Can anyone recommend me a brokerage account to keep us based stocks. I have merrill lynch but its gonna expire in around 9 months. I wanna transfer all my stocks to some other brokerage with minimal fees

I use Zerodha. They provide a pretty nifty app and enrollment is a easy and straightforward process.

Thanks for making this thread. Can be useful.
Anyway, so here's a short story of my involvement in trading.

I wanted to start my investing/trading journey since atleast 4 years now. But when sh!t hit the roof in 2020, I finally entered the world of investing/trading in July 2020 after I created a Zerodha account. I knew going in that it's very easy to loose money in trading, so I only started with 10k. And also put similar money in Mutual funds. I also got lucky with my first IPO when I was able to book good profit in Mazagon IPO.
While the money in MF kept growing thanks to bull market up until February 2021, I lost my trading money (10k in just brokerage alone) when I discovered I could use "margins". That's when I realize I can't bet on random stock. So I stopped trading until and started to listen to good YTers like Invest Aaj for Kal.

So my question is, who knows this guy, "Anant Ladda"? And do you guys trade (intraday or short term like few days)?

Till now the only exposure to US stocks is Parag Parikh Flexi Cap funds. It's a good fund. Although I do want to own a piece of Tesla. Been thinking about getting a way to invest in US based stocks too. Especially since we can buy fractions of a US stock too unlike Indian stocks.

* My mentions are not recommendations. Do your own research before investing.
^ I think I would need to add this disclaimer in every post here too.

TBH I am pretty new to investing in stocks myself. I just bought some stocks based on feedback from some members like @thetechfreak and @Faun in the new telegram group.

I have already added a disclaimer in the OP, so I think it applies to all posts in general.

If you want to buy USA stocks directly you can try vested. Not very worth for low volume purchases considering the cost but definitely worth in long term.

Alternative would be invest in Motilal Oswal N100 ETF. Read more here. It comprises of 100 USA stocks(with different weightage) and you can directly invest from Zerodha or whichever broker you use. Would suggest medium level investment on this at best (10-15% of porfolio) as sometimes these ETF have less volume and so you may have liquidity issues when looking to sell/cash out.

Use Zerodha or Angel broking. Send me a PM if you want a referral for Zerodha :p

Yeah you can't directly invest. That's why I suggested the ETF that holds these equities. Read about the ETF from the official presentation here: *www.motilaloswalmf.com/Pdf/Products/equity/1138148834N100-March-2019.pdf

@thetechfreak Have you invested with any SIPs? I am looking at the ones you have suggested on smallcase but the upfront cost seems a bit too steep for me.

No currently not doing SIP as I can manually manage the stock portfolio(and have the time). I thing for time constricted individuals it's good to do SIP on a few mutual funds and pick stocks (on a monthly or quarterly basis) and keep adding.

Govt. last night declared to take 50% profit from IRCTC convenience fee.

As a result, it tanked almost 20% in morning.

The mandate was reverted by noon, and it recovered thereafter.

b/w its bound of correct further as its valuation very high now, unreasonably high.

Stock manipulation at it's finest this. Any other company if they did something this dire would've been instantly placed into ASM list by SEBI

after split it was around 900 after closing, price dropped to 650 after the news and rose back up after govt. changed the directive.

I just checked my portfolio and I now have 15 stocks of IRCTC despite having sold my stocks last Friday. Perhaps the split stocks finally got added to my account.

So is it worth holding now? Govt order has been reversed so surely this will bounce back right?

Might see a dump on Monday now that everyone got their "extra"/split shares. Govt will definitely look to get some % of the revenue now in future.

I don't really know about Upstox, so I don't really have any opinion about them. I personally use Zerodha though and I think they are pretty good.

Guys what will you suggest Zerodha or Upstox?
Zerodha has stuff segregated in multiple products, like kite for stocks & so on. Good UI.

Upstox's new UI is good actually compared to the older one. But upstox has demat transaction charge of like ₹21/22 for every sell order (not sure of intraday, but talking about normal delivery trading) vs ₹15 with other brokers. So now, I'm using Zerodha for all stock trading.

I found Groww's UI to be the best easily, others are not close, esp for casual traders. It has some brokerage for every transaction, buy or sell whereas other 2 just charge you the taxes for delivery trade. If you won't be trading much, I'd recommend Groww because of 0 AMC. It has direct MFs as well and I'm using it for my MFs.

So decide for yourself. My recommendation is Groww for small traders & Zerodha, if you will be investing a lot of money.

Groww takes 20INR or 0.05% which is lower. So unless you do less than total 15 buy or sell(orders) with it its better to get something robust like zerodha or Angelone.

Also, almost once ever week I hear groww users face different issues on Twitter. So that's that. One of them being platform going down when market tanks and people unable to sell their holdings.

Ok this is a very serious problem. One should consider Zerodha only.

Lol, no. You haven't seen the brokerage charges of traditional ones like ICICI, HDFC, Axis demat, etc. Groww's brokerage is reasonable for 0 AMC (those banks take AMC as well).

As I said earlier "Groww for small traders & Zerodha, if you will be investing a lot of money". I used Groww to start my trading journey, now using Zerodha. Few of my friends use Groww & it is enough for the few thousands they invest in a year in stocks directly.

Full brokerage services tend to have way many features compared to Groww though including access to sophisticated trading s/w as well(which both groww and zerodha). In any case user ends up paying way more on Groww unless say they trade literally less than the number of fingers we have. Not to mention the number of "glitches" I see popup on twitter at all times during trading hours (although zerodha does have outages too but significantly rarely).

Anyways, platform is upto preference. Just listing the pros and cons before one puts their hard earned money. Also, if anyone needs a refferal on zerodha do post here. It will benefit us both :p

I'm currently looking to open a basic demat account in JPMorgan,Goldman Sachs or Credit suisse. I can't find any information on their website. But they are listed as depository participants.

Probably as their clients are inhouse(or foreign) and it's for their own investments if I were to guess(and don't have direct retail customers in India).

I do. Some are really good, but sometimes even though the company is good, negative market sentiment might bring the shares down, like for CarTrade.

Got a few this year. Holding even though some companies gave listing gain. Although Zomato I did sell day 1 :p

CarTrade also I'm holding but with the premium valuations they listed not sure if we will go into profit anytime soon with the stocks(especially with the bad quarter they had). One redflag is their IPO was 100% OFS from what I remember, so mostly promoters cashing out good chunk

I booked some loss for CarTrade on listing day. Recently entered back in it. As it is a profitable company + good institutional investors, hoping shares will rise with time.

Hi guys!
Great discussions going on here!
I have been thinking to get into trading for very little amounts to learn about this. This will take time since I am new to this. But first thing I want to learn is how would I pay tax once I earn money. Say I earn Rs.1000, do I need to declare this as other income on Income Tax portal?
Note: I earn more than 5LPA and have already declared my MF investments on my office web portal.

Its a combination of direct trading + convinience of MF funds.
Good for those who want to have control over what stocks they want to, but don't want to track individual stocks, or dont have time to do so.

Personally, I don't use smallcase. I invest in MF for long term, and do direct stock swing trading.

How do you declare your income from swing trading while filing tax? Please point me to some helpful resources.

Last time I was talking here about the stocks for really small period, I actually meant trading stocks :ashamed: I just forgot the word trade that time and discussion went somewhere else

I use 3rd parties like ClearTax.
It just lets upload the CDSL statement and sort out which ITR to file, and what cost it would take. It cost me Rs 700 for the last Financial year I filed tax for.

I have never really tried it but IIRC your stocks belong to you and are stored in the depository. So, in theory you should be able to switch brokers for the same stocks. But again, I have never tried this so I don't know whether this really is possible or not.
