Hi Guys, my LG G2 just died today, well technically its not dead, but after it heated up while taking snaps, its dead to me :-?

The G2 is heating up significantly the past couple of weeks. Mild heating was common, during 3g streaming etc, but now its practically heating up like a furnace during any moderate cpu activity, like while taking multiple snaps one after another. Once while sync was going on I had used the camera, the CPU reached 65c+, which is insane but the battery did not heat up much. The cores started to throttle like crazy and the UI came to a near standstill, and the phone was too hot to touch. I had to shut it off. I can't blame the cpu as its working perfectly while watching videos using mxplayer, or playing music continuously for hours, or calling, or simply browsing/facebook. But when multiple cpu intensive activities are going on simultaneously all hell breaks loose. I can't blame the battery as its not heating up while charging and its lasting normally. This reminds of desktop cpus that heat up due to dust buildup in the cooler or the thermal paste had dried off, can't imagine this with my phone.

Anyway the phone had lasted for 2 years and I am too busy to take it to a service center. So I need a replacement. I want to buy a phone by September/October.

1. Budget?
25k max

2. Display type and size?
5.2"-5.5", max 5.7"

3. Dual sim?
Not required, nice to have.

4. Preferred choice of brand?
Anything other than Micromax, Lava, Xolo and the numerous other pseudo Indian/Chine brands.

5. What camera option you want (flash, front facing camera)?
Back snapper should take clean snaps, anything above 13mp, quality should come close to or match the G2 cam at least, don't care about the front cam.

6. Preferred operating system? (Android, iOS, Windows Phone, etc).
Android only

7. Preferred connectivity options (3G, 4G ready).
3G is good enough for me, couldn't care less about 4G, simply nice to have.

8. Primary use of handset (multimedia, camera, internet, gaming etc)?

A Lot of:
- Music/Videos.
- Plenty of browsing, I use 3g a lot.
Some:
- Photography
- Light gaming(no 3d racing action stuff), 2d arcades mostly.
Never:
-Selfie
-Heavy gaming

9. Any specific mobile phones in consideration?
Moto X2, Moto X Style, Moto X Play, Nexus 5
-Update: Xperia C4, Xperia Z2

10. Any other info that you want to share
Based on my usage scenario I need to following things:
-Very good Screen on Time, I spent a lot of time browsing, so a good power backup is must.
-I dread heating, so I want to avoid chipsets that heat up too much.
-Lightweight and snappy UI, I hate lags.
-Good after sales service is a strict requirement, can't deal with the cr@p that micromax threw at me with the Funbook.

+1 to last 3 in your list given that Nexus 5 is 2015 version. I won't consider Moto X2 now.

Xperia Z3 /Z3 compact for their great battery backup

Both are out of his budget (He won't like Z3C)

Z2 is a good choice & has great battery life but has a not so bright screen, dimmer than G2 (Z3 has a brighter screen)
S5 has a bit brighter screen than Z2 + much better contrast due to AMOLED (Note: Since S5, AMOLED screens from samsung are great, you can change display mode to natural if you don't like a bit oversaturation)

S5 has good battery life too (Just check it out)

I would say S5 & Z2 the best options now

I'm avoiding Oneplus Two because of its average battery life & brand value
If Moto X Play launches, it will suffice you needs, though it can't play 4K videos but your G2 can

Where is the funbook now ?

I have a mi3. The UI is quite intuitive. LG G2 UI is not that good and for that matter even vanilla android is not so good.

I like One Plus One too. But no reason to upgrade.

As much as I hate Samsung I won't argue that they have consistently made some great flagships, S5 looks like an excellent phone as well. Its just that some people in my office use galaxy grand. That phone sucks a lot, frequent hanging, battery dying very fast etc, doesn't inspire confidence in Samsung.

How does S5/S4 etc behave after 1/2 years?

2 of my friends have S4 for the past 2 years. Till KK, their phone was a bit laggy but didn't hang (apps took a few more millisecs to open when compared to my old N4). Lollipop increased the speed. Its much smoother & faster now, though its still not as fast as stock android devices like N4 but the difference isn't visible until you go for comparison (its a matter of few millisecs)

1 of my friend has S5 with Lollipop & it was as fast as my N4 (just few millisec slower, not the same case for S6 ). But android M might be last update for S4 (or maybe Samsung won't give that too as S3 wasn't given Lollipop treatment). S5 is sure to get M

S5 on lollipop is good. I personally just don't like its design, rest is great

I hate the design of S5, but I'll take good hardware over design anyday, good design plus poor hardware does not entice me, like the Nubia N9 mini.

Thanks, but I was looking for a more real world scenario. Like for an 1yr old phone with some wear on the battery, I want to know how such a device would behave under lollipop.

Yeah, competing with Apple won't get it anywhere, I think they are learning the hard way why every manufacturer is targeting the Indian middle class(~25k) segment and not the 40k+ segment(hint, that segment is ruled by a fruit company): $10 billion wiped off Samsung's market value - The Times of India

Nope, never gonna buy 10k+ stuff from ebay ever.

Well best of luck for paying more then. I am not a fan of eBay by any means, but as long as my favourite sellers are there, and with the coupons there simply can't be a better deal.

Quite shockingly, no LG phones are listed on eBay any more! G2, G3, G4 none! WOW! I guess eBay has decided to be less filthy from now on, good.

Yeah, but that SoC is still better than S615, it supports 4K recording & playback (Not like the Note 3). Only con is no 4G support. There is 4G version available in India, which has S801. Ask for its price locally.
When S5 costed around 35k, 4G version costed 40k. I don't know its price now

Why would you buy a downgrade to your G2?

I don't think N5 will be placed under 30k if it came with SD820 as the rumours suggest.

I also have my eyes on the version with SD410 and 2GB RAM that goes for 9,999/-. That also has massive 3000mah battery. While it will be slower and can't play games like NOVA, it can play most games fine incl Asphalt, Riptide etc, does not heat up much, has a good enough camera and dual 4G sim. Its pretty snappy like the Moto G3 as well. So the massive battery powered by a low power consuming 410 will do wonders for the battery life. And reviewers have praised it in youtube a lot.

Laser assisted focus will help in much faster focusing, can't say that the Toshiba sensor is the best in that range, but still it will produce good images

Still overall a downgrade to G2, that's my opinion

Hey isnt that a downgrade from your G2 ? Why not get your G2 repaired ? Is the Zenphone laser truly better than G2 ?
Yes, but there are few things I had learned after using the G2 for two years.

1. I seldom use the camera for photography, mobile cameras are not there yet. I always fallback to trusty FZ150 for photography. And very rarely a situation has come up where ended up using the G2 as a primary camera. I mostly use the mobile cam for quick snaps, like that of a signboard, or paper, mostly to capture information quickly that I would need to use later. For that a OIS camera is not required. A cheaper camera would do for me.

2. I rarely play games on my mobile, mostly 2d arcade games like subway surfer, hungry shark evolution, hill climb racing etc. I don't have the urge to play action games in my mobile.

3. Battery life is the key element in a mobile for me. I use my mobile a lot reading stuff in web, that's why I need maximum SOT. While the G2 used to give good SOT back when it was working good it never crossed 5 hrs for me(3g on and in use full time).

4. I need plenty of storage, my music collection stands at 150GB and growing day by day. I also watch a lot of TV series on my mobile on the way to office, or in office :p For that I need a lot of storage space. A 720P TV series come at 7-8GB in general or more. I had estimated that I need 50GB for my music and 30GB for my videos. Ironically I don't load a lot of heavy apps, so 16GB of internal storage is enough for me(provided it comes out at 10GB).

5. Another important feature is the back button in my G2. Its the most convenient location to have the volume buttons, at least for me. It takes less than a day to get use to but its very difficult to let go of. Its the natural place where your finger rests on when holding the phone, also if the button is sideways you have to secure the phone on both sides to use them. But on the G2 you could put it face down on a surface and press the button. Apart from LG, Asus is one of the major manufacturers to use this style of button placement.

6. And finally the ultimate deciding factor is the price. While I don't regret purchasing the G2 but it seems bit wasteful to me to spend 35k plus on a phone(spent 42k on the G2) in the current scenario. Back when I bought the G2 the nexus 5 had not launched yet and sub 25k phones all had dual core cortext a9s in them. The snapdragons were no where to be seen under 30k and all we had were Allwinner and Texus etc with 1GB ram and cr@p batteries. The mobile scenario had improved a lot and thanks to the chinese companies we now have a feature reach phone sub 20k.

tl;dr All most all of the requirements that are mentioned in the front page is satisfied by the Asus Laser 14k model, hence decided to go for it.

The Laser's camera has nothing on the G2. G2 still has one of the best cameras in the market even in today's cutthroat competition. It's just that I don't need a uber good cam for my day to day use(read point 1 above).

It's definitely a downgrade but will serve most of my requirements.

I'm torn between three phones now:

Moto X Play - Good specs, need more info on pricing and some initial reviews. Also waiting for India launch.

Asus ZF2 [STRIKE]Selfie [/STRIKE] Laser- Really good specs, specially for that price, need reviews and launch date.

Nexus 5 - No idea about specs or price. If the latest rumors are true then specs are beyond groovy, now thinking about pricing. Google has tendency to shake up the market (till nexus 5), waiting to see if they manage to pull out an elephant out of the hat.

Good thing is that the top two will probably be available by September end or October start. As for google we'll surely know the price and have some reviews by then. And that's the time I'm planning to purchase the phone (Oct/Nov). Will wait for Nexus if it revolutionizes the market, else will go for Selfie probably.

Moto X Play would be a great phone for you because of its battery

As far as ZF2 Selfie is concerned, do you take that much selfies ??

Nexus 5(2015) - I'm sure it would just have a average battery life as Nexus line is always going for good hardware at low price (except N6, which was overpriced with an average cam). So better not get your hopes high for this one as far as battery life is concerned (both N4 & N5 had poor battery life, N6 had average)

After using N4 for 2 years, I realised battery life is the most important thing in smartphones (Although for me camera & size also matters). I'm currently happy with my Z3C (just wish it had dual SIM card support :p)

^^ The specs are very confusing. gsmarena states 5.5" but flipkart sates 5". Which is correct? Moreover Laser has 2GB RAM & costs a rupee less than 10k. Which Laser version is 14K?
3 models. Note the model numbers, there are 3 distinct models but 2 model number, based on screen size only. Compare battery, screen size, processor and RAM:

They probably thought its best if they follow the practice they do with motherboards. PxxZxxVxxDeluxexxxUltraxxx - Good enough model name for 20 models.

There's also one more near INOX, i dont know it's name
Rashi handles motherboards and phones I think, the other one is for GPU

Get Zenphone 2 Selfie it has better speakers and looks cool too with slim profile.

I was never fond of Intel chipsets, these models have SD410 or SD615, both tried and tested. There's little Asus could screw up there. Even cheap chinese phones deliver good performance with those chipsets.

I can vouch for that. Have been using the zenphone belonging to a colleague for a few days. Asus has one of the slickest UIs I had ever used, much better than the cr@p that comes with Samsung.

I agree, but it's not fair to expect G2 quality screen from a phone that costs less than 30% of the launch price of the G2. I had seen the screen of the Zenphone 1, its good enough(agreed its worse than the G2). I'm not sure whether any new phone under 25k has a screen as good as G2.

Selphie is a wonderful phone but I find two issues there:

First issue is that I don't take selfies, so I'd be paying for something that I will never use(massive front cam).

Second is that the Selphie has a 1080p screen. The SD615 is pushed too hard to power a 1080p screen and at those resolutions not even stock android can always provide a smooth experience(looking at moto x play reviews). I'd rather have a 720p screen with a SD615. Otherwise there might be heating and stuttering, specially with the custom ZenUI which will tax the processor more than the default ui of the X Play.

Mi4i has a good display for sub 15k phone, can't say if its better than G2(never used a G2)

I'm sure S5 has the best display in sub 25k territory, haters gonna hate..... But since S5, AMOLEDs produce good accurate colours (in natural display mode, but you will love it, its better than what my Z3C has)..... S6 pushed the boundary further by improving brightness

1. Shoddy marketing practice
2. The fact that the company will decide WHEN I CAN and WILL purchase the phone rather than when I, the customer want to.
3. Bad after sales support, flipkart and amazon are filled with sad tales of service problems.
4. The snapdragon 810, no matter what the company claims it overheats. I had seen this problem in gpus, while some cards will run at normal temperature some will definitely overheat(cpu binning, not all cpus run at same temps). I don't want to play Russian Roulette with my phone.

nicely put.. I would'nt mind the marketing bit though. And SD 810 does overheat but the company claims it has controlled it by underclocking it and taking other such measures.

Qualcomm though needs to come out with newer set of chips quickly as its current gen mid & high end (SD615/SD810) both suffer with issues.

Though S4 has a better screen and more RAM it falls short of multiple features.

1. No dual sim, no 4G, big bummer these days.
2. Old phone, will not be updated much longer.
3. J7 has a bigger display, many people want that.

... other missing features.

Overall speaking, its the same reason I won't buy a LG G2 even if it came under 18k, these are the best phones of the last era, not much useful now a days: Samsung Galaxy J7 vs. Samsung I9500 Galaxy S4 - GSMArena.com

Gotta keep up with technology.

If talking about 4G, I hate the stuff as well. It's not required over 3G unless you are streaming stuff which will be expensive beyond anything. But 4G will be required because of policies. Before 3G was launched the speed of Edge was great, was getting 20-22KBPS sometimes. Now after launch of 3G they reduced it a lot, specially Airtel and Vodafone. Same with 4G, they will reduce 3G speeds and shove it down our throat, someone needs to pay for that investment, and the government will not let go of a single paisa for selling spectrum.

I've all but finalized the Moto X Play which will launch tomorrow at 18k and 20k I think for 16GB and 32GB respectively.

If you don't want the 615(frankly I don't like it either), then go for Mi 4 or better yet Nexus 6, it will have sell as soon as new Nexus are announced. If you're ok with a 32bit cpu then Nexus 6 provides massive vfm now. I am just afraid that Google might focus more on 64bit in future and I'd like to ride the bandwagon :D

I had the ZF2 in mind as well, the laser model with SD615 and 720p display @ 14k, but it's nowhere near launch ATM.

Mi 4c is slated to come in future with SD808 @ less than 20k, but the fact that it will be 16GB without micro sd completely turned me off, there will be a 32GB model but it will most probably not come to India.

The battery in my G2 is dying, the phone also heats up a lot these days, it will be a rather replacement than downgrade.

I ditch the powerful processor for better battery, ois camera for better daylight shots, custom skin for stock android. But the lack of gyroscope threw a curve ball, I think its better for me to wait. Gyroscopes are not like barometer or temperature meter, they are a part of the android ecosystem for a very long time, they are something the developers have taken for granted, not having it will be an issue I think.

Moto X Play Camera have disappointed in the reviews and LG G2 have a very great camera. I was comparing my old G2 shots and iPhone 6 Plus shots, G2 is superior. G2 is a piece of gem.

iPhones can't justify the price they charge

My Z3C is better than iphone 6 overall (even though iphone has a betetr build quality but price isn't justifiable)

The battery in my G2 is dying, the phone also heats up a lot these days, it will be a rather replacement than downgrade.
~snip~
To get my G2 up and running I need to replace the battery, the heating will be there but I don't play many games.

Wish we had heatsink pastes for phones too :p

Do you want this thread to turn into a Warzone? :D

There's a reason Apple makes such huge profit on an iphone, they do the marketing right.

Sony Z5 uses TIM and Heatpipes, now you'll see people taking the phone apart, applying TX5 and posting benchmark.

- - - Updated - - -

Mi 4c is slated to come in future with SD808 @ less than 20k, but the fact that it will be 16GB without micro sd completely turned me off, there will be a 32GB model but it will most probably not come to India.

Moto X play with 615 and 2GB RAM. Do you think that it would last for atleast 2 years?

Mi4c with 16gb won't be enough for me. Atleast 32gb is required.

ZF2 may release on 21st September.

I was originally gonna wait for Nexus 5(2015) but my s4 died suddenly

Sheeple will buy any crap with apple's logo on it.

Since you are back to square one, LG G3 Shine 32GB Black and Gold: Buy LG G3 Shine 32GB Black and Gold Online at Low Price in India - Snapdeal.com is for 28.5k. Seek some coupons to see if it comes under your budget.

Heard it had a pathetic battery life. Need to go take a look. Also Nexus 6 should start dropping soon.

It always feels nice to purchase a newly released phone, get to enjoy it for a lot longer and get support, if going with 2014 phone Nexus 6 would be the better option I think, minus the camera.

X Style then.

X Style release date is still not yet fixed and nexus will release in india in mid-october.

G3 or Z3C is good or it's worth waiting for nexus or style?

Not a fan of 6 inch phones like nexus 6..

Yeah, both the Moto G and X Play lack the Gyroscope. So I want to know what are the shortcoming for that.
Style has it I guess

Qualcomm screwed up this generations. All the phones released in this gen suffers from some sort of compromises. Either the camera or the battery or the cpu. The SD80x wielding phones were the last no compromise phones. So I've decided to wait till nexus launch. If they suck I'll just buy a cheap 10k phone for now and wait for next gen. Or better yet I'll just replace the battery of my G2 and use it for one more year.

None of the phones released so far this year can serve as a proper replacement for my G2. Sad year for Android.

Except for performance, I think Moto X Play is a good phone

Also Sony M5 is a good device but Sony didn't price it right. I was excepting it to be launched at around 26-28k.... 35k is too much

Waiting for a year would be a nice idea, as after the launch of S7, S6 might get below 25k price mark

Im in the same boat too. Looking for a device that I will be happy to hold on to as my primary device for the next 2-3 yrs or more.

Currently biding time with my L720. Have a few hopes with next Nexus 5.

Considering the Moto X Play and still researching a little about it watching detailed review videos, i dont know whether i will need the gyro as i dont play many games, but certainly good to have (especially expect most of these to be present on phones costing 20k or more). What I'm more skeptical about is the performance of X Play with SD615, dont wanna see lags etc after installing many apps.

Will go for Moto g3/zenfone laser (or a new WP+Android Tab combo) if i dont find anything interesting in next few days.

20K or more? The gyro is there on the sub 10k Asus Zenfone 2 Laser. Its very common these days. Its like buying a laptop without a bluetooth.

PS: Moto G3 lacks the Gyro as well, plus support for upto 32GB SD card. Better to go for Zenfone 2 Laser. Bigger battery, more sd card support(128GB) and the gyro. It lacks waterproof body and in the camera department. Take your pick. I'd have gone for the Laser.

Yes its a good device & its from moto (thats the reason i got hooked onto it, otherwise I wouldn't have gone for a SD615 device by any means).

On hindsight I'm still thinking if the OPO would still be an overall better device.
X Style is still on my radar since flipkart is not going to deliver X Play within the next 10 days.

X style will come sometime around mid October. Price should be around 25 and 28k.

Motorola stock Android design is pretty optimized. The 2014 moto x pull sot that is quite unbelievable given the small battery.

Not sure whether its that optimised for battery life, seen reports where Moto X Play's 3630 mah battery is giving similar backup to the oneplus one.

With cyanogen mod or other custom os. Put that in X play and you'll get better battery stats.

Yes so.. Doesn't that mean moto's rom is lesser optimized or more power hungry than cyanogenmod.
