I ve bought a seagate sata drive, but my board is intel D845 GVSR-which has no sata ports. Is it risky to use a sata to ide converter.

don't use sata to ide converter. I had tried it with my old 845 based system but did not work. I'd advice u to go for Pci-Sata card i.e its a PCI card with sata interface.
The one which i bought had 4 sata ports. Its was around Rs. 700/-.
