hey i just got a new videocon d2h set top box and my tv gave up on me and i just wanna know can i connect my hd set top box to my laptop directly via a hdmi cable and watch tv

The answer is no. HDMI port of laptop is for output only.

Ok atleast tell me any way to watch recorded content from set top box to my laptop i record on a pen drive
if the files are being shown in the pendrive, try to play them using VLC.

When i connect the pendrive to my laptop it asks me to format it

Try to plug it in a PC having linux os and check if it works.
STB recordings are encrypted. It will not play in pc. Windows prompts you to format the drive because it is using a different file system mostly Linux based.

i plugged it in liniux too but it is not showing any video files
