for someone as thin as me, though lighter. bro didnt like it at all. so thats ruled out.
a tvs showroom here now has changed to a suzuki one. so cud not look @ apache. drove gs150R, n found its seat is slightly higher than unicorn meaning only my big toe hits the ground.:|
went to bajaj. tested pulsar and discover 135.i liked both.
on all bikes (unicorn, pulsar, discover) my foot hits the ground as depicted in the pic in my abv post.
cud not test apache as i cud not find a tvs showroom in my area. the one which was there has got converted to a suzuki one.

i m confused, i like unicorn > pulsar 150 > bajaj discover 135 > honda shine
i find discover much easier to handle while pushing and hoisting it on the stand n things.

meanwhile is the unicorn seat long n wide enough to seat ladies Indian style?both legs one side. ever tried anyone?

on road prices in panvel (navi mumbai)
Pulsar 150 Rs.66184
discover 135 Disc Rs.56200
discover 135 Drum Rs. 53000
unicorn Rs.64080

all in all my heart says unicorn head says discover 135 since i find it easier to manage it.
well if i do think abt discover which one to go for, drum break or disc?
quite a lot of questions. can u plz take time to help :)

apache seat too is bit lower than pulsar, as per my experience.
and FZ jst looks bigger coz its fat. Actually its length, weight etc are lower than pulsar/unicon GS150 or even discover. And i found footing the ground easiest on FZ, then RTR an so on.
on FZ, u feel too much stich to the machine, as the rider is sitting in a dip b/w the huge tank and raised pillion seat. Handling is the best in 150cc class, though i dun commend on mileage.:-D

I found the brakes best on FZ, mainly due to better road grip as it got wide tyres front and rear, and also due to the larger front disc [larger than all 150cc and same as R15s].

Apache RTR also has the same sized 270mm front disc brakes and infact better than FZ coz they r petal discs but FZ beats apache in braking by a small margin just coz of the wider tyres

so 161cm means u r 5"3 inches tall... u can ride most of the 150cc once u get ur hands used to it...ya will have little hard time with a (heavy) pillion rider thats it....

in 150cc apache is best fr u....

so try to test it well for urself b4 buying...make sure ur comfortable....judge how u wud feel once ur better acquanted wit it...dont try double ride so soon...gud luk...let us know ur decision!

honda fellow if i pay the 64k in one go then the waiting is 30-35 days and if i take a loan from HDFC the waiting is 8-10 days. i dont understand the logic...

Why no one is giving a though to newly launched TVS SR 125, its looks good on paper, atleast much better looking then any Discover(IMO), TVS has claimed so and so tech for the mileage. Has enough power(10.5 BHP). AfaiK it costs 46k ex-showroom, so it should be 52k+ on road. matches all the criteria of OP. though I don't know the realty, just read on various site.
