Request: Make Digit forum free mobile app for Android

Anybody who have experience in making apps please respond by sending a PM to the forum Admin. I mean who are interested in making a stand-alone android app for this forum.

Thanks,
bssr

In either case, making an app will be quite an endeavour. You should consider contracting some app development company to develop it.

But why? You don't like Tapatalk?

I guess BSS is talking about Digit forum free mobile app, not the forum or tapatalk.

Does not seem so. Check the bold part of his post. Maybe he's not aware about tapatalk.

I have been using Tapatalk only for a long while. It does everything you need to do. Making a standalone app feels redundant.

I second the idea of an app for our forum too.
Tapatalk is becoming bad with time. I am facing few issues in Tapatalk mainly:
> It's a generic app made to use multiple forums. But I only use one forum. And for that it's an overkill bloat.
> Can't remove the "sent by Tapatalk" signature. Previously I could remove it. They removed the option to remove the signature now. So now I have to post something, then edit the post to remove the signature. I don't like it.
> I can't even login to TDF now. Since the forum doesn't keep me login for more than a month (is there a setting to disable that?), and my dual authentication is on, it asks me to enter the dual authentication code. But even if I enter the code sent to me on email, it just doesn't accept the code. I get an error: "The two step verification value could not be confirmed." (Screenshot: *i.imgur.com/GN9XhMS.jpg). I even tried to enter the code generated by Google Authenticator app. Just. Doesn't. Accept.

Making an app though still isn't easy. Especially if you want to capture all the functionality of the forum.

You'd need at least two teams of people, one to expose the forum db as a RESTful web service API (assuming one isn't already there, though I think Tapatalk uses a similar API to interface with the forum) so that the app can make these calls to carry out functions such as creating posts, registering, replying, reporting, etc. The second team would work on the actual app, creating the UI and implementing calls to the API exposed by the RESTful web service.

Since there are a lot of functionality to be covered in development, plus ensuring security and no bugs means that a properly organized effort needs to be planned and executed. I don't think this would be good enough for a volunteer force of developers, especially with no centralized guidance and management.

That is why I think that contracting professional developers would be a much more feasible option in this case since they will deliver faster, fix the bugs and also provide future support for the app if needed.

Not saying that volunteers can't build the app. This is also doable, but this will definitely require someone with a lot of spare time on their hands.

May be a simple webapp (wrapper for the mobile site) will suffice. Is there a separate mobile version even or does the same code adapts to smaller screens?

This can literally be just the whole app in Cordova.

You can remove the signature.
You need to clear cache and data for the last point.

Replying by TT, is it showing the siggi?

May be only Pro version of Tapatalk allows you to remove signature?

I am using the non pro version. Spending 650rs. for this app isn't worth it.

I tried out from Firefox for Android yesterday. It feels good.

A wrapper for the mobile site should be good enough.

Funny. Since I have purchased the pro version in the past. Tapatalk was that good.
But since then they have discontinued the pro version, and gave a "badge" for those users who earlier purchased the pro version. IDK what the badge do, but it sure doesn't help with the issues that have cropped up recently.
I am down for a wrapper of mobile site. It doesn't have to be full fledge app.

Curious, but why an app ? What all does 'add link to home screen' option lack ?

Also suggestion: instead of 'develop for free' , try 'develop and get showcased as forum app developer'

I use Firefox Mobile. I keep many tabs open. Clicking that link launches Firefox with all the tabs.

Somebody please respond on this.
I love this forum and am deeply worried about its state of affairs now.
At least a stand alone google play store Digit App might bring some fresh air into this forum along with opening a separate bazaar section like in Tech Enclave forum or Erodov forum.
Also Trophies needs to be updated as well.

Like I said, its a huge endeavour and you will need volunteers who have lots of time on their hands, especially who know app development and web services at the very least. I doubt there are many of such people in this forum. I could help with web services, but I hardly have time myself these days due to work.

Building a webview app seems to be not so difficult. I managed to get a debug-apk build using instructions from here
in under an hour. (I am not a programmer, this is my first rodeo). There are some minor issues but a person who has even a little knowledge can fix those I guess.

And thanks to the responsive forum software it works. I am not sure if notifications can be handled though.

A webview is no different than running the webpage on a mobile browser. So the functionality and features will be the same as the web page.
