The PlayStation 5 (PS5) is an upcoming home video game console developed by Sony Interactive Entertainment. Announced as the successor to the PlayStation 4 in 2019, its launch is scheduled for late 2020. The system will launch in two varieties, as a base PlayStation 5 system that will include an optical disc reader, which can play 4K Blu-Ray discs, as well as a Digital Edition without the drive.

Hardware
The PlayStation 5 uses AMD's 7nm Zen 2 microarchitecture with 8 CPU cores running at a variable frequency capped at 3.5 GHz.[10] The GPU is a customized system-on-a-chip (SoC) based on AMD's RDNA 2, featuring 36 compute units running at a variable frequency, capped at 2.23 GHz, and capable of 10.28 TFLOPS.[10] Both the CPU and GPU are monitored by a special boost system incorporating AMD's SmartShift technology that adjusts the frequency of these systems based on the current activities of both chips, to target ideal constant power drawn and a model SoC performance profile. For example, if the CPU is running at lower activity, the boost system may reduce its frequency and increase the frequency of the GPU to allow that GPU to run at higher performance without otherwise affecting power use or cooling. The GPU supports hardware acceleration of real-time ray traced rendering.[5] It has a new audio technology called Tempest Engine, which allows not only for hundreds of sound sources within a game to be accounted for in producing audio output compared to 50 for the PlayStation 4, but also how that audio is presented based on the end user's device and preferences. The system has 16 GB of GDDR6 SDRAM with a bandwidth of 448 GB/s.

A custom SSD storage solution was designed for the PlayStation 5 to increase data input/output rates for fast loading times and larger bandwidth. This speed allows games to be more immersive and to support 8K resolution. The base system has a 825 GB SSD connected via a 12-channel interface to the main system, achieving a 5.5 GB/s transfer rate uncompressed, and between 8 to 9 GB/s using compression with the Oodle Kraken protocol from RAD Game Tools. This atypical drive size was found to be optimal for the 12-channel pathway for the system rather than more typical 500 GB or 1 TB units. Direct storage for games is expandable through an NVM Express (NVMe) M.2 port, while additional storage can be made available through USB-compatible drives. The system includes a 4K-compatible Ultra HD Blu-ray optical drive. Though game installation from a disc is mandatory as to take advantage of the SSD, the user has some fine-grain control of how much to install, such as only installing the multiplayer components of a game

Doesn't look durable. Not sure about the cooling. I actually like the XSX design even though I'm not going to buy it.

The Xbox looks more powerful, but in the end i'm still leaning towards the PS because I have been using a PS all my life. I actually like the design despite many people not liking it. Any idea on the difference in price between the PS5 with and without the disk drive?

There is no official pricing yet. Rumors are it could be 50-100$ difference.

if there is a 100$ difference, I am going for a non disk drive model. I can surely use an USB disk drive, can't I ?

I play PS2 games on PCSX2 (along with PC games) and haven't had the time to setup RPCS3 yet.
Never had a console in my childhood except for knock-off nes/snes which worked with 8 bit game cassettes.

I heard there is a Stock crunch by SONY and its not available in any retailers in US/UK.
Limited stocks are sold out like hot cakes and scamsters are selling it at high price on eBAY.

Yes there are people in other forums who have booked because of using telegram bots. As there is high demand and people are willing to pay 65k (15K) I feel like scalpers are buying and reselling it.

Sony doesn't seem to care. They are more interested in selling their PS4 models at full price, so they are not bringing new consoles here.

Its not just Sony. I think no one is handling it, in anyway, may be except 1 or 2. Their products are selling at MRP, even last gen products! It's all dream come true for these companies.

PlayStation 5 restock will be available for pre order on shopatsc on 17 May 2021 at 12 PM.

Now retailers across the country such as Prepaidgamercard have listed the PS5 with pre-orders live from May 17 at 12pm. No date on delivery has been announced just yet though sources tell us that orders placed by May 17 would be delivered to customers by May 24. Quantities for this May 2021 PS5 restock are severely limited we’re told, this is likely due to the ongoing lockdown restrictions in parts of the country.

yes, it seems demand is less. Many people were WFH back then, but now people got busy. Also the current layoff scenerio and fear of recession is stopping people from making unnecessary investments. Many like me got graphics cards as well. And many PC users can try most games for free.
Also, I will prefer the upcoming PS5 pro.

Lower demand + better supply, both I guess. Even few months back PS5 used to get OOS in few mins.

XB Series S seemed like it would fail on paper because of specs & price, but due to lack of availability of non disc PS5, it became a hit when demands were high. Also, I know someone who had a Series X, recently sold it off because his WFH ended.

warranty may not be an issue since you register the product with your PSN account for first time.

but the bad thing I feel is PS5 games are not exclusive anymore. Sony is releasing all AAA games on PC.

PS5 users : Sad
PC users: Happy

Good thing about PS5:
Optimize 4K playback @120fps and no worries about GPU upgrade
PS5 haptick feedback controller experience.

Another good reason of PS5 availability is the leaked release of PS5 Pro around the corner. ;)

Buy a yearly subscription would be cheaper than buying each game separate.
I don't own a 120Hz 4K TV. But will buy one in future :)

But one difference I noticed while watching a demo 120Hz TV is that the motion is super fast. Even the 23~24fps Movies run at 60fps in a 120Hz TV

Check if it's actual 120hz or interpolated 120hz. Some manufacturers mislead people.

That is MEMC at play to interpolate 24fps videos to 60fps. I don't like the soap opera effect it creates, checked it on some budget TVs as well as a Panasonic one. Maybe higher end TVs like LG or Samsung or Sony 120Hz models have better MEMC, but didn't spend extended time with it.

On the Panasonic TV at my parent's place, MEMC at low makes it feel bit smoother than MEMC off but without the soap opera effect. Maybe at low it is interpolating 24fps to 30fps & as 30fps is half of 60Hz refresh rate, it looks better than native 24fps.

On a separate note, Hisense U7H is a good budget 120Hz TV at under 45k now. This makes 120Hz 4K TV affordable. Although LG OLED, Samsung QN90B, Sony X90K, etc will be on a different level quality wise.

Its the opposite, supply is much better now. Surely there has been lower demand vs say 2021 because of work from office & those who want a gaming device has already bought one.

Supply situation got much better in US & EU by Nov/Dec last year, only recently Sony tried to address supply here it seems.

ps5 slim will probably be an inferior cut down version of ps5-the original version is always preferable to that.

PS4 slim was the same as PS4 with just a redesigned chassis. Why will they make a lower performance PS5 now?

Maybe APU chip will be made using newer fabrication technology resulting in lower power draw, thus lower cooling requirements, hence making it "slimmer".

As per the gyan received from Google, PS5 slim maynot have Disc.
Also many improvements are made in PS5 since initial release on the hardware. Now the the motherboard is smaller and heat is slimmer that they can just make a slimmer version of PS5 by just changing the case.

Apparently, they reduced the 12 mo EMI off from 8.5k to 6.6k now. I could see it for under 45k with PS5 disc + GoW Ragnarok (3.6k), additional 2k off via 150 supercoins is also available, so effectively under 43k.

Keep checking. They keep on changing it very frequently. Even in 30 mins interval. discounts are 2000, 3000, 4250, 6500, 7000 and 8500. Max discounts is between 12am to 3 am.

I am analysing their trends for couple of months now.

I only got ₹1000 discount for 100 supercoins

You got a great deal on the disc version of the console for sure. My friend yesterday decided to wait 2 months, and now changed his decision & the offer is gone :p

BBD is from 23rd Sep, I suppose. Unless Sony reduces the price again, it wont be cheaper at BBD.
Get PSN account in a region where games are cheaper. I feel buying and selling discs is more economical than owning a digital copy, and subscription is there as well.

Why do you think its 23 Sep? Usually its between Durga Puja & Diwali but has been getting closer & closer to Durga Puja.

Edit - Just checked last year's dates, it indeed happened during Durga Puja, ended just before Ashtami.

You can get open box Samsung 990 pro 2TB for under 12k, will be a much better choice. Even a big brand like Adata with S70 blade has QC issues, so better avoid EVM.

techenclave.com/threads/samsung-new-open-box-ssds.216270/page-7

Heard of some issues with 990 pro or 980 pro, just read about it online. I think issue no longer exists.

IMO PS5 does not make sense anymore. You buy ps for its exclusives. Since most games now have a pc release, ps5 is not cheap for an average Indian. If I have to pay to play online and then also pay for the internet connection, I'm not buying it.

But some games work for online play without PS+ subscription. Such as FortNight.

Did you mean to say without ps+?
It's a free game and anyone with a pc can play it for free.
Problem is paid games that need you to pay extra to play online and then pay more to get dlc.
You get free games from ps+ but you can only keep and play them till your subscription is active. The cheapest one is 330/m when you pay for annual. Monthly plan is ₹500.

Unless we make money by playing games, there is no point in these subscription based services for games.

I don't like the subscription based model to play games. But unfortunately Apple has also done the same.

Under 40k for a PS5 still makes sense for casuals IMO as Nvidia has completely given up on budget GPUs & AMD as well, kind of (AMD still makes money from consoles, so not much of a loss for them). A decent PC with say 3060 12GB will cost 60k+ (but 3060 is inferior to PS5 GPU slightly). Also most people are not tech savvy enough to own a custom PC. Also consoles are much more easier to use for casuals.

If you can afford a good PC & are tech savvy enough, definitely PC is better in the long run.

Where would you get ps5 under 40k? Maybe used console. If you're taking about used console and game discs for single player games then yes, it will serve the purpose of budget gaming. But you won't get this option in all parts of India.
And if you're building a pc in India, the average joe is only going to spend on hardware.
I still would love to buy a ps5 but only for hacking/jailbreaking and adding it to my existing collection of playstation consoles in my closet.

New disc version of PS5 was under 40k or at 40k multiple times last year & early this year on mainly Flipkart.

Now that PS5 is OOS, I think PS5 slim digital was under 40k & disc one at 42k at times. Upcoming sales will again have these prices, most likely.

I was able to find this from desidime:

Hi, I’ve been on the PS Plus Deluxe plan ever since I got my PS5, but now I’m starting to feel like it’s not worth the price for me. Sure, if you look at the number of games included, it seems like a great deal; but realistically, we barely play most of them.

When I think about how much I’ve spent on the subscription, I feel like I could’ve just bought a few physical or digital games that I’d actually play and own forever.

Does anyone else feels the same or should I keep the subscription, its due for renew in next 14 days ?

I never bought the PSN subscription and its really not worth for me.
PSN is only for those who plays lot of PSN games everyday & plays Co-op modes a lot also if a lot of youtube streaming is done.

I bought all my PS5 games online & physical copies (few)
