hi guys..

I recently decided on purchasing a tablet within 20k( strict budget) with the sole purpose of watching Movies/TV Series and playing games ( mediocre usage..restricted to real racing 3/gt racing 2/asphalt ).. My media contents would be mainly of 1080p movies from*ahem* sites ;)..

With the help of tdf members, i finalized on Nexus 7 2013 tablet.. The tablet is available at flipkart @15k*...
But, one of my friends suggested to me that it would be better to buy a phablet like sony z ultra @20k or lenevo vibe x2 @20k as they would have better processing power for future-proof purposes..

Now i am confused whether to get a tablet or phablet..The nexus 7 2013 is almost 2 years old now..it might get android m update as well, but i am confused on how feasible it would be on getting it now..the processor is quite average when compared to z ultra..
But, on the other hand, its screen is pretty awesome and apparently, its pretty much handles most of the tasks easily...

should i stick with nexus 7 or go for the phablets ??
Also, are there any good vfm tablets that might be released in the next 2-3 months ? if so, i could wait..

Thanks
Regards
Ash

Frankly Nexus 7 is a good tablet but its gone deadly slow after 5.0 OTA and google doesnt seem to be optimising updates for older Nexus devices but Id still get it over the phablets you mentioned

if you want my personal opinion, get the iPad mini or a regular iPad instead
the quality of components is much better and its roughly the same price
ios 8 is smooth even on older devices and jailbreak makes the package even sweeter
without jailbreak, you will ofcourse miss bluetooth but a jailbreak tweak can enable full support
^^just my personal opinion after owning a Nexus 5,7(2012), iPads 2,3,4,Mini 1 all running the latest OTAs from respective companies
Lollipop has basically broken my N7 2012s functionality
its slow on 2013 as well,so only buy it if you intend to stay on kitkat or use a custom ROM

I just checked out the features of nokia n1...Looks like its too good to be true.. Size is perfect, display looks great and the processor/gpu is good as well.. But, unless I missed something, there's virtually no word on when its going to be launched here in India...so far, its sold only in China..also, not a lot of reviews of it even after 4 successful flash sales.. :O.

I hope they don't decide to sell it in flash sales. There are @ssholes who will get it in order to black market it later at a much higher price.

They will fix it eventually. I am just worried about the ram management bug and it will be fixed soon. Some devices even got 5.1 today.

some good news..looks like i might have convinced my brother to contribute for my tablet purchase funds. :p. The deal is we'll have to share the tablet & he'll chip in about Rs 10k , making my budget Rs. 30k .. ... I am fine with this as he'll mostly be using it during sunday.. His main usage will be watching full hd movies only..

so, now that my budget is 30k(strict), Any tablet recommended for such purposes ?? I am thinking of Nexus 9 (wifi only)..does it support external HDD using OTG ( without root ) ?? Any other suggesstions ? I liked the apple ipad, but the ecosystem feels too restricted , when compared to android. :(

For that price nexus 9 is good. But if you want premium feel than athe ipad air is always a great option to consider. But lollipop will alow you multi user setup.

tbh, i never considered windows tablets ... Any particular tablets that can give N9/ipad air2 a good fight ?? What exactly would be windows tablets advantages over Lollipop/ios ???

does ios has the wifi direct facilty ( to use apps like shareit, software data cable or similar apps ) ? :) This is imp. because i use such apps a lot of time.

Never had any experience with ipad or ios, can't comment on that.
Using Android Tablets for quite some time which is great.
But Windows Tablet(Full and complete Windows OS) gives you the complete enriched experience, usability and functioning, that you normally do on a Windows based Desktop-PC or Laptop.

Sharing is not the strongest point of Ios. I mean you can only share data to a certain apps in the tablet itself let alone the sharing to other devices. For sharing android all the way.

My Main usage would be movie watching and gaming..From what i've seen on my dad's Lumia 535, Windows has excellent productivity apps, but gaming dept. is disappointing...Apple & ios,on the other hand, provide decent no. of apps on both depts..

Just like i suspected..i regularly use apps like shareit to transfer between devices..The display/processor/build of ipad is flawless, but when it comes to connectivity/storage, it sucks.. everytime i want to watch a video, i have to connect it to PC & sync it, which seems a bit of a hassle for me.. :(

Hopefully with a 10.1" Windows based Tablet there won't be any issues with gaming. You just can't compare a Lumia 535 with a full fledged 10.1" Windows(Full OS) Tablet from HP/ACER/DELL/ASUS/etc.companies. More sweeter if the screen sports 1920x1200 (Full FHD) resolution specs.
Android Tablets are also very best and great, but not everything could be done on by Android.

Wait for a few days as I think mwc is approaching. So expect some great tablets from it.

Don't go for nexus 9, it isn't worth the price. It's a MEH tablet and has bad display.

As I said earlier, wait for some days for Nokia n1 and mwc too.

yeah, i'll be waiting tiil mwc... don't know if i can wait until nokia n1's launch since no launch date has been specified :(..

I just found out that ios does have shareit & it works fine on the older iphone4 !!! :)

Now if only there was a otg-like solution for storage problems for ipad ( the otg pendrive from strontium is ridiculously priced :( )

P.S : My brother during his 4 year stay in japan purchased a iphone 4 on contract ( it doesn't work here, so he uses it as ipod :p )... Flipkart has a exchange offer on ipad air2..exchange of iphone4 would reduc the cost by 7.5k..would they accept the iphone4( from japan ) in such case ? )

IPad is a nice idea but if you want great productivity and multitasking, go for Windows or at the least Android. Don't go for Ios as you might get bored of its locked down nature.

ipad is the best tablet experience imho
dont listen to people saying its locked down etc
ive used both Nexus 7(own it) and Nexus 9(friends) and own iPads 2,3,4 and android tablets are a waste unless you get them on a major discount
sure otg support and bluetooth are a PITA on iOS but the overall experience on an iPad is vastly superior than android tabs

in case of phones,I hate iphones, they are extremely overpriced even compared to an iPad which has slightly better hardware(screen and cpu clock) and iPhones<<Android Phone

I guarantee iPad display and experience etc is totally worth it

Android tablets dont come close to iOS and Windows at all in the overall experience
they lack out of the box gestures and arent well optimised(even Nexus,my own Nexus 7 is literally a paperweight since 5.0)
thats just my experience(and opinion) after owning and using Nexus and iPad

kkn13 I can understand Android tablets not being optimized but what about Windows tablets? They rule the multitasking sector and it is as smooth as I pads.. And IMHO, gestures doesn't define good product.

And as far as I know, IPad display is not more than 1080p.. Even nexus 7 2013 beats it in display quality and crispness.

I didnt say windows tablets are bad, I said ios and windows>>android in tablets atleast

as for iPad,ipad mini and retina ipads beat Nexus by miles
the only reason Nexus 7 looks better than iPad 2 is because of the smaller display hence higher ppi than ipad 2,itll never beat anything above ipad 3 for sure because ipad 3 onwards have 1536 x 2048 pixels as compared to 1080p of nexus 7 2013

also once you own an ipad or a windows tablet, you will know why gestures are needed and define a good tablet, android is lacklustre in comparison in the tablet department still unless you are on a budget

android specialises only in the phone department, apple and microsoft have perfected the tablet experience in comparison to android

You can make gestures in Android as its open source. Also, you can install multi window apps and can be used simultaneously.

Nonetheless, at the price range of ipads, ipads are better but I prefer Windows tablets over them.

Windows Mobile doesn't even have a proper app for Whatsapp and Facebook, which is what most of the people use a smartphone for. I'm really regretting buying my mother a Lumia 520, the browser is no where near Chrome on android for ease of browsing, and Whatsapp has no backup facility to transfer all chats to other platform phones.

FB is better on WP than on ios and android imho
whatsapp is equally pathetic on all platforms,I have it on my ipad 2,4 , Nexus 5 and 7 ,Lumia 720 and 820, BB Z10 , they are just too lazy to code properly imho heck despite the annoying ads even Hike,WeChat are miles ahead

Is Lumia 520 a mid range phone or an entry level phone ( honest inquiry, not being rhetorical )? Whatsapp on Windows has tons of limitations compared to its Android counter part. Same can be said about the Facebook app. Many apps on Store are from unverified developers, below par compared to the ones available on Android.

You want stable , smooth performance, no glitches, brilliant photos and videos, get iPad. You want apps and games , Android. Windows loses out to both imho.

im sorry I dont quite agree again
I have an ipad 2,3,4 , Nexus 5 and 7(2012),Moto E,BB Z10 and Lumia 720 and 820 in my household
so yeah I pretty much know what im talking about

first off Lumia 520 is a low range(entry) phone which performs excellent compared to the Moto E for the same price
FB on Windows Phone is miles ahead on my 720 than on my ipad 4

Windows phone doesnt have "limitations",not all of us want pirated games(no offense but its a reason most stick to android, nothing personal),recovery options custom roms
you wouldnt ever need recovery and custom roms etc in the first place if all androids ran stable roms such as Stock 4.4.4(5.0 is a mess) ,WP doesnt need these things at all

most android apps are malware ridden or fake,I fail to see why Wp apps are considered below par(except instagram, the missing snapchat app and Whatsapp which is pathetic on all platforms including android and ios)

how does whatsapp have "limitations"?? other than the option to turn off the "blue ticks" which is android-only for now

WP 3rd party apps arent from "unverified devs" , Devs like Rudy Huyn are freelancers who code better than the first party itself,so well that apps such as official Dropbox etc were made by him on request

Sure iPad is relatively stable but it has its own set of issues,as a tablet, I prefer iPad but not as a phone
WP has balance between the closed iOS and extra open android,it just needs time to mature more but its certainly not losing out
it may have certain drawbacks, but not enough to ditch the platform

Once you actually own/use all platforms properly, such statements can be made

hope you arent taking offense to my statement :)
im simply stating my opinion after owning/using all platforms properly

Well commenting on one platform is incomplete unless you have used it throughly as a daily driver. i have used all the three and Ios used to be great but with Ios 8 it is full of bugs and glitches coupled with a lot of crashes. Windows is certainly performing better with denim update and android is still on partially suck and love phase.

I can't understand what's the hype about ipads, really. People say that ipads have great selection of apps but I can't even tell the difference between android and ipad apps. Every entertainment app is available for Android at very cheap price when compared to ipads.

Apart from the build quality, which even android oem are providing the, is no better than Android IMHO.

Please explain me if I'm wrong in my above statements.

^^ Im sorry but ive had a better experience with my iPad 2 than with my Nexus 7
The quality of apps, consistency of updates etc is better with iPad
the aesthetics of iOS is better on iPad than android on a tablet
as a tablet - iPad is better value for money and works beautifully
you want real productivity- Windows tablets(not RT) all the way!
android has no real space outside of phones imho(its a phone centric OS while iOS has grown to be more tablet-centric)

its the opposite in phones however ,iphones arent worth it

Can you elaborate? Like in what apps does ipad perform better than its android competitors? I've used both of them and found no difference in app stability or usefulness.

Infact, according to one survey, android lollipop is more stable when compared to ios.

So can you explain how and in what apps ipad is better?

Infact, according to one survey, android lollipop is more stable when compared to ios.

So can you explain how and in what apps ipad is better?

ive found android Lollipop to be a massive downgrade
ios 8 used to have crashes but its fixed since 8.1.3
ios 8 is faster than ios 6 on my iPad 2

every app which ive used on my iPad has been better than on my Nexus 7 such as FB,Youtube etc
also android isnt consistent and optimised for tablets at all,the lack of gestures or UI design for tablets is largely lacking

I dont believe in surveys,I also own an iPad 3 and an iPad 4 but I chose to compare my Nexus 7 with my iPad 2 which despite being older and having "inferior" hardware has provided a better experience for me
Ive tried custom roms etc alot but ios is the better than android in tablets
in phones ,its the opposite

ios also scales iphone apps much better than android phone optimised apps on android tablets
most android apps are loaded with tonnes of apps and play store even has fake apps /malware
there is persistent touchscreen lag in android tabs as well, once you use an iPad as your primary tablet, this becomes obvious
android apps dont follow a specific design UI,they all are different and its very annoying after sometime

ashs1, you could have a look at acer aspire switch10 (2-in-1) hybrid,if that suits you, as it is well within your budget.
Full Windows-8.1 OS.

You are correct to your liking & wish.
HP and DELL are always superior to Acer, but they haven't come up with a hybrid(detachable)model at this budget and price point. That's why I referred.
In fact Lenovo models are also very good particularly the Yoga 2 Windows based Tablet.

wouldnt count totally on it
plus Sonys portables have had self cracking and overheating issues as well for a while now-Ps Vita, Xperia Z series(all phones)
best is to wait and see..

Why MS do not launch the surface pro in India is still a big question. The market has the potential but MS overlooks it every time.

Xperia z4 tablet is plastic not glass. So there is no chance of cracking and crazy heating.

^^ display is gorilla glass..... thats where self cracking issues started
as for the plastic body, its not about material, its the design, the designs dont have proper heat management
